The object SS433 is a well-known source of relativistic jets, which are formed in supercritical accretion disk. It is very probable that the disk has polar channels and their radiation is collimated (the photo-cones). A face-on SS433 object can appear as ultra-bright and highly variable X-ray source, Lx ˜ 1040 − 1042 erg/s. We discuss the properties of these hypothetical objects and their frequency expected in galaxies. We describe a search for such objects using the ROSAT All Sky Survey and RC3 catalog of galaxies. Among the total 418 positive correlations we find that 142 sources in S and Irr galaxies are unknown as AGNs. Nuclear sources among them still contain many AGNs. Non-nuclear (offset) sources are rather hard, their X-ray luminosities are 1039 − 1041 erg/s. Their observed frequency is about 4–5% per galaxy, that is in agreement with expected frequency of the face-on SS 433 stars. The only way to recognize such stars is their expected violent variability in X rays.

The analysis of an 11-hour series of high resolution white light observations of a large pore in the sunspot group NOAA 7519, observed on 5 June 1993 with the Swedish Vacuum Solar Telescope at La Palma on Canary Islands, has been recently described by Dorotovič et al. (2002). Special attention was paid to the evolution of a filamentary region attached to the pore, to horizontal motions around the pore, and to small-scale morphological changes. One of the results, relevant to out work here, was the determination of temporal area evolution of the studied pore where the area itself showed a linear trend of decrease with time at an average rate of −0.23 Mm2h−1 during the entire observing period. Analysing the time series of the are of the pore, there is strong evidence that coupling between the solar interior and magnetic atmosphere can occur at various scales and that the referred decrease of the area may be connected with a decrease of the magnetic field strength according to the magnetic field-to-size relation. Periods of global acoustic, e.g. p-mode, driven waves are usually in the range of 5–10 minutes, and are favourite candidates for the coupling of interior oscillations with atmospheric dynamics. However, by assuming that magneto-acoustic gravity waves may be there too, and may act as drivers, the observed periodicities (frequencies) are expected to be much longer (smaller), falling well within the mMHz domain. In this work we determine typical periods of such range in the area evolution of the pore using wavelet analysis. The resulted periods are in the range of 20–70 minutes, suggesting that periodic elements of the temporal evolution of the area of this studied pore could be linked to, and considered as, observational evidence of linear low-frequency slow sausage (magneto-acoustic gravity) waves in magnetic pores. This would give us further evidence on the coupling of global solar oscillations to the overlaying magnetic atmosphere.

Massive stars like company. Here, we provide a brief overview of progresses made over the last 5 years by a number of medium and large surveys. These results provide new insights on the observed and intrinsic multiplicity properties of main sequence massive stars and on the initial conditions for their future evolution. They also bring new interesting constraints on the outcome of the massive star formation process.

Recent observation with ASCA reveals that radio pulsars own X-ray diffuse nebulae around them. 11 such nebulae have been reported (Harrus, Hughes & Helfand 1996, Shibata et al. 1997, Kawai, Tamura & Shibata 1997). It is most likely that these nebulae are synchrotron nebuale powered by the pulsar wind, the outflow of relativistic particles. Kawai, Tamura and Shibata (1997) reduced an empirical law for the nebula luminosity Lx as a function of the rotation power Ėrot of the central pulsar: Lx/Ėrot = −12.3 + 0.27 log Ėrot.

Some theoretical problems associated with the presence of large-scale magnetic fields in A stars are reviewed. Possible implications of some recent theoretical and observational results are discussed, with particular attention to the survival of fields from the ISM and their long-term stability. Recent observational and theoretical studies of dust in dense clouds are reviewed with an emphasis on the growth of dust grains through accretion and coagulation. IR reflection nebulae around protostellar objects are useful probes of grain sizes in dense clouds. For example, detailed studies of the IR reflection nebula surrounding OMC 2-IRS 1 show that the (scattering) grains are much larger (Ã 5000 å) than in the diffuse interstellar medium. Likewise, the presence of a weak shoulder at 2.95 μm on the 3.08 μm feature in BN indicates the importance of scattering by icy grains and implies a very similar increase in the grain size.

Theoretical studies of grain surface chemistry predict the possible presence of three distinctly different grain mantle components in dense clouds depending on the physical conditions in the gas phase. These are: 1) A hydrogenated mantle dominated by H2O and CH3OH; 2) An inert grain mantle dominated by CO and O2; and 3) An oxidized grain mantle dominated by CO2. Although the importance of H2O dominated grain mantles was known for 10 yrs, the presence of CH3OH was only recently confirmed. Furthermore, recent studies of the solid CO band have revealed the presence of at least two distinctly different interstellar grain mantle components along the line of sights towards most stars: One dominated by polar and one by non-polar molecules. Although specific identification of the molecules mixed in with the CO in these components is difficult, it is quite possible that the former component is dominated by H2O and the latter by CO itself, as suggested by theoretical models. Finally, the photochemical evolution of icy grain mantles is briefly reviewed and it is suggested that the resulting complex molecular mantles may evolve into amorphous carbon mantles in the diffuse ISM.

Grain-grain collisions can lead to large modifications of the interstellar grain size distribution. At high velocities (v ≳ 1 kms−1) shattering into many small fragments will be important, while at low velocities (v ≲ 10 ms−1) coagulation dominates. Both processes can play a role in dense molecular clouds. The sticking of grains at low velocities is discussed in some detail and it is concluded that coagulation in molecular clouds is only important if the colliding grains are covered by icy grain mantles.

Thus, a model for interstellar dust is proposed in which small (≲ 500 å) silicate and carbonaceous grains are “glued” together in large (Ã 3000å), open conglomerates by a polymerized, all enveloping grain mantle. This structure resembles that of certain interplanetary dust particles collected in the upper stratosphere.

The idea that stars are formed by gravity goes back more than 300 years to Newton, and the idea that gravitational instability plays a role goes back more than 100 years to Jeans, but the idea that stars are forming at the present time in the interstellar medium is more recent and did not emerge until the energy source of stars had been identified and it was realized that the most luminous stars have short lifetimes and therefore must have formed recently. The first suggestion that stars may be forming now in the interstellar medium was credited by contemporary authors to a paper by Spitzer in 1941 in which he talks about the formation of interstellar condensations by radiation pressure, but then oddly says nothing about star formation. That may be because, as Spitzer later told me, when he first suggested very tentatively in a paper submitted to The Astrophysical Journal that stars might be forming now from interstellar matter, this was considered a radical idea and the referee said it was much too speculative and should be taken out of the paper. So Spitzer removed the speculation about star formation from the published version of his paper.

10Be has been measured in a 300 m long ice core from Greenland. After a general analysis of the 10Be data the potential and the limitations of 10Be records in ice to reconstruct solar variability are discussed. Special emphasis is given to periods of low solar activity (Maunder Minimum etc.). The ‘clock problem’ is addressed, also the question whether the Schwabe cycle maintains its phase. Finally the question of what 10Be can tell us about changes of the solar irradiance in the past is explored.

During periods of good image quality the large-scale films of the Lockheed Solar Observatory obtained during 1966 and 1967 have proven to be especially useful for studying filaments and their relationship to the Hα fine structure observed in active regions. Structures with dimensions on the order of 1 sec of arc can frequently be resolved, as illustrated in Figure 1. The ‘solar vortices’ are clearly resolved into numerous individual fibrils. Bright Hα plage is resolved into a fine granular structure resembling the solar granulation. Filaments are usually seen as irregular dense collections of material which are occasionally resolved into finer striations which run parallel to the path of the filaments.

The formation of massive stars is one of the major unsolved problems in stellar astrophysics. However, only few if any of these are found as single stars, on average massive stars have more than one companion. Many of them are born in dense stellar clusters and several clusters have an excess of massive short-period spectroscopic binaries, with severe implication for binary-related stellar evolution including mergers, and also for the origin of massive runaway stars. The multiplicity of massive stars seems to increase with increasing primary mass and with increasing density of young star clusters. These observations suggest that massive binary and multiple systems originate mainly from dynamical gravitational interactions and accretion-induced protostellar collisions in dense clusters. If true, the binary properties of massive stars in less dense OB associations should be less extreme. This prediction should be tested by future observations. The paper reviews both the latest observations and theoretical ideas related to the origin of massive binaries. It concludes with a speculation on how the binary properties might change with metallicity (e.g., LMC/SMC).

Systematic photometric monitoring of active RS CVn binaries carried out at Catania with the automatic telescope APT-80, is being complemented with Hα low- and high-resolution spectroscopy. The relationship between photospheric and chromospheric activity is investigated in order to shed light into the complex three-dimensional structure of surface activity. Preliminary results on the photometric and Hα monitoring of the active binaries, UX Ari, RS CVn, BM CVn, HK Lac, IM Peg, V 711 Tau, and EI Eri, are here reported.

The literature concerning spectroscopic studies, abundances, photometry and systematics of Hg-Mn stars is reviewed since the last international meeting on chemically peculiar stars in the Crimea in 1985, and is intended to be complete to the end of 1991.

The studies about the Sun rise a strong interest regarding modifications caused by the solar activity on the Earth. For almost a century in literature was discussed the problem of forecasting and analysis of the space weather, which in his definition covers both the near-earth space and the biospheric affection due to the environmental interaction with the Sun. In particular in the last years increased the attention for magnetospheric response in conjunction with the technological infrastructure and the biosphere itself. This to prevent i.e. spacecraft failures or possible treats to human health. Since the main effect of the activity of the Sun is the solar wind, rises the aim to found a correlation between itself and the localized variations induced on the magnetosphere being the purpose to predict long-term variation of the magnetic field from solar wind time series. As recently proposed for solar wind forecasting, an hybrid approach will be here used than joining the wavelet analysis with the prediction capabilities of recurrent neural networks with an adaptive amplitude activation function algorithm in order to avoid the need to standardize or rescaling the input signal and to match the exact range of the activation function.

I. The large positive and negative velocities in the 21-cm line profiles near the galactic centre have indicated the presence of substantial departures from circular motions in the central parts of the Galaxy. The Leiden astronomers (Oort and Rougoor 1958; Rougoor and Oort 1960) have interpreted these observations in terms of an “expanding arm” at a mean distance of about 3 kpc from the centre. It is not clear how these arms or arcs are related to the regular spiral structure, if the Galaxy is an ordinary spiral similar to M31 as commonly assumed. If, on the other hand, the Galaxy is similar to the SAB(r) or SAB(rs) systems, as suggested by the multiplicity of the spiral pattern discussed in another communication, a different interpretation of the velocity distribution is possible.

The ESA space astrometry mission Gaia, due for launch in early 2012, will in addition to its huge output of fundamental astrometric and astrophysical data also provide stringent tests of general relativity. In this paper we present an updated analysis of Gaia's capacity to measure the PPN parameter γ as part of its core astrometric solution. The analysis is based on small-scale astrometric solutions taking into account the simultaneous determination of stellar astrometric parameters and the satellite attitude. In particular, the statistical correlation between PPN γ and the stellar parallaxes is considered. Extrapolating the results to a full-scale solution using some 100 million stars, we find that PPN γ could be obtained to about 10−6, which is significantly better than today's best estimate from the Cassini mission of 2 × 10−5.

Our proximity and external vantage point make M31 an ideal testbed for understanding the structure of spiral galaxies. The Andromeda Optical and Infrared Disk Survey (ANDROIDS) has mapped M31's bulge and disk out to R=40 kpc in ugriJKs bands with CFHT using a careful sky calibration. We use Bayesian modelling of the optical-infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) to estimate profiles of M31's stellar populations and mass along the major axis. This analysis provides evidence for inside-out disk formation and a declining metallicity gradient. M31's i-band mass-to-light ratio (M/Li*) decreases from 0.5 dex in the bulge to ~ 0.2 dex at 40 kpc. The best-constrained stellar population models use the full ugriJKs SED but are also consistent with optical-only fits. Therefore, while NIR data can be successfully modelled with modern stellar population synthesis, NIR data do not provide additional constraints in this application. Fits to the gi-SED alone yield M/Li* that are systematically lower than the full SED fit by 0.1 dex. This is still smaller than the 0.3 dex scatter amongst different relations for M/Li via g – i colour found in the literature. We advocate a stellar mass of M*(30 kpc) = 10.3+2.3-1.7 × 1010 M⊙ for the M31 bulge and disk.

The theory of planetary accumulation leads quite definitely to the conclusion that the formation of Oort's cometary cloud is the result of ejection of bodies to the outermost parts of the solar system due to encounters with the giant planets during their growth. Uranus and Neptune could have grown to their present dimensions only if the initial mass of solid material in their zones were substantially larger than that of these planets. The relative velocities of the bodies were increased through perturbations by the planetary embryos, and on reaching the escape velocity they would start to be ejected. Our concept of this process differs from that suggested by Öpik by the assumption that Jupiter and Saturn accreted hydrogen, not in solid but in gaseous state, and by the introduction of a more effective mechanism for the interaction with several embryos. In their final stages the embryos ejected amounts of mass an order of magnitude higher than the amounts accreted. Most of the mass was ejected into interstellar space by Jupiter, but the cometary cloud was created mainly by Neptune. The mass of the cloud is estimated to be about three times that of the Earth.

Several advantages of near infrared spectral lines for magnetic field measurements are listed. In particular, the 10830 Å multiplet of HeI is well suited for observations of chromospheric magnetic fields.

New photoelectric spectroheliograms made with the 10830 Å line reveal a large amount of filamentary fine structure in active regions. This fine structure has important consequences on the interpretation of 10830 Å magnetograms. Except for an association of 10830 Å disk filaments with polarity reversals there is little correlation between absorption features and the 10830 Å longitudinal field. Comparisons of chromospheric and photospheric observations show that the chromospheric field is spatially more diffuse and weaker than the photospheric field.

Due to their small radii, M dwarfs are very promising targets to search for transiting super-Earths, with a planet of 2 Earth radii orbiting an M5 dwarf in the habitable zone giving rise to a 0.5% photometric signal, with a period of two weeks. This can be detected from the ground using modest-aperture telescopes by targeting samples of nearby M dwarfs. Such planets would be very amenable to follow-up studies due to the brightness of the parent stars, and the favourable planet-star flux ratio. MEarth is such a transit survey of ~2000 nearby M dwarfs. Since the targets are distributed over the entire (Northern) sky, it is necessary to observe them individually, which will be done by using 8 independent 0.4m robotic telescopes, two of which have been in operation since December 2007 at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory (FLWO) located on Mount Hopkins, Arizona. We discuss the survey design and hardware, and report on the current status of the survey, and preliminary results obtained from the commissioning data.

The Sun is moving in respect to the nearby stars with a velocity of 20 km.s-1 in the direction of the Apex, α = 271° and δ = 30° (celestial coordinates). As the lights of a car illuminate the water droplets when driving in the fog, the Sun illuminates the Hydrogen and helium atoms of the interstellar medium which it travels through. As a result, the sun and the whole solar system are imbedded in a glow of the resonance lines of hydrogen (H Lyman α ; 121.6 nm) and helium (58.4 nm), which have been studied by several space instruments in the last 14 years.

From the intensity distribution of the glow in the solar system, one can derive the density of H and He in the L1SM and the direction of the relative motion between the sun and the LISM in the very vicinity of the sun. The velocity module Vw and the LISM temperature T are more adequately found from a measurement of the Lyman α line shape, which is an image of the velocity distribution of H atoms.

A summary of results will be presented, together with a discussion of the methods of interpretation and their difficulties. The vector is found to be 20 ± 1 km.s-1 in the direction α = 254 ± 3°, δ = - 17 ± 3°, quite different from the Apex direction. This means that the LISM is moving also in respect to the local frame of reference giving rise to the socalled Interstellar Wind. This wind blows in the galactic plane at 16 km.s-1, in the direction , significantly different from the direction found by interstellar absorption lines on stars within ≃ 100 pc, pointing to a local significance of this flow. The temperature of the LISM is T = 8,000 ± 1,000 K, the density n (H) ≃ 0.04 to 0.06 cm-3, and the helium density n (He) ≃ 0.015 to 0.020. The high helium/hydrogen ratio, in respect to the cosmological ratio, would imply that a substantial part of the hydrogen is ionized. Temperature, density and degree of ionization of the LISM are suggesting that the sun is now in an intermediate phase of the interstellar medium, at the Interface between a hot and tenuous gas, and a dense and cold cloud of gas.
