Forecasting Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) fluence, as integrated over an SEP event, is an important element when estimating the effect of solar eruptions on humans and technology in space. Current real-time estimates are based on SEP measurements at a single location in space. However, the interplanetary magnetic field corotates with the Sun approximately 13° each day with respect to Earth, thus in 4 days a near-Earth spacecraft will have changed their connection about 60° from the original SEP source. We estimate the effect of the corotation on particle fluence using a simple particle transport model, and show that ignoring corotation can cause up to an order of magnitude error in fluence estimations, depending on the interplanetary particle transport conditions. We compare the model predictions with STEREO observations of SEP events.

Phylogenetics is a widely used concept in evolutionary biology. It is the reconstruction of evolutionary history by building trees that represent branching patterns and sequences. These trees represent shared history, and it is our contention that this approach can be employed in the analysis of Galactic history. In Galactic archaeology the shared environment is the interstellar medium in which stars form and provides the basis for tree-building as a methodological tool. Using elemental abundances of solar-type stars as a proxy for DNA, we built such an evolutionary tree to study the chemical evolution of the solar neighbourhood and published in Jofré15 et al. (2017). In this proceeding we summarise these results and discuss future prospects.

The first long-term maser (mainly methanol) monitoring program is under way with the radio telescopes of Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Center. The first activity of this program was to develop an observations methodology and data registration and reduction software for the Ventspils telescopes. The developed routines are to be used for maser variability monitoring, investigating short bursts of intensity and a search for new, previously unknown, maser sources. Currently the program consists of 41 methanol masers observed at 6.7 GHz, while new ones are periodically added. The maser sources are observed at 3 – 5 day intervals. It was found that most the sources display a significant level of variability with time, ranging from a few days, up to several months and, perhaps, years. In addition to non-varying masers, several types of maser variability behavior were observed, including: monotonic increases or decreases, un-periodical, quasi-periodic and periodic variations.

Scintillation arcs provide an unprecedented degree of detail into the scattering of radio waves from pulsars. We review evidence that has emerged over the last fifteen years that: a) the scattering of many nearby pulsars is dominated by one or several relatively thin “screens” of material, b) the resulting image on the sky is highly linear, with axial ratios at least as high as 10:1, and c) this arrangement is persistent for at least one source (B1133+16) for at least 25 years. We expand on the idea of Pen and Levin (2014) and previous authors that such scattering may be caused by linear sheets of plasma seen nearly edge-on. Further analysis of such scintillation arcs, including new work on multi-frequency, multi-epoch observations, should help elucidate the astrophysical nature of these ubiquitous scattering entities, which are currently not convincingly linked with any known structures.

We used our detailed analytic local disc model to compare predictions in number counts, colour distribuitons and kinematics with a data set extracted from a combination of TGAS and RAVE catalogues. We find generally a very good agreement with some deviations close to the Galactic plane.

We present the results from an ongoing long-term monitoring of the 22 GHz H2O maser in W49N with the 100-m Effelsberg radio telescope from February 2014 to September 2017. The unique Effelsbergs spectral line observation capability provides a broad velocity range coverage from −500 to +500 km s−1 with a spectral resolution better than 0.1 km/s. Following the strong major outburst in W49N in late 2013, we have started a long-term monitoring programme at Effelsberg. The major outburst feature (up to 80,000 Jy at VLSR − 98 km s−1) faded away by June 2014. However, we found that the site is still active with several high velocity outbursts (both blue and redshifted). Some features appear at extremely high velocities (up to ±280 km s−1) and show rapid flux variations within a 1-2 month period. This sub-year scale variability implies that the water masers could be excited by episodic shock propagation caused by a high-velocity protostellar jet.

This paper summarizes the first tool that is able to predict Ground Level Enhancements (GLE). It makes real-time predictions of the occurrence of GLE events from the analysis of soft X-ray and differential proton flux measured by the GOES satellite network. Before the development of this tool, space weather systems have been warning users about evolving GLE events by processing neutron measurements recorded on ground level. This tool, called HESPERIA UMASEP-500, can predict GLE events before the detection by any neutron monitor (NM) station. The prediction performance measured for the period from 1986 to 2016 is presented for two consecutive periods, because of their notable difference in performance. For the 2000-2016 period, this prediction tool obtained a probability of detection (POD) of 53.8% (7 of 13 GLE events), a false alarm ratio (FAR) of 30.0%, and average warning times (AWT) of 8 min and 15 min with respect to the first NM station’s alert and the GLE Alert Plus warning, respectively. An evolution of the low-frequency pulse profile of PSR B2217+47 is observed during a six-year observing campaign with the LOFAR telescope at 150 MHz. The evolution is manifested as a new component in the profile trailing the main peak. The leading part of the profile, including a newly-observed weak component, is steady during the campaign. The transient component is not visible in simultaneous observations at 1500 MHz using the Lovell telescope, implying a chromatic effect. A variation in the dispersion measure of the source is detected in the same timespan. Precession of the pulsar and changes in the magnetosphere are investigated to explain the profile evolution. However, the listed properties favour a model based on turbulence in the interstellar medium (ISM). This interpretation is confirmed by a strong correlation between the intensity of the transient component and main peak in single pulses. Since PSR B2217+47 is the fourth brightest pulsar visible to LOFAR, we speculate that ISM-induced pulse profile evolution might be relatively common but subtle and that SKA-Low will detect many similar examples. In this scenario, similar studies of pulse profile evolution could be used in parallel with scintillation arcs to characterize the properties of the ISM.

We study the properties of coronal holes during solar cycle 21-23 from the McIntosh archive. In the spatial distribution of coronal hole area we find that there is a sharp increase in coronal hole area at high latitude in agreement with expected open flux configuration there. In overall spatiotemporal distribution of coronal hole centroids, we find the dominance of high latitude coronal holes except for the maximum of the solar cycle, when coronal holes mostly appear in low latitudes. This is in agreement with the expected solar cycle evolution of surface magnetic flux.

We report the discovery of widespread millimeter-wavelength Class I methanol maser emission associated with protostellar molecular outflows in the massive (proto)cluster G11.92−0.61. Our ~0.5″-resolution SMA and ALMA observations of the 229 GHz and 278 GHz Class I transitions reveal seven and twelve candidate masers, respectively: all 229 GHz masers have 278 GHz counterparts, and five are also coincident with 44 GHz Class I masers previously detected with the VLA. For paired masers, the peak intensities at 229 GHz and 278 GHz are correlated. We also find tentative evidence for a correlation between the strength of millimeter-wavelength Class I maser emission and the energy of the associated molecular outflow.

We are performed the digitization of the prominences from the full disk observations of the Sun in the CaIIK line Kodaikanal Observatory for the period 1904-1954. These data were supplemented by digitization of prominences data on Wolfer atlases for the period 1887-1900 and observations of Kislovodsk Observatory in the period 1957-2017. Particular attention was paid to study of the polar crown prominences drift time. The time interval of the prominence drift is ambiguous from the sunspot cycle amplitude.

Open clusters are important objects to study the galactic structure and its dynamical behavior as well as the stellar formation and evolution. We carried out a spectroscopic analysis to derive atmospheric parameters and chemical composition for 52 giant stars within 9 galactic open clusters. We have used the high-resolution spectra from FEROS, HARPS and UVES in the ESO archive. The methodology used is based on LTE-hypothesis. Abundances of C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Ni, YII, LaII, CeII, and NdII were calculated. Although most of these clusters present spectroscopic analysis in the literature, some CNO and s-process abundances were not previously estimated or were calculated with high uncertainties. Several lines of such elements were identified and used to calculate new abundances and improve some previous one.

Forecasting the time of arrival of a Coronal Mass Ejection at Earth is of critical importance for our high-technology society and for any future manned exploration of the Solar System. As critical as the forecast accuracy is the knowledge of its precision, i.e. the error associated to the estimate. Here a statistical approach to the computation of the time of arrival using the Drag-Based Model is proposed through the introduction of probability distributions, rather than exact values, as input parameters, thus allowing the evaluation of the uncertainty on the forecast.

The linearly polarized component of a pulsar signal at different radio frequencies can help to constrain the parallel component of the magnetic field along the line of sight. In this work we measured the polarimetric properties of the pulsars in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae and we report the Rotation Measure (RM) for 13 of them. A gradient in the RM values of the pulsars across the cluster is detected suggesting the presence of significant variations in the magnetic field across the very small angular scales associated with the lines of sight to the pulsars in 47 Tucanae. Both magnetic fields located in the globular cluster or in the Galactic disk in the direction of the cluster are taken into consideration. However, more detailed modelling of the dynamics of the cluster and deeper observations with the MeerKAT and/or the SKA1 radio telescopes are necessary to discriminate among the models.

We have studied three Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections (ICMEs) having clear signatures of magnetic cloud (MC) arrival at 1 AU and their associated solar sources during 2011 to 2013. Comparing the axial magnetic field strength (B0) of the near-Sun coronal flux-ropes with that of the MC at 1 AU, we have found that the average inferred value of B0 at 1 AU assuming the self-similar expansion of the flux-rope is two times smaller than the value of B0 obtained from the results of MC fitting. Furthermore, by comparing the initial orientation of the flux-rope near the Sun and its final orientation at 1 AU we have found that the three CMEs exhibited more than 80° rotation during its propagation through the interplanetary medium. Our study suggests that although the near-Sun magnetic properties of coronal flux-ropes can be used to infer the field strength of the associated MC at 1 AU, it is difficult to estimate the final orientation of the MC axis in order to predict the geo-effectiveness of the ICMEs.

The potential-field source-surface (PFSS) model of the solar corona is a widely used tool in the space weather research and operations. In particular, the PFSS model is used in solar wind forecast models which empirically associate solar wind properties with the numerically derived coronal magnetic field. In the PFSS model, the spherical surface where magnetic field lines are forced to open is typically placed at 2.5 solar radii. However, the results presented here suggest that setting this surface (the source-surface) to lower heights can provide a better agreement between observed and modelled coronal holes during the current solar cycle. Furthermore, the lower heights of the source-surface provide a better match between observed and forecasted solar wind speed.

To explore the relation between bar formation and star formation in Milky Way-type galaxies quantitatively, we simulated gas-rich disk isolated galaxies. We find that the action of the stellar bar efficiently quenches star formation, reducing the star-formation rate by a factor of 10 in less than 1 Gyr. Analytical and self-consistent galaxy simulations with bars suggest that the action of the stellar bar increases the gas random motions within the co-rotation radius of the bar. Indeed, we detect an increase in the gas velocity dispersion at the end of the bar formation phase. The star formation efficiency decreases rapidly, and in all of our models, the bar quenches the star formation in the galaxy. The star-formation efficiency is much lower in simulated barred compared to unbarred galaxies and more rapid bar formation implies more rapid quenching.

Low-frequency polarisation observations of pulsars, facilitated by next-generation radio telescopes, provide powerful probes of astrophysical plasmas that span many orders of magnitude in magnetic field strength and scale: from pulsar magnetospheres to intervening magneto-ionic plasmas including the ISM and the ionosphere. Pulsar magnetospheres with teragauss field strengths can be explored through their numerous emission phenomena across multiple frequencies, the mechanism behind which remains elusive. Precise dispersion and Faraday rotation measurements towards a large number of pulsars probe the three-dimensional large-scale (and eventually small-scale) structure of the Galactic magnetic field, which plays a role in many astrophysical processes, but is not yet well understood, especially towards the Galactic halo. We describe some results and ongoing work from the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) and the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) radio telescopes in these areas. These and other pathfinder and precursor telescopes have reinvigorated low-frequency science and build towards the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), which will make significant advancements in studies of astrophysical magnetic fields in the next 50 years.

We have conducted astrometric observations toward a 22 GHz water maser source associated with the Sgr B2 complex in the Galactic center region with VERA (VLBI exploration of Radio Astrometry). We measured a trigonometric parallax and absolute proper motion of the Sgr B2 complex with respect to an extra-galactic source by observing the water maser source at 10 epochs from 2014 to 2017. The measured distance was 7.52+3.01−1.67 kpc for the Sgr B2M region.

We also succeeded to measure internal motions of maser spots in Sgr B2M, and N region. The number of spots which we could measure the internal motions is about 400. The distribution of the maser spots shows that the maser spots are associated with envelope of HII region seen in radio continuum image obtained with VLA and ALMA. We discuss relative motions between Sgr B2M, and N by using the internal motion.
