Artificial shading studies indicated that competition for photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) will limit tuber production in purple nutsedge. There were no data available to test whether there is a relationship between incident PAR underneath crop canopies and tuber production of this weed. In this study, the effect of crop competition on net reproductive rates of purple nutsedge tubers was measured under field conditions. Purple nutsedge plants were grown in association with bush beans, maize, maize and beans intercropped, sweet potato, pole beans, and bell pepper in a 2-yr field study in Costa Rica. Measurements were taken on the number of tubers produced during the growing season of each crop, and PAR transmittance was monitored weekly for the duration of the respective cropping cycles. Data on transmittance and incident solar radiation were used to calculate the daily average amount of PAR, available 15 cm above the soil surface. Regressions indicated that average incident PAR accounted for 95% of the variation in net reproductive rates. Average incident PAR also allowed a more precise competitive ranking of crops than either average or minimum transmittance. Bush beans had consistently the lowest average incident PAR values and therefore ranked as the most competitive crop in both years. Our data suggest that no net increase in tuber populations occurs if average incident PAR is below 2.7 MJ m−2 d−1. Differences in the duration of the cropping cycle accounted only for a small proportion of the overall variation in net reproductive rates of purple nutsedge tubers. Information on the competitive ranking of different crops can be used to design crop rotations that could reduce reliance on herbicides on small farms in Costa Rica.

Greenhouse-grown soybean cultivars varied in their tolerance to preemergence application of sulfentrazone. The cultivars Ransom, Hutcheson, Kato, Gasoy 17, and Cobb exhibited relatively low tolerance to 0.5 kg ai ha−1 sulfentrazone with 38, 41, 46, 50, and 58% height reduction compared to respective controls. The growth of tolerant cultivars Centennial, Edison, and Hartz 5164 was not affected by this treatment. However, the growth of all cultivars was reduced at the excessive rate of 2.0 kg ha−1 preemergence application of sulfentrazone. No differences in root uptake or translocation of [14C] sulfentrazone were observed between the relatively tolerant and less tolerant cultivars tested. Centennial and Hutcheson cultivars rapidly metabolized sulfentrazone via oxidative degradation of the 3-methyl group on the triazolinone ring of the herbicide. Only 4.7 and 4.9% of the active ingredient remained in the foliage of Hutcheson and Centennial 24 h after treatment, respectively. While there were no differences in Protox inhibition or Proto IX accumulation between the two cultivars, Hutcheson was more sensitive than Centennial to peroxidative stresses induced by either Proto IX accumulation or rose bengal. Therefore, tolerance to sulfentrazone is due to rapid metabolism of the herbicide; however, the intraspecific difference in response to sulfentrazone appears to be due to intrinsic differential tolerance to the herbicide-induced peroxidative stress.

Redroot pigweed is a common weed in sorghum fields throughout the southcentral United States including Kansas. In 1994 and 1995, field studies were conducted at two sites near Manhattan, KS, to determine the influence of redroot pigweed densities and times of emergence on sorghum yield and yield components. Redroot pigweed was sown at densities of 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 12 plants meter−1 of row within a 25-cm band over the sorghum row at planting and at the three- to four-leaf stage of sorghum. A rectangular hyperbola was used to describe the relationship between crop yield loss and weed density. Because of the instability of both coefficients I (percentage yield loss at low weed density) and A (percentage yield loss at high weed density), our results do not support the use of a model based exclusively on weed number to estimate sorghum yield loss across all locations within a region. A quadratic polynomial equation that accounts for the time of weed emergence relative to the crop growth stage is suggested as an alternative method to estimate sorghum yield loss. At the densities studied, the time of pigweed emergence relative to the sorghum leaf stage was critical for the outcome of sorghum-pigweed competition. Significant sorghum yield losses occurred only when pigweed emerged before the 5.5-leaf stage of sorghum. An examination of yield components suggested that the yield loss was a result of a reduction in number of seeds per head.

Replacement series experiments were conducted under greenhouse conditions to evaluate effects of population densities and proportions on the intraspecific and interspecific interference of either purple nutsedge or yellow nutsedge with tomato cv. Sunny, under nonlimiting conditions of water and nutrients. When grown with either nutsedge species for 40 d, tomato dry weight per plant increased and dry weight per plant of nutsedge decreased as their relative proportions decreased in mixture. Relative yield analysis indicated tomato is a stronger competitor than either nutsedge species. Both nutsedges appeared to be weak interspecific competitors but strong intraspecific competitors. Attenuated light on a purple nutsedge canopy showed that tomato additions can reduce light received by the weed compared to pure nutsedge stands.

Differential response of three weed species to prosulfuron was examined through studies of acetolactate synthase (ALS) sensitivity, uptake, translocation, and metabolism of the herbicide. Sensitivity of common cocklebur, common lambsquarters, and sicklepod ALS to prosulfuron was similar with I50 values of 3.3, 4.5, and 8.8 nM, respectively. Absorption of the herbicide increased with time for all three weed species. Percent absorption 2 d after application for common cocklebur, common lambsquarters, and sicklepod was 8, 33, and 26%, respectively. An average of 53% of the absorbed herbicide remained in the treated leaves of common cocklebur, 80% in common lambsquarters, and 93% in sicklepod. Approximately 33, 15, and 5% of the absorbed herbicide was translocated into the upper shoots of common cocklebur, common lambsquarters, and sicklepod, respectively. Metabolism of 14C-prosulfuron 1, 2, and 4 d after application was greater in sicklepod than in common lambsquarters or common cocklebur. The results suggest a combination of differential rates of translocation and metabolism may account for the differing sensitivity of these weeds at the whole plant level.

Field experiments were conducted in 1992 and 1993 to characterize the weed seed bank, to determine the influence of moldboard plowing and secondary soil disturbance on the emergence pattern of weeds, and to measure weed seed bank depletion by emergence in a long-term moldboard plow corn cropping system. Viable seeds of common lambsquarters, redroot pigweed, and each of 10 other species accounted for about 85, about 9, and less than 1%, respectively, of the total weed species in the seed bank. A negative binomial distribution described the spatial distribution of viable seeds of 10 species, but not of common lambsquarters or of redroot pigweed. Decreased density of seeds among species was associated with increased aggregation. Secondary soil disturbance increased the rate and magnitude of common lambs quarters emergence in 1992 but did not influence emergence in 1993. Secondary soil disturbance did not influence the magnitude and rate of emergence of redroot pigweed or velvetleaf. Whereas cumulative growing degree days from April through July were similar between years, the amount of rainfall was about 50% less in 1992 than in 1993. Secondary soil disturbance may have increased common lambsquarters emergence by increasing the availability of soil moisture and improving conditions for seed germination during the dry year. Even though seed bank depletion by seedling emergence was relatively low for all species, secondary soil disturbance in creased seed bank depletion of common lambsquarters and redroot pigweed about 7- and 3-fold, respectively, in 1992. Seasonal variation in the amount of rainfall may have influenced the effect of soil disturbance on emergence and seed bank depletion of common lambsquarters, which is the most abundant species in the weed community.

Survival and dormancy of purple nutsedge tubers has not been studied quantitatively. Yet this is fundamental to our understanding of the population dynamics of this highly noxious weed. Field studies were conducted to determine the effect of age on tuber survival and dormancy. A modified exponential decay function accurately described the age-dependent decline in tuber survival. This model is biologically meaningful, has good statistical properties, and can describe a wide range of responses. Tuber population half-life was 16 mo, and the predicted longevity (99% mortality) was 42 mo. Burial depth at 8 and 23 cm had no significant effect on survival or dormancy. Tuber dormancy increased with age. After 18 mo, the proportion of dormant tubers in the surviving population was two-and-one-half times higher than in the 3-mo-old population. We report for the first time that tubers were able to enter a state of secondary dormancy after sprouting. The finding that tubers persist after sprouting has important implications for population dynamics of this species. This is also the first report of tuber predation by the larvae of a billbug.

Seed dispersal, interacting with environmental disturbance and management across heterogeneous landscapes, results in irregular weed spatial distributions. Describing, predicting, and managing weed populations requires an understanding of how weeds are distributed spatially and the consequences of this distribution for population processes. Semivariograms and kriged maps of weed populations in several fields have helped describe spatial structure, but few generalizations can be drawn except that populations are aggregated at one or more scales. Limited information is available on the effect of weed arrangement, pattern, or field location on weed population processes. Because weeds are neither regular nor uniform in distribution, mean density alone is of limited value in estimating yield loss or describing population dynamics over a whole field. Sampling strategies that account for spatial distribution can increase sampling efficiency. Further research should focus on understanding processes that cause changes in spatial distributions over time to help predict rates of invasion and potential extent of colonization.

Fresh weight reductions of greenhouse-grown soybeans and corn treated with post-emergence thifensulfuron at 4.4 g ai ha−1 were synergistically enhanced when the herbicide was mixed with formulated chlorpyrifos or malathion insecticides, but the enhancement was not observed with formulated methomyl insecticide. Thifensulfuron plus formulants of either chlorpyrifos or malathion reduced fresh weights no more than did the herbicide applied alone. Growth rate of hydroponically grown soybeans was reduced by root-applied thifensulfuron in combination with a foliar-applied formulation of chlorpyrifos or malathion, but not methomyl. Postemergence-applied thifensulfuron reduced the growth rate of hydroponically grown soybeans and corn with chlorpyrifos, malathion, or methomyl applied postemergence 1 d before thifensulfuron and with procedures identical to those used for absorption, translocation, and metabolism experiments. None of the insecticides applied 1 d before thifensulfuron altered foliar absorption of 14C-thifensulfuron or its translocation in unifoliolate soybeans or three-leaf corn. Thin-layer chromatography of soybean extracts revealed one primary thifensulfuron metabolite, presumably the deesterified free acid. 14C-thifensulfuron metabolism in corn produced about five unidentified metabolites in appreciable amounts. Levels of unmetabolized 14C-thifensulfuron 24 h after herbicide application were highest in insecticide-treated soybeans and corn. Over all experiments, enhancement of injury and inhibition of thifensulfuron metabolism generally were greatest in soybeans with chlorpyrifos but were greatest in corn with chlorpyrifos or malathion. Synergistic enhancement of thifensulfuron injury to soybeans and corn by chlorpyrifos and malathion appears to result from insecticide inhibition of thifensulfuron detoxication.

Proso millet occurs both as a crop and a weed in North America. In 1970, an olive-black seeded biotype called ‘wild proso millet’ was found as an aggressive weed in row crops in Minnesota and Wisconsin and has since spread over a large area. We used Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) to assess genetic relationships among biotypes, measure genetic variation within wild proso millet across its range, and detect hybridization between wild proso millet and crop biotypes of proso millet. We found 97 RAPD genotypes among 398 individuals: 69 wild proso millet genotypes, 26 crop and crop-like weed genotypes, and two hybrid genotypes. Five RAPD markers consistently differentiated wild proso millet from crop cultivars and crop-like weeds. About 10% of the genotypes had at least one marker of the other type, suggesting possible hybridization between wild proso millet and crop biotypes. Most genotypes occurred in only one or two of the over 100 populations tested. The most widespread wild proso millet genotype occurred in 12 populations distributed in North Dakota, Minnesota, Illinois, and Wisconsin. More genetic variation exists among populations of wild proso millet than expected for a plant that presumably experienced a severe genetic bottleneck only 20 generations ago. Hypermutation rates and crossing between wild proso millet and crop cultivars could not account for the degree of genetic variation found in wild proso millet. The pattern of genetic variation among wild proso millet populations suggests multiple introductions of wild proso millet to North America.

In laboratory experiments, we studied barnyardgrass, common lambsquarters, and redroot pigweed seed dormancy release by alternating temperatures under different soil water regimes, to determine whether that response serves as a mechanism for assuring seedling establishment. Alternating temperatures were important in breaking seed dormancy in the three weeds, but the species' response to alternating temperatures differed with soil water content. For redroot pigweed and newly dispersed seeds of barnyardgrass, dormancy breaking by alternating temperatures occurred only when soil water content was high enough for germination. Moreover, adverse incubation conditions (constant temperature and low water content) induced secondary dormancy in these seeds. Seventy percent of seeds incubated in open boxes emerged before the soil reached wilting point, when seeds were incubated at temperatures high enough for a high germination rate. A dormancy breaking mechanism that triggers a high rate of germination may be important in assuring success of seedling establishment where rainfall patterns result in wetting and drying cycles of the soil, especially in soil types that lose water rapidly from the surface layers.

Primary physical dormancy caused by seed coat impermeability to water is a major reason for the persistence of velvetleaf in soil seedbanks. Understanding temporal trends in seed dormancy status will help predict potential emergence in the spring. Experiments were begun in 1992 and 1993 to determine the effects of velvetleaf seed maturation time, storage environment, and storage duration on changes in seed dormancy and germination over 20 mo. Seeds buried 1 and 10 cm deep exhibited a 30 to 70% decline in physical dormancy from maturity until winter, little change in dormancy from winter through the following summer, and a further decline the next autumn. The loss of physical dormancy was more rapid for early than for late maturing seeds and more rapid in 1992 than in 1993. Physical dormancy of seeds held at 4 C declined steadily, at a rate of approximately 0.8% per day, over the course of the study. Germination of seeds buried 1 cm averaged 23 to 37% in the first spring after harvest, which was equivalent to 68 to 100% of seeds that had lost physical dormancy over autumn and winter. The percentage of seeds with enforced dormancy reflected the loss of physical dormancy during autumn and the loss of seeds to germination during spring and summer. Additional information on how autumn temperature and moisture conditions influence the pattern of dormancy decline could aid in explaining the variation in velvetleaf infestations over time.

A norflurazon-resistant mutant has been isolated from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii that showed a three-fold factor of resistance over wild type cultures. In comparison to wild type cultures, the mutant showed better retention of chlorophylls and carotenoids when grown in light in the presence of norflurazon. When grown in the dark, chlorophyll losses were similar, while carotenoid losses were lower than in the wild type cultures. Higher levels of phytoene accumulated in the wild type cultures in the presence of norflurazon than in the resistant cultures. The resistant cultures also showed cross tolerance to EMD-IT 5914, a herbicide with a similar mode of action. Norflurazon resistance in this alga appears to arise from alterations in the target enzyme phytoene desaturase.

The influence of secondary soil disturbance on the emergence pattern and seed bank depletion of an annual weed community in a long-term, no-tillage corn cropping system was determined in 1992 and 1993. As a component of this research, the seed bank was characterized prior to implementation of soil disturbance treatments. The seed bank was initially composed of common lambsquarters, redroot pigweed, and giant foxtail, with approximately 55, 36, and 8% of the total viable seeds, respectively. The remaining 1% was comprised of five other species in 1992 and eight in 1993. The spatial distribution of viable seeds of each species, except common lambsquarters and redroot pigweed, was described by a negative binomial distribution. Three dispersion indices indicated that seeds of individual and total weed species were aggregated and that the level of aggregation of viable seeds of a species was associated with seed density; at lower seed densities, the level of aggregation was greater. Soil disturbance increased common lambsquarters emergence 6-fold in 1992 relative to nondisturbed soil, but did not influence emergence in 1993. Rainfall was about 50% less in 1993. In contrast, soil disturbance increased giant foxtail and redroot pigweed emergence approximately 6- and 3-fold in 1992 and 1993, respectively. Seedling emergence associated with soil disturbance, relative to nondisturbed soil, increased seed bank depletion of common lambsquarters 16-fold in 1992, and giant foxtail and redroot pigweed and average of 6- and 3-fold in 1992 and 1993, respectively. These results indicated that soil disturbance increased seedling emergence and seed bank depletion of the predominant species in the weed community of a long-term, no-tillage system, but that this response was dependent on rainfall for common lambsquarters.

Field experiments, conducted from 1991 to 1994, generated information on weed seedbank emergence for 22 site-years from Ohio to Colorado and Minnesota to Missouri. Early spring seedbank densities were estimated through direct extraction of viable seeds from soil cores. Emerged seedlings were recorded periodically, as were daily values for air and soil temperature, and precipitation. Percentages of weed seedbanks that emerged as seedlings were calculated from seedbank and seedling data for each species, and relationships between seedbank emergence and microclimatic variables were sought. Fifteen species were found in 3 or more site-years. Average emergence percentages (and coefficients of variation) of these species were as follows: giant foxtail, 31.2 (84%); velvetleaf, 28.2 (66); kochia, 25.7 (79); Pennsylvania smartweed, 25.1 (65); common purslane, 15.4 (135); common ragweed, 15.0 (110); green foxtail, 8.5 (72); wild proso millet, 6.6 (104); hairy nightshade, 5.2 (62); common sunflower, 5.0 (26); yellow foxtail, 3.4 (67); pigweed species, 3.3 (103); common lambsquarters, 2.7 (111); wild buckwheat, 2.5 (63), and prostrate knotweed, 0.6 (79). Variation among site-years, for some species, could be attributed to microclimate variables thought to induce secondary dormancy in spring. For example, total seasonal emergence percentage of giant foxtail was related positively to the 1st date at which average daily soil temperature at 5 to 10 cm soil depth reached 16 C. Thus, if soil warmed before mid April, secondary dormancy was induced and few seedlings emerged, whereas many seedlings emerged if soil remained cool until June.

Greenhouse and laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate foliar absorption, translocation, and efficacy of glufosinate on four weed species. The rate of glufosinate required to reduce shoot dry weight by 50% (GR50) varied between weed species. GR50 values for giant foxtail, barnyardgrass, velvetleaf, and common lambsquarters were 69, 186, 199, and 235 g ai ha−1, respectively. Absorption of 14C-glufosinate increased with time and reached a plateau 24 hours after treatment (HAT). Absorption of 14C-glufosinate was 67, 53, 42, and 16% for giant foxtail, barnyardgrass, velvetleaf, and common lambsquarters, respectively. Translocation of absorbed 14C-glufosinate from the treated leaf was greatest for giant foxtail and barnyardgrass (15 and 14% 24 HAT of absorbed 14C-glufosinate, respectively). This compared to 5 and < 1% for translocation of absorbed 14C-glufosinate from the treated leaves of velvetleaf and common lambsquarters. The majority of 14C-glufosinate translocated by giant foxtail and barnyardgrass was found below the treated leaf and in the roots, indicating phloem mobility of the herbicide. Differential absorption and translocation of 14C-glufosinate may be contributing factors to the differential sensitivity observed between weed species.

Exotic annual weeds on western U.S. rangelands owe at least part of their invasion success to prolific seed production. Reproductive output is determined largely by timing of flowering in relation to soil moisture, light, and competing vegetation. This study investigated the influence of temperature (including vernalization), photoperiod, and intraspecific competition on reproductive phenology in three populations (two varieties, typica and bracbypappa) of common crupina. Monthly plantings at four densities were grown in field plots through two consecutive cycles, and the date each plant reached bud and flowering stage was recorded. Development of greenhouse-grown plants from the same populations was compared with those grown outside for 4, 6, 8, and 10 wk of cold induction. Reproductive development in common crupina was influenced by all factors investigated: temperature, photoperiod, density, and vernalization. Conditions fostering the shortest thermal time from emergence to floral induction were a period of cold temperatures/short photoperiod as seedlings followed by warming temperatures and lengthening photoperiod. Both varieties of common crupina responded quantitatively to vernalization, but lack of vernalization caused a greater delay of flowering in var. brachypappa than in var. typica. Vernalization contributed to convergence of spring flowering among the August to December plantings, but earlier emergence and lower plant density greatly increased final plant size and fecundity. Lack of vernalization, high temperatures, and shortening day length delayed flowering of spring/summer emergents, increasing the probability of succumbing to drought before producing seed.

A new phytotoxin, pyridazocidin, was produced in shake-flask cultures of a Streptomyces sp. soil isolate. A combination of solvent partitioning, size-exclusion chromatography, and high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to isolate the material. The structure was assigned based on mass spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments. Greenhouse evaluations indicated rapid necrosis and chlorosis of treated weeds, particularly of giant foxtail. Isolated chloroplasts consumed oxygen in the presence of pyridazocidin over a concentration range also inhibiting plant growth. Pyridazocidin represents the first reported natural product that appears to act via reversible oxidation/reduction linked to photosynthetic electron transport.

Research was conducted to determine the suitability of the Fermi-Dirac distribution function for modeling the seedling emergence of downy brome, johnsongrass, and round-leaved mallow, as influenced by burial depth. Six sets of previously published emergence data were used to formulate the model and test its adequacy. Two independent johnsongrass emergence data sets were used to validate the model. Constant temperature growth chamber studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of temperature and moisture on the model parameters. The Fermi-Dirac distribution function was found to adequately describe the seedling emergence of downy brome, johnsongrass, and round-leaved mallow as indicated by a good visual data fit, narrow confidence intervals for the model parameters, and regression analysis of observed vs. modeled data. Although this function is a model used in physical science, its parameters can be related to abiotic factors such as soil texture, temperature, and moisture.

The development of sustainable farming systems depends on our ability to predict and manage the response of weed communities to changes in cropping practices. A study was established at Normandin, Québec, Canada, to investigate the influence of liquid dairy manure and mineral fertilizer, as well as chisel and moldboard plow tillage systems, in a spring barley monoculture and a 3-yr spring barley-forage rotation that included red clover and timothy. Weed species richness (Margalef's DMG), evenness (Shannon's E), and diversity (Shannon's H') were examined in these treatments from 1992 to 1995. Nutrient source had no effect on any of the three diversity indices. Evenness values were extremely low in all years, suggesting dominance of a few weed species in most treatments. Weed species richness and diversity generally were greater in the barley-forage rotation compared with the monoculture. Tillage effects on richness and diversity varied with crop rotation. Margalef's DMG and Shannon's H' were greater in 1993 and 1995, but they were lower in 1994 when chisel was compared with moldboard plowing in the monoculture. In 1994, chickweed density was about five times greater in the chisel-plowed monoculture compared with other treatment combinations of rotation and tillage. In 1995, only one species with a density of six plants m−2 occurred in the moldboard-plowed monoculture compared with three to six species and densities of 51 to 832 plants m−2 in the other rotation by tillage treatments. Climatic conditions and herbicide use patterns in the different crop rotation treatments may have contributed to the more dynamic nature of weed species diversity in the barley monoculture. Reduced frequency of tillage and herbicide application; management of the forage stands, especially with regard to their termination; and improved soil resource availability likely explained the increased but more stable diversity of the weed communities in the barley-forage rotation.
