Lysosomal “mottled appearance”, or uneven electron-dense content related to monoclonal gammopathy (MG), has been mainly described in light chain proximal tubulopathy (LCPT). We aimed to determine the ultrastructural characteristics of lysosomal mottled appearance in kidney biopsies and its association with LCPT and MG. Seventy-seven biopsies were grouped into LCPT (n = 5), MG conditions other than LCPT (n = 43), and non-MG conditions (n = 29). The mottled lysosomes in the renal tubules were evaluated using transmission electron microscopy and morphometric analysis. Mottled lysosomes were more prevalent (% of present cases) and frequent (no. of mottled lysosomes/20,000× ultramicroscopic field) in the LCPT group (100% and 8.20 ± 4.15/field) than in the MG (41.9% and 1.13 ± 2.05/field) and non-MG (37.9% and 0.80 ± 1.44/field) groups. In morphometric analysis of all mottled lysosomes (n = 520) detected from the 34 biopsies (5 LCPT, 18 MG, and 11 non-MG), we found that mottled lysosomes were larger, more irregular, and more electron-dense for the LCPT group than for the MG and non-MG groups. Therefore, mottled lysosomes can be present in disorders other than LCPT or even without MG. The morphological characteristics of mottled lysosomes could provide objective guidance for the diagnosis of LCPT.

In this study, the gut structure and excretory system of Carpocoris mediterraneus which is phytophagous insect, were described with light and electron microscopies and discussed in relation to other Heteroptera species. The salivary system has two principal and accessory salivary glands, two principal and accessory gland ducts. The salivary gland and duct wall have a single layer of cuboidal cells. The duct lumen is surrounded by a thick intima layer. In the cytoplasm of the epithelial cells are seen vesicles. The gut includes fore, mid, and hindguts. The foregut consists of a long narrow tubular pharynx which opens into a slightly wider esophagus. The esophagus is thin walled and in turn opens into the midgut. The midgut has four regions (V1–V4). V1–V4 walls have a monolayered epithelium. V1 epithelium is double-nucleated. V1 cytoplasm contains numerous vesicles, secretory granules, spherocrystals, and cytoplasmic inclusions. Rod-shaped bacteria are seen in V4 lumen. The hindgut has pylorus and rectum. Malpighian tubules were attached in the pylorus. Malpighian tubules have a single-layer cuboidal epithelium. In their lumen, there are spherocrystals. The rectum wall has a monolayer of squamous epithelium and muscle layer. Numerous bacteria and uric acid crystals are seen in its lumen.

This study was conducted to assess the morphology of eggs and histology of the ovaries in female Isophya nervosa Ramme, 1931 (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae). While the egg morphology of I. nervosa was studied and examined by a stereomicroscope, a light microscope, and a scanning electron microscope, respectively, the morphology and histology of the ovary of this species were studied and examined by a stereomicroscope, a light microscope, a scanning electron microscope, and a transmission electron microscope, respectively. We found that the adult female had two pairs of ovaries, lateral oviduct, common oviduct, and spermatheca. Morphological study of the ovariole revealed that it is categorized under panoistic type of ovariole which is divided into three regions, the terminal filament, the germarium, and the vitellarium. We also observed that the eggs in I. nervosa have an ellipsoidal shape and are brown in color. Three different layers such as extrachorion, exochorion, and endochorion were observed. When the egg morphology is examined, it is understood that the surface pattern of the egg and the features of the micropylar areas may be distinguishing characters at the subfamily level, in addition to known classical taxonomic characters.

The digestive tract of the little owl, Athene noctua (Strigiformes: Strigidae), is described in two different seasons. The digestive tract of this bird follows the basic model for that of a predatory bird. The cervical esophagus is not expanded to form a crop. The internal surface of the esophagus forms numerous longitudinal folds provided with numerous mucous glands. These longitudinal folds increase in number and vary in depth posteriorly. The folds of the proventriculus are composed of simple branched tubular glands. The ventriculus is lined by a thin layer of koilin. The number of goblet cells gradually increases from the duodenum to the rectum, and the lymphatic tissue diffuses within the lamina propria. The esophageal glands secrete acid mucopolysaccharides, while the gastric glands of the stomach, the goblet cells, and crypts of Lieberkühn secrete acid mucopolysaccharides. Proteins were observed in the different histological structures of the digestive tract. Morphometric and histometric studies showed differences between summer and winter in the esophagus and glandular stomach (especially in winter), but no seasonal differences were seen in the muscular stomach, or small and large intestines.

Dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius) is adapted to survive the harsh environments. It has some key adaptation peculiarities in various organs. In this study, we aimed to map the distribution pattern of unique regulatory devices along the course of the pulmonary vessels using histological and histochemical analyses. Arteries with variable wall thickness and spirally oriented course were recorded within the adventitia of the main pulmonary artery. Throttle arteries and glomus bolsters were found within the wall of the lobar pulmonary artery. The bronchial artery was located within the wall of all bronchi reaching the subsegmental branches and it had elastic longitudinal muscular intima bolsters. Arteries with double muscular media were demonstrated in the pulmonary pleura. These bolsters are suggested to play a complicated role that allows for hemodynamic, humeral, and thermoregulatory activities. The lumen of some subsegmental pulmonary veins revealed occasional constrictions arising from the corresponding muscular pad-like protrusions of the tunica media. These veins may possess occlusive or constrictive mechanisms and their obstruction induces engorgement of the associated capillary bed in addition to restricting venous outflow. Collectively, these data strongly recommend a crucial role for the special regulatory devices in preserving the camel pulmonary function in the harsh desert environment.

The intracellular localization of Ca2+, Ca2+-ATPase, Calmodulin, and Calbindin D-28KD have been studied in testes of the toad Leptodactylus chaquensis, using ultracytochemical and immunohistochemical techniques. The Ca2+ presences in the nucleus and into the mitochondria of the germ cells, together with the activity of Ca2+-ATPase detected in the nuclear envelope and mitochondrial crests, suggest the participation of this transporter in the storage of Ca2+. In Sertoli cells, Ca2+ deposits were also found in vesicles and lamellar bodies. Calmodulin and Calbindin D-28KD were revealed in the cytoplasm of both cell types. At the spermatozoon level, the cation deposits were located in the subacrosomal space and in the acrosomal vesicle. Ca2+-ATPase activity was observed in the acrosomal and plasma membranes of the gamete that suggests the existence of a transport system responsible for maintaining low cytoplasmic Ca2+ levels. The activity of Ca2+-ATPase and the location of Ca2+ deposits in gamete tail would be related to flagellar movement. The colocalization of Ca2+ deposits and their binding proteins in efferent duct cells would probably be associated with secretory activity. Considering that intracellular Ca2+ is present in different gonadal cells, this work would provide a better understanding of the cation importance in the testicular functions of this species.

Social wasps have a widespread Neotropical distribution and are important pollinators and biological control agents for pest insects. The foraging activity of wasps is influenced by biotic and abiotic factors that are detected by the antennal sensilla that vary according to species, sex, caste, and environmental conditions. This study compares the types and quantities of antennal sensilla with a scanning electron microscope between the nocturnal Apoica flavissima and the diurnal Polistes simillimus wasps. Six types of sensilla were found in the antennae of both species: placoid, coeloconic, basiconic-type 1, basiconic-type 2, trichoid-type 1, and trichoid-type 2. Sensilla chaetica were found only in the scape and pedicel of A. flavissima. In the nocturnal wasp, there are 19,132.27 ± 1,247.72 sensilla in the left and 17,746.46 ± 1,477.46 in the right antennae, whereas in the diurnal wasp 14,936.72 ± 1,271.69 in the left and 16,090.82 ± 1,345.3 in the right antennae. A. flavissima has a longer antennal length and number of sensilla than P. simillimus. The higher number of antennal sensilla in the nocturnal wasp is not linked with the antennal size. The association of antennal sensilla functions with ecological and behavioral factors of A. flavissima and P. simillimus are discussed.

Composite, helical nanostructures formed using cooperative interactions of liquid crystals and Au nanoparticles were studied using a scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) mode. The investigated helical assemblies exhibit long-range hierarchical order across length scales, as a result of the crystallization (freezing) directed growth mechanism of nanoparticle-coated twisted nanoribbons and their ability to form organized bundles. Here, STEM methods were used to reproduce the 3D structure of the Au nanoparticle double helix.

This work presents the microstructure of the cross-section of a newly developed Nb/Inconel 601 weld with particular attention paid to the continuity, morphology of the interface, and the microstructural changes within its vicinity. Both scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy techniques are excellent tools to analyze the microstructure that affects both mechanical and corrosion resistance properties of the obtained product. Grain size examination and their orientation together with the character of grain boundaries by the electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) technique were performed followed by chemical composition determination across the interface with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) in SEM. Then, the microstructure observations of the mixed region located at the Nb/Inconel 601 interface using the TEM technique allowed its chemical and phase composition to be revealed.

This paper presents the comparison of the microstructure of the interface zone formed between titanium (Ti Gr. 1) and steel (P265GH+N) in various processing stages—directly after explosive welding versus the annealing state. Transmission electron microscopy technique served as an excellent tool for studies of the sharp interface in-between the waves. Directly after the welding process in this area, a thin layer of the metastable β-Ti (Fe) solid solution was observed. In the next step, two variants of annealing have been employed: ex situ and in situ in TEM, which revealed the complete information on the interface zone transformation. The results have shown that during the annealing at 600°C for 1.5 h, the diffusion of carbon towards titanium caused the formation of titanium carbides with a layered arrangement. Compared to our previous studies, the carbides found here have a hexagonal structure. Furthermore, changes in the dislocation structure were observed, indicating the occurrence of recovery processes. Possible reasons for differences observed in the microstructure of the interface formed due to ex situ and in situ annealing are also discussed. The microstructure observations are accompanied by the microhardness measurements, which showed that the annealing caused a significant reduction in the microhardness values.

The presented research focused on the microstructural characteristics of explosively welded three-layered Ti Grade (Gr) 1/Alloy 400/1.4462 steel clads before and after heat treatment being of large practical potential. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses have shown that both interfaces formed between the plates are continuous and without defects. The in-depth examination was dedicated to the upper Ti Gr 1/Alloy 400 interface, located closer to the explosive material, therefore, subjected to more extreme welding conditions. The presence of cubic phase Ti2Ni, hexagonal phase Ni3Ti, and tetragonal phase (CuxNi1−x)2Ti were confirmed within the melted zones, which slightly widened due to annealing, being an essential step in the manufacturing of these modern materials. Transmission electron microscopy observations in the nano scale confirmed the preliminary chemical composition analyses collected with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy in SEM. They additionally revealed the interface zone microstructure transformation due to the annealing. It was evidenced that initially mixed phases in the form of grains, after heat treatment formed irregular bands arranged in the following sequence: Alloy 400/Ni3Ti/(CuxNi1−x)2Ti/Ti2Ni/Ti Gr 1. A clear segregation of Cu and Ni forming two separate layers was also noticed. These diffusion phenomena may influence the strength of the final product, therefore need further studies regarding the prolonged annealing state.

The scope of this work includes detailed microstructural investigations using high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy of the oxide scales and deposits formed on nozzle ring vanes made of IN713LC alloy during the operation of an auxiliary power unit under real conditions. The paper presents the differences of oxidation processes between the suction and the pressure sides of the vanes. It has been shown that in the pressure side of the vane, where a greater flow of exhaust gases from the combustion chamber is present, the oxidation process is accompanied by a deposition of among others (i.a.) Fe, Mg, Ca, Na, and P, while on the suction side of the vane, the thermal stresses and the mechanical loading most likely lead to a cracking of the oxide scale. A segregation of Cr, Ni, Ta, and Ti to the boundaries of α-Al2O3 grains is observed, which may indicate their diffusion from a metal to a gas atmosphere.

The properties and the shape memory effect depend, among other things, on chemical composition, as well as the method of shape memory alloy (SMA) production. One of the manufacturing methods that leads to the amorphous/nanocrystalline SMA is high-energy ball milling combined with annealing. Using this technique, an SMA memory alloy, with the nominal chemical composition of Ni25Ti50Cu25, was produced from commercial elemental powders (purity −99.7%). The structure and morphology were characterized (at the various stages of its production) by the use of X-ray diffraction, as well as electron microscopy (both scanning and transmission). Choosing the appropriate grinding time made it possible to produce an NiTiCu alloy with a different crystallite size. Its average size changed from 6.5 nm (after 50 h) to about 2 nm (100 h). Increasing the grinding time up to 140 h resulted in the formation of areas that showed the B19 martensite and the Ti2(Ni,Cu) phase with the average crystallite size of about 6 nm (as milled). After crystallization, the average size increased to 11 nm.

The study of the fundamentals of the α → ω and β → ω phase transformations induced by high-pressure torsion (HPT) in Ti–Nb-based alloys is presented in the current work. Prior to HPT, three alloys with 5, 10, and 20 wt% of Nb were annealed in the temperature range of 700–540°C in order to obtain the (α + β)-phase state with a different amount of the β-phase. The samples were annealed for a long time in order to reach equilibrium Nb content in the α-solid solution. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques were used for the characterization of the microstructure evolution and phase transformations. HPT results in a strong grain refinement of the microstructure, a partial transformation of the α-phase into the ω-phase, and a complete β → ω phase transformation. Two kinds of the ω-phase with different chemical compositions were observed after HPT. The first one was formed from the β-phase, enriched in Nb, and the second one from the almost Nb-pure α-phase. It was found that the α → ω phase transformation depends on the Nb content in the initial α-Ti phase. The less the amount of Nb in the α-phase, the more the amount of the α-phase is transformed into the ω-phase.

In this study, binary as-cast Al–Cu alloys: Al25Cu (Al–25%Cu) and Al45Cu (Al–45%Cu) (in wt%) were severely plastically deformed by extrusion combined with a reversible torsion (KoBo) method to produce an ultrafine-grained structure (UFG). The binary Al–Cu alloys consist of α-Al and intermetallic Al2Cu phases. The morphology and volume fraction of α-Al and Al2Cu phases depend on the Cu content. The KoBo process was carried out using extrusion ratios of λ = 30 and λ = 98. The effect of phase refinement has been studied by means of scanning electron microscopy with electron backscattering diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy. The mechanical properties were assessed using compression tests. Detailed microstructural analysis shows that after the KoBo process, a large number fraction of high-angle boundaries (HABs) and a very fine grain structure (~2–4 μm) in both phases are created. An increase of λ ratio during the KoBo processing leads to a decrease in average grain size of α-Al and Al2Cu phases and an increase in fraction of HABs. UFG microstructure and high fraction of HABs provide the grain boundary sliding mechanism during KoBo deformation. UFG microstructure contributes to the enhanced mechanical properties. Compressive strength (Rc) of Al25Cu alloy increases from 172 to 340 MPa with an increase of λ. Compressive strain (Sc) for Al25Cu alloy increased from 35 to 67% with an increase of λ. High fraction of intermetallic phase in Al45Cu alloy was responsible for room temperature strengthening of alloy and low compressive strain. The deformed Al45Cu alloy with λ = 30 showed that Rc is 194 MPa and Sc is equal to 10%.

Rapidly solidified alloys with a nominal composition of Al76.5Fe23.5 and Al75.8Co24.2 (in at%), corresponding to the Al13Fe4 and Al13Co4 phases, were produced by a melt spinning technique. The microstructure and phase composition of the as-spun and heat-treated ribbons were examined by X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The as-spun ribbons consisted of columnar grains with an average size of 1–2 μm, which increased by a factor of 2 after applied heat treatment. The Al13Fe4 as-spun ribbon comprised of two phases: grains of the Al13Fe4 phase surrounded by solid solution of Al, transformed into a single monoclinic Al13Fe4 phase after annealing. The as-spun Al13Co4 ribbons had a multiphase structure. A decagonal quasicrystalline D-phase, the monoclinic M-Al13Co4 phase, and the Al9Co2 phase were identified in their microstructure. After the heat treatment, the mixture of the orthorhombic O-Al13Co4 phase and grains of monoclinic Y-Al13Co4 were observed. The investigations of catalytic properties were performed for the phenylacetylene hydrogenation reaction using pulverized ribbons in the initial state and after annealing. The degree of conversion was in the range of 8–27% and increased with the increasing reaction temperature. The highest selectivity to styrene was obtained for the Al13Fe4 alloy in the as-spun state.

Melt-spun Ni70Ga30 and Ni70Sn30 monolithic catalysts, when subjected to prolonged oxidation in air at 770 K, undergo different microstructural changes. Whereas Ni70Ga30 is largely stable and composed of Ni3Ga phase, the Ni70Sn30 develops a two-layer microstructure on the exposed ribbon surface. The two-layer structure consists of a Ni-rich zone, which is founded on a SnO2 sublayer. In the bulk, the Ni70Sn30 ribbon is heterogeneous in phase composition and comprises of Ni3Sn and Ni3Sn2 phases. The development of Ni particulates on the outer ribbon surface, through simple oxidation heat treatment, may thus be a way for improving the catalytic performance of Ni70Sn30 ribbons, resembling that of Ni3Al ribbons spontaneously activated under reaction conditions.

Advanced High-Strength Steels (AHSSs) are one of the most rapidly developing group of Fe-based metallic materials. Their excellent combination of high strength, ductility and formability is due to their complex microstructure and strain-induced martensitic transformation of metastable retained austenite (RA), which favors extra ductility of the sheet steels. A deformation temperature is one of the most important factors affecting the phase transformation behavior in these Fe–C–Mn–Al–Si systems. Therefore, the present study aimed at understanding the temperature-dependent phase transformations and structural phenomena in an advanced medium-Mn–Al-alloyed steel. The 3Mn steel was thermomechanically processed and subjected to tensile testing in a temperature range from 20°C to 200°C. The different extent of the strain-induced martensitic transformation and some softening phenomena of bainitic ferrite matrix were revealed using transmission electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction techniques. It was found that the thermal stability of RA is strongly dependent on the deformation temperature. Moreover, the dynamic recovery and carbide precipitation play a key role when the deformation temperature is increased to 140°C and higher temperatures.

The interaction of NCC-A (no cement content, with tabular corundum) refractory castable with corrosive refining steel slag CaO–Al2O3–SiO2–MgO–(FeO, MnO) was studied with static crucible corrosion tests. The corrosion process was evaluated using chemical and phase analyses, and the macro- and microstructures on the corrosion boundary of slag–refractory materials were investigated. We describe the corrosion progress and explain the NCC-A corrosion mechanism by oxide metallurgical slags. The alumina refractory material surface was wetted with molten oxide slag (contact angle θ1390°C from 10° to 20°). The slag penetrated through dissolution of the matrix (fine alumina cement), and the Ca–Si–Al slag, enriched with alumina, attacked the corundum grog. Marked changes in the chemical composition of the slag had an impact on the primary crystallization temperature. As the concentration of Al–O complexes increased in the slag, the binding parameters in Si–O complexes changed and complex tetrahedral units (Al–O–Si) and (Al–O–Mg) were created. Analyses of the corrosion interface grog show that calcium ions diffuse through structural defects in the corundum but Mg2+ diffusion was not observed. A sharp interface is observed between the slag and the corroded corundum layer. Differences in the chemical composition of the slag in the corrosion zone affected the convention stream, and formed the concave corrosion profile of the crucible.
