Let G be a lattice-ordered group (l-group) and H a subgroup of G. H is said to be an l-subgroup of G if it is a sublattice of G. H is said to be convex if h1, h2 ∈ H and h2 ≦ g ≦ h2 imply g ∈ H. The normal convex l-subgroups (l-ideals) of an l-group play the same role in the study of lattice-ordered groups as do normal subgroups in the investigation of groups. For this reason, an l-group is said to be l-simple if it has no non-trivial l-ideals. As in group theory, a central task in the examination of lattice-ordered groups is to characterise those l-groups which are l-simple.

Some years ago Heins (1) proved that a Riemann surface which can be conformally imbedded in every closed Riemann surface of a fixed positive genus g is conformally equivalent to a bounded plane domain. In the proof the main effort is required to prove that a surface satisfying this condition is schlichtartig. Heins gave quite a simple proof of the remaining portion (1; Lemma 1). The main part of the proof depended on exhibiting a family of surfaces of genus g such that a surface which could be conformally imbedded in all of them was necessarily schlichtartig. Another proof using a different construction was recently given by Rochberg (2). We will give here a further proof based on the method of the extremal metric and using a further construction which is in some ways more direct than those previously given.

A ring R is called a qc-ring if each cyclic R-module is quasi-injective. For various properties of these rings we refer to Ahsan (1) and Koehler (15). In this paper we shall obtain some additional results related to qc-rings. The scheme of the paper is as follows. Section 2 contains various preliminary definitions and results. In Section 3, we shall prove that every commutative hypercyclic ring is a qc-ring. In this section, we shall also show that a qc-ring which satisfies the ascending chain condition on its annihilators has nilpotent Jacobson-radical. Finally, in Section 4, we shall study rings all of whose proper factor rings are qc. Such rings will be called “ restricted qc ”.

The purpose of this paper is to impose conditions on a radical class P so that the P-radical of the ring of n × n-matrices over a ring A is equal to the ring of n×n-matrices over the ring P(A). In (1), Amitsur gave such conditions, but with the stipulation that the radical class P contained all zero-rings (rings in which all products are zero). In what follows, we shall be working within the class of associative rings.

In this note we present some rather loosely connected results on Banach algebras together with some illustrative examples. We consider various conditions on a Banach algebra which imply that it is finite dimensional. We also consider conditions which imply the existence of non-zero nilpotents, and hence the existence of finite dimensional subalgebras. In the setting of Banach algebras quasinilpotents figure more prominently than nilpotents. We give an example of a non-commutative Banach algebra in which 0 is the only quasinilpotent; this resolves a problem of Hirschfeld and Zelazko (4).

Consider a class C of projective R-modules, where R is a commutative ring with identity, which satisfies the conditions of (2), namely that C is closed under the operations of direct sum and isomorphism and C contains the zero module. Following (2) a module M is said to have C-cotype n (respectively C-type n) if it has a projective resolution … → Pn → P0 → M → 0 with Pi ∈ C for i>n (respectively Pi ∈ C for i≦n). Let S be the class of modules of C-cotype −1, equivalently of C-type infinity. It is assumed throughout that S is a Serre Class. We define an abelian category of modules with the property that C-cotype is homological dimension in while in the case C = 0, S is just the category of R-modules. It follows that all categorical results on homological dimension also hold for cotype.

It is sometimes desirable to know in what circumstances a measurable set valued function admits a measurable selector; this problem occurs regularly in the theory of optimal control (see for example (3) and (7)). In this paper we demonstrate the existence of measurable selectors in two particular cases where the choice of selector has a simple geometrical interpretation, namely that of being a “ nearest-point ” selector, as is explained in detail below. This work derives in part from that of C. Castaing, particularly from Théorème 3.4 of (2), of which this is an extension.

The aim of this paper is to establish a conjecture of Shapiro (10) that an F-space (complete metric linear space) with the Hahn-Banach Extension Property is locally convex. This result was proved by Shapiro for F-spaces with Schauder bases; other similar results have been obtained by Ribe (8). The method used in this paper is to establish the existence of basic sequences in most F-spaces.

For each non-empty subset Λ of the complex plane, let (Λ) be the set of all those operators (on a fixed Hilbert space H) whose spectrum is included in Λ. The problem of spectral approximation is to determine how closely each operator on H can be approximated (in the norm) by operators in (Λ). The problem appears to be connected with the stability theory of certain differential equations. (Consider the case in which Λ is the right half plane.) In its general form the problem is extraordinarily difficult. Thus, for instance, even when Λ is the singleton {0}, so that (Λ) is the set of quasinilpotent operators, the determination of the closure of (Λ) has been an open problem for several years (3, Problem 7).

Roughly speaking a suitable theory is a theory T together with its formal provability predicate Prv (.). A pseudo-topological space is a boolean algebra B which carries a derivative operation d and its associated closure operation c. Thus we can pretend that B is a topological space. We show that the Lindenbaum algebra B(T) of a suitable theory becomes, in a natural way, a pseudotopological space, and hence we can translate properties of T into topological language, as properties of B(T). We do this translation for several properties of T, including (1) satisfying Gödel's first theorem, (2) satisfying Löb's theorem and (3) asserting one's own inconsistency. These correspond to the topological properties (1) having an isolated point, (2) being scattered, (3) being discrete.

Bade, in (1), studied Boolean algebras of projections on Banach spaces and showed that a σ-complete Boolean algebra of projections on a Banach space enjoys properties formally similar to those of a Boolean algebra of projections on Hilbert space. (His exposition is reproduced in (7: XVII).) Edwards and Ionescu Tulcea showed that the weakly closed algebra generated by a σ-complete Boolean algebra of projections can be represented as a von Neumann algebra; and that the representation isomorphism can be chosen to be norm, weakly, and strongly bicontinuous on bounded sets (8): Bade's results were then seen to follow from their Hilbert space counterparts. I show here that it is natural to relax the condition of σ-completeness to weak relative compactness; indeed, a Boolean algebra of projections has σ-completion if and only if it is weakly relatively compact (Theorem 1). Then, following the derivation of the theorem of Edwards and Ionescu Tulcea from the Vidav characterisation of abstract C*-algebras (see (9)), I give a result (Theorem 2) which, with its corollary, includes (1: 2.7, 2.8, 2.9, 2.10, 3.2, 3.3, 4.5).

In a recent paper (1), Jones extended the definition of the convolution of two distributions to cover certain pairs of distributions which could not be convolved in the sense of the previous definition. As is well known, the linear Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem on a bounded real interval [a, b] possesses a family of eigenfunctions which is a complete orthonormal system for the real Hilbert space L2[a, b], i.e. there exists a sequence of eigenfunctions un such that (ui, uj) = δij (Kronecker delta) for i, j ∈ N (the set of positive integers) and, if u ∈ L2[a, b], u = where cj = (u, uj). Pimbley (4, p. 113), raises the question as to whether similar completeness results hold for nonlinear problems. In this note we show that certain nonlinear Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problems possess eigenfunctions which form a basis for L2[a, b], i.e. there exists a sequence of eigenfunctions {vn} for the nonlinear problem such that every u ∈ L2[a, b] can be expressed in the form u = by means of a unique sequence {cn} of real numbers.
