Viscosity and light-transmission measurements of dilute suspensions of montmorillonites having different exchangeable cations were used to calculate relative particle sizes as a function of cation composition, where particle size is expressed as the number of clay plates per tactoid relative to the number of plates per tactoid for Li-montmorillonite, after exchange of Li, Na, K, Cs, and Mg by Ca. Tactoid sizes increased in the order Li < Na < K < Mg < Ca, with the number of plates per tactoid relative to Li-montmorillonite varying from 1.5 for Na- to 6.1 for Ca-montmorillonite. The results for tactoid sizes derived from light transmission and those derived from viscosity data are in reasonable agreement with each other and with literature data for similar systems. Upon exchange of Ca-counterions for Li-, Na-, or K-coun-terions, a sharp initial decrease in tactoid size was observed over approximately the first 30% of cation exchange. Upon further exchange, tactoid sizes changed only slightly, but when Ca was exchanged for Cs or Mg, a much more gradual decrease in particle size was observed.

The expression “République des lettress” is still used today. It appears in most recent dictionaries of the French language, and it even occasionally occurs in ordinary conversation or in the press, a pompous and ironic circumlocution to designate the Parisian literary “milieu.” This archaistic and pejorative survival masks (somewhat similarly to the word “rhetoric”) the attention that researchers are now according to the older meaning of this surviving expression, and to the concept of an international exchange of ideas that it represented for scholars of the Ancien Régime. As proof that this scientific interest is recent, Paul Hazard, in the famous Crise de la conscience européenne (1936), devotes not a single line to the “Republic of Letters,” while in the chapter dealing with Pierre Bayle he cites the “Nouvelles de la République des Lettres” (1684), the learned periodical published in Amsterdam by this erudite Calvinist, apparently without feeling a need to explain a title that seemed self-evident. For the history of ideas, this notion was not a subject for history. It resided outside the field of perception of a discipline that was completely devoted to a sort of chemistry of pure ideas, removed from the literary form that carried them, and a fortiori from institutional circuits, and forms of sociability and dialogue that “invent” and spread them, and even more so from the awareness that “scholars” might have had of the solidarity that united them and of the meaning they might be able to attribute to it.

Raman and Fourier-transform-infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic methods and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) techniques have been used to study the influence of hydrazine on the vibrational modes of kaolinite. Strong vibrational perturbations of the OH-stretching and -deformation bands were observed in the Raman and FTIR spectra on intercalation. The intensities of the Raman- and IR-active OH-stretching bands decreased significantly upon intercalation; the intensities of the Raman bands were reduced to a greater extent than the IR bands. The deformation bands were also strongly perturbed by the presence of hydrazine in the interlamellar region. Upon evacuation of the intercalate, two new bands at 3628 and 912 cm−1 were noted, indicating the presence of a different structural conformation of the complex under vacuum. Similar results were obtained using XRD, on evacuation of the kaolinite-hy-drazine (KH) complex the d(001) value decreased from 10.4 to 9.6 Å. Partial collapse of the intercalate from 10.4 to 9.6 Å was probably due to keying of the -NH2 moiety of hydrazine into the siloxane ditrigonal cavity, as indicated by a blue-shift of the inner-OH band from 3620 to 3628 cm-1. Structural OH vibrational modes may therefore be useful probes of amine interactions with clay mineral surfaces.

We show joint convergence of the Łukasiewicz path and height process for slightly supercritical Galton–Watson forests. This shows that the height processes for supercritical continuous-state branching processes as constructed by Lambert (2002) are the limit under rescaling of their discrete counterparts. Unlike for (sub-)critical Galton–Watson forests, the height process does not encode the entire metric structure of a supercritical Galton–Watson forest. We demonstrate that this result is nonetheless useful, by applying it to the configuration model with an independent and identically distributed power-law degree sequence in the critical window, of which we obtain the metric space scaling limit in the product Gromov–Hausdorff–Prokhorov topology, which is of independent interest.

The unit-cell dimensions of synthetic, Al-substituted goethites showed that the c dimension is a linear function of Al substitution in the range 0–33 mole % Al, but that the a dimension is variable over this same range. The b dimension is also linearly related to Al substitution but is slightly more variable than the c dimension for Al substitutions of 20–33 mole %. The variability of the a dimension is postulated to be the result of structural defects. An improved procedure for estimating Al substitution from x-ray powder diffraction positions requires (1) calculation of the c dimension from the positions of the 110 and 111 diffraction lines using the formula: c = (1/d(111)2 − 1/d(110)2)−1/2, and (2) estimation of Al substitution from the relationship: mole % Al = 1730 − 572.0c. The 95% confidence interval of the estimate is ±2.6 mole % Al when using this procedure, in contrast to ±4.0 mole % Al when the position of the 111 reflection alone is used.

Junction probability diagrams show variation in both composition and layer arrangement in mixed-layer clay minerals. These diagrams can represent short-range and long-range ordered, random, and segregated interstratifications. Mineralogical analyses of illite/smectite from shale cuttings, bentonites, and hydrothermally altered tuffs define characteristic reaction pathways through these diagrams. Shale and bentonite analyses fall along pathways joining smectite and illite on diagrams showing nearest-neighbor (R1) layer arrangements. Transition from random to R1-ordered interstratifications occurs in shale samples containing 60–70% illite layers, and in bentonites containing 55–67% illite layers. Analyses of alteration products, however, fall near a line connecting rectorite and illite, which represents the maximum degree of R1 layer ordering. No mineralogical evidence is available to suggest that these alteration samples formed from a smectite precursor. All samples develop next-nearest (R2) and thrice-removed (R3) neighbor ordering along similar pathways. Transition to R2 ordering occurs gradually in samples composed of 65–80% illite layers, and samples containing more than 85% illite layers may show strong R3 ordering.

The 57Fe Mössbauer spectra of several montmorillonites, measured at room temperature and 453 K, showed a considerably broadened Fe3+ resonance which can be computer-fitted with a similarly broadened Fe3+ doublet. In some spectra, particularly if all linewidths were constrained to be equal, this broadened Fe3+ resonance was further resolved into overlapping inner and outer Fe3+ doublets, also having broad linewidths. In accordance with recent electron diffraction evidence, the assignment by previous workers of the inner doublet to Fe3+ in the octahedral sites having the cis-arrangement of OH groups and the outer doublet to the octahedral site having the trans-arrangement of OH groups is incorrect. Instead, the Fe3+ was found to be located largely in the trans-octahedral sites. Because of the relatively low iron content of the montmorillonite examined, the next and more distant neighboring-cation environment varied considerably about the octahedral Fe3+ ions. This variation produced a broadened experimental resonance, and the resulting two-doublet computer fits probably represent the mean extremes of a continuum of slightly different Fe3+ resonances arising from the variable nature of the environment surrounding these such trans-sites, rather than distinct cis- and trans-sites. In addition, a small resonance indicating the substitution of Fe3+ into the tetrahedral sites was observed. The interlayer species probably influenced the Mössbauer resonance of Fe3+ in the tetrahedral and octahedral sites.

Today we know, and this will be the subject of this article, that the universe is in continuous evolution, even revolution. This observation has been possible only quite recently. It was necessary to wait for the observations of distant galaxies, undertaken between 1930 and 1950 by Edwin P. Hubble, the astronomer who was the first to show that the universe as a whole is presently expanding. We know now also that the form of the constellations closest to us, such as the Great Bear, has been modified over the last millennia. Ancient astronomers, and with them the rest of humanity, imagined at that time that the universe was eternal and unchangeable. Astrophysicists today are convinced, in the large majority, that twenty billion years ago the universe went through a unique phase during which it was very hot and very dense. To this phenomenon they have given the name of the original or primordial explosion. As will be seen later, certain people believe that the universe will once again experience this great “heat”, which will be generated during future contractions. Others foresee an increasingly frozen and empty future for the universe. Between this glorious past and this uncertain future, the universe each day reveals more of its splendor thanks to the arrival of modern techniques of observation and the beginning of the conquest of space. The purpose of this article is to give a brief survey of the manner in which astronomers see the universe today; working from the position of man in the universe, his relation to it begins to be understood better.

In 1976 an interdisciplinary study on risks and risk evaluations was inaugurated in Sweden and was sponsored by the Committee for Future-oriented Research. One of the basic assumptions of the Swedish risk project was that modern society has created “new, increasingly complicated and large-scale technical systems.” It also assumed that “large systems are economically efficient, but vulnerable and therefore create risks.” A third assumption was that “the ever rising standard of living is purchased at the cost of certain additional risks.” The perspective of the project was thus markedly historically oriented.

The possible physical and chemical forces controlling the volume change behavior of kaolinite were ascertained from the sediment volume of kaolinite in various solvents under no external load condition and from conventional oedometer measurements of kaolinite in several pore fluids. The minimum sediment volume of 14.5 cm3/10 g clay occupied by kaolinite in water where repulsive (R) forces were dominant indicated that the R contribution was insignificant for kaolinite. The maximum sediment volume of 25.0 cm3/10 g clay in benzene where coulombic attraction forces were significant suggested that electrostatic attraction between silicate sheets and midplane cations and van der Waals forces were not appreciable for kaolinite. The positive edge-negative face bonding of kaolinite particles in benzene was unlikely because the protons required to impart a positive charge to the edges were not available in the nonpolar solvent. The 3688 cm−1 band in the infrared spectrum of a kaolinite-dimethylamine sample decreased by 10 cm−1 on H-bond formation of the solvent molecule with the exposed structural hydroxyls of the octahedral sheet. The adsorbed solvent molecules likely H-bonded with an adjacent clay particle. That such interparticle H-bonds controlled the sediment volume and interparticle attraction in kaolinite was indicated by the decrease in sediment volume with increase in dipole moment of the solvent molecule, i.e., 25.0 cm3/10 g clay in n-heptane (dipole moment, μ = 0), 23.5 cm3/10 g clay in toluene (μ = 0.36), 17.0 cm3/10 g clay in ethanol (μ = 1.67), and 14.5 cm3/10 g clay in water (μ = 1.84).

In the oedometer tests with various pore fluids, a high void ratio (i.e., volume of voids/volume of solids) of ≈ 1.3 was obtained for kaolinite in n-heptane, and hexane (μ ≅ 0) at an external pressure of 1 kg/cm2 probably because the weakly bonded kaolinite particles were randomly oriented. At the corresponding applied pressure a lower void ratio of 0.88 resulted in water (μ = 1.84) where the stronger hydrogen bond between flat layer surfaces of adjacent particles favored a parallel orientation of clay particles.

The variations in void ratio-external pressure relationship indicated that kaolinite underwent lower compressibility in a solvent with low dipole moment and vice versa. Thus, the interparticle H-bond did not play a significant role in controlling the shear resistance and volume change behavior. The volume change behavior was essentially controlled by frictional forces and clay fabric. In nonpolar solvents the random arrangement of kaolinite particles and the frictional forces mobilized a high shear resistance on the application of a consolidation pressure, resulting in a lower compressibility. In a solvent with high dipole moment the parallel array of clay particles mobilized less shear resistance and produced a greater compression.

Platy (Te Puke, New Zealand), cylindrical (Spruce Pine, North Carolina), and spherical (North Gardiner mine, Huron, Lawrence County, Indiana) halloysite samples were analyzed by high-pressure differential thermal analysis (HP-DTA) to determine the effect of morphological and chemical differences on their respective thermal stability. In halloysite, these morphological differences imply structural features. The metastable phase relations of each are analogous to those of kaolinite. At 1 bar, the platy, cylindrical, and spherical samples showed peak temperatures (maximum deflection in the dehydroxylation endotherm) of 560°, 578°, and 575°C, respectively, whereas at about 600 bars the peak temperatures were 622°, 655°, and 647°C. At low pressures the observed reaction is related to dehydroxylation: halloysite (H) metahalloysite (MH) + vapor (V), whereas higher pressures produce melting reactions, either H + V = metaliquid (ML) for conditions of P(H2O) = P(total), or H + MH = ML for P(H2O) < P(total). The PT conditions of the invariant point, H + MH + ML + V, for each system are: Te Puke, 612° ± 4°C, 25 ± 7 bars; Spruce Pine, 657 ± 2°C, 30 ± 7 bars; North Gardiner, 652° ± 2°C, 34 ± 7 bars. The lower thermal stability of the Te Puke sample may be related to its higher iron content, although additional data are necessary to confirm that it is not related also to the platy structure. Furthermore, morphological differences between the cylindrical and spherical varieties appear to have had little effect on the energy required to dehydroxylate these halloysite structures. Exceptionally high values obtained for the dehydroxylation enthalpies using the van't Hoff equation, compared with values derived using other methods, may be explained by a 10–15-bar excess in the intracrystalline H2O fugacity during dehydroxylation. Intracrystalline fugacity is defined here as the H2O fugacity within crystallites and is not related to the partial pressure of H2O around individual particles.

Transmission and analytical electron microscopy have been used to study the diagenesis of the trioctahedral component of phyllosilicates (principally chlorite) in argillaceous core samples (depths of 1750, 2450, and 5500 m) from the Gulf Coast. Chlorite was observed as 100-150-Å thick packets intergrown within mixed-layer illite/smectite in the 2450-m sample and was more abundant and larger in packet thickness in the 5500-m sample. The chlorite is disordered in stacking sequence as characterized by diffuseness of reflections with k ≠ 3n in electron diffraction patterns. Berthierine (7-Å) was locally found to be intercalated within chlorite layers. Chlorite from the 5500-m sample is iron-rich and has an average chemical formula of Fe3.1Mg1.1Al2.7Si2.8O10(OH)8. This chemical composition and textural relations suggest that the chlorite formed within mixed-layer illite/smectite utilizing Fe and Mg released from the smectite during its conversion to illite. The berthierine is nearly identical in chemical composition with the coexisting chlorite although it may have a slightly higher Fe content. The 7-Å berthierine is probably a metastable precursor of the chlorite and may be diagnostic of the diagenetic environment.

The depth distribution of illite/smectite (I/S) compositions was investigated for a well drilled to a depth of 3462 m on Barbados Island, the only subaerial exposure of the Barbados accretionary complex. The classical pattern of increasing percentage of illite interlayers in the mixed-layer clay with increasing burial depth was not observed. Rather, the data describe an irregular, zig-zag trend with depth. This trend is probably the result of reverse faulting in the section. I/S data were also used to infer several kilometers of uplift and subsequent erosion of the section. This study shows that irregular patterns of clay diagenesis with depth can be anticipated for sequences that have undergone complicated tectonism and deformation. Combined with other geologic information, these patterns can help to determine the tectonic history of the sedimentary sequence.

The approximate maximum and minimum amounts of any phase in a complex mineral mixture can be determined by solving a linear programming problem involving chemical mass balance and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) data. The chemical information necessary is the bulk composition of the mixture and an estimation of the compositional range of each of the minerals in the mixture. Stoichiometric constraints for the minerals may be used to reduce their compositional variation. If only a partial chemical analysis for the mixture is available, the maximum amounts of the phases may still be estimated; however, some or all of the stoichiometric constraints may not apply. XRD measurements (scaled using an internal standard) may be incorporated into the linear programming problem using concentration-intensity relations between pairs of minerals. Each XRD constraint added to the linear programming problem, in general, reduces the difference between the calculated maximum and minimum amounts of each phase. Because it is necessary to define weights in the objective function of the linear programming problem, the proposed method must be considered a model. For many mixtures, however, the solution is relatively insensitive to the objective function weights.

An example consisting of a mixture of montmorillonite, plagioclase feldspar, quartz, and opal-cristobalite illustrates the linear programming approach. Chemical information alone was used to estimate the mineral abundances. Because quartz and opal-cristobalite are not chemically distinct, it was only possible to determine the sum, quartz + opal-cristobalite, present in the mixture.

Since 1963 almost 200 films have been made by African authors. This provides a suitable quantity of documents to permit an attempt to study them as a group. These films are the work of a hundred directors and so perhaps can allow an analysis of their personalities. But can we suppose that they represent all of Africa? This is hardly probable. The film-makers and their crews belong to the upper social levels. Educated, well-traveled on other continents, highly qualified intellectually and professionally, they associate with the leading class even though their financial means may not always suffice to realize their aspirations. They belong to the intelligentsia. But, because of the educative power of film, we can foresee that they will contribute to the formation of the masses. The Africa presented in their films is not that of today but maybe that of tomorrow.

This paper examines a causal relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and firms' pollution intensity by exploiting the policy of China's FDI access relaxation in 2002. The result shows that FDI leads to a significant reduction in firms' pollution intensity. The mechanism tests find that FDI reduces pollution intensity by increasing firms' productivity, pollution management abilities, and the output of lightly polluting firms. The effect primarily acts on firms in lightly polluting industries and firms in the eastern region. The findings support the pollution halo hypothesis and provide implications for developing countries like China by evaluating the effectiveness of policies to attract FDI.

At first glance, the formulation of the principle of inertia—not. yet complete with Galileo, more precise with Gassendi, finally systematic with Newton—seems to constitute but one of the aspects of a process of deep transformations at the end of which traditional cosmology was replaced by various world systems. These transformations—or, to use a more classic term, this “ scientific revolution” —have been the object of numerous works, a list, of which would alone fill the pages of a thick volume. But the principle of inertia itself, a principle about which can be said without exaggeration that it expressed the essence of this revolution at the same time as it stimulated it, has perhaps not received all the attention it deserves. And especially the impact of this principle on Western culture has not been fully measured. True, Alexandre Koyré has always insisted on the fact that, by reducing movement to a state like that of the state of rest, the principle of inertia expressed a new vision of the world more than a scientific result. But his admirable analyses deal more with the slow advent of the priciple of inertia among the natural philosophers who preceded, accompanied and then followed Galileo than with the theological, philosophical and literary impact of this principle. Moreover, by examining this impact, we discover that it is necessary to make a distinction between Euclidian space and absolute space, a distinction which is frequently implicit with certain scientific historians, but, and this must be emphasized, is more often ignored.
