Interpretation of current and future data calls for a continuous improvement in the theoretical modeling of CMB spectrum. We describe the new version of a numerical code, KYPRIX, specifically written to solve the Kompaneets equation in a cosmological context under general assumptions. We report on the equation formalism, and structure and computational aspects of the code. New physical options have been introduced in the current code version: the cosmological constant in the terms controlling the general expansion of the Universe, the relevant chemical abundances, and the ionization history, from recombination to cosmological reionization. We present some of fundamental tests we carried out to verify the accuracy, reliability, and performance of the code. All the tests demonstrate the reliability and versatility of the new code version and its accuracy and applicability to the scientific analysis of current CMB spectrum data and of much more precise measurements that will be available in the future.

We have derived the latitude motions of sunspots classified into three area categories using the measures of positions and areas of their umbrae from the white – light images of the Sun for the period 1906 – 1987 from the Kodaikanal Observatory archives. The latitude motions are directed equator – ward in all the three area classes. We interpret that these equator – ward latitude motions reflect the meridional flows at the three depths in the convection zone where the magnetic flux loops of the spots of the three area classes are anchored. We obtain estimates of the anchor depths through a comparison of the rotation rates of the spots in each area class with the rotation rate profiles from helioseismic inversions. The equator – ward flows measured by us thus provide evidence of the return meridional flows in the convection zone as required in the flux transport solar dynamo models. We have done an identical analysis using a similar data set derived from the photoheliogram collections of the Mt.Wilson Observatory for the period 1917 – 1985. There is good agreement between the results from the data sets of the two observatories.

Four new transit light curves of XO-2b obtained in 2008 and 2009, are analyzed by using MCMC algorithm, and the system parameters are derived. The result demonstrates that the orbital period of the system obtained from new observations is almost the same as Burke et al.'s one (2007), which does not confirm the result of Fernandez et al. (2009).

In this paper we investigate the quasi periodic oscillation (QPO) behavior of the black hole candidate GX 339-4 during its 2010 outburst using RXTE/PCA data. We perform spectral and timing analysis of the observations, where the QPOs are observed. We analyze the relationship between the centroid frequency of QPO and the spectral parameters. The correlation of spectral and timing properties can be used to estimate the mass of black hole with the scaling method. Using this method we estimate a mass of 7.5 ± 0.8 M⊙ of GX 339-4.

Cosmological Adaptive Mesh Refinement simulations are used to study the specific star formation rate (sSFR=SSF/Ms) history and the stellar mass fraction, fs=Ms/MT, of small galaxies, total masses MT between few × 1010 M⊙ to few ×1011 M⊙. Our results are compared with recent observational inferences that show the so-called “downsizing in sSFR” phenomenon: the less massive the galaxy, the higher on average is its sSFR, a trend seen at least since z ~ 1. The simulations are not able to reproduce this phenomenon, in particular the high inferred values of sSFR, as well as the low values of fs constrained from observations. The effects of resolution and sub-grid physics on the SFR and fs of galaxies are discussed.

Photometric searches for Be stars in environments with different metallicities have led to the discovery of many Be-like star variables. The knowledge of these types of variables is still fragmentary. This work presents the preliminary results of analyzing FLAMES+GIRAFFE spectra of a sample of these Be-like stars that we have found in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC).

MHD Turbulence is a critical component of the current paradigms of star formation, particle transport, magnetic reconnection and evolution of the ISM, to name just a few. Progress on this difficult subject is made via numerical simulations and observational studies, however in order to connect these two, statistical methods are required. This calls for new statistical tools to be developed in order to study turbulence in the interstellar medium. Here we briefly review some of the recently developed statistics that focus on characterizing gas compressibility and magnetization and their uses to interstellar studies.

We present a detailed analysis of all the X-ray data taken by the XMM-Newton satellite of a small sample of five Seyfert 1 galaxies: ESO 359-G19, HE 1143-1810, CTS A08.12, Mkn 110, and UGC 11763. Our aim is to characterize the different components of the material that print the absorption and emission features in the X-ray spectra of these objects. The continuum emission was studied through the EPIC spectra taking advantage of the spectral range of these cameras. The high resolution RGS spectra were analyzed in order to characterize the absorbing features and the emission line features that arise in the spectra of these sources.

Star formation is regulated through a variety of feedback processes. In this study, we treat feedback by metal injection and a UV background as well as by X-ray irradiation. Our aim is to investigate whether star formation is significantly affected when the ISM of a proto-galaxxy enjoys different metallicities and when a star forming cloud resides in the vicinity of a strong X-ray source. We perform cosmological Enzo simulations with a detailed treatment of non-zero metallicity chemistry and thermal balance. We also perform FLASH simulations with embedded Lagrangian sink particles of a collapsing molecular cloud near a massive, 107 M⊙, black hole that produces X-ray radiation.

We find that a multi-phase ISM forms for metallicites as small as 10−4 Solar at z = 6, with higher (10−2Z⊙) metallicities supporting a cold (<100 K) and dense (>103 cm−3) phase at higher (z = 20) redshift. A star formation recipe based on the presence of a cold dense phase leads to a self-regulating mode in the presence of supernova and radiation feedback. We also find that when there is strong X-ray feedback a collapsing cloud fragments into larger clumps whereby fewer but more massive protostellar cores are formed. This is a consequence of the higher Jeans mass in the warm (50 K, due to ionization heating) molecular gas. Accretion processes dominate the mass function and a near-flat, non-Salpeter IMF results.

We calculate the simultaneous in situ formation of Jupiter and Saturn by the core instability mechanism considering the oligarchic growth regime for the accretion of planetesimals. We consider a density distribution for the size of planetesimals and planetesimals migration. The planets are immersed in a realistic protoplanetary disk that evolves with time. We find that, within the classical model of solar nebula, the isolated formation of Jupiter and Saturn undergoes significant change when it occurs simultaneously.

We present the IACOB spectroscopic database, the largest homogeneous database of high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra of Northern Galactic OB-type stars compiled up to date. The spectra were obtained with the FIES spectrograph attached to the Nordic Optical Telescope. We briefly summarize the main characeristics and present status of the IACOB, first scientific results, and some future plans for its extension and scientific exploitation.

Density fluctuations in a torsional quiescent prominence were studied with Solar Optical Telescope on board of Hinode satellite. Continuous observations were made in Ca II H line from ~15:00 UT May 03, 2008; the observational duration was ~1 hr with a cadence time ~ 30s. The emission intensity along the prominence axis as functions of altitudes and time shows fluctuations in brightness with local peaks in Fourier power spectra, indicating the presence of periods and intervallic displacements to be 3 ~ 11 min and 2 ~ 7 Mm respectively and statistically significant peaks at 368 ± 63s & 620 ± 41 s, and 3.3 ± 0.6 Mm regime. The distance is the line of sight projection. These intensity disturbances may perhaps be caused by density fluctuations originated from compressional waves in which the possible origin could be the combinations of p-mode oscillations induced at the surface and twisting of the flux tube.

In the Galaxy there are 67 Be X-ray binaries known to-date. Out of those, 45 host a neutron star, and for the reminder the nature of a companion is not known. None, so far, is known to host a black hole. This disparity is referred to as a missing Be – black hole X-ray binary problem. The stellar population synthesis calculations following the formation of Be X-ray binaries (Belczyński & Ziółkowski 2009) predict that the ratio of the binaries with neutron stars to the ones with black holes is rather high FNS/BH ~ 30–50. A comparison of this ratio with the number of confirmed Be – neutron star X-ray binaries (45) indicates that the expected number of Be – black hole X-ray binaries is of the order of only ~0–2. This is entirely consistent with the observed Galactic sample. Therefore, there is no problem of the missing Be+BH X-Ray Binaries for the Galaxy

In the Magellanic Clouds there are 94 Be X-ray binaries known to-date. Out of those, 60 host a neutron star. Again, none hosts a black hole. The stellar population synthesis calculations carried out specifically for the Magellanic Clouds (Ziółkowski & Belczyński 2010) predict that the ratio of the Be X-ray binaries with neutron stars to the ones with black holes is only FNS/BH ~ 10. This value is rather too low, as it implies the expected number of Be+BH X-ray binaries of the order of ~6, while none is observed. We found, that to remove the discrepancy, one has to take into account a different history of the star formation rate in the Magellanic Clouds, with the respect to the Galaxy. New stellar population synthesis calculations are currently being carried out.

In this review I will present recent results obtained between 2005, which was the last “Be-stars” meeting in Sapporo, and 2010, on the observations of circumstellar disks around active hot stars.

From radiation magnetohydrodynamic (RMHD) simulations we track the temporal evolution of a vertical magnetic flux sheet embedded in a two-dimensional non-stationary atmosphere that reaches all the way from the upper convection zone to the low chromosphere. Examining its temporal behavior near the interface between the convection zone and the photosphere, we describe the excitation of propagating longitudinal waves within the magnetic element as a result of convective motion in its surroundings.

A spherical hydrodynamical expansion flow can be described as the gradient of a potential. In that case no vorticity should be produced, but several additional mechanisms can drive its production. Here we analyze the effects of baroclinicity, rotation and shear in the case of a viscous fluid. Those flows resemble what happens in the interstellar medium. In fact in this astrophysical environment supernovae explosion are the dominant flows and, in a first approximation, they can be seen as spherical. One of the main difference is that in our numerical study we examine only weakly supersonic flows, while supernovae explosions are strongly supersonic.

We present here and overview of the results of a systematic search of Type-I X-ray bursts in the light curves of the transient, atoll system 4U 1608–522 as seen by JEMX onboard INTEGRAL.

Planetary migration provides a theoretical basis for the observed diversity of exoplanetary systems. We demonstrate that dust settling - an inescapable feature of disk evolution - gives even more rapid type I migration by up to a factor of about 2 than occurs in disks with fully mixed dust. On the other hand, type II migration becomes slower by a factor of 2 due to dust settling. This even more problematic type I migration can be resolved by the presence of a dead zone; the inner, high density region of a disk which features a low level of turbulence. We show that enhanced dust settling in the dead zone leaves a dusty wall at its outer edge. Back-heating of the dead zone by this wall produces a positive radial gradient for the disk temperature, which acts as a barrier for type I migration.

We review an approach to observation-theory comparisons we call “Taste-Testing.” In this approach, synthetic observations are made of numerical simulations, and then both real and synthetic observations are “tasted” (compared) using a variety of statistical tests. We first lay out arguments for bringing theory to observational space rather than observations to theory space. Next, we explain that generating synthetic observations is only a step along the way to the quantitative, statistical, taste tests that offer the most insight. We offer a set of examples focused on polarimetry, scattering and emission by dust, and spectral-line mapping in star-forming regions. We conclude with a discussion of the connection between statistical tests used to date and the physics we seek to understand. In particular, we suggest that the “lognormal” nature of molecular clouds can be created by the interaction of many random processes, as can the lognormal nature of the IMF, so that the fact that both the “Clump Mass Function” (CMF) and IMF appear lognormal does not necessarily imply a direct relationship between them.

The evolution and amplification of large-scale magnetic fields in galaxies is investigated by means of high resolution simulations of interacting galaxies. The goal of our project is to consider in detail the role of gravitational interaction of galaxies for the fate of magnetic fields. Since the tidal interaction up to galaxy merging is a basic ingredient of cold-dark matter (CDM) structure formation models we think that our simulations will give important clues for the interplay of galactic dynamics and magnetic fields.
