We have combined observations of the Antennae galaxies from the radio interferometer ALMA and from the optical interferometer GHαFaS (Galaxy Hα Fabry-Perot System). The two sets of observations have comparable angular and spectral resolutions, enabling us to identify 142 giant molecular clouds (GMCs) and 303 Hii regions. We have measured, and compared, their basic physical properties (radius, velocity dispersion, luminosity). We study the mass functions of Hii regions and GMCs, where a double population of Hii regions due to a double population of GMCs is found. Using the velocity dispersion measurements, we claim that the difference between the regimes is the nature of the dominant binding force. For the regions in the lower mass range, the dominant force is the external pressure, while in the higher mass range it is the internal gravity of the clouds. We have applied the same method to similar observations (GHαFaS & ALMA) of Arp 236 and NGC 1614 finding similar results.

Supernova remnants are the site of a number of physical processes (shock-heating, non-equilibrium ionization, hydrodynamic instabilities, particle acceleration, magnetic field amplification). Their related emission processes provide us with a large set of observational data. Supernova remnants result from the interaction of high-velocity material ejected by the supernova explosion with the medium surrounding the progenitor star. This interaction gives rise to a double-shock structure that lasts for hundreds of years, with a forward shock and a reverse shock compressing and heating to tens million of degrees the surrounding medium and the ejecta, respectively. It is mostly in this phase that young supernova remnants provide information on their explosion mechanism through spectro-imaging observations of the ejected nucleosynthesis products and their dynamics, notably in the X-ray domain. I will review these observations and their implications for our current understanding of the dynamics of supernova remnants. I will conclude on the prospects with future facilities.

The latest generation of low frequency radio interferometers, e.g. LOFAR, MWA, PAPER, has been pushing down the detection limits on the hydrogen signal from the Epoch of Reionisation. However, due to the challenges posed by foregrounds and instrumental systematics the signal has eluded detection thus far. To overcome these challenges we require a detailed understanding of the calibration of these relatively new telescopes. This led to a renewed interest in redundant calibration. Classical calibration schemes depend on sky models based on limited knowledge of the low frequency sky. Redundant calibration, however, allows us to escape our ignorance as it is sky model independent. We will review the field of redundant calibration, and present work we have undertaken to understand the limitations of this calibration method.

Tidal disruption events are characterized by the prompt release of very high energy electromagnetic radiation, which rapidly carries away a significant fraction of mass-energy. The time scale od prompt release is quite comparable to the time scale of gravitational collapse. We suggest that generation of very high energy radiation from pulsar nebulae may be an example of the relativistic coupling between gravity and electromagnetism. The main ingredient of our picture comes from the observation that the electron - ion energy exchange time scale is much longer than the electron ion energy exchange time scale, which leads to thermodynamic decoupling of electron and ion gases, and thus to their different temperatures. Under such conditions the dominating hotter component pushes the colder component further out and thus generates a global electric field which constrains electrons and ions by their mutually generated electric field, yet allows them to reach very high kinetic energies

Imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) are sensitive to rare gamma-ray photons, buried in the background of charged cosmic-ray (CR) particles, the flux of which is several orders of magnitude greater. The ability to separate gamma rays from CR particles is important, as it is directly related to the sensitivity of the instrument. This gamma-ray/CR-particle classification problem in IACT data analysis can be treated with the rapidly-advancing machine learning algorithms, which have the potential to outperform the traditional box-cut methods on image parameters. We present preliminary results of a precise classification of a small set of muon events using a convolutional neural networks model with the raw images as input features. We also show the possibility of using the convolutional neural networks model for regression problems, such as the radius and brightness measurement of muon events, which can be used to calibrate the throughput efficiency of IACTs.

Most massive stars are so distant that their angular diameters are too small for direct resolution. However, the observational situation is now much more favorable, thanks to new opportunities available with optical/IR long-baseline interferometry. The Georgia State University Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy Array at Mount Wilson Observatory is a six-telescope instrument with a maximum baseline of 330 meters, which is capable of resolving stellar disks with diameters as small as 0.2 milliarcsec. The distant stars are no longer out of range, and many kinds of investigations are possible. Here we summarize a number of studies involving angular diameter measurements and effective temperature estimates for OB stars, binary and multiple stars (including the σ Orionis system), and outflows in Luminous Blue Variables. An enlarged visitors program will begin in 2017 that will open many opportunities for new programs in high angular resolution astronomy.

Space astrometry missions Nano-JASMINE and small-JASMINE are planned in Japan. Data analysis tasks are performed under Gaia-JASMINE collaboration in long time. We expected to achieve 3 mas accuracy in Nano-JASMINE, and 20 micro arcsec in small-JASMINE of astrometric performance. Gaia DR1 publication and instruction is done from NAOJ and Niigata University.

The stellar life cycle is dominated by phases such as the hydrogen-burning stage and the remnant white dwarf cooling phase. However, between these two stages, stars dramatically transform themselves by losing the bulk of their mass. Planetary nebulae (PNe) provide a powerful clue to the processes involved in this transformation, but they are very complex. Over the past 15 years, a new wave of imaging and spectroscopy programs have uncovered the remnants of PNe, white dwarfs, in a wide range of well-measured environments. With this we can map the masses and temperatures of the stellar remnants to the properties of their progenitors. This work has now led to the first uniform mapping of the initial-final mass relation from 1.5 to 7 M⊙. The resulting relation is a fundamental input to our understanding of stellar evolution for low and intermediate-mass stars that produce PNe and has a wide range of applications.

The current archives of LAMOST multi-object spectrograph contain millions of fully reduced spectra, from which the automatic pipelines have produced catalogues of many parameters of individual objects, including their approximate spectral classification. This is, however, mostly based on the global shape of the whole spectrum and on integral properties of spectra in given bandpasses, namely presence and equivalent width of prominent spectral lines, while for identification of some interesting object types (e.g. Be stars or quasars) the detailed shape of only a few lines is crucial. Here the machine learning is bringing a new methodology capable of improving the reliability of classification of such objects even in boundary cases.

We present results of Spark-based semi-supervised machine learning of LAMOST spectra attempting to automatically identify the single and double-peak emission of Hα line typical for Be and B[e] stars. The labelled sample was obtained from archive of 2m Perek telescope at Ondřejov observatory. A simple physical model of spectrograph resolution was used in domain adaptation to LAMOST training domain. The resulting list of candidates contains dozens of Be stars (some are likely yet unknown), but also a bunch of interesting objects resembling spectra of quasars and even blazars, as well as many instrumental artefacts. The verification of a nature of interesting candidates benefited considerably from cross-matching and visualisation in the Virtual Observatory environment.

Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are among the most important gas and dust polluters of the Universe. The latest AGB evolutionary models take into account dust production in the circumstellar envelope of these stars, starting from a detailed computation of the main physical processes and chemical surface variations occurring in this evolutionary phase. Following the formation and growth of dust particles, they provide the unique possibility of interpreting the AGB population observed in resolved galaxies. The first application was for the Spitzer observations of dusty AGBs in the Magellanic Clouds, characterising carbon-rich and oxygen-rich stars in terms of initial mass, epoch of star formation, evolutionary time on the AGB and dust contribution. The same set of models are able to interpret the CNO surface abundances observed for the PNe of the same galaxies.

The matched filtering technique is an efficient method to detect H ii bubbles and absorption regions in radio interferometric observations of the redshifted 21-cm signal from the epoch of reionization and the Cosmic Dawn. Here, we present an implementation of this technique to the upcoming observations such as the SKA1-low for a blind search of absorption regions at the Cosmic Dawn. The pipeline explores four dimensional parameter space on the simulated mock visibilities using a MCMC algorithm. The framework is able to efficiently determine the positions and sizes of the absorption/H ii regions in the field of view.

Two modes of star formation are involved to explain the origin of young stars near Sgr A*. One is a disk-based mode, which explains the disk of stars orbiting Sgr A*. The other is the standard cloud-based mode observed in the Galactic disk. We discuss each of these modes of star formation and apply these ideas to the inner few parsecs of Sgr A*. In particular, we focus on the latter mode in more detail. We also discuss how the tidal force exerted by the nuclear cluster makes the Roche density approaching zero and contributes to the collapse of molecular clouds located tens of parsecs away from Sgr A*.

We report on recent advancement in the theory of light propagation in the Solar System aiming at sub-micro-arcsecond level of accuracy:

1. (1) A solution for the light ray in 1.5PN approximation has been obtained in the field of N arbitrarily moving bodies of arbitrary shape, inner structure, oscillations, and rotational motion.

2. (2) A solution for the light ray in 2PN approximation has been obtained in the field of one arbitrarily moving pointlike body.

Up to ages of ~ 100 Myr, massive clusters are still swamped in large amounts of gas and dust, with considerable and uneven levels of extinction. At the same time, large grains (ices?) produced by type II supernovae profoundly alter the interstellar medium (ISM), thus resulting in extinction properties very different from those of the diffuse ISM. To obtain physically meaningful parameters of stars, from basic luminosities and effective temperatures to masses and ages, we must understand and measure the local extinction law. This problem affects all the massive young clusters discussed in his volume.

We present some Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations for supernova remnants (SNRs), which hints the thicknesses of SNRs’ shells are likely related to the density and density distribution of surrounding interstellar medium (ISM). The simulations show clear formation and evolution of reverse shocks. In addition, we find that stellar winds can blow a bubble around the progenitor stars then lead to weaker radio emission at the center of SNRs.

We summarize here recent work in identifying and characterizing red supergiants (RSGs) in the galaxies of the Local Group.

In this work, we investigate the stellar magnetic activity in the theoretical point of view, through the use of stellar structure and evolution models. We present theoretical values of convective turnover times and Rossby numbers for low-mass stars, calculated with the ATON stellar structure and evolution code. We concentrate our analysis on fully convective and partially convective stars motivated by recent observations of X-ray emission of slowly rotating fully convective stars, which suggest that the presence of a tachocline is not a central key for magnetic fields generation. We investigate the behavior of the convective turnover time evolution, as well as its radial profile inside the star. A discussion about the location where the convective turnover time is calculated in the stellar interior is also addressed. Our theoretical results are compared to observational data from low-mass stars.

We report here on the first results from the Cyg OB2 Radio Survey (COBRaS), which is a UCL-led e-MERLIN legacy project to provide a deep-field radio mapping of the Cygnus OB2 association. The project has been awarded a total allocation of 252 hours at C-band (5 GHz) and 42 hours at L-band (1.6 GHz) to image the core of the cluster.

We discuss in particular the presence of non-thermal radio emission at 20 cm (L-band), and its potential as a highly efficient way to identify binaries via single-epoch observations, particularly for colliding-wind binaries. COBRaS data will provide a powerful tool for establishing binary incidence in Cyg OB2, specifically in the difficult intermediate-period range (1–100 yr).

Ultimately, we aim to assemble a substantial and uniquely sensitive radio dataset, which will be exploited to address several fundamentally important areas of stellar astrophysics, including mass-loss, binary frequency, stellar cluster dynamics, and triggered star-formation.

This contribution describes how low-frequency radio-spectropolarimetric imaging as done for Epoch of Reionization detection is used to investigate the nearby Galactic interstellar medium. The method of Faraday Tomography allows disentangling of every line of sight into various components in Faraday depth, which is a proxy for density-weighted magnetic field. I discuss instrumental biases and side effects of this method, and early results it has yielded.

In this brief invited review, I will attempt to summarise some of the key areas of interest in the study of central stars of planetary nebulae which (probably) will not be covered by other speakers’ proceedings. The main focus will, inevitably, be on the subject of multiplicity, with special emphasis on recent results regarding triple central star systems as well as wide binaries which avoid a common-envelope phase. Furthermore, in light of the upcoming release of Kepler’s Campaign 11 data, I will discuss a few of the prospects from that data including the unique possibility to detect merger products.
