We build a sample of O VI absorption systems in the redshift range 2.0 $\lesssim z \lesssim$ 2.6 using high spectral resolution data of ten quasars from the VLT-UVES Large Programme. We investigate the existence of a metal-rich O VI population and define observational criteria for this class of absorbers under the assumption of photoionisation. The low temperatures of nearly half of all O VI absorbers, implied by their line widths, are too low for collisional ionisation to be a dominant process. We estimate the oxygen abundance under the assumption of photoionisation; a striking result is the bimodal distribution of [O/H] with median values close to 0.01 and 0.5 Solar for the metal-poor and metal-rich populations, respectively. Using the line widths to fix the temperature or assuming a constant, low gas density does not drastically change the metallicities of the metal-rich population. We present the first estimate of the O VI column density distribution. Assuming a single power-law distribution, $f$(N) $\propto$ N$^{-\alpha}$, yields $\alpha \sim 1.7$ and a normalisation of $f$(N) $=2.3\times 10^{-13}$ at log N(O VI) $\sim$ 13.5, both with a $\sim$30% uncertainty. The value of $\alpha$ is similar to that found for C IV surveys, whereas the normalisation factor is about ten times higher. We use $f$(N) to derive the number density per unit $z$ and cosmic density $\Omega_{\rm b}$(O VI), selecting a limited column density range not strongly affected by incompleteness or sample variance. Comparing our results with those obtained at $z\sim0.1$ for a similar range of column densities implies some decline of $dn/dz$ with $z$. The cosmic O VI density derived from $f$(N), $\Omega_{\rm b}$(O VI)$\approx (3.5\pm ^{3.2}_{0.9}) \times 10^{-7}$, is 2.3 times higher than the value estimated using the observed O VI sample (of which the metal-rich population contributes $\sim$35%), easing the problem of missing metals at high $z$ ($\sim$ 1/4 of the produced metals) but not solving it. We find that the majority of the metal-rich absorbers are located within $\sim$ 450 km s$^{-1}$ of strong Ly-$\alpha$ lines and show that, contrary to the metal-poor absorbers, this population cannot be in hydrostatic equilibrium. All of the O VI absorber properties imply that there are two distinct populations: metal-poor absorbers tracing the intergalactic medium and metal-rich absorbers associated with active sites of star formation and most probably linked to galactic winds.

The cosmic baryon budget is revisited using modern observations that have become available since our first publication. I also present an estimate for the heavy element abundance. An increased accuracy in the accounting of the baryon budget reveals ‘missing baryons’, which amount to ≈ 35% of the total. This would provide an interesting test for models of the cosmic structure formation.

We discuss the observed multiplicity of massive stars and implications on theories of massive star formation. After a short summary of the literature on massive star multiplicity, we focus on the O-and B-type stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster, which constitute a homogenous sample of very young massive stars. 13 of these stars have recently been the targets of a bispectrum speckle interferometry survey for companions. Considering the visual and also the known spectroscopic companions of these stars, the total number of companions is at least 14. Extrapolation with correction for the unresolved systems suggests that there are at least 1.5 and perhaps as much as 4 companions per primary star on average. This number is clearly higher than the mean number of ∼ 0.5 companions per primary star found for the low-mass stars in the general field population and also in the Orion Nebula cluster. This suggests that a different mechanism is at work in the formation of high-mass multiple systems in the dense Orion Nebula cluster than for low-mass stars.

I review the possible formation mechanisms of close binary stars. The formation of close binary systems is problematic in that there is no theory that does not encounter significant difficulties or unknowns. Fission does not appear to occur in stars. Capture is unlikely to form many close binary systems except possibly amongst massive stars. Fragmentation can form close binary systems but these need to accrete the majority of their eventual mass. Furthermore, there appears to be a limited window in initial conditions that may preclude forming sufficient systems in this way. Possible alternatives include the orbital migration of a binary due to its circumbinary disk and the disintegration of a non-hierarchical multiple system.

Dynamical, vibrational, and thermal instabilities of massive blue stars are discussed as possible mechanisms for the observed brightness variations of such objects. Relaxation oscillations (on local thermal time scales) due to dynamical instabilities of the stellar wind flows appear to be the most likely mechanism, at least for the S Dor variables. Very massive main-sequence stars with M > 103 M⊙ should be violently vibrationally unstable and therefore should differ significantly from stable main-sequence stars of lower mass.

This paper reviews various hydrodynamical models proposed for explaining bipolar molecular outflows from young stars. The different possibilities discussed are : wind-driven molecular shells, steady state filled flows, and jet-driven bow shocks. Particular emphasis is placed on comparisons between model predictions and observations of molecular flows. While it appears that jet-driven bow shocks are at the present time the most popular mechanism for explaining molecular outflows, other models have interesting characteristics that might be relevant for at least some objects.

We describe an ongoing project to migrate the emission-line analysis package nebular from its current environment, IRAF, to a modern programming environment where it can be used from command line, a local GUI, or the web. We are also updating the supporting atomic data where they have been superseded by superior calculations or measurements.

Proper characterization of the host star to a planet is a key element to the understanding of its overall properties. The star has a direct impact through the modification of the structure and evolution of the planet atmosphere by being the overwhelmingly larger source of energy. The star plays a central role in shaping the structure, evolution, and even determining the mere existence of planetary atmospheres. The vast majority of the stellar flux is well understood thanks to the impressive progress made in the modeling of stellar atmospheres. At short wavelengths (X-rays to UV), however, the information is scarcer since the stellar emission does not originate in the photosphere but in the chromospheric and coronal regions, which are much less understood. The same can be said about particle emissions, with a strong impact on planetary atmospheres, because a detailed description of the time-evolution of stellar wind is still lacking. Here we review our current understanding of the flux and particle emissions of the Sun and low-mass stars and briefly address their impact in the context of planetary atmospheres.

Circumstellar discs of Be stars are thought to be formed from material ejected from a fast-spinning central star. This material possesses large amounts of angular momentum and settles in a quasi-Keplerian orbit around the star. This simple description outlines the basic issues that a successful disc theory must address: 1) What is the mechanism responsible for the mass ejection? 2) What is the final configuration of the material? 3) How the disc grows? With the very high angular resolution that can be achieved with modern interferometers operating in the optical and infrared we can now resolve the photosphere and immediate vicinity of nearby Be stars. Those observations are able to provide very stringent tests for our ideas about the physical processes operating in those objects. This paper discusses the basic hydrodynamics of viscous decretion discs around Be stars. The model predictions are quantitatively compared to observations, demonstrating that the viscous decretion scenario is currently the most viable theory to explain the discs around Be stars.

We present a new 3D MHD code for the simulation of solar magnetoconvection. The code is designed for use on parallel computers and in the choice of methods emphasis has been laid on efficient parallelization. We give a description of the numerical methods and discuss the non-local and non-grey treatment of the radiative transfer. Test calculations underlining the importance of non-grey effects and first results of the simulation of a solar plage region are shown.

The MeerKAT (64 x 13.5m dish radio interferometer) is South Africa's precursor instrument for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), exploring dish design, instrumentation, and the characteristics of a Karoo desert site and is projected to be on sky in 2016. One of two top-priority, Key Projects is a single deep field, integrating for 5000 hours total with the aim to detect neutral atomic hydrogen through its 21 cm line emission out to redshift unity and beyond. This first truly deep HI survey will help constrain fueling models for galaxy assembly and evolution. It will measure the evolution of the cosmic neutral gas density and its distribution over galaxies over cosmic time, explore evolution of the gas in galaxies, measure the Tully-Fisher relation, measure OH maser counts, and address many more topics. Here we present the observing strategy and envisaged science case for this unique deep field, which encompasses the Chandra Deep Field-South (and the footprints of GOODS, GEMS and several other surveys) to produce a singular legacy multi-wavelength data-set.

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is a global project to design and construct the next-generation international radio telescope operating at metre to cm wavelengths. The SKA will be an interferometric array with a collecting area of up to one million square metres and maximum baseline of at least 3000 km, and is designed to address fundamental questions in cosmology, physics and astronomy. The key science goals range from the epoch of re-ionization, dark energy, the formation and evolution of galaxies and large-scale structure, the origin and evolution of cosmic magnetism, strong-field tests of gravity and detection of gravity waves.

The SKA project is now entering a final design for an SKA Observatory to begin to be built in the latter half of this decade that will include facilities in South Africa and Western Australia. The SKA design relies on advances in several technologies that will be prototyped over the next few years, and demonstrated for astronomical observations on SKA precursor telescopes. Scientific operations of the first 10% scale phase of the SKA is targeted for 2020.

Scales of fundamental bolometric connections (B.C.) and effective temperatures (Teff) as a function of spectral type or color are necessary for the comparison of observations and theory in the HR diagram.

Star formation in the Galactic disc is primarily controlled by gravity, turbulence, and magnetic fields. It is not clear that this also applies to star formation near the Galactic Centre. Here we determine the turbulence and star formation in the CMZ cloud G0.253+0.016. Using maps of 3 mm dust emission and HNCO intensity-weighted velocity obtained with ALMA, we measure the volume-density variance σρ /ρ 0=1.3±0.5 and turbulent Mach number $\mathcal{M}$ = 11±3. Combining these with turbulence simulations to constrain the plasma β = 0.34±0.35, we reconstruct the turbulence driving parameter b=0.22±0.12 in G0.253+0.016. This low value of b indicates solenoidal (divergence-free) driving of the turbulence in G0.253+0.016. By contrast, typical clouds in the Milky Way disc and spiral arms have a significant compressive (curl-free) driving component (b > 0.4). We speculate that shear causes the solenoidal driving in G0.253+0.016 and show that this may reduce the star formation rate by a factor of 7 compared to nearby clouds.

The Sun is unique amongst stars in having a precisely determined age which does not depend on the modelling of stellar evolution. Furthermore, other global properties of the Sun are known to much higher accuracy than for any other star. Also, helioseismology has provided detailed determination of the solar internal structure and rotation. As a result, the Sun plays a central role in the development and test of stellar modelling. Here I discuss solar modelling and its application to tests of asteroseismic techniques for stellar age determination.

The fragile light elements lithium, beryllium, and boron (Li, Be, B) are easily destroyed in stellar interiors, and are thus superb probes of physical processes occuring in the outer stellar layers. The light elements are also excellent tracers of the chemical evolution of the Galaxy, and can test big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). These inter-related topics are reviewed with an emphasis on stellar physics.

In Part I (presented by CPD), an overview is given of the physical processes which can modify the surface abundances of the light elements, with emphasis on Population I dwarfs - convection; gravitational settling, thermal diffusion, and radiative levitation; slow mixing induced by gravity waves or rotation. We will discuss the increasingly large body of data which begin to enable us to discern the relative importance of these mechanisms in Population I main sequence stars. In Part II (presented by MHP), discussion is extended to the issue of whether or not the halo Li plateau is depleted, and includes the following topics: Li dispersion in field and globular cluster stars, Li production vs. destruction in Li-rich halo stars, and constraints from 6Li. Also discussed are trends with metal abundance and Teff and implications for chemical evolution and BBN. In Part III (presented by CC), evidence is reviewed that suggests that in situ mixing occurs in evolved low mass Population I and Population II stars. Theoretical mechanisms that can create such mixing are discussed, as well as their implications in stellar yields.

Previous timing data for PSR B1620–26 were consistent with a second companion mass m2 anywhere in the range ∼ 10−3 – 1M⊙, i.e., from a Jupiter-type planet to a star. We present the latest timing parameters for the system, including a significant change in the projected semi-major axis of the inner binary, a marginal detection of the fourth time derivative of the pulse frequency, and the pulsar proper motion (which is in agreement with published values for the proper motion of M4), and use them to further constrain the mass m2 and the orbital parameters. Using the observed value of , we obtain a one-parameter family of solutions, all with m2 ≲ 10−2 M⊙, i.e., excluding stellar masses. Varying within its formal 1σ error bar does not affect the mass range significantly. However, if we vary within a 4σ error bar, we find that stellar-mass solutions are still possible. We also calculate the predicted rate of change of the projected semi-major axis of the inner binary and show that it agrees with the measured value.

Until recently, the detection of magnetic fields at the surface of intermediate-mass main-sequence stars has been limited to Ap/Bp stars, a class of chemically peculiar stars. This class represents no more than 5-10% of the stars in this mass range. This small fraction is not explained by the fossil field paradigm that describes the Ap/Bp type magnetism as a remnant of an early phase of the star-life. Also, the limitation of the field measurements to a small and special group of stars is obviously a problem to study the effect of the magnetic fields on the stellar evolution of a typical intermediate-mass star.

Thanks to the improved sensitivity of a new generation of spectropolarimeters, a lower bound to the magnetic fields of Ap/Bp stars, a two orders of magnitude desert in the longitudinal magnetic field and a new type of sub-gauss magnetism first discovered on Vega have been identified. These advances provide new clues to understand the origin of intermediate-mass magnetism as well as its influence on stellar evolution. In particular, a scenario has been proposed whereby the magnetic dichotomy between Ap/Bp and Vega-like magnetism originate from the bifurcation between stable and unstable large scale magnetic configurations in differentially rotating stars. In this paper, we review these recent observational findings and discuss this scenario.

The object SS433 is a well-known source of relativistic jets, which are formed in supercritical accretion disk. It is very probable that the disk has polar channels and their radiation is collimated (the photo-cones). A face-on SS433 object can appear as ultra-bright and highly variable X-ray source, Lx ˜ 1040 − 1042 erg/s. We discuss the properties of these hypothetical objects and their frequency expected in galaxies. We describe a search for such objects using the ROSAT All Sky Survey and RC3 catalog of galaxies. Among the total 418 positive correlations we find that 142 sources in S and Irr galaxies are unknown as AGNs. Nuclear sources among them still contain many AGNs. Non-nuclear (offset) sources are rather hard, their X-ray luminosities are 1039 − 1041 erg/s. Their observed frequency is about 4–5% per galaxy, that is in agreement with expected frequency of the face-on SS 433 stars. The only way to recognize such stars is their expected violent variability in X rays.

Since the “Catalogue of Galactic Planetary Nebulae” 226 new objects have been classified as planetary nebulae. They are summarized in Table 1 which gives the designations, names, coordinates and the references to the discovery. Further 9 new objects have been added to Table 1 and called 1proto-planetary nebulae1, but their status is still uncertain. Only 34 objects have been included in the present list of misclassified planetary nebulae (Table 2) although the number of doubtful cases is much larger.
