The “CepHeus-A Star formation and proper Motions” (CHASM) survey is a large project consisting of a combination of astrometric Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) and Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations, to map both the stellar and dense molecular gas components in the star-forming region Cepheus A. With the VLBA, we make use of the CH3OH and H2O maser emission in the vicinity of Cepheus A HW2, in order to measure accurate proper motions and parallax distances to both T Tauri stars and massive young stellar objects (YSOs) belonging to the same star-forming region. With the Jansky VLA, we make use of the interstellar thermometer NH3, in order to image the molecular clump surrounding Cepheus A HW2 and to determine its physical conditions. By combining these informations all together, we can provide, for instance, a direct measurement of the Bondi-Hoyle accretion radius for a massive young star, namely, HW2.

The daily time series Flare Index (FI) data of Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere and Total Disk for Solar Cycle 21- 23 and 24 up to Dec. 2014 has been pre-processed using a 2nd order exponential smoothing algorithm to remove orthogonal noise. The smoothed data in each case is processed for scaling analysis using Rescaled-Range Analysis as well as Finite Variance Scaling Method in order to search for the Hurst exponent. As the value of H obtained from our analysis lies in between 0 and 1, so it can be said that the signal may behave like Fractional Brownian Motion. Also, it is observed that H is less than 0.5 which indicates the data is anti-persistent in nature and it has a strong negative correlation within the signal. The value of H also indicates the oscillating features of the signal which might have some fundamental periodicities in the Suns atmosphere.

The detection of iso-propyl cyanide (i-C3H7CN) toward the Galactic Center hot-core source Sgr B2(N) (by Belloche et al. 2014) marked the first interstellar detection of an aliphatic molecule with a branched carbon-chain structure. Surprisingly, this branched form was found to have an almost equal abundance with its straight-chain homologue, normal-propyl cyanide (i:n = 0.40 ± 0.06). The detection of this first example of an interstellar molecule with a side-chain raises the question as to how prominent such structures may be in interstellar chemistry, and whether the large branched-to-straight chain ratio is maintained for even larger molecules.

Here are presented recently published models that simulate the chemistry occurring in Sgr B2(N) using a chemical network that explicitly includes the straight-chain and branched forms of propyl cyanide (normal/iso) and butyl cyanide (normal/iso/sec/tert), as well as butane (n/i) and pentane (n/i/neo). Formation is assumed to occur on dust-grain surfaces, but a full complement of destruction mechanisms is included both on the grains and in the gas phase.

The models suggest that branched structures become increasingly dominant as molecular sizes increase. In the case of butyl cyanide, the sec form is at least ∼2 times more abundant than the straight-chain normal form, and together the branched forms dominate normal-butyl cyanide by a factor of at least 3. The results for the larger alkanes suggest similarly large ratios of branched to straight-chain molecules. A key set of reactions in the surface/ice chemistry of interstellar nitriles is found to be the addition of the CN radical to unsaturated hydrocarbons, especially acetylene and ethene. The models also predict that the dominant, sec form of butyl cyanide reaches a peak abundance equal to that of n-propyl cyanide, albeit with a smaller emission radius. This makes s-C4H9CN a good candidate for detection. New ALMA observations to search for this molecule are ongoing.

The largest solar flares, of class X and above, are often associated with strong energetic particle acceleration. Based on the self-similar distribution of solar flares, self-organized criticality models such as sandpiles can be used to successfully reproduce their statistics. However, predicting strong (and rare) solar flares turns out to be a significant challenge. We build here on an original idea based on the combination of minimalistic flare models (sandpiles) and modern data assimilation techniques (4DVar) to predict large solar flares. We discuss how to represent a sandpile model over a reduced set of eigenfunctions to improve the efficiency of the data assimilation technique. This improvement is model-independent and continues to pave the way towards efficient near real-time solutions for predicting solar flares.

The AAOmega Evolution of Galactic Structure (AEGIS) survey (P.I. Keller) was a moderate scale (45 nights) spectroscopic survey carried out with the AAOmega multi-fiber spectrograph at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. The input catalogue for the spectroscopic observations was derived from photometry of approximately 200 two-degree diameter fields obtained during the commissioning of the SkyMapper survey. The data consists of medium-resolution (R ~ 2,000) spectroscopy for approximately 70,000 thick disk and halo stars spanning a survey footprint of 4,900 square degrees. We plan to use the AEGIS data to further characterize the properties of the disk and halo systems and better constrain the assembly history of the Galaxy based on the behavior of the CEMP-no and CEMP-s stars in the sample.

Inspiring Stars (IS) is an itinerant international exhibition promoted by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) to disseminate world initiatives addressing inclusion in astronomy at the professional level. It encompasses (but is not limited to) outreach, teaching and professional aspects of astronomy, with the ultimate goal of evolving from a levelling the playing field to egalitarian participation by all. Here we present the work-in-progress, a framework of bridging activities and inclusion in the social context, which may provide Inspiring Stars with the potential to motivate the next generation and to document comparable data on inclusion in astronomy.

The Submillimeter Array (SMA) has been used to image the emission from radio recombination lines of hydrogen at subarcsecond angular resolution from the young high-mass star MWC349A in the H26α, H30α, and H31α transitions at 353, 232, and 211 GHz, respectively. Emission was seen over a range of 80 km s−1 in velocity and 50 mas (corresponding to 60 AU for a distance of 1200 pc). The emission at each frequency has two distinct components, one from gas in a nearly edge-on annular disk structure in Keplerian motion, and another from gas lifted off the disk at distances of up to about 25 AU from the star. The slopes of the position-velocity (PV) curves for the disk emission show a monotonic progression of the emission radius with frequency with relative radii of 0.85 ± 0.04, 1, and 1.02 ± 0.01 for the H26α, H30α, and H31α transitions, respectively. This trend is consistent with theoretical excitation models of maser emission from a region where the density decreases with radius and the lower transitions are preferentially excited at higher densities. The mass is difficult to estimate from the PV diagrams because the wind components dominate the emission at the disk edges. The mass estimate is constrained to be only in the range of 10–30 solar masses. The distribution of the wind emission among the transitions is surprisingly different, which reflects its sensitivity to excitation conditions. The wind probably extracts significant angular momentum from the system.

This talk commented on our progress in understanding high Ė pulsar output, with the photon power dominated by GeV radiation and the total power dominated by the e±/B wind. We are increasingly appreciating the anisotropy in these outflows, with high energy pulsar beaming probed by the distribution of γ-ray pulse profiles and wind anisotropy mapped by synchrotron images of PWNe. Possible hemispheric asymmetry and the prospects for additional probes of pulsar spindown, particularly from compact binaries in the black widow class, are briefly mentioned.

Phosphorus is a crucial element in prebiotic chemistry, especially the P−O bond, which is key for the formation of the backbone of the deoxyribonucleic acid. So far, PO had only been detected towards the envelope of evolved stars, and never towards star-forming regions. We report the first detection of PO towards two massive star-forming regions, W51 e1/e2 and W3(OH), using data from the IRAM 30m telescope. PN has also been detected towards the two regions. The abundance ratio PO/PN is 1.8 and 3 for W51 and W3(OH), respectively. Our chemical model indicates that the two molecules are chemically related and are formed via gas-phase ion-molecule and neutral-neutral reactions during the cold collapse. The molecules freeze out onto grains at the end of the collapse and desorb during the warm-up phase once the temperature reaches ~35 K. The observed molecular abundances of 10−10 are predicted by the model if a relatively high initial abundance of 5× 10−9 of initial phosphorus is assumed.

Advanced forecasting of space weather requires prediction of near-Earth solar-wind conditions on the basis of remote solar observations. This is typically achieved using numerical magnetohydrodynamic models initiated by photospheric magnetic field observations. The accuracy of such forecasts is being continually improved through better numerics, better determination of the boundary conditions and better representation of the underlying physical processes. Thus it is not unreasonable to conclude that simple, empirical solar-wind forecasts have been rendered obsolete. However, empirical models arguably have more to contribute now than ever before. In addition to providing quick, cheap, independent forecasts, simple empirical models aid in numerical model validation and verification, and add value to numerical model forecasts through parameterization, uncertainty estimation and ‘downscaling’ of sub-grid processes.

We study 30 solar flare events associated with coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that produced geomagnetic storms as measured in Dst index. Our study reveals that the magnitude of Dst index is significantly associated with maximum solar wind speed, peak of Bz component of the IMF and the product of peak Bz and solar wind speed (minimum and maximum). From our investigations, it can be inferred that CMEs travel with higher speed in the beginning and their speed reduces as they reach L1 location.

We report the discovery by APOGEE of five mildly metal-poor ([Fe/H] >−1) anomalous giant stars in the halo/disk/bulge Galaxy with abundances of C, N, and Al that are typically found in globular cluster stars (GCs, see e.g. Carretta et al. 2009a; Mészáros et al. 2015; Pancino et al. 2017; Schiavon et al. 2017a; Tang et al. 2017) and in the inner Galaxy (e.g., Schiavon et al. 2017b; Recio-Blanco et al. 2017) simultaneously with atypical abundances of Mg (Mg-poor: [Mg/Fe] < 0) never before seen in Milky Way (MW) GCs, dwarf galaxies (see Hasselquist et al. 2017) neither in MW field stars. Additionally, four new moderately metal-poor ([Fe/H] <−1) anomalous giant stars (i.e., N-rich, Al-rich and C-poor) with trustly GCs second-generation like chemical patterns were identified within the Galactic bulge, halo and disk field.

We explore morphological, kinematic and chemical trends of boxy/peanut (b/p) bulges of Milky Way (MW)-type galaxies, to better understand the formation history of the MW’s bulge. We show, using N-body simulations with both a kinematically cold and a kinematically hot disc, that colder populations develop a more prominent bar and X-shaped peanut as compared to their hotter counterpart. Colder discs also exhibit lower line-of-sight velocities (when viewed edge-on) at the edges of the b/p compared to hot discs, in agreement with what is seen for the MW bulge. Furthermore, we explore an N-body model which has three co-spatial discs with metallicities which correspond to the stellar populations of the inner Milky Way, where the α-enhanced thick disc populations are massive and centrally concentrated. The metallicity trends seen in observations of the Bulge can be reproduced in the model without the need of adding any additional components, which hints to the disc origin of the MW’s bulge.

Sometimes the explosion of a supernova can generate a pulsar, most of whose rotational energy is carried away by an energetic wind of particles and magnetic fields expanding into its surroundings and eventually forming extended nebulae, i.e. the pulsar wind nebulae. The experimental advances reached in the last decades, from radio frequencies up to the highest gamma-ray energies, with instruments like VLA, VLBA, Chandra, NuStar, Fermi-LAT and H.E.S.S. among the others, led to the discovery of hundreds of this kind of sources allowing for population studies. In addition, this variety of high-precision spectral and morphological measurement provided an unprecedented opportunity to test and push forward the state-of-the-art theoretical models. In this contribution, we will review the latest, and most significant theoretical and experimental results.

We report on a technique to construct a flux rope (FR) from eruption data at the Sun. The technique involves line-of-sight magnetic fields, post-eruption arcades in the corona, and white-light coronal mass ejections (CMEs) so that the FR geometric and magnetic properties can be fully defined in addition to the kinematic properties. We refer to this FR as FRED (Flux Rope from Eruption Data). We illustrate the FRED construction using the 2012 July 12 eruption and compare the coronal and interplanetary properties of the FR. The results indicate that the FRED input should help make realistic predictions of the components of the FR magnetic field in the heliosphere.

We present observations of massive star-forming regions selected from the IRAS Point Source Catalog. The observations were made with the Very Large Array and the Large Millimeter Telescope to search for Class I methanol masers. We made interferometric observations of 125 massive star-forming regions in the 44 GHz methanol maser transition; 53 of the 125 fields showed emission. The data allow us to demonstrate associations, at arcsecond precision, of the Class I maser emission with outflows, HII regions and shocks traced by 4.5 μm emission. We made single-dish observations toward 38 of the 53 regions with 44 GHz masers detected to search for the methanol transitions at 84.5, 95.1, 96.7, 107.0, and 108.8 GHz. We find detection rates of 74, 55, 100, 3, and 45%, respectively. We used a wide-band receiver which revealed many other spectral lines that are common in star-forming regions.

A precise knowledge of solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) irradiance is of great importance for better understanding of Earth′s ionosphere and thermosphere. The search for an ideal solar EUV proxy is vital since the ionospheric and thermospheric models are based on the solar proxies of EUV radiation. In this study, the phase asynchrony analysis of solar EUV data with other solar activity indices during solar cycle 23 is done. The cross-wavelet transform (XWT) technique is used to reveal the phase difference between the two time series of solar indices. Analysis reveals that the phase relationship between the indices is both time and frequency dependent. The solar indices F10.7 and Mg II core-to-wing index are found to be more synchronous with solar EUV data for low frequency components.

Just as in the past, the development of the natural sciences and in particular of astronomy has changed the history of humanity. If we think about the role of our discipline into the future, it shows its enormous power in the field of education, owing to the possibility of awakening interest in science in very varied audiences. Within the framework of the enormous progress made in the technologies related to astronomy, many of them of daily use, the role of the astronomer in the era of Communications acquires fundamental importance.

In this presentation, we will try to make a journey through the different ways of presenting astronomical topics for different audiences over the last 100 years. In turn, we will show some specific achievements, associated with education programmes of the discipline. We discuss the impact produced by proposals that are both rigorous in terms of content, and also appeal to the development of the human being in an integral manner, within the framework of citizen science activities.

For this research, we have taken into account the uninterrupted development of the NASE programme, which has performed 112 courses in 24 countries throughout the world and in different languages. NASE has involved 4966 secondary teachers in the last eight years.

The study of complex organic molecules, and more specifically those of prebiotic interest, is important to understand the chemical richness of star-forming regions. The chemistry of nitrogen bearing molecules such as formamide or methyl isocyanate is poorly constrained. We study different chemical pathways to form and destroy these molecules from both the gas phase and grain surface chemistry. From comparison with observations of four different relevant astrophysical regions, we show that both the gas phase and grain surface chemistry are required to explain the observed abundances of these species.

RR Lyrae variables are old (>10 Gyr) stars and, as such, they are useful probes of the earliest events of star formation in galaxies (Bernard et al. 2008, Martínez-Vázquez et al. 2016) as well as of the galaxy assembly process predicted by ΛCDM simulations of structure formation. In fact, the nature of the building-blocks of galaxies such as the Milky Way, and in particular, those of their stellar haloes, has been a matter of a substantial debate (Venn et al. 2004). Unlike other stellar tracers, RR Lyrae offer a snapshot of the stellar content present at the epoch when most of the merging action is predicted to have taken place, and thus they are ideal witnesses of this process.
