Gas accretion onto central supermassive black holes of active galaxies and resulting energy feedback, is an important component of galaxy evolution, whose details are still unknown especially at early cosmic epochs. We investigate BH growth and feedback in quasar-host galaxies at z ⩾ 6 by performing cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. We simulate the 2R200 region around a 2 × 1012 Mʘ halo at z = 6, inside a (500 Mpc)3 comoving volume, using the zoom-in technique. We find that BHs accrete gas at the Eddington rate over z = 9–6. At z = 6, our most-massive BH has grown to MBH = 4 × 109 Mʘ. Star-formation is quenched over z = 8–6.

Distant luminous Lyman-α emitters are excellent targets for detailed observations of galaxies in the epoch of reionisation. Spatially resolved observations of these galaxies allow us to simultaneously probe the emission from young stars, partially ionised gas in the interstellar medium and to constrain the properties of the surrounding hydrogen in the circumgalactic medium. We review recent results from (spectroscopic) follow-up studies of the rest-frame UV, Lyman-α and [CII] emission in luminous galaxies observed ∼500 Myr after the Big Bang with ALMA, HST/WFC3 and VLT/X-SHOOTER. These galaxies likely reside in early ionised bubbles and are complex systems, consisting of multiple well separated and resolved components where traces of metals are already present.

We investigate the relative fraction of the emission generated by star formation and nuclear activities in 6 nearby HII galaxies selected from the first high resolution radio data release of LeMMINGS, the Legacy e-MERLIN Multi-band Imaging of Nearby Galaxies Survey. These galaxies are supposed to be powered solely by star formation according to the BPT diagram but exhibit jetted morphologies on parsec scales indicating the presence of a low luminosity AGN. We further carried out a multi-wavelength SED fiiting and analysis using the CIGALE code, estimating stellar masses and star formation rates.

Close encounters or resonances overlaps can create chaotic motion in small bodies in the Solar System. Approaches that measure the separation rate of trajectories that start infinitesimally near, or changes in the frequency power spectrum of time series, among others, can discover chaotic motion. In this paper, we introduce the ACF index (ACFI), which is based on the auto-correlation function of time series. Auto-correlation coefficients measure the correlation of a time-series with a lagged duplicate of itself. By counting the number of auto-correlation coefficients that are larger than 5% after a certain amount of time has passed, we can assess how the time series auto-correlates with each other. This allows for the detection of chaotic time-series characterized by low ACFI values.

Ultra-deep observations of blank fields with the Hubble Space Telescope have made important inroads in characterizing galaxy populations at redshift z = 6 – 10. Gravitational lensing by massive galaxy clusters offers a new route to identify the faintest sources at the epoch of reionization. In particular, thanks to the Hubble Frontier Fields program, we robustly pushed the detection limit down to MAB = − 15 mag at z ∼ 6. I will present the latest results based on the complete dataset of the HFF clusters and parallel fields, and their implications on the ability of galaxies to reionize the Universe. I will also discuss the results of a comprehensive end-to-end modeling effort towards constraining the systematic uncertainties of the lens models, which are currently the last hurdle before extending the UV LF to fainter luminosities. Finally, I will discuss the great discoveries awaiting combination of such cosmic lenses with the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope and the exciting opportunity to probe the turnover of the UV LF, hence the limit of the star formation process at those early epochs.

Although AGN do not typically dominate the bolometric emission of dusty star forming galaxies, large AGN fractions (sometimes > 40%) have been observed in various sub-millimeter surveys. These diagnostics have been however mostly based on X-ray counterpart selections and a complete multiwavength census of the fraction of AGN hosts is needed. I will present new advances in the modelling of panchromatic spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of active galactic nuclei (AGN), based on our publicly available code AGNfitter (Calistro-Rivera et al.2016). AGNfitter implements a fully Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to fit the spectral energy distributions of AGNs pushing the wavelengths frontiers from the radio to the X-rays. I will present a recent application of AGNfitter on dusty star forming galaxies in the ALESS submillimeter survey to obtain an unbiased multiwavelength characterisation of the nuclear activity buried in dusty star formation. Our method reveals a significantly larger contribution of AGN activity to the emission in these galaxies than previously observed based on X-rays diagnostics. Our method represents a unique tool to potentially characterise an unbiased accretion history of the Universe when applied to larger populations of star-forming galaxies.

Knowing the late stages of the stellar evolution is crucial for understanding the fate of planets around subdwarfs and white dwarfs. Simulations by (Staff et al.2016) show, that exoplanets engulfed in the extending stellar envelope will quickly spiral down onto the parent star. Therefore, we do not expect to find planets on close by orbits to the subdwarfs (Blokesz et al.2019) or white dwarfs. However, the recent observation of planetary debris around WD 1145+017 white dwarf suggests, there might exists planets farther away from these stars. Using binarograms, O-C diagrams and Fourier transform for the Kepler space telescope data, we investigate a problem of missing planets around white dwarfs in binary systems, single white dwarfs and subdwarfs type B. The last ones, being the only stars which (due to the lack of hydrogen) go directly to the white dwarf cooling track after their red giant phase.

The Astronomical Society of the University of Carabobo (SAUC) is an activity of permanent scientific dissemination, which uses Astronomy as a tool for the scientific enculturation of the local population and non-formal teaching of Science and Technology. The SAUC base their Learning activities through the Bachelard epistemology and Morin pedagogy. Furthermore the focus of the dissemination and popularization of Astronomy must focus on knowledge for life and on overcoming epistemic obstacles between knowledge expert and knowledge taught. The SAUC’s activities are focused on holding Master Class, seminars, astronomy courses for amateurs; development of multimedia materials and the national astronomical ephemeris. The qualitative evaluation, after two decades of activities of the SAUC allows us to conclude that astronomy can affect as a motivating axis for cultural appropriation and scientific enculturation by broad sectors of the local community, regardless of age, gender, race, socio-economic activity, or ideological-cultural diversity.

We present the first images of a coordinated campaign to follow active region NOAA 12709 on 2018 May 13 as part of a joint effort between three observatories (China-Europe). The active region was close to disk center and enclosed a small pore, a tight polarity inversion line and a filament in the chromosphere. The active region was observed with the 1.5-meter GREGOR solar telescope on Tenerife (Spain) with spectropolarimetry using GRIS in the He i 10830 Å spectral range and with HiFI using two broad-band filter channels. In addition, the Lomnicky Stit Observatory (LSO, Slovakia) recorded the same active region with the new Solar Chromospheric Detector (SCD) in spectroscopic mode at Hα 6562 Å. The third ground-based telescope was located at the Fuxian Solar Observatory (China), where the active region was observed with the 1-meter New Vacuum Solar Telescope (NVST), using the Multi-Channel High Resolution Imaging System at Hα 6562 Å. Overlapping images of the active region from all three telescopes will be shown as well as preliminary Doppler line-of-sight (LOS) velocities. The potential of such observations are discussed.

A key element when modeling dust in any astrophysical environment is a self-consistent treatment of the evolution of the dust material properties (size distribution, chemical composition and structure) as they react to and adjust to the local radiation field intensity and hardness and to the gas density and dynamics. The best way to achieve this goal is to anchore as many model parameters as possible to laboratory data. In this paper, I present two examples to illustrate how outstanding questions in dust modeling have been/are being moved forward by recent advances in laboratory astrophysics and what laboratory data are still needed to further advance dust evolution models.

Our multi-component photometric decomposition of the largest galaxy sample to date with dynamically-measured black hole masses nearly doubles the number of such galaxies. We have discovered substantially modified scaling relations between the black hole mass and the host galaxy properties, including the spheroid (bulge) stellar mass, the total galaxy stellar mass, and the central stellar velocity dispersion. These refinements partly arose because we were able to explore the scaling relations for various sub-populations of galaxies built by different physical processes, as traced by the presence of a disk, early-type versus late-type galaxies, or a Sérsic versus core-Sérsic spheroid light profile. The new relations appear fundamentally linked with the evolutionary paths followed by galaxies, and they have ramifications for simulations and formation theories involving both quenching and accretion.

Early-type galaxies (ETGs) are of crucial importance to trace back the galaxy mass assembly across cosmic time, yet their formation and quenching remain remarkably elusive. The discoveries of massive, dead galaxies at ever-growing redshifts provided compelling evidence to push their formation up to redshift > 4–5 when the Universe was barely 1 Gyr old. In this talk I will present our results on the ages of a new sample of ETGs at z ∼ 3, built by exploiting HST WFC3/G141 rest-frame optical/near-UV grism spectroscopy to study the nature of 10 passive galaxy candidates at 2.5 < z < 3.5 in COSMOS.

This work is part of a PhD project aimed at quantifying the parent space density of distant genuine passive galaxies. I will also discuss the importance of multi-wavelength data in clarifying the degree of contamination by dusty star-forming galaxies affecting the color selection.

An exotic molecular inventory exists in space. While some species have well-known terrestrial analogs, others are very reactive and can hardly survive in the laboratory timely to allow for their characterization. With an eye toward these latter, we highlight in this contribution the role of quantum chemistry in providing astrochemically relevant data where experiment struggles. Special attention is given to the concept of molecular potential energy surfaces (PESs), a key aspect in theoretical chemical physics, and the possible dynamical attributes taken therefrom. As case studies, we outline our current efforts in obtaining global PESs of carbon clusters. It is thus hoped that, with such an active synergy between theoretical chemistry and state-of-the-art experimental/observational techniques (the pillars to the modern laboratory astrophysics), scientists may gather the required knowledge to explain the origins, abundances and the driving force toward molecular complexity in the Universe.

Theories that attempt to unify the four fundamental interactions and alternative theories of gravity predict time and/or spatial variation of the fundamental constants of nature. Different versions of these theories predict different behaviours for these variations. As a consequence, experimental and observational bounds are an important tool to check the validity of such proposals. In this paper, we review constraints on the possible variation of the fundamental constants from astronomical observations and geophysical experiments designed to test the constancy of the fundamental constants of nature over different timescales. We also focus on the limits that can be obtained from white dwarfs, which can constrain the variation of the constants with the gravitational potential.

This communication introduces two cases of the use of astronomy as a motivating context to interdisciplinary science education with emphasis on modeling activities. Firstly, a dedicated software, called SalsaJ, allows students to reproduce the same data analysis as made by astronomers. The case of exoplanet detection will be used as an exemple. Secondly, bodies of learners are considered to model movements of planets with a Human Orrery (a Spatio-Temporal Map of the Solar System), connecting thus mathematics, physics, geography and arts.

We present a closed-form normalization method suitable for the study of the secular dynamics of small bodies inside the trajectory of Jupiter. The method is based on a convenient use of a book-keeping parameter introduced not only in the Lie series organization but also in the Poisson bracket structure employed in all perturbative steps. In particular, we show how the above scheme leads to a redefinition of the remainder of the normal form at every step of the formal solution of the homological equation. An application is given for the semi-analytical representation of the orbits of main belt asteroids.

The dynamo mechanism, responsible for the solar magnetic activity, is still an open problem in astrophysics. Different theories proposed to explain such phenomena have failed in reproducing the observational properties of the solar magnetism. Thus, ab-initio computational modeling of the convective dynamo in a spherical shell turns out as the best alternative to tackle this problem. In this work we review the efforts performed in global simulations over the past decades. Regarding the development and sustain of mean-flows, as well as mean magnetic field, we discuss the points of agreement and divergence between the different modeling strategies. Special attention is given to the implicit large-eddy simulations performed with the EULAG-MHD code.

We present a machine learning methodology to separate quasars from galaxies and stars using data from S-PLUS in the Stripe-82 region. In terms of quasar classification, we achieved 95.49% for precision and 95.26% for recall using a Random Forest algorithm. For photometric redshift estimation, we obtained a precision of 6% using k-Nearest Neighbour.

Characterising primeval galaxies entails the challenging goal of observing galaxies with modest star formation rates (SFR < 100 Mȯyr−1) and approaching the beginning of the reionisation epoch (z > 6). To date a large number of primeval galaxies have been identified thanks to deep near-infrared surveys. However, to further our understanding on the formation and evolution of such primeval objects, we must investigate their nature and physical properties through multi-band spectroscopic observations. Information on dust content, metallicity, interactions with the surrounding environment, and outflows can be obtained with ALMA observations of far-infrared (FIR) lines such as the [Cii] at 158 μm and [Oiii] at 88 μm. Here, we, thus, discuss the recent results unveiled by ALMA observations and present new [Cii] observations of BDF-3299, a star-forming galaxy at z = 7.1 showing a spatial and spectral offset between the rest-frame UV and the FIR lines emission.

We study star formation and metallicity enrichment histories of 24 massive galaxies at 1.6 < z < 2.5. Deep slitless spectroscopy + imaging data set collected from multiple HST surveys allows robust determination of their SEDs. Our new SED modeling with no functional assumptions on star formation histories revels that 1. most of the sample galaxies have already formed >50% of their extant masses ∼1.5 Gyr before the time of observed redshifts, with a trend where more massive galaxies form earlier, 2. most of our galaxies already have stellar metallicities compatible with those of local early-type galaxies, and 3. inferred metallicities are on average ∼ 0.25 dex higher than observed gas-phase metallicities of star forming galaxies at the time of their formation. Continuation of low-level star formation, rather than abrupt termination of star forming activity, may explain the observed gap of metallicities.
