Zinc borate has long been used as a protector for wood products due to its fungicide, insecticide and flame retardant properties. In this initial study, its capacity as a flame retardant when applied to Eucalyptus grandis wood is evaluated; micronized zinc borate, synthesized from zinc oxide and boric acid in our laboratory was used. The methodology used in the study is the use of the Vandersall tunnel, which allowed analyzing parameters such as the flame spread, the carbonization index, the carbonization area and the wood weight loss. The results show a remarkable improvement in these parameters after the application of micronized zinc borate. For the longest fire exposure time, the percentage decrease of each evaluated parameter is, for tangential and radial plane respectively: 31.27-43.00% for flame spread, 36.66-40.86% for carbonization area, 33.01-52.49% for carbonization index and 19.86-57.80% for mass loss.

We have proposed and demonstrated numerically an ultra-small (4×4μm2) hydrogen sensor based on micro ring resonator. With a palladium or platinum layer coated on the inner surface of the micro ring resonator, the device is highly sensitive to the low hydrogen concentration variation and the sensitivity is at least one magnitude order larger than the optical fiber-based hydrogen sensor. We have also investigated the tradeoff between the portion coverage of palladium/platinum layer and the sensitivity. The width of the hydrogen sensitive layer is also studied and the minimum feature width is determined to be the length of the ring waveguide evanescent wave. This ultra-small optical hydrogen sensor will be promising to realize highly compact sensor with integration capability for applications on hydrogen fuel economy.

Mechanical properties of neurons represent a key factor that determines the functionality of neuronal cells and the formation of neural networks. The main source of mechanical stability for the cell is a biopolymer network of microtubules and actin filaments that form the main components of the cellular cytoskeleton. This biopolymer network is responsible for the growth of neuronal cells as they extend neurites to connect with other neurons, forming the nervous system. Here we present experimental results that combine atomic force microscopy (AFM) and fluorescence microscopy to produce systematic, high-resolution elasticity and fluorescence maps of cortical neurons. This approach allows us to apply external forces to neurons, and to monitor the dynamics of the cell cytoskeleton. We measure how the elastic modulus of neurons changes upon changing the ambient temperature, and identify the cytoskeletal components responsible for these changes. These results demonstrate the importance of taking into account the effect of ambient temperature when measuring the mechanical properties of cells.

A 3D printed device has been developed for cost-effective production of rifampicin loaded lipid polymer hybrid nanoparticles. These nanoparticles show considerable potential for research related to the treatment of Tuberculosis. The nanoparticles synthesized by the device possess a core-shell drug-lipid polymer assembly. The synthesis conditions have been optimized with respect to the parameters like flow-rate, size of device, and the concentration of rifampicin and poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (in which the drug molecules are incorporated). The nanoparticles synthesized by the 3D printed device yield smaller nanoparticles with narrow size distributions in contrast to traditional sonication method. The device can be operated either by hand or by using syringe pumps. These nanoparticles also show excellent antibacterial activity which typically correlates with a reduction in drug dosing frequency to promote patient adherence to drug regimens.

Environmentally aware automotive manufacturers recycle aluminum production scrap in closed-loop systems to generate environmental and financial savings. Further savings could be gained if material demand is reduced, through improving the material utilization of the production process. Since a more efficient production process generates less scrap, the opportunity for closed loop recycling reduces when material demand reduces. This paper investigates the interaction between material demand reduction and closed loop recycling for an aluminum intensive case-study vehicle. It identifies the greatest environmental and financial savings when both strategies are implemented together. It is shown that a ‘recycled content’ target does not capture these saving opportunities. It is recommended that automotive manufacturers set targets for both material utilization and scrap recovery, to simultaneously promote closed-loop recycling and material demand reduction.

Nanosized Platinum (Pt) nanocrystals (NCs) have been extensively investigated in catalytic fields because of their high reactivity due to the unique electron structure. However, the rarity and the high cost of Pt limit its applications in industry. To reduce the usage of Pt in catalytic industry, research interests have been extended to Pt-based nanoalloys. Among various nanostructures, nanoframes (NFs) showed promising catalytic performance even with a lower metallic loading dose. Herein, we report a facile and robust method to transfer the Pt-Ni tetrahexahedral (THH) NCs into THH NFs in which carbon monoxide (CO) plays a role of the “etching reagent”. The driving force of the etching is a formation of gaseous metallic complex, Ni(CO)4, known as Mond Process, preferentially dealloying nickel atoms along <100> directions of the Pt-Ni THH NCs. It is determined that the resultant Pt-Ni THH NFs possess an open, stable and high-index preserved nanostructure, in which the outside atomic layers are composed of only Pt atoms with surface strains. Compared to a solution-based etching process, this approach requires less etching time and generates a well-defined structure. The associated thermal annealing operation also releases extra internal stress, making the NFs more stable with fewer surface defects. Such Pt-Ni THH NFs show interesting potentials in the improvement of stability and activity as advanced catalysts.

Ternary sulfides and selenides in the distorted-perovskite structure (“chalcogenide perovskites”) are predicted by theory to be semiconductors with band gap in the visible-to-infrared and may be useful for optical, electronic, and energy conversion technologies. Density functional theory can be used in combination with computational thermodynamics to predict the pressure-temperature phase diagrams for chalcogenide perovskites. We report results using the Strongly Constrained and Appropriately Normed (SCAN) and the rVV10 density functionals, and compare to previously-published results using the PBEsol functional. We highlight the windows of thermodynamic equilibrium between solid chalcogenide perovskites and the vapor phase at high temperature and very low pressure. These phase diagrams can guide adsorption-limited growth of ternary chalcogenides by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE).

Lithium solid electrolyte with NASICON structure in the form of Li1+2xAlxTi2−xSixP3−xO12 solid solution has been prepared by high temperature solid state reaction using low cost kaolin as the starting material. The crystal structure of the solid solution was investigated by powder X-ray diffraction. The AC impedance measurements indicate that ionic conductivity increased by more than one order of magnitude when a small amount of Al3+ and Si4+ ions were incorporated into the LiTi2(PO4)3 crystal structure. The significant improvement on ionic conductivity can be attributed to the increased interstitial Li+ ions in the crystal structure. The highest ionic conductivity was found in Li1.2Al0.1Ti1.9Si0.1P2.9O12: 8.3 x 10-5 S·cm-1 at room temperature (21°C) and 1.5 x 10-3 S·cm-1 at 100°C.

Here gelatin biotemplated platinum aerogels were prepared from gelatin hydrogels equilibrated in K2PtCl4 solutions ranging from 1-250 mM and reduced with sodium borohydride before supercritical drying in liquid CO2. Scanning electron microscopy revealed an average ligament diameter of 40.6 ± 9.7 nm and a pore size range of ∼10 – 200 nm. Thermogravimetric analysis correlated the ratio of metal content to biotemplate mass as a function of equilibrated platinum ion solution, and X-ray diffractometry indicated platinum metal with no detectable oxide phases. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicated a specific capacitance of 1.92 F/g, with a corresponding specific electrochemical accessible surface area of 6.39 m2/g. Cyclic voltammetry performed in H2SO4 demonstrated biotemplated platinum aerogel potential for catalytic and energy storage applications.

Preliminary thin films of barium zirconate-titanate (BZT) are grown by pulsed laser deposition from bulk ceramic targets on magnesium oxide (001) substrates. Growth conditions are optimized for film crystallinity and thick (100 nm) films are deposited. These films are seen to be growing with a cube-on-cube epitaxial relation. The lattice constant of the alloy follows Vegard’s law as expected but shows a reasonable amount of non-linearity in the relation between band gap and composition.

Leaching results on fragments of high burnup (65 MWd/kgU) UO2 fuel from a commercial pressurized water reactor are presented. The experiment was performed in simplified granitic groundwater under a hydrogen pressure of up to 5 MPa, representing conditions in a water intrusion scenario for a Swedish KBS-3 design spent nuclear fuel repository. The freshly crushed fragments were pre-washed for 6 days to remove pre-oxidized matrix and part of the instant release fraction of the radionuclide inventory, and then transferred to an autoclave for leaching under hydrogen conditions. Following an initial release of U attributed to dissolution of a pre-oxidized fuel layer caused by the aerated handling mainly during the transfer from pre-washing to autoclave, the U concentration decreased with time to levels of 2-5x10-9 M, which corresponds, approximately, to the solubility of amorphous UO2. The release of radionuclides such as Cs and Sr gradually declined indicating a transition to inhibition of the fuel matrix dissolution.

In this work, a printable tungsten disulfide (WS2) based ink is developed from readily available WS2 powder (0.6 µm average particle size), and an ink-jet printing based deposition method for a tungsten disulfide film is presented. WS2 flake coverage and bulk electrical characteristics under three different irradiance conditions are examined and discussed. Presence of excitons in the absorbance of the inks is performed by optical UV-Vis spectrometry. Metrics using the A exciton peak generated by the few-layered flakes are used to calculate the average flake lateral dimensions, the concentration of WS2 in the inks after size selection and filtering, as well as the average monolayer count of the flakes. After printing, scanning electron microscopy is used to confirm average flake lateral size and average flake area coverage, while an atomic force microscope is used to confirm flake thickness.

The bulk heterojunction morphology of organic solar cells widely controls their device efficiency and stability. Structural order and domain size of the donor phase strongly impact the charge separation efficiency, recombination rates, and the hole percolation through the bulk to the electrode. Herewith, we report a comprehensive study on the control of polymeric order already initiated in solution by the introduction of orthogonal solvent additives to the common solution of anthracene containing poly(p-phenylene-ethynylene)-alt-poly(p-phenylene-vinylene) (PPE-PPV) copolymer, bearing statistically substituted linear octyloxy and 2-ethylhexyloxy side-chains in 1:1 ratio along the backbone (AnE-PVstat), and fullerene derivative phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). The first solvent, a 1:1 blend of chlorobenzene and chloroform, had been discovered to promote phase separation in solution and deposited films. This effect could be further enhanced and was precisely controlled by addition of methanol to the common solution in various volume fractions. Thus the ability to transfer the polymer aggregates from the solution into films was applied to solar cells and is investigated in detail.

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are zero-dimensional material with characteristics derived from functionalized graphene precursors are graphene sheets a few nanometers in the lateral dimension having a several-layer thickness. Combining the structure of graphene with the quantum confinement and edge effects, GQDs possess unique chemical behavior and physical properties. Intense research activity in GQDs is attributed to their novel phenomena of charge transport and light absorption and photoluminescence excitation. The optical transitions are known to be available up to 6 eV in GQDs, applicable for ultraviolet photonics and optoelectronics devices, biomedical imaging capabilities and technologies. We present facile hydrothermal and solvothermal methods for synthesizing homogenous dispersed and uniform sized GQDs with a strong greenish and violet blue emission peaks at ∼10-14% yield. This approach enabled a large-scale production of aqueous GQD dispersions without the need for chemical stabilizers. The structure and emission mechanism of the GQDs have been studied by combining extensive characterization techniques and rigorous control experiments. We further demonstrate the distinctive advantages of such GQDs as high-performance photodetectors (PDs). Here we also report high-efficient photocurrent (PC) behaviors consisting of multilayer GQDs sandwiched between monolayer graphene sheets. It is conceivable that the observed unique PD characteristics proved to be dominated by tunneling of charge carriers which occurs through the multiple energy states within the bandgap of GQDs, based on bias-dependent variation of the band profiles. This results in novel dark current and PC behaviors. The external quantum efficiency (η) is predicted to be 47% at applied potential 2 V. These findings highlight rich photophysics and comparable performance of graphene/graphene oxide hybrids opening up potential applications as optoelectronic devices.

Wide bandgap Cd1-xZnxTe (CZT) and Cd1-xMgxTe (CMT) have drawn attention as top cells in tandem devices. These materials allow tuning of the band gap over a wide range by controlling the Zn or Mg concentration with little alteration to the base CdTe properties. Historically, CdS has been used as a heterojunction partner for CZT or CMT devices. However, these devices show a significant lower open circuit voltage (VOC) than expected for wide bandgap absorbers. Recent modelling work suggests that poor band alignment between the CdS emitter and absorber results in a high concentration of holes at the interface, which increased recombination and limits the VOC. This recombination should be exacerbated for wider bandgap absorbers such as CZT and CMT. In this study, we use numerical simulations with SCAPS-1D software to investigate the band alignment in the front contacts for wider bandgap CdTe based absorbers. Results show that by replacing the CdS with a wide bandgap emitter layer, the VOC can be greatly improved, though under certain conditions, the fill factor remains sensitive to the location of the emitter conduction band. As a result, different transparent front contacts were also investigated to determine a device structure required to produce a high performance CZT or CMT top-cell for tandems devices.

Composites from carbon nanotubes and polymers have been synthesized and studied. The composites were obtained joining carbon nanotubes with polymethyl methacrylate, nylon-6 and polystyrene. The materials were observed through scanning electron microscopy to evaluate the carbon nanotubes dispersion in the polymeric matrices. FTIR and Raman spectroscopies were used to analyze the interactions among functionalized and non-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes and polymers, demonstrating affinity and peculiar spectra behaviors for each composite with different carbon nanotubes loads.

The chemical bath deposition of wide bandgap n-type SnS2 films and role of sulphur precursor in suppression of p-type SnS phase is described. The as-deposited films are highly polycrystalline in hexagonal crystal structure. Inclusion of oxygen in the film phase is shown by the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman scattering methods which suggests the CBD films are better described as tin disulfide-oxide (SnS2-xOx) x=0.1. A possible mechanism of film formation is presented. Optical analysis showed energy bandgap 2.76 eV for SnS2-xOx film which decreases to 2.62 eV with the inclusion of the secondary SnS phases.

Commuter trains with solid axle configuration are produced from medium carbon steel due to cost restrictions. High-speed trains have hollow axle configuration for reduced weight and are made from high strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels. The HSLA steels have higher amounts of C, Cr, Ni, Mo, V and Nb, and are more expensive than medium carbon steels. The effects of phase proportions, carbon equivalent (CE), yield strength and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) on material costs of existing railway axle steels were studied using Thermo-Calc. Medium carbon rail axle steels had higher Fe3C phase proportions than the HSLA steel rail axle grades. Higher affinity of Cr, Mo and V for C than Fe resulted in decreased cementite proportions. The HSLA steels had yield strengths above 370 MPa, and UTS above 750 MPa, with increased material cost above $3300 per ton. A scattered distribution was observed for the pearlite weight fraction and material costs, with most between $3200 and $3400. The yield and tensile strengths increased with increasing carbon equivalent and pearlite weight fraction. The data aided the selection and design of alloys with better mechanical and corrosion properties at reduced material cost.

Macroscopic assembling of responsive hydrogels has been used to construct soft actuators that transform their shape upon external stimuli. It remains a challenge to establish a robust assembling interface between gels. Here, we demonstrate a fabrication of bilayered hydrogel actuators assembled by host-guest recognition at the interface. The supramolecular recognition enabled efficient, rapid, and robust macroscopic assembling of hydrogels, which was utilized to create gel bilayers that were actuated upon unbalanced swelling/deswelling.

In this article, we report low-temperature electron spin resonance (ESR) investigations carried out on solution processed three-layer inverted solar cell structures: PC61BM/CH3NH3PbI3/PEDOT:PSS/Glass, where PC61BM and PEDOT:PSS act as electron and hole transport layers, respectively. ESR measurements were conducted on ex-situ light (1 Sun) illuminated samples. We find two distinct ESR spectra. First ESR spectra resembles a typical powder pattern, associated with gx = gy = 4.2; gz = 9.2, found to be originated from Fe3+ extrinsic impurity located in the glass substrate. Second ESR spectra contains a broad (peak-to-peak line width ∼ 10 G) and intense ESR signal appearing at g = 2.008; and a weak, partly overlapped, but much narrower (peak-to-peak line width ∼ 4 G) ESR signal at g = 2.0022. Both sets of ESR spectra degrade in intensity upon light illumination. The latter two signals were found to stem from light-induced silicon dangling bonds and oxygen vacancies, respectively. Our controlled measurements confirm that these centers were generated during UV-ozone treatment of the glass substrate –a necessary step to be performed before PEDOT:PSS is spin coated. This work forms a significant step in understanding the light-induced- as well as extrinsic defects in perovskite solar cell materials.
