Can we make a copy of Tycho’s “De Nova Stella” that can in fact survive a nova? At first, this may seem at best a nerdish, if not distinctly foolish question. However, it is also both a technological and a philosophical question: in fact, answering questions like this is linked to both technical, physical and sociological problems related to the long-term preservation and curation of objects from current and past civilizations.

The undertaking presented here is two-fold: Firstly, we report on the results from a state-of the art short-term project, in which we have digitized and analysed three well-known rare books Pertain ing to astronomical observations by Tycho Brahe on the island of Hven. The project led to the creation of free e-books, enabling open access to the sky as recorded by Tycho.

Secondly, we discuss some long-term issues related to the digital and physical preservation of scientific knowledge and heritage in general, exemplified by e.g. the works by Tycho.

Future work includes further physical analysis of the books and fragments, a systematic extraction and digitization of the astronomical observations, digital curation and dissemination, as well as research into the possibility of creating representations and replicas of the works, durable on extremely long time-scales.

The aim of this work is to provide new information about the history of astronomical science and the efforts of the people that have enriched our discipline, often coming from anonymity. Here we compile the attempts made in our country to prove the theory of General Relativity through experiments that, as they were without success, fell into oblivion.

We report on interferometric observations of a face-on accretion system around the high mass young stellar object, G353.273+0.641. The innermost accretion system of 100-au radius was resolved in a 45-GHz continuum image taken with the Jansky Very Large Array. Our SED analysis indicated that the continuum could be explained by optically-thick dust emission. 6.7 GHz CH3OH masers associated with the same system were also observed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The masers showed a spiral-like, non-axisymmetric distribution with a systematic velocity gradient. The line-of-sight velocity field is explained by an infall motion along a parabolic streamline that falls onto the equatorial plane of the face-on system. The streamline is quasi-radial and reaches the equatorial plane at a radius of 16 au. The physical origin of such a streamline is still an open question and will be constrained by the higher-resolution thermal continuum and line observations with ALMA long baselines.

In the context of the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE, Steinmetz et al. 2006), we present chemical abundances derived with the pipeline GAUGUIN. Based of 520 701 RAVE stars with medium resolution (R~7 500) spectra and stellar atmospheric parameters of the fifth Data Release, the analysis is performed around the infrared Ca-triple domain for 6 chemical elements: Mg, Ni, Si, Ti, Fe and Al. We discuss here the reliability of the chemical abundances provided by GAUGUIN, and the implications for the future Data Release 6 of the RAVE Survey. We also present elemental abundance patterns of Milky Way components based of kinematical criteria.

Ray tracing techniques have been used to investigate numerical effects on the propagation of acoustic waves in a non-hydrostatic dynamical core discretised using an Arakawa C-grid horizontal staggering of variables (Arakawa & Lamb 1977) and a Charney-Phillips vertical staggering of variables (Charney & Phillips 1953) with a semi-implicit timestepping scheme. It is found that the space discretisation places limits on resolvable wavenumbers and redirects the group velocity of waves towards the vertical. Wave amplitudes grow exponentially with height due to the decrease in the background density, which can cause instabilities in whole-atmosphere models. However, the inclusion of molecular viscosity and diffusion acts to damp the exponential growth of waves above about 150 km. This study aims to demonstrate the extent to which numerical wave propagation causes instabilities at high altitudes in atmosphere models, and how processes that damp the waves can improve these model’s stability.

The Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) is ideally suited to pulsar scattering studies, providing broad bands at low frequencies where the imprints of the ionized Interstellar Medium (IISM) are exaggerated. We analyse a set of sources at 110–190 MHz, and find unexpectedly shallow dependencies of pulse scatter broadening on frequency. These anomalous scattering values are discussed by considering evidence for anisotropic scattering and small scattering clouds.

Solar rotation is still one of the unresolved concern of solar physics. We performed time series analysis on the bins formed on equally separated latitude regions on the soft X-ray images. These images are observed with the X-ray telescope (XRT) on board the Hinode satellite. The flux modulation method traces the passage of X-ray feature over the solar disc and statistical analysis of the time series data of the SXR images (one per day) for the period extends from year 2015 to 2017 gives the coronal rotation period as a function of latitude. The investigation provided quite systematic information of the solar rotation and its variability.

We investigate the kinematics of red clump stars in the Solar neighbourhood by combining data from the RAVE survey with the TGAS dataset presented in Gaia DR1. Our goal is to put new constraints on the (local) distribution of mass using the Jeans Equations. Here we show the variation of the vertical velocity dispersion as function of height above the mid-plane for both a thin and a thick disk tracer sample and present preliminary results.

In the current paper, we investigate topological invariants, calculated by HMI LOS magnetograms as complexity descriptors of solar magnetic fields. We compared them with the physical parameters provided by the Space-weather HMI Active Region Patches (SHARP). We have repeated forecasting experiment of Stanford Solar Observatories Group with the same positive and negative active region patches database, but replace SHARP parameters with topological invariants of corresponding LOS magnetograms. The classification results turned out practically identical to those obtained by the Stanford Solar Observatory group. This means that using LOS magnetograms retains enough complexity for magnetic field description.

We operate the six German stations of the LOw Frequency ARray as standalone telescopes to observe more than 100 pulsars every week. To date, we have collected almost four years of high-quality data at an unprecedented weekly cadence. This allows us to perform a wide variety of analyses aimed at characterising the magnetoionic plasma crossed by pulsar radiation. In particular, our studies are focused on electron density variations in the interstellar and interplanetary media, the Galactic and interplanetary magnetic field, scintillation, and extreme scattering events. Here we report the first results from our Solar wind monitoring campaign.

An improved understanding of the solar corona is crucial for making progress on long-standing problems like coronal heating and the origin of the solar wind. Metrewave radio emissions arise in the coronal regions and form a unique diagnostic probe of this, otherwise hard to study region. The background radio emission at these wavelengths comes from the slowly varying thermal free-free emission and on it are superposed a variety of nonthermal emissions arising from a range of plasma emission processes. The latter are coherent in nature and hence lead to a much larger observational contrast, as compared to that in EUV or X-ray, for emissions involving similar energetics. One of the prevalent hypotheses for explaining coronal heating is based on the presence of an energetically weak population of ‘nanoflares’ (Parker 1988). A necessary requirement for nanoflares based coronal heating to be effective is that their occurrence rate slopes must be <-2 (Hudson 1991). There is hence a lot of interest in studies of weak nonthermal emissions. Existing studies in EUV and X-ray bands have detected ‘microflares’ with slopes >-2 (e.g. Hannah et al. 2011). Some of the weak meterwave emissions detected are, however, believed to correspond to energies in the ‘picoflare’ range (Ramesh et al. 2013). It is hence, very interesting to study weak nonthermal emissions at metric wavelengths.

Population of high quantum number states can differ from their LTE values at high densities (Ne ~106 − 108 cm−3) and temperatures of the order of 104 K. In this case, the intensity of recombination lines can be strongly amplified. The amount of amplification depends on density and temperature, and it is different for different quantum numbers, allowing the determination of the physical and kinematic conditions of the emitting region through the observation of recombination lines of different quantum numbers. This was the case of the massive binary system η Carinae. This system was observed with ALMA in the recombination lines H21α, H28α, H30α, H40α and H42α and the continuum at the frequencies of the corresponding lines. The continuum spectrum was characteristic of a compact HII region, becoming optically thin at around 300 GHz. From the intensity and width of the recombination lines we concluded that the not-resolved emission region, assumed spherically symmetric, is a shell of 40 AU radius and 4 AU width, expanding at velocities between 20 and 60 km s−1, with density of 107 cm−3 and temperature of 17000 K.

The first hundred years of the IAU have witnessed scientific and technological progress in astronomy beyond anything imagined at the time the IAU was founded in 1919. What will the next hundred years bring? How do we engage with other sciences, now that our field is becoming more multidisciplinary? How do we convince governments to continue funding our field, in particular the ever more powerful telescopes? And how do we continue to inspire and involve people worldwide in our exciting adventure through space? A brief forward look into the next decade and beyond is presented, with some challenges highlighted.

The detection of hydrogen radio-recombination maser lines (RRLs) toward MWC349A in the year 1989 opened the chance to place constraints on the kinematics of an ionized circumstellar disk around a massive star. Since then, a significant number of observations have allowed improving our understanding of this source to the point that we have established that its ionized wind launching occurs at a distance of ~24 au as claimed by disk wind models. On the other hand, this field of study has undergone considerable development over the last six years with the detection of new RRL maser sources. Here, we present a brief summary of all these recent advances and the promising future prospects.

We apply a novel pre-flare tracking of sunspot groups towards improving the estimation of flare onset time by focusing on the evolution of the 3D magnetic field construction of AR 11429. The 3D magnetic structure is based on potential field extrapolation encompassing a vertical range from the photosphere through the chromosphere and transition region into the low corona. The basis of our proxy measure of activity prediction is the so-called weighted horizontal gradient of magnetic field (WGM) defined between spots of opposite polarities close to the polarity inversion line of an active region. The temporal variation of the distance of the barycenter of the opposite polarities is also found to possess potentially important diagnostic information about the flare onset time estimation as function of height similar to its counterpart introduced initially in an application at the photosphere only in Korsós et al. (2015). We apply the photospheric pre-flare behavioural patterns of sunspot groups to the evolution of their associated 3D-constructed AR 11429 as function of height. We found that at a certain height in the lower solar atmosphere the onset time may be estimated much earlier than at the photosphere or at any other heights. Therefore, we present a tool and recipe that may potentially identify the optimum height for flare prognostic in the solar atmosphere allowing to improve our flare prediction capability and capacity.

The discovery of pulsars was closely followed by the discovery of dispersion and scattering in the interstellar plasma (ionized interstellar medium - IISM). The rich phenomena of scattering and scintillation have since been successfully modelled as propagation through a statistically uniform plasma turbulence with an isotropic Kolmogorov spectrum of density. However, this enticingly simple model fails to explain the many recent observations, that show anisotropic scattering from highly localized regions of the IISM often referred to as phase screens. I summarize the recent evidence from pulsars and also from very compact AGN sources, which can exhibit rapid scintillation and occasionally ESEs. The unknown astrophysical origin of these phenomena includes thin current sheets, the diffuse remnants of old supernova shells, and plasma filaments surrounding ubiquitous molecular clumps near young hot stars.

Magnetic reconnections (MRs) for various magnetic field line (MFL) topologies are believed to be the initiators of solar eruptive events like flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Consequently, important is a thorough understanding and quantification of the MFL topology and their evolution which leads to MRs. Contemporary standard is to extrapolate the coronal MFLs using equilibrium models where the Lorentz force on the coronal plasma is zero everywhere. In tandem, a non-force-free-field (NFFF) extrapolation scheme has evolved and allows for a Lorentz force which is non-zero only at the photosphere but asymptotically vanishes with height. The paper reports magnetohydrodynamic (MHD)- simulations initiated by NFFF extrapolation of the coronal MFLs for a flare producing active region NOAA 11158. Interestingly, quasi-separatrix layers (QSLs) which facilitate MRs are detected in the extrapolated MFLs and, here the paper makes an attempt to asses the role of QSLs in the flare onsets.

We present the derived kinematic characteristics of low-α thin-disk and high-α thick-disk stars in the Milky Way, investigated with a sample of about 32,000 G- and K-type dwarfs from the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE). Based on the level of α-element enhancement as a function of [Fe/H], we separate our sample into thin- and thick-disk stars and then derive mean velocities, velocity dispersions, and velocity gradients for the U, V, and W velocity components, respectively, as well as the orbital eccentricity distribution. There are notable gradients in the V velocity over [Fe/H] in both populations: −23 km s−1 dex−1 for the thin disk and +44 km s−1 dex−1 for the thick disk. The velocity dispersion of the thick disk decreases with increasing [Fe/H], while the velocity dispersion gradient over [Fe/H] for the thin disk is almost flat for all velocity components, except for the W velocity dispersion of the metal-poor thin-disk stars. The eccentricity distribution exhibits a peak at a higher value, and is more symmetric as [α/Fe] increases, implying that complex formation mechanisms may be involved. Our results can be used to constrain several proposed disk-formation scenarios of the Milky Way and other large spirals.

Forecasting Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) fluence, as integrated over an SEP event, is an important element when estimating the effect of solar eruptions on humans and technology in space. Current real-time estimates are based on SEP measurements at a single location in space. However, the interplanetary magnetic field corotates with the Sun approximately 13° each day with respect to Earth, thus in 4 days a near-Earth spacecraft will have changed their connection about 60° from the original SEP source. We estimate the effect of the corotation on particle fluence using a simple particle transport model, and show that ignoring corotation can cause up to an order of magnitude error in fluence estimations, depending on the interplanetary particle transport conditions. We compare the model predictions with STEREO observations of SEP events.
