Clay minerals and zeolites, candidate backfill minerals for nuclear waste repositories, were treated with saturated NaCl brine and Mg-rich (Mg-Ca-Na-K) brine at 200°C and 300°C for 4 weeks under a confining pressure of 30 MPa. The Al concentrations released in NaCl brine were lower than those in Mg-rich brine at both temperatures indicating that the Mg-rich brine is more acidic than the NaCl brine under these hydrothermal conditions. The Si concentrations in both brines were low because of the relatively acidic conditions developed during the hydrothermal treatment. As determined by X-ray powder diffraction or by specific Cs and Sr sorption measurements, no alteration could be detected in clay minerals treated with NaCl brine at 200°C. Among the zeolites tested, only phillipsite and erionite altered to analcime in NaCl brine at 200°C. Zeolites and most of the clay minerals tested did not alter in the Mg-rich brine treated at 200°C. Vermiculite altered to randomly interstratified vermiculite/K-vermiculite (mica-like) by selective K uptake from the Mg-rich brine.

At 300°C, the clay minerals did not greatly alter, whereas the zeolites altered to analcime and/or albite in the presence of the NaCl brine. In the Mg-rich brine, Al-rich montmorillonite from Wyoming did not alter, whereas Al-poor montmorillonite from Texas altered to randomly interstratified montmorillonite/ illite at 300°C. Vermiculite collapsed to form K-vermiculite (~ 10.2 Å) by the selective uptake of K from the Mg-rich brine at 300°C. Most of the zeolites altered to smectites in the Mg-rich brine at 300°C because of the acidic conditions generated by the hydrolysis of Mg. The selective Cs-sorption Kd decreased from 11,700 for untreated phillipsite to 240 and 15 for the hydrothermally produced analcime/albite mixtures from the phillipsite at 200° and 300°C, respectively, in NaCl brine. These results suggest that montmorillonites and mordenites are relatively more resistant than vermiculite or other zeolites at elevated temperatures and pressures in concentrated hydrothermal brines expected in a salt repository.

Because of the widespread feminine priority that makes it the receptacle of śakti, India is definitely “one of the last bastions of the Mother,” as is pointed out in a recent book. If in fact there is a “maternalistic” culture it is certainly that of India, in spite of the legal regime, in which the element of affectionate magic characterizing all life and all organic intimacy is affirmed through the warm symbiosis of mother-child love. A miracle of that absolute love incarnated with a natural serenity by millions of mothers dispensing a felicitous affectionate security, instilled in the Indian soul throughout its entire life. The traits of the Hindu personality and the principle content of its culture are organized and ordered around this center, characterized by an extraordinary coherence. Since its construction begins with this “dual unity” the Hindu personality has necessarily the popolarity of fusion-separation as a pivot. This is the central theme of S. Kakar, who, basing his conclusions on results of clinical psychoanalyses of Hindu individuals as well as on contributions from the collective imagination (folklore and myths) claims to discern the ontogenetic source of the supreme ideal of deliverance (mokṣa) in early childhood and, more specifically, in the strong unconscious desire to find again the benevolent presence of the “good mother”.

Natural clays are often employed as substrates for heterogeneous catalysts. However, the direct use of raw clays as catalysts has received less research attention. The objective of the present study was to help fill this gap by investigating catalytic properties of raw pelagic clays (PC) collected from the Indian Ocean. The raw PC were discovered to be efficient catalysts in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) in the presence of NaBH4. The effects of parameters including pH values, dosages of PC, and initial concentration of 4-NP and NaBH4 on the conversion or degradation rate of 4-NP have been investigated. The 4-NP was observed to be completely degraded within 480 s under conditions of 0.10 mM 4-NP, 25.0 mM NaBH4, and 0.20 g/L PC at an initial pH value of 7.0. The apparent rate constant was evaluated to be 27.53 × 10–3 s–1. Unlike previous pseudo-first order kinetics experiments, the induction period and degradation stages were observed to occur simultaneously during the PC catalysis. The S-shaped kinetics for 4-NP conversion was found to be perfectly matched by Fermi's function, and the enzyme-like catalysis by PC was appointed to describe the kinetics. Species of Fe(III), Mn(IV), and Mn(III) in PC were found to be essential, and were partly reduced to Fe(0) and Mn(II) by NaBH4 in our reaction, contributing to rapid conversion of 4-NP to 4-aminophenol (4-AP). The raw PC was converted to magnetic PC (m-PC) particles, which made PC particles separate easily for cycling use. This discovery would also have applications in continuous flow-fluid catalysis.

During the Renaissance, the su was regarded primarily as a source of light which gave form to all things*; during the Enlightenment, paradoxically, the sun was regarded primarily as a source of heat. Paracelsian chemistry of the 1500s introduced salt as a third principle which embodied the other two, mercury and sulphur; salt was that universal mediating presence which represented earth. By the late 1700s salt was no longer a metaphysical principle but an acid-base compound, and volatile salts aroused most interest. These changes in scientific perceptions of sun and salt ran parallel to one another: beginning as transcendent sources of form, sun and salt came to be considered manipulable sources of energy. Our r-;odern approach to energy derives from a period during which Europeans gradually lost their belief in the creative agency of two essentials to human life.

Pillaring of montmorillonite and beidellite with aluminum polyhydroxypolymer takes place first by the saturation of the cation-exchange capacity by monomeric and/or dimeric aluminum hydroxide species and then the intercalation of the so-called Al13-polyhydroxypolymer. The clay slurry must have a solid concentration greater than 0.01% (w/w) to produce a basal spacing of about 18 Å. Sizeable clay tactoids must therefore exist in the slurry in order to produce a turbostratic structure ordered along the c axis. The main difference between pillared montmorillonite and pillared beidellite seems to be a more ordered distribution of pillars within the interlamellar space of the clays that are rich in tetrahedral substitutions. Recent 27Al and 21Si high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance data suggest that this higher degree of ordering results from the reaction of the aluminic pillars and the clay sheet near the sites of the tetrahedral substitutions.

Oxygen isotope ratios of <0.1-μm smectite in bottom sediments of the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico near the mouth of the river have been determined to investigate diagenesis of land-derived clay minerals during sedimentation in the sea. No difference was detected in δ18O (SMOW) between the river and the Gulf samples indicating that no smectite alteration or addition of neoformed smectite to the river samples took place during sedimentation. Thus, authigenic minerals in the river sediments cannot make up more than a few tenths of a percent of the bulk sediments.

Similar results were obtained from 3 × 106-yr b.p. sediments buried to 80 to 600 m at Deep Sea Drilling Project site 323, Bellingshausen Abyssal Plain. No significant change with depth was noted in the δ18O of the <0.3-μm size fraction, mostly smectite, of these land-derived sediments. On the basis of the δ18O of the deepest sample, the maximum amount of authigenic minerals in the land-derived sediments during burial in the sea cannot be more than one or two percent of the bulk sediments. Hence, the alteration at seafloor temperatures of 25-45% of the <0.1-μm size clays in 3 × 106 yr b.p. sediments reported in a previous study is not substantiated. The data demonstrate that land-derived smectite is stable in the sea, and that oxygen isotopes can be used to investigate the modes and the temperatures of formation of authigenic smectites in marine sediments that are younger than 25 × 106 yr and that formed below 25°C.

Fundamentally, a ruin is a utilitarian structure which through the ravages of time or through some other circumstance has lost its utility and its function. When a useful object becomes useless, it continues to be present without a true existence, exactly as if it were dead. A torn glove, a bicycle without wheels, do not deserve to be called by their original names. It is difficult, of course, for us to resign ourselves to the fact that objects we have always thought of as useful are no longer useful; we hold on to the illusion of profiting from them as long as possible. We still make use of an abandoned automobile by stripping it of its accessories; we make use of a dilapidated house by salvaging some of its building material. However, the time comes when we must accept the evidence and admit that the object has become a burden.

When Auerbach writes in Mimesis: The Representation of Reality in Western Literature that, although Homer can be analyzed, he cannot be interpreted, he puts the reader on notice that not all verbal discourse embodies the structure of interpretation. He equally shows the reader that there is discourse which, in order to be read, must be interpreted—that of the Bible and its heirs. Although Mimesis has long been celebrated, its readers have not properly remarked that what allows Auerbach to achieve his penetrating reading of Western literature is precisely the critical distinction which he makes between analysis and interpretation, between that which is devoid of or lacks (is ignorant of) interpretation and that which consciously involves (wills) interpretation. Given the failure to appreciate the distinction which Auerbach systematically draws between analysis and interpretation, it is hardly surprising that philosophers and literary critics have failed to see that the distinction between analysis and interpretation presupposes a general theory of interpretation which applies no less to philosophy than to literature.

A montmorillonite exchanged with large hydroxy-Al cations was thermally treated to convert the hydroxy cations to oxide pillars and to generate permanent microporosity in the interlayers. The pillared clay products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and water-sorption measurements to delineate the effect of aging of the pillaring solutions, the methods of drying and concentration of clay-water suspensions, and the temperatures of calcination on micropore volumes. Although samples prepared at different conditions gave d(001) reflections of 17–17.5 Å, at least to 500°C, the concentrations of clay-water suspensions and the temperatures of calcination significantly changed the pore-size distribution and the volume of micropores present in the sample, as calculated from the water-sorption isotherms. A narrow pore-size distribution having little or no macroporosity or external surface condensation was observed in samples prepared by the addition of the pillaring solution directly to the clay (solid) without first making a clay-water suspension and calcining the sample at ≥400°C. About 87% of the total volume was found to be micropores of ≤14–17 Å in the sample calcined at 600°C. Aging the pillaring solution, however, did not influence either the water-sorption isotherms or the XRD patterns significantly under the conditions specified. Essentially the same results were obtained for samples prepared from both hydroxy-Al polymer (OH/Al = 2) and aluminum chlorohydrol (ACH) solutions.

Although alumina-pillared clays exhibited an extreme type-I isotherm (Langmuir type) for nitrogen adsorption, the sorption of water vapor gave an isotherm of unusual shape that fit neither a BET nor a Langmuir equation. This latter behavior has previously been attributed to a unique pore size and hydrophobicity and is apparently common to all pillared montmorillonite materials. The hydrophobicity of the pillared clay apparently developed on calcination by the migration of protons from the interlayers to the octahedral sheets, in which sites of cationic substitution (negative charge) were located. Protons migrated back to the interlayers by treatment with NH3, which subsequently converted to NH4+ in the interlayers. The exchange of the NH4+ by Ca2+ introduced hydrophilicity to the alumina-pillared clay, which was reflected both in the shape of the water isotherm (close to moderate Brunauer type I), the heat of sorption, and the total sorption capacity.

It is known that when Boabdil, the last of the Abencerrages, left Granada definitively, driven out by the reconquest, he gave a final look at his admirable city and, at that precise moment, sighed deeply. That sigh—el suspiro del Moro—has come down to us through history and after us will no doubt touch and disturb the sensibility of our descendants until the end of time. However, is it really a matter of Boabdil‘s sigh only, or is it the one, coming from Adam, of those who have lost Paradise? Here, Boabdil seems to be one relay among others of that lament issuing from the depths of the species and rising, as regret and never-ceasing nostalgia, to the easily-agitated surface of our ocean of domesticity. Since that first garden, we have been the unloved children of this regret and this nostalgia. The angel with the fiery sword changes nothing: he does not have our memory that, alone, makes us every day a little less original and, in doing so, expels us, making us a little more defenseless than we were when we came out of the void. To remember is obviously to lose oneself, and we are at every moment in this vertiginous situation. As Heidegger said, to remember is to contemplate oblivion.

Pillared bentonites were found to be efficient catalysts for the O-methyl bond cleavage of anisoles (e.g., m-methylanisole, guaiacol, and creosol) under very mild, static conditions (150°C, a few hours, inert atmosphere). The O-methyl bond cleavage led to phenolic products. Gas chromatographymass spectrometry and solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques used to probe 13C-labeled anisoles revealed that dealkylation and transalkylation reactions occurred to a large extent, and that conversion was efficient at >95% after two days. Ortho- and para-isomers were observed exclusively, without any evidence of meta-substitution. Volatile products were determined by mass spectrometry to be 13CH3OH and (13CH3)2O. Magic-angle spinning 13C NMR experiments showed that the molecules were fairly mobile in the clay micropores prior to catalysis. After catalysis, cross-polarization NMR showed that molecular motion had decreased markedly. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy of the colored complexes suggested some quinone formation. The trend of clay reactivity was found to be: pillared bentonite ≫ acid-washed montmorillonite > untreated bentonite > pillared fluorhectorite ≃ untreated fluorhectorite.

A mixed-layer kaolinite/smectite (K/S) containing trace amounts of quartz, discrete kaolinite, goethite-hematite, and calcite was hydrothermally reacted with deionized water at 150°, 200°, and 250°C for 1 to 12 months. The starting K/S contained 50% smectite consisting of 15% low-charge and 35% high-charge layers. The X-ray powder diffraction and chemical analyses of the reacted products indicated a progressive reaction from high-charge to low-charge smectite as a function of time and temperature. The reaction reached completion after 4 months at 250°C, at which point high-charge smectite layers entirely reacted to low-charge smectite layers, the latter maintaining a constant proportion of about 90% for longer run durations. For long reaction times, discrete kaolinite totally reacted, whereas quartz showed only partial dissolution and iron oxides remained stable. Thus, the reaction of high-charge to low-charge smectite layers may be expressed as: high-charge smectite + kaolinite (both interstratified and discrete component) + quartz → low-charge smectite.

One of the dominant characteristics of Western philosophical and literary history of the last two centuries is that the object of desire (in the novel) and the object of perception (in epistemology) have been made to reveal aspects which are more complex than the classical age had suspected. With Descartes, everything was clear: the object is but a portion of extension. But with Kant things already become more complicated: the object has a mysterious. en-soi (an sich-in itself) which escapes us. And the object of desire, in literature, acquires such a mystic character that it loses its status of creature. “For what the romantic lover seeks is not really the beloved”, writes Eric Heller. “Intermingled with his erotic craving, inarticulate, diffuse, and yet dominating it, is the desire for spiritual salvation.” It is no longer the object (the creature) which one wishes to embrace, but the invisible reality mirrored in it. Desire does not tend so much toward objects as toward what lies beyond these objects where, it believes, it will find its salvation.
