In a long series of papers published some years ago both here and elsewhere, Dr L. J. Slater has derived a large number of valuable results concerned with the theory of generalized hypergeometric functions.

Let X be a finite CW-complex, and ξ: Eξ → X a complex line-bundle on X. This bundle determines an element c1(ξ) in H2(X:Z) and a class ; let m(ξ), a(ξ) be the orders (possibly infinite) of these elements in their respective groups. How are m(ξ) and a(ξ) related? The answer is contained in the following three propositions.

A many-body variational calculation is carried out using a trial wave function which is a product of pair functions. An exact integro-differential equation for the pair function is derived, valid for any system of more than three Bose particles.

Let G be a bounded region in k-dimensional space, with boundary Γ, such that the Laplace equation,

Over the last thirty years, the study of C*-algebras has proceeded in a number of directions. On one hand, much effort has been devoted to understanding the structure of particular classes of algebras, such as the approximately finite (AF) algebras. On the other, general structure theorems have been sought. Classes of algebras defined by certain abstract properties have been investigated with a view to obtaining more concrete descriptions of the algebras. One of the earliest results of this type was the theorem of Glimm [13], later extended by Sakai [20] to the inseparable case, characterizing the non-type I C*-algebras as those algebras which contain a subalgebra with a quotient *-isomorphic to the CAR algebra.

It is shown that given k samples of nj units from it is possible to construct simultaneous confidence intervals for two given linear functions of population means, (where cij are known constants), when population variances are not equal.

In a previous paper(1) a number of problems in probability were considered arising out of the finite resolving time of a recording apparatus. It was shown that, although the probability distributions themselves are complicated, their Laplace transforms are relatively simple. Recently Feather(2) has discussed a number of additional problems arising in this connexion, including the number of coincidences, and the number of k-clusters. The method developed in (1) is readily applicable to these problems, and it will be shown how complete probability distributions can be derived. An alternative type of recorder is sometimes considered (3) which remains dead as long as events succeed each other at intervals less than τ. The mathematical problem here is somewhat different, but it can again be effectively dealt with by the use of Laplace transforms.

We give thorough analysis for the rotation functions of the critical orbits from which one can understand bifurcations of periodic orbits. Moreover, we give explicit formulas of the Conley–Zehnder indices of the interior and exterior collision orbits and show that the universal cover of the regularised energy hypersurface of the Euler problem is dynamically convex for energies below the critical Jacobi energy.

S. Bernstein (see(l), pp. 198–204) has proved that if

In the paper published in Mathematical Proceedings 79, 393–399, there is a gap in the proof of Theorem 2 which may present a difficulty to the reader. It occurs in the proof of non-degeneracy of the map g in the ring of matrices Zn, where Z is a finite field. Matrices are chosen, the first is diagonal with distinct entries and the others are

When n is larger than the number of elements in Z, then such an x0 does not exist in Zn. The argument can, however, be sustained in the following way.

The stability of a rectangular plate, subjected to constant thrust over opposite pairs of edges, has been treated with some degree of completeness for various boundary conditions. The more general problem, in which the thrusts are no longer constant, has not yet received any treatment apart from the approximate method developed by E. Schwerin†, which would appear to be capable of only limited extension. The object of this paper is accordingly the detailed consideration of a simple case when the thrust is no longer constant.

Let D be a division ring with central subfield F, n a positive integer and G a subgroup of GL(n, D) such that the F-subalgebra F[G] generated by G is the full matrix algebra Dn×n. If G is soluble then Snider [9] proves that G is abelian by locally finite. He also shows that this locally finite image of G can be any locally finite group. Of course not every abelian by locally finite group is soluble. This suggests that Snider's conclusion should apply to some wider class of groups.

In this paper we construct a (multihomogeneous) dualizing complex for A [Δ], the Stanley–Reisner ring of Δ over an arbitrary commutative noetherian ring A with identity, admitting a dualizing complex. In addition, some consequences are discussed.

An elaborated version of Zeeman's Catastrophe Machine (1), which physically illustrates the butterfly catastrophe, is described and analyzed.

Singer [10] defined a series Σxk in a Banach space X to be weakly p-unconditionally Cauchy if and only if Σλkxk converges in X for all λ∊lp, where 1 < p < ∞. For Banach spaces containing no subspace isomorphic to c0 Singer characterized such series as those for which

Motivated by a question of Hirzebruch on the possible topological types of cusp cross-sections of Hilbert modular varieties, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a manifold M to be diffeomorphic to a cusp cross-section of a Hilbert modular variety. Specialized to Hilbert modular surfaces, this proves that every Sol 3–manifold is diffeo morphic to a cusp cross-section of a (generalized) Hilbert modular surface. We also deduce an obstruction to geometric bounding in this setting. Consequently, there exist Sol 3–manifolds that cannot arise as a cusp cross-section of a 1–cusped nonsingular Hilbert modular surface.

We construct a Hamiltonian suspension for a given symplectomorphism which is the perturbation of a Poincaré map. This is especially useful for the conversion of perturbative results between symplectomorphisms and Hamiltonian flows in any dimension 2d. As an application, using known properties of area-preserving maps, we prove that for any Hamiltonian defined on a symplectic 4-manifold M and any point p ∈ M, there exists a C2-close Hamiltonian whose regular energy surface through p is either Anosov or contains a homoclinic tangency.

Although, as Carlitz claims, this formula may be derived directly from the definition of Jacobi polynomials, a probabilistic proof such as presented below may shed some new light on formula (1), as well as suggest probabilistic proofs for other similar formulas of Jacobi polynomials, e.g. those given by Manocha and Sharma in (4) and (5) and by Manocha in (3). In addition, it is quite possible that this method of proof will result in the derivation of some new formulas for Jacobi polynomials.
