We have detected 13 new runaway-star candidates of spectral type O combining the TGAS (Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution) proper motions from Gaia Data Release 1 (DR1) and the sample from GOSSS (Galactic O-Star Spectroscopic Survey). We have also combined TGAS and Hipparcos proper motions to check that our technique recovers many of the previously known O-type runaways in the sample.

In this work, we built all sky index files from Gaia DR1 catalogue for the high-precision astrometric field solution and the precise WCS coordinates of the moving objects. For this, we used build-astrometry-index program as a part of astrometry.net code suit. Additionally, we added astrometry.net's WCS solution tool to our previously developed software which is a fast and robust pipeline for detecting moving objects such as asteroids and comets in sequential FITS images, called A-Track. Moreover, MPC module was added to A-Track. This module is linked to an asteroid database to name the found objects and prepare the MPC file to report the results. After these innovations, we tested a new version of the A-Track code on photometrical data taken by the SI-1100 CCD with 1-meter telescope at TÜBİTAK National Observatory, Antalya. The pipeline can be used to analyse large data archives or daily sequential data. The code is hosted on GitHub under the GNU GPL v3 license.

We present a database of 11 interplanetary shocks associated to coronal mass ejections (CMEs) observed by STEREO and Wind missions between 2006 and 2011 that show evidence of Type II radio burst. For all events, we calculated the principal characteristics of the shock driver, the intensity and geometrical configuration of the in-situ shock and checked for the existence of in-situ type II radio burst. We made a comparative analysis of two CME events (on 18 August 2010 and 4 June 2011), which are apparently associated to two or more magnetic structures which interact in space (i.e. CMEs, SIRs, CIRs). These events show varied shock configurations and intensities. We found evidence of in-situ type II radio bursts in one of the events studied, suggesting that the geometry of the shock (quasi-perpendicularity) is also critical for the generation and/or detection of radio emission in-situ.

Direct detection of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) via redshifted 21 cm line of H i will reveal the nature of the first stars and galaxies as well as revolutionize our understanding of a poorly explored evolutionary phase of the Universe. Projects such as the MWA, LOFAR, and PAPER commenced in the last decade with the promise of high significance statistical detection of the EoR, but have so far only weakly constrained models owing to unforeseen challenges from bright foreground sources and instrument systematics. It is essential for next generation instruments like the HERA and SKA to have these challenges addressed. I present an analysis of these challenges – wide-field measurements, antenna beam chromaticity, reflections in the instrument, and antenna position errors – along with performance specifications and design solutions that will be critical to designing successful next-generation instruments in enabling the first detection and also in placing meaningful constraints on reionization models.

This article presents an overview of the published results for planetary nebulae based on images and spectroscopy from the PACS, SPIRE, and HIFI instruments on board the Herschel satellite.

Many astronomers working in the field of AstroInformatics write code as part of their work. Although the programming language of choice is Python, a small number (8%) use R. R has its specific strengths in the domain of statistics, and is often viewed as limited in the size of data it can handle. However, Microsoft R Server is a product that removes these limitations by being able to process much larger amounts of data. I present some highlights of R Server, by illustrating how to fit a convolutional neural network using R. The specific task is to classify galaxies, using only images extracted from the Sloan Digital Skyserver.

I present my minority view that the majority (or even all) of core collapse supernovae (CCSNe) are driven by jets rather than by neutrinos, and that the majority of type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) reach their explosion via the core degenerate scenario. New simulations presented at the meeting did not achieve an explosion of CCSNe. I critically examine other arguments that where presented in support of the neutrino-driven model, and present counter arguments that support the jet-driven explosion mechanism. The jets operate via a negative jet feedback mechanism (JFM). The negative feedback mechanism explains the explosion energy being several times the binding energy of the core in most CCSNe. We do not know yet what mechanism explodes massive stars and we do not know yet what evolutionary route leads white dwarfs to explode as SN Ia, and so we must be open to different ideas and critically examine old notions.

In this project, we focus on the analysis of infrared observations of the clumps defined with the Galactic Census of High- and Medium-mass Protostars (ChaMP) (Barnes et al.2011). We derive line of sight infrared extinction values, star counts and protostar candidates around the molecular gas emission obtained with the Mopra telescope. Then, we examine the correlation between radio and infrared properties of the clumps. For this stage of the project, we use the Vela-Carina and 2MASS catalogs to obtain a preliminary understanding of the final results. For the later stages, we will extract infrared photometry from our deep AAT near-IR and Spitzer 3.6 and 4.5 μm images. With the final deep photometry results, we will compile the properties of individual clusters.

We investigate the growth of the Rayleigh–Taylor and Richtmyer–Meshkov instabilities at the interface of the relativistic jet using three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations. The propagation of the relativistic jet that is continuously injected from the boundary of the calculation domain into a uniform ambient medium is solved. We find that the interface of the jet is deformed by a synergetic growth of the Rayleigh–Taylor and Richtmyer–Meshkov instabilities regardless of the launching condition, such as the specific enthalpy of the jet or the effective inertia ratio between the jet and ambient medium. The material mixing between the jet and external medium due to these instabilities causes the deceleration of the jet.

It is well known that the cosmic ray intensity observed at the Earth's surface presents an 11 and 22-yr variations associated with the solar activity cycle. However, the observation and analysis of this modulation through ground muon detectors datahave been difficult due to the temperature effect. Furthermore, instrumental changes or temporary problems may difficult the analysis of these variations. In this work, we analyze the cosmic ray intensity observed since October 1970 until December 2012 by the Nagoya muon detector. We show the results obtained after analyzing all discontinuities and gaps present in this data and removing changes not related to natural phenomena. We also show the results found using the mass weighted method for eliminate the influence of atmospheric temperature changes on muon intensity observed at ground. As a preliminary result of our analyses, we show the solar cycle modulation in the muon intensity observed for more than 40 years.

Recent observations of solar flares at high-frequencies have provided evidence of a new spectral component with fluxes increasing with frequency in the sub-THz to THz range. This new component occurs simultaneously but is separated from the well-known microwave spectral component that maximizes at frequencies of a few to tens of GHz. The aim of this work is to study in detail a mechanism recently suggested to describe the double-spectrum feature observed in solar flares based on the physical process known as microbunching instability, which occurs with high-energy electron beams in laboratory accelerators.

Over the last decade, tremendous strides have been achieved in our understanding of magnetism in main sequence hot stars. In particular, the statistical occurrence of their surface magnetism has been established (~10%) and the field origin is now understood to be fossil. However, fundamental questions remain: how do these fossil fields evolve during the post-main sequence phases, and how do they influence the evolution of hot stars from the main sequence to their ultimate demise? Filling the void of known magnetic evolved hot (OBA) stars, studying the evolution of their fossil magnetic fields along stellar evolution, and understanding the impact of these fields on the angular momentum, rotation, mass loss, and evolution of the star itself, is crucial to answering these questions, with far reaching consequences, in particular for the properties of the precursors of supernovae explosions and stellar remnants. In the framework of the BRITE spectropolarimetric survey and LIFE project, we have discovered the first few magnetic hot supergiants. Their longitudinal surface magnetic field is very weak but their configuration resembles those of main sequence hot stars. We present these first observational results and propose to interpret them at first order in the context of magnetic flux conservation as the radius of the star expands with evolution. We then also consider the possible impact of stellar structure changes along evolution.

In order to understand the star formation process under the influence of H ii regions, we have carried out extensive investigations to well selected star-forming regions which all have been profoundly affected by existing massive O type stars. On the basis of multi-wavelength data from mid-infrared to millimeter collected using Spitzer, Herschel, and ground based radio telescopes, the physical status of interstellar medium and star formation in these regions have been revealed. In a relatively large infrared dust bubble, active star formation is undergoing and the shell is still expanding. Signs of compressed gas and triggered star formation have been tentatively detected in a relatively small bubble. The dense cores in the Rosette Molecular Complex detected at 1.1 mm using SMA have been speculated to have a likely triggered origin according to their spatial distribution. Although some observational results have been obtained, more efforts are necessary to reach trustworthy conclusions.

Magnetic fields are likely to be an efficient mechanism which can affect evolved intermediate mass stars (i.e. post-AGB stars and planetary nebulae) in different ways such as via the shaping of their envelope. However, observational probes for the presence of those fields are still scarce. I will present a summary of the works, including those from our group, on the detection and measurement of magnetic fields in various evolved objects.

Recently, first neutrino-driven supernova explosions have been obtained in 3D, self-consistent, first-principle simulations, these models are still not always exploding robustly and, in general, the explosions are not sufficiently energetic. To constrain the explosion mechanism, and the related uncertainties, it is thus very helpful to consider observational constraints: pulsar kicks, progenitor association and supernova remnants (SNR). Recent observations of asymmetries in the supernova ejecta of Cas A are very promising, to compare to long-term simulations of the explosion. In addition 3D observations of SN87A are becoming more constraining on the geometry of the ejected material during the explosion. In this talk I will discuss our efforts to model the late time evolution of a 3D supernova explosion, where we include the effects of beta decay, which inflates the structures rich in 56Ni. The structures we find in the simulations depend on the quantities plotted.

Contamination due to foregrounds, calibration errors and ionospheric effects pose major challenges in detection of the cosmic 21 cm signal in various Epoch of Reionization (EoR) experiments. We present the results of a study of a field centered on 3C196 using LOFAR Low Band observations, where we quantify various wide field and calibration effects such as gain errors, polarized foregrounds, and ionospheric effects. We observe a ‘pitchfork’ structure in the power spectrum of the polarized intensity in delay-baseline space, which leaks into the modes beyond the instrumental horizon. We show that this structure arises due to strong instrumental polarization leakage (~30%) towards Cas A which is far away from primary field of view. We measure a small ionospheric diffractive scale towards CasA resembling pure Kolmogorov turbulence. Our work provides insights in understanding the nature of aforementioned effects and mitigating them in future Cosmic Dawn observations.

This work emphasizes that heterogeneity, diversity, discontinuity, and discreteness in data is to be exploited in classification and regression problems. A global a priori model may not be desirable. For data analytics in cosmology, this is motivated by the variety of cosmological objects such as elliptical, spiral, active, and merging galaxies at a wide range of redshifts. Our aim is matching and similarity-based analytics that takes account of discrete relationships in the data. The information structure of the data is represented by a hierarchy or tree where the branch structure, rather than just the proximity, is important. The representation is related to p-adic number theory. The clustering or binning of the data values, related to the precision of the measurements, has a central role in this methodology. If used for regression, our approach is a method of cluster-wise regression, generalizing nearest neighbour regression. Both to exemplify this analytics approach, and to demonstrate computational benefits, we address the well-known photometric redshift or ‘photo-z’ problem, seeking to match Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopic and photometric redshifts.

The Cosmological Principle claims that in the large scale average the visible parts of the universe are isotropic and homogeneous. In year 1998 the author, together with his two colleagues, discovered that the BATSE’s short gamma-ray bursts are not distributed isotropically on the sky. This first discovery was followed by other ones confirming both the existence of anisotropies in the angular distribution of bursts and the existence of huge Gpc structures in the spatial distribution. All this means that these anisotropies should reject the Cosmological Principle, because the large scale averaging hardly can be provided. This was claimed in year 2009. The aim of this contribution is to survey these publications since 1998 till today.

Accurate positional measurements of planets and satellites are used to improve our knowledge of their orbits and dynamics, and to infer the accuracy of the planet and satellite ephemerides. With the arrival of the Gaia-DR1 reference star catalog and its complete release afterward, the methods for ground-based astrometry become outdated in terms of their formal accuracy compared to the catalog's which is used. Systematic and zonal errors of the reference stars are eliminated, and the astrometric process now dominates in the error budget.

We present a set of algorithms for computing the apparent directions of planets, satellites and stars on any date to micro-arcsecond precision. The expressions are consistent with the ICRS reference system, and define the transformation between theoretical reference data, and ground-based astrometric observables.
