Youths and kids in Indonesia since almost two decades ago have been showing significant increase of interest in space sciences, especially astronomy. One of the main factors is due to the annual event of National Science Olympiad which includes Astronomy as the subject. The increasing level of public interest, especially younger generation on astronomical events, such as eclipses, moon sightings, meteor showers has been constantly observed from time to time. Being aware that Astronomy course does not included in primary and secondary education level’s curricula, teachers are somewhat desperate and are not capable to play role as clearing house in science related to space. The IAU Network of Astronomy for School Education Network (IAU-NASE) course was started in 2016 in Machung University, East Java as the pilot project in Indonesia. The course has attracted significant interest from teachers and university staff, especially in East and Middle Java Provinces. Being confident with the enthusiasm of teachers who expressed that NASE course could fulfil their needs to teach and instruct students in a very efficient way, it was organized consecutively at Bandar Lampung, Lampung Province in 2018 and 2019 (hosted by Institut Teknologi Sumatera) and in 2020 at Bandung, West Java Province (hosted by Institut Teknologi Bandung). The most recent NASE course on 21–23 August 2020, conducted in on-line mode, was attended by 74 participants, although primarily aimed at 15 School teachers, and was quite successful. The on-line observational activity turned out to be the most impressive session for the participants. We report and review four years of IAU NASE courses in Indonesia, with various documentation and brief analysis of the positive impact to the teachers and instructors attitude in teaching astronomy at secondary level of education.

The intrinsic oxygen fugacity of a planet profoundly influences a variety of its geochemical and geophysical aspects. Most rocky bodies in our solar system formed with oxygen fugacities approximately five orders of magnitude higher than that corresponding to a hydrogen-rich gas of solar composition. Here we derive oxygen fugacities of extrasolar rocky bodies from the elemental abundances in 15 white dwarf (WD) stars polluted by accretion of rocks. We find that the intrinsic oxygen fugacities of rocks accreted by the WDs are similar to those of terrestrial planets and asteroids in our solar system. This result suggests that at least some rocky exoplanets are geophysically and geochemically similar to Earth.

Gravitational lensing from galaxy clusters has great potential for deriving the prevalence and physical properties of ultra-faint galaxies at early times, with recent very impressive results from the Hubble Frontier Fields program. Important issues in deriving the most accurate results are accurate constraints on source sizes and a robust treatment of uncertainties in the magnification models. Using > 3300 z = 2 – 10 galaxies behind the 6 Hubble Frontier Fields clusters and a forwards modeling approach, I describe the efforts of my collaborators and me to map out the galaxy luminosity functions at ∼ − 13 mag from z ∼ 9 to z ∼ 2, i.e, a factor of 1000 below Lå and to the typical luminosity of galaxies suspected to drive cosmic reionization. Additionally, I discuss the constraints we can obtain on the properties of faint sources, in particular their stellar masses, mass-to-light ratios, colors, and stellar population ages. I conclude with a prospective on using cluster lenses to study the distant universe with the James Webb Space Telescope.

High-redshift blazars (z ⩾ 2.5) are one of the most powerful classes of gamma-ray sources in the Universe. These objects posses the highest jet powers and luminosities and have black-hole masses often in excess of 109 solar masses. In addition, high-redshift blazars are important cosmological probes and serve as test objects for blazar evolution models. Due to their large distance, their high-energy emission peak is downshifted to energies below the GeV range, which makes them difficult to study with Fermi/LAT and only the very brightest objects are detectable. Hence, only a small number of high-redshift blazars could be detected with Fermi/LAT so far. In this work, we present a strategy to significantly increase the detection statistics at redshift z ⩾ 2.5 via a search for flaring events in high-redshift gamma-ray blazars whose long-term flux remains below the sensitivity limit of Fermi/LAT. Seven previously GeV undetected high-redshift blazars have been identified from their bright monthly outburst periods, while more detections are expected in the future.

Recent experimental and theoretical works concerning gas-phase radical-neutral reactions involving Complex Organic Molecules are reviewed in the context of cold interstellar objects with a special emphasis on the OH + CH3OH reaction and its potential impact on the formation of CH3O.

Perturbative analyses of planetary resonances commonly predict singularities and/or divergences of resonance widths at very low and very high eccentricities. We have recently re-examined the nature of these divergences using non-perturbative numerical analyses, making use of Poincaré sections but from a different perspective relative to previous implementations of this method. This perspective reveals fine structure of resonances which otherwise remains hidden in conventional approaches, including analytical, semi-analytical and numerical-averaging approaches based on the critical resonant angle. At low eccentricity, first order resonances do not have diverging widths but have two asymmetric branches leading away from the nominal resonance location. A sequence of structures called “low-eccentricity resonant bridges” connecting neighboring resonances is revealed. At planet-grazing eccentricity, the true resonance width is non-divergent. At higher eccentricities, the new results reveal hitherto unknown resonant structures and show that these parameter regions have a loss of some – though not necessarily entire – resonance libration zones to chaos. The chaos at high eccentricities was previously attributed to the overlap of neighboring resonances. The new results reveal the additional role of bifurcations and co-existence of phase-shifted resonance zones at higher eccentricities. By employing a geometric point of view, we relate the high eccentricity phase space structures and their transitions to the shapes of resonant orbits in the rotating frame. We outline some directions for future research to advance understanding of the dynamics of mean motion resonances.

The very brightest z > 6 galaxies are ideal laboratories for studying the physical properties of star-forming objects into the epoch of reionization. Selected from degree-scale, ground-based fields, these rare objects provide a key insight into early dust production and may harbour faint AGN. Targeted follow-up of small samples have unexpectedly shown both Lyman-alpha emission and other rest-frame UV lines (e.g CIV and HeII), suggesting unique star-formation conditions (or AGN) at early times. Furthermore, ALMA observations have revealed that 75% of the star-formation in these galaxies may be obscured. I will talk about HST/ALMA follow-up of bright z ∼ 7 LBGs in COSMOS and present new results from even brighter samples from z = 6 – 9 selected over ∼ 5 deg2. The power of both ALMA and JWST, coupled with the intrinsic luminosity of these sources, will provide a unique insight into the formation and evolution of vigorously star-forming galaxies in the first billion years.

Using WISE data, we calibrated the W2-W3 colors in terms of star formation rates (SFRs) and applied this calibration to a sample of 1285 QSOs with the highest flux quality, covering a range in redshift from z ˜ 0.3 to z ˜ 3.8. According to our calibration, the SFR increases continuously, reaching a value at z ˜ 3.8 about 3 times higher on average than at lower redshift. This increase in SFR is accompanied by an increase of the BH mass by a factor 100 and a gradual increase of the mean Eddington ratio from 0.1 to 0.3 up to z ˜ 1.5 – 2.0, above which the ratio stays constant, despite a significant increase in BH mass. Therefore, QSOs at high redshifts have both more active BHs and higher levels of star formation activity.

Measurement of magnetic field in this layer is challenging both from point of view of observations and interpretation of the data. We present in this work about spectropolarimetric observations of a pore, simultaneously in Ca ii (CaIR) at 854.2 nm (CaIR) and H α (656.28 nm). The observed region includes a small scale energetic event (SSEE) taking place in the region between the pore and the region which show opposite polarity to that of pore at the photosphere. The energetic event appears to be a progressive reconnection event as shown by the time evolution of the intensity profiles. Closer examination of the intensity profiles from the downflow regions suggest that the height of formation of CaIR is higher than that of Hi α, contrary to the current understanding about their height of formation. Preliminary results on the inversion of Stokes-I and V profiles of CaIR are also presented.

Two laboratory emission spectrometers have been designed and described previously. Here, we present a follow-up study with special focus on absolute intensity calibration of the new SURFER-spectrometer (SUbmillimeter Receiver For Emission spectroscopy of Rotational transitions), operational between 300 and 400 GHz and coincident with ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) Band 7.

Furthermore, we present a feasibility study to extend the detection frequencies up to 2 THz. First results have been obtained using the SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for IR Astronomy) upGREAT laboratory setup which is located at the University of Cologne. Pure rotational spectra of the complex molecule vinyl cyanide have been obtained and are used to give an estimate on the sensitivity to record ro-vibrational transitions of molecules with astrophysical importance at 2 THz.

We have constructed an all-sky AGN catalogue, based on optical spectroscopy, from the parent sample of galaxies in the 2MASS Redshift Survey (2MRS), a near-complete census of the nearby (z < 0.09) universe. In addition to identifying the 8491 AGNs and providing line measurements for all the emission line galaxies so that the users can customise the selection criteria, we assess the affects of spectral quality on AGN identification. We find that spectral signal-to-noise and resolution affect not only the overall AGN detection rates but also the broad-line to narrow-line AGN ratios. These systematic effects must be taken into account when using any optical AGN catalogue and in comparing the results from different catalogues. We develop a way to account for the inhomogeneities by parametrizing the AGN detection rates as a function of the spectral signal-to-noise, making our catalogue suitable for statistical analyses. We will also present cross-correlation studies between this catalogue and all-sky catalogs at other wavelengths to better understand the different physical processes which lead to the emission at different wavelengths.

Planetary material in the atmospheres of white dwarfs is thought to be scattered inwards from outer planetary systems. Dusty emission in the infrared traces the accretion. As the scattering of many small asteroids is a stochastic process, variability in the infrared emission is predicted. We report a 3 year near-infrared (J, H and K) monitoring campaign of 34 dusty, polluted white dwarfs which aims to search for dust emission variability. We find all white dwarfs have consistent near-infrared fluxes, implying the excess emission is stable. This suggests tidal disruption events which lead to large variabilities are rare and quick (<1 year) and become stable within a few years. For WD 0408–041, the system that shows both increases and decreases in dust emission over 11 years, our K band data suggest a potential colour change associated with the dust emission that needs further confirmation.

In Thailand, annually there are more than 50 high school students presenting in the Thai Astronomical Conference (Student Session) and more than 20 high school students joining research activities mentored by their teachers and NARIT staff through the “Advanced Teacher Training” scheme. These opportunities offer a unique experience for students to learn various skills through proposing a research question, design research methodologies, acquire different knowledge conducting research, present and communicate their results and response to criticism. Data collection for this qualitative research study is conducted through interviews with the senior high school students who completed their research presentations, with a control group of students who did not have research-based learning experience but had other informal learning experiences such as planetarium visit, or after school astronomy activities. The study looks into students’ learning behaviour, attitude towards science, skills acquired for other subjects, interest in science careers.

By considering a modified version of the evolutionary population synthesis (EPS) model for stellar populations (SPs) comprising binary stars, the retrieved galaxy and HII-region parameters/properties differ from the case of neglecting binary stars. The retrieved age, stellar metallicity and mass of galaxies increase (e.g. ∼ 0.2 dex when using spectral fitting algorithm), whilst the star formation rate decreases (∼0.2 dex). The radiation fields from intermediate-age SPs with binary stars could be potentially important ionizing sources in HII regions. Under this possibility, the theoretical division between star forming galaxy and AGN on the diagnostic diagrams would move towards the up-right corner and the retrieved gaseous metallicity would decrease.

Our prediction for the birth rate of binary neutron stars in SPs ranges from 10−9 to 10−6${\M {^\minus 1_\odot}} $ yr−1 when the kick velocity is from 0 to 190 km s−1.

The interplanetary magnetic field may cause large amplitude changes in the orbital inclinations of charged dust particles. In order to study this effect in the case of dust grains moving in 1:1 mean motion resonance with planet Jupiter, a simplified semi-analytical model is developed to reduce the full dynamics of the system to the terms containing the information of the secular evolution dominated by the Lorentz force. It was found that while the planet causes variations in all orbital elements, the influence of the magnetic field most heavily impacts the long-term evolution of the inclination and the longitude of the ascending node. The simplified secular-resonant model recreates the oscillations in these parameters very well in comparison to the full solution, despite neglecting the influence of the magnetic field on the other orbital parameters.

Planetary materials orbiting white dwarf stars reveal the ultimate fate of the planets of the Solar System and all known transiting exoplanets. Observed metal pollution and infrared excesses from debris disks support that planetary systems or their remnants are common around white dwarf stars; however, these planets are difficult to detect since a very high orbital inclination angle is required for a small white dwarf to be transited, and these transits have very short (minute) durations. The low odds of catching individual transits could be overcome by a sufficiently wide and fast photometric survey. I demonstrate that, by obtaining over 100 million images of white dwarf stars with 30-second exposures in its first three years, the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) is likely to record the first exoplanetary transits of white dwarfs, as well as new systems of transiting, disintegrating planetesimals. In these proceedings, I describe my project strategy to discover these systems using the ZTF data.

Complex organic molecules (COMs) have been detected in the gas-phase in cold and lightless molecular cores. Recent solid-state laboratory experiments have provided strong evidence that COMs can be formed on icy grains through ‘non-energetic’ processes. In this contribution, we show that propanal and 1-propanol can be formed in this way at the low temperature of 10 K. Propanal has already been detected in space. 1-propanol is an astrobiologically relevant molecule, as it is a primary alcohol, and has not been astronomically detected. Propanal is the major product formed in the C2H2 + CO + H experiment, and 1-propanol is detected in the subsequent propanal + H experiment. ALMA observations towards IRAS 16293-2422B are discussed and provide a 1-propanol:propanal upper limit of < 0.35–0.55, which are complemented by computationally-derived activation barriers in addition to the performed laboratory experiments.

The Herschel Extragalactic Legacy Project (HELP) focuses to publish an astronomical multiwavelength catalogue of millions of objects over 1300 deg2 of the Herschel Space Observatory survey fields. Millions of galaxies with ultraviolet–far infrared photometry make HELP a perfect sample for testing spectral energy distribution fitting models, and to prepare tools for next-generation data. In the frame of HELP collaboration we estimated the main physical properties of all galaxies from the HELP database and we checked a new procedure to select peculiar galaxies from large galaxy sample and we investigated the influence of used modules for stellar mass estimation.

We study the evolution of the decaying active region NOAA 12708, from the photosphere up to the corona using high resolution, multi-wavelength GREGOR observations taken on May 9, 2018. We utilize spectropolarimetric scans of the 10830 Å spectral range by the GREGOR Infrared Spectrograph (GRIS), spectral imaging time-series in the Na ID2 spectral line by the GREGOR Fabry-Pérot Interferometer (GFPI) and context imaging in the Ca IIH and blue continuum by the High-resolution Fast Imager (HiFI). Context imaging in the UV/EUV from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) complements our dataset. The region under study contains one pore with a light-bridge, a few micro-pores and extended clusters of magnetic bright points. We study the magnetic structure from the photosphere up to the upper chromosphere through the spectropolarimetric observations in He II and Si I and through the magnetograms provided by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI). The high-resolution photospheric images reveal the complex interaction between granular-scale convective motions and a range of scales of magnetic field concentrations in unprecedented detail. The pore itself shows a strong interaction with the convective motions, which eventually leads to its decay, while, under the influence of the photospheric flow field, micro-pores appear and disappear. Compressible waves are generated, which are guided towards the upper atmosphere along the magnetic field lines of the various magnetic structures within the field-of-view. Modelling of the He i absorption profiles reveals high velocity components, mostly associated with magnetic bright points at the periphery of the active region, many of which correspond to asymmetric Si I Stokes-V profiles revealing a coupling between upper photospheric and upper chromospheric dynamics. Time-series of Na ID2 spectral images reveal episodic high velocity components at the same locations. State-of-the-art multi-wavelength GREGOR observations allow us to track and understand the mechanisms at work during the decay phase of the active region.

Distant luminous Lyman-α emitters are excellent targets for detailed observations of galaxies in the epoch of reionisation. Spatially resolved observations of these galaxies allow us to simultaneously probe the emission from young stars, partially ionised gas in the interstellar medium and to constrain the properties of the surrounding hydrogen in the circumgalactic medium. We review recent results from (spectroscopic) follow-up studies of the rest-frame UV, Lyman-α and [CII] emission in luminous galaxies observed ∼500 Myr after the Big Bang with ALMA, HST/WFC3 and VLT/X-SHOOTER. These galaxies likely reside in early ionised bubbles and are complex systems, consisting of multiple well separated and resolved components where traces of metals are already present.
