X-rays give direct evidence of instabilities, time-variable structure, and shock heating in the winds of O stars. The observed broad X-ray emission lines provide information about the kinematics of shock-heated wind plasma, enabling us to test wind-shock models. And their shapes provide information about wind absorption, and thus about the wind mass-loss rates. Mass-loss rates determined from X-ray line profiles are not sensitive to density-squared clumping effects, and indicate mass-loss rate reductions of factors of 3 to 6 over traditional diagnostics that suffer from density-squared effects. Broad-band X-ray spectral energy distributions also provide mass-loss rate information via soft X-ray absorption signatures. In some cases, the degree of wind absorption is so high, that the hardening of the X-ray SED can be quite significant. We discuss these results as applied to the early O stars ζ Pup (O4 If), 9 Sgr (O4 V((f))), and HD 93129A (O2 If*).

Recent PIC simulations of relativistic electron-positron (electron-ion) jets injected into a stationary medium show that particle acceleration occurs in the shocked regions. Simulations show that the Weibel instability is responsible for generating and amplifying highly nonuniform, small-scale magnetic fields and for particle acceleration. These magnetic fields contribute to the electron's transverse deflection behind the shock. The “jitter” radiation from deflected electrons in turbulent magnetic fields has different properties from synchrotron radiation calculated in a uniform magnetic field. This jitter radiation may be important for understanding the complex time evolution and/or spectral structure of gamma-ray bursts, relativistic jets in general, and supernova remnants. In order to calculate radiation from first principles and go beyond the standard synchrotron model, we have used PIC simulations. We will present detailed spectra for conditions relevant to various astrophysical sites of collisionless shock formation. In particular we will discuss application to GRBs and SNRs.

Radio observations show that magnetic fields are present in dwarf irregular galaxies (dIrr) and its strength is comparable to that found in spiral galaxies. Slow rotation, weak shear and shallow gravitational potential are the main features of a typical dIrr galaxy. These conditions of the interstellar medium in a dIrr galaxy seem to unfavourable for amplification of the magnetic field through the dynamo process. Cosmic-ray driven dynamo is one of the galactic dynamo model, which has been successfully tested in case of the spiral galaxies. We investigate this dynamo model in the ISM of a dIrr galaxy. We study its efficiency under the influence of slow rotation, weak shear and shallow gravitational potential. Additionally, the exploding supernovae are parametrised by the frequency of star formation and its modulation, to reproduce bursts and quiescent phases. We found that even slow galactic rotation with a low shearing rate amplifies the magnetic field, and that rapid rotation with a low value of the shear enhances the efficiency of the dynamo. Our simulations have shown that a high amount of magnetic energy leaves the simulation box becoming an efficient source of intergalactic magnetic fields.

Using the RMHD code MRGENESIS and the radiative transfer code SPEV we compute multiwavelength afterglow light curves of magnetized ejecta of gamma-ray bursts interacting with a uniform circumburst medium. We are interested in the emission from the reverse shock when ejecta magnetization varies from σ0 = 0 to σ0 = 1. For typical parameters of the ejecta, the emission from the reverse shock peaks for magnetization σ0 ~ 0.01 − 0.1, and is suppressed for higher σ0. We fit the early afterglow light curves of GRB 990123 and 090102 and discuss the possible magnetization of the outflows of these bursts. Finally we discuss the amount energy left in the magnetic field which is available for dissipation at later afterglow stages.

With the end of answer questions as, how common are planetary systems like our own in the Universe? and What is the diversity of planetary systems that we could find in the universe?, we develop a semi-analytical model for computing planetary systems formation and consider different initial conditions for generating a large sample of planetary systems, which is analysed statistically. We explore the effects in the planetary system architecture of assuming different initial disc profiles and planetary migration rates.

By making use of the MHD self-induction equation in general relativity (GR), recently derived by Clarkson and Marklund (2005), it is shown that when Friedmann universe possesses a spatial section whose Riemannian curvature is negative, the magnetic energy bounds computed by Nuñez (2002) also bounds the growth rate of the magnetic field given by the strain matrix of dynamo flow. Since in GR-MHD dynamo equation, the Ricci tensor couples with the universe magnetic field, only through diffusion, and most ages are highly conductive the interest is more theoretical here, and only very specific plasma astrophysical problems can be address such as in laboratory plasmas. Magnetic fields and the negative curvature of some isotropic cosmologies, contribute to enhence the amplification of the magnetic field. Ricci curvature energy is shown to add to strain matrix of the flow, to enhance dynamo action in the universe. Magnetic fluctuations of the Clarkson-Marklund equations for a constant magnetic field seed in highly conductive flat universes, leads to a magnetic contrast of ≈ 2, which is well within observational limits from extragalactic radiosources of ≈ 1.7. In the magnetic helicity fluctuations the magnetic contrast shows that the dynamo effects can be driven by these fluctuations.

A simple nonlinear model is introduced here to describe the rotational evolution of main sequence cool (FGKM) stars. It is formulated only in terms of the ratio of a star's rotation period, P, to its convective turnover timescale, τ, and two dimensionless constants which are specified using solar- and open cluster data. The model explains the origin of the two sequences, C/fast and I/slow, of rotating stars observed in open cluster color-period diagrams, and describes their evolution from C-type to I-type through the rotational gap, g, separating them. It explains why intermediate-mass open cluster stars have the longest periods, while higher- and lower-mass cool stars have shorter periods. It provides an exact expression for the age of a rotating cool star in terms of P and τ, thereby generalizing gyrochronology. The possible range of initial periods is shown to contribute upto 128 Myr to the gyro age errors of solar mass field stars. A transformation to color-period space shows how this model explains some detailed features in the color-period diagrams of open clusters, including the shapes and widths of the sequences, and the observed number density of stars across these diagrams.

The Herbig Ae/Be stars are the high-mass counterparts of the T Tauri stars, and are therefore considered as the pre-main sequence progenitors of the A/B stars. These stars are still contracting towards the main sequence, and are surrounded by dust and gas, remnants of their parental molecular cloud. In order to understand the formation processes at high mass, as well as the magnetic and rotation properties of the MS A/B stars, it is fundamental to understand the structure of the circumstellar matter of the Herbig Ae/Be stars, as well as the interaction of these PMS stars with their close environment. In this talk I will review our current knowledge about the properties of the circumstellar environment of the Herbig Ae/Be stars as well as the possible physical processes at the origin of their observed activities.

Several statistical studies - done also by the authors of this contribution - show that there are three subclasses of gamma-ray bursts. They can be called as short, intermediate and long ones, because they can be separated with respect to their durations. The short and intermediate bursts are distributed anisotropically on the sky. This behavior is highly remarkable, and can have a cardinal impact on the cosmology. The subject of this contribution is a survey of this topic.

Classical Be stars, in addition to their emission-line spectra, are associated with infrared excess which is attributable to free-free emission from ionized gas. However, a few with exceptionally large near-infrared excess, namely with J–H, and H–Ks both greater than 0.6 mag—and excess emission extending to mid- and far-infrared wavelengths—must be accounted for by thermal emission from circumstellar dust. Evolved Be stars on the verge of turning off the main sequence may condense dust in their expanding cooling envelopes. The dust particles should be very small in size, hence reprocess starlight efficiently. This is in contrast to Herbig Ae/Be stars for which the copious infrared excess arises from relatively large grains as part of the surplus star-forming materials.

We study the global evolution of the magnetic field and interstellar medium (ISM) of the barred and ringed galaxies in the presence of non-axisymmetric components of the potential, i.e. the bar and/or the oval perturbations. The magnetohydrodynamical dynamo is driven by cosmic rays (CR), which are continuously supplied to the disk by supernova (SN) remnants. Additionally, weak, dipolar and randomly oriented magnetic field is injected to the galactic disk during SN explosions. To compare our results directly with the observed properties of galaxies we construct realistic maps of high-frequency polarized radio emission. The main result is that CR driven dynamo can amplify weak magnetic fields up to few μG within few Gyr in barred and ringed galaxies. What is more, the modelled magnetic field configuration resembles maps of the polarized intensity observed in barred and ringed galaxies.

The determination of the stellar parameters of M dwarfs is of prime importance in the fields of galactic, stellar and planetary astronomy. M stars are the least studied galactic component regarding their fundamental parameters. Yet, they are the most numerous stars in the galaxy and contribute to most of its total (baryonic) mass. In particular, we are interested in their metallicity in order to study the star-planet connection and to refine the planetary parameters. As a preliminary result we present a test of the metallicity calibrations of Bonfils et al. (2005), Johnson & Apps (2009), and Schlaufman & Laughlin (2010) using a new sample of 17 binaries with precise V band photometry.

We combine photometric data from field stars, plus over a dozen open clusters and associations, to explore how the maximum photometric amplitude (Amax) and the distribution of amplitudes varies with stellar properties. We find a complex variation of Amax with inverse Rossby number Ro−1, which nevertheless can be modeled well with a simple model including an increase in Amax with rotation for low Ro−1, and a maximum level. Amax may then be further affected by differential rotation and a decline at the highest Ro−1. The distribution of Aspot below Amax varies with Ro−1 : it peaks at low Aspot with a long tail towards Amax for low Ro−1, but is more uniformly distributed at higher Ro−1. We investigate further dependences of the Aspot distributions on stellar properties, and speculate on the source of these variations.

Searches for planets around giants represent an essential complement to ’traditional’ surveys, because they furnish information about properties of planetary systems around stars that are the descendants of the A-F main sequence (MS) stars with masses as high as ~5 M⊙. As the stars evolve off the MS, their effective temperatures and rotation rates decrease to the point that their radial velocity variations can be measured with a few ms−1 precision. This offers an excellent opportunity to improve our understanding of the population of planets around stars that are significantly more massive than the Sun, without which it would be difficult to produce abroad, integrated picture of planet formation and evolution. Since 2001, about 30 such objects have been identified, including our five published HET detections (Niedzielski et al. 2007; Niedzielski et al. 2009a; Niedzielski et al. 2009b). Our work has produced the tightest orbit of a planet orbiting a K-giant identified so far (0.6 AU), and the first convincing evidence for a multiplanet system around such as star (Niedzielski et al. 2009a). Our most recent discoveries (Niedzielski et al. 2009b) have identified new multiplanet systems, including a very intriguing one of two brown dwarf-mass bodies orbiting a 2.8M⊙, K2 giant. This particular detection challenges the standard interpretation of the so-called brown dwarf desert known to exist in the case of solar-mass stars. Along with discoveries supplied by other groups, our work has substantially added to the emerging evidence that stellar mass positively correlates with masses of substellar companions, all the way from red dwarfs to intermediate-mass stars. We present current status and forthcoming results from the Pennsylvania-Toruń Search for Planets performed with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) since 2004.

The formation of low mass stars takes place with the assistance of an accretion disk that transports gas and dust from the envelope of the system to the star, and a jet that removes angular momentum and allows accretion to proceed. In the radio, these ionized jets can be studied very close to the star via the thermal (free-free) emission they produce and at larger scales by the molecular outflows that result from their interaction with the surrounding medium. Is the same disk-jet process responsible for the formation of massive stars? I will review recent evidence for the presence of collimated jets and accretion disks in association with forming massive stars. The jets in massive protostars have large velocities that could produce a synchrotron component and I discuss the evidence for the presence of this non-thermal process in the jet associated with the HH 80-81 system.

Numerical aspects of dynamos in periodic domains are discussed. Modifications of the solutions by numerically motivated alterations of the equations are being reviewed using the examples of magnetic hyperdiffusion and artificial diffusion when advancing the magnetic field in its Euler potential representation. The importance of using integral kernel formulations in mean-field dynamo theory is emphasized in cases where the dynamo growth rate becomes comparable with the inverse turnover time. Finally, the significance of microscopic magnetic Prandtl number in controlling the conversion from kinetic to magnetic energy is highlighted.

During the LBV phase—a short transitional phase of only the very massive stars—strong stellar winds sometimes accompanied by eruptions form small circumstellar LBV nebulae around a substantial number of LBV stars. Analyzing the morphology and and kinematics of the LBV nebulae even weakly bipolar components can be detected, leading to the conclusion that about 50% have—to some degree—a bipolar structure. A global overview of our current observational knowledge of LBV nebulae is summarized, including their morphology, sizes and kinematic parameters.

We have undertaken an observational program to photometrically monitor several transiting planet host stars. The Rabus et al. result for TrES-1 showed the dramatic effects star spots can have on transit photometry. We will investigate the effects of spots on transit light curves and estimates of planetary radii. The observed spot patterns will be used to derive the rotational periods of our sample. Our sample includes several of the newly discovered transiting ESPs from the SuperWASP, HAT, TrES, and Kepler projects.

The key characteristics of molecular and atomic ejection from young stars are summarized, with emphasis on similarities across evolutionary stages, and the need for efficient magnetic collimation and ejection extracting a large fraction of the accretion power. The jet kinematics, and its dust and molecular content, are confronted to steady MHD jet models, and the probable contribution of non-steady processes is pointed out.

This session dealt with the circumstellar gas surrounding active OB stars, and the discussion broadly focused on disks, wind morphology and structures, X-ray emission, and mass loss rates.
