We describe here the design, main parameters, and characteristics of a forevacuum-pressure plasma-cathode electron source based on a hollow-cathode discharge. The source generates a continuous focused electron beam with energy up to 30 keV and current up to 300 mA at a pressure of 10–50 Pa. The focused electron beam reaches a maximum power density of 106 W/cm2. The source utility has been demonstrated by its application for processing and cutting of ceramic.

We study the effect of magnetic field in an implosion process achieved by radiation. A time-varying sinusoidal magnetic field is seen to affect the continuous transition of space-like detonation to time-like detonation at the core of implosion region. The oscillating varying magnetic field has a significant effect in increasing the volume of the time-like detonation of the core of implosion and also modifies the time of the implosion process. This transition can have significant outcome both theoretically and experimentally in the areas of high-energy hadronization of quark–gluon plasma matter and inertial confinement fusion efforts of fuels.

The multi-petawatt (PW) lasers currently being built in Europe as part of the Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI) project will be capable of generating femtosecond light pulses of ultra-relativistic intensities (~1023–1024 W/cm2) that have been unattainable so far. Such laser pulses can be used for the production of high-energy ion beams with unique features that could be applied in various fields of scientific and technological research. In this paper, the prospect of producing ultra-intense (intensity ≥1020 W/cm2) ultra-short (pico- or femtosecond) high-energy ion beams using multi-PW lasers is outlined. The results of numerical studies on the acceleration of light (carbon) ions, medium-heavy (copper) ions and super-heavy (lead) ions driven by a femtosecond laser pulse of ultra-relativistic intensity, performed with the use of a multi-dimensional (2D3 V) particle-in-cell code, are presented, and the ion acceleration mechanisms and properties of the generated ion beams are discussed. It is shown that both in the case of light ions and in the case of medium-heavy and super-heavy ions, ultra-intense femtosecond multi-GeV ion beams with a beam intensity much higher (by a factor ~102) and ion pulse durations much shorter (by a factor ~104–105) than achievable presently in conventional radio frequency-driven accelerators can be produced at laser intensities of 1023 W/cm2 predicted for the ELI lasers. Such ion beams can open the door to new areas of research in high-energy density physics, nuclear physics and inertial confinement fusion.

Multi-MeV proton beams can be generated by irradiating thin solid foils with ultra-intense (>1018 W/cm2) short laser pulses. Several of their characteristics, such as high bunch charge and short pulse duration, make them a complementary alternative to conventional radio frequency-based accelerators. A potential material science application is the chemical analysis of cultural heritage (CH) artifacts. The complete chemistry of the bulk material (ceramics, metals) can be retrieved through sophisticated nuclear techniques such as particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE). Recently, the use of laser-generated proton beams was introduced as diagnostics in material science (laser-PIXE or laser-driven PIXE): Coupling laser-generated proton sources to conventional beam steering devices successfully enhances the capture and transport of the laser-accelerated beam. This leads to a reduction of the high divergence and broad energy spread at the source. The design of our hybrid beamline is composed of an energy selector, followed by permanent quadrupole magnets aiming for better control and manipulation of the final proton beam parameters. This allows tailoring both, mean proton energy and spot sizes, yet keeping the system compact. We performed a theoretical study optimizing a beamline for laser-PIXE applications. Our design enables monochromatizing the beam and shaping its final spot size. We obtain spot sizes ranging between a fraction of mm up to cm scale at a fraction of nC proton charge per shot. These results pave the way for a versatile and tunable laser-PIXE at a multi-Hz repetition rate using modern commercially available laser systems.

High-intensity electron linacs have severe space-charge effects that lead to the production of beam halo which degrade the beam quality. For a given charge per bunch, hollow beams have a weaker nonlinear space-charge force. In this paper, we have investigated the possibility of using hollow beam to control halo growth in linacs. We simulate the dynamics of such a beam in a 17 MeV radio frequency linac using ASTRA beam dynamics code and show that it experiences a smaller emittance growth as well as reduced beam halo. The results suggest that using a hollow beam, high charge per bunch could be propagated and accelerated in a radio frequency linac.

High inductive helical support provides a solution to controlling the alignment error of inner electrodes in magnetically insulated transmission lines (MITLs). Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations were performed to examine the current loss mechanism and the effects of structural parameters on electron flow in an MITL with a helical inductor. An empirical expression related to the ratio of electron current loss to anode current and the ratio of anode current to self-limited current was obtained. Electron current loss caused by helical inductor with different structures was displayed. The results indicate that the current loss in an MITL, near an inductive helical support, comprises both the inductor current and the electron current loss. The non-uniform structure and current of a helical inductor cause an abrupt change in the magnetic field near the helical support, which leads to anomalous behavior and current loss of electron flow. In addition, current loss in the inductive helical-supported MITL is negligible when the inductance of the support is sufficiently high. This work facilitates the estimation of electron current loss caused by the inductive helical support in MITLs.

Calculations of the spectral coefficients for X-ray absorption and spectral brightness's for X-ray radiation were performed for niobium Z-pinch plasma at the temperature of 1 keV and at different plasma densities to determine the compression degree where the spectral lines become indistinguishable. As known, traditional methods of temperature diagnostics of hot dense radiating plasmas are based on analysis of the spectral line shape in dependence on plasma temperature and density. In this case, the interval of photon radiation energies is used, where the spectral lines are well distinguishable in an experiment. On the other hand, Z-pinch plasma has high compression, and an increase of plasma density leads to the deformation of the spectral line shape because of Doppler broadening, Stark broadening, and so-called “additional” broadening of spectral lines that take place in a quantum statistical ensemble of plasma ions and atoms. The traditional method of temperature diagnostics becomes impossible and different methods, which do not use spectral line characteristics, should be applied. The aim of this paper is to determine the density border where the spectral lines become indistinguishable. Important features of the quantum mechanical model, which is known as ion model of plasma, and which is used for calculations in the presented paper, are considered and discussed. A brief review of the theoretical models that have been earlier developed to calculate the radiative opacity characteristics of hot dense plasma is presented as well.

A novel idea is presented in this paper to simulation, design, and feasibility of making a machine in order to produce nitrogen 13 (N-13) at a much lower cost than conventional medical applications. In a plasma focus device, only 0.02% of the generated ions have more than 1 MeV energy. In this paper, using a new idea we have tried to find a solution to increase the energy of deuterium ions to produce N-13. To achieve this, a series of magnetic lenses has been used to focus and guide the ions. To increase the ion energy, a small linear accelerator has been designed using a TM010 waveguide. The accelerator waveguide is also designed and optimized to have the highest impedance matching and maximum power transmission. Eventually, low-energy ions that are transmitted by magnetic lenses accelerate in the waveguide electric field and their energy increases significantly. The collision of these energetic ions with graphite target produce N-13.

Nonlinear propagation of ion acoustic waves has been studied in unmagnetized quantum (degenerate) plasma in the presence of an ion beam using the one-dimensional quantum hydrodynamic model. The Korteweg–de Vries (K–dV) equation has been derived by using the reductive perturbation technique. The solution of ion acoustic solitary waves is obtained from the K–dV equation. The theoretical results have been analyzed numerically for different values of plasma parameters and the results are presented graphically. It is seen that the formation and structure of solitary waves are significantly affected by the ion beam in quantum plasma. The solitary waves will be compressive or rarefactive depending upon the values of velocity, concentration, and temperature of the ion beam. The critical value of ion beam density for the nonexistence of solitary wave has been numerically estimated, and its variation with velocity and temperature of ion beam has been discussed graphically. The results are new and would be very useful for understanding the beam–plasma interactions and the formation of nonlinear wave structures in dense quantum plasma.

Irradiation of gases with intense pulses of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) can result in the formation of low-temperature plasmas. During the time of irradiation, various non-thermal processes driven by the EUV photons and photoelectrons take place, leading to the creation of excited states of atoms and ions. Fast relaxation of these states should result in EUV emission within a time comparable to the driving EUV pulse. On the other hand, from our earlier works, a time duration of the emission in an optical range is over an order of magnitude longer. It can be thus expected that the time of EUV emission can be also relatively long. In this work, time-resolved measurements of the EUV emission from low-temperature plasmas induced in He, Ne, and Ar gases were performed. Due to a low intensity of the emitted radiation, a specially prepared detection system, based on an EUV collector and an EUV sensitive photodiode, was employed. In all cases, a time duration of the EUV emission was much longer compared with the driving EUV pulse. Time profiles of the corresponding signals were specific for particular gases. In case of He and Ne plasmas, these time profiles varied with initial densities of gases to be ionized. The corresponding dependence was especially visible in case of plasmas induced in helium. In case of Ar plasmas, such dependence was not revealed.

Two-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations have been used to investigate the interaction between a laser pulse and a foil exposed to an external strong longitudinal magnetic field. Compared with that in the absence of the external magnetic field, the divergence of proton with the magnetic field in radiation pressure acceleration (RPA) regimes has improved remarkably due to the restriction of the electron transverse expansion. During the RPA process, the foil develops into a typical bubble-like shape resulting from the combined action of transversal ponderomotive force and instabilities. However, the foil prefers to be in a cone-like shape by using the magnetic field. The dependence of proton divergence on the strength of magnetic field has been studied, and an optimal magnetic field of nearly 60 kT is achieved in these simulations.

An analytical formalism of laser absorption in a nanorod embedded dielectric surface has been developed. Nanorods lie in the plane of the dielectric, in the form of a planar array. A laser, impinged on them with an electric field perpendicular to the lengths of the nanorods, imparts oscillatory velocity to nanorod electrons. As the free electrons of a nanorod are displaced, a space charge field is developed in the nanorod that exerts restoration force on the electrons and their drift velocity shows a resonance at ${\rm \omega} = {\rm \omega} _{\rm p}/\sqrt 2 $, where ωp denotes the plasma frequency of free electrons inside the nanorod. It is inhibited by collisions and nanorod expansion. At the resonance, the electrons are efficiently heated by the laser and laser energy is strongly absorbed, resulting in significant reduction in laser transmissivity. The transmissivity decreases with laser intensity.

A fundamental problem for the realization of laser fusion through the implosion of a spherical target is Kidder's E−1/6 law, where E is the energy needed for ignition, proportional to the 6th power of the ratio R/R0, where R0 and R are the initial and final implosion radii, respectively. This law implies that the ignition energy is very sensitive to the ratio R0/R, or vice versa, the ratio R0/R is very insensitive to the energy input, with R0/R limited by the Rayleigh–Taylor instability. According to still classified data of the Centurion–Halite experiment at the Nevada Test Site, ignition would require an energy of ${\rm E}\simeq 50\,{\rm MJ}$, 25 times larger than the 2 MJ laser at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) reported in the New York Times. This means that even a tenfold increase from 2 to 20 MJ would only decrease the R/R0 ratio by an insignificant factor of 10−1/6 ≃ 0.7. To overcome this problem, it is proposed that the spherical target is replaced with a hollowed-out, rapidly rotating, cm-size ferromagnetic target, accelerated by a rotating traveling magnetic wave to a rotational velocity of ~1 km/s, at the limit of its tensile strength. In a rotating reference system, the general theory of relativity predicts the occurrence of negative gravitational field masses in the center of rotation, with their source located in the Coriolis force field. The density of this negative gravitational field mass can be larger than the magnitude of the positive mass density of a neutron star. The repulsive gravitational force causes the centrifugal force. For a magnetized plasma placed in the rapidly spinning, hollowed-out target chamber, this repulsive force can be balanced by the magnetic force generated by thermomagnetic currents of the Nernst effect. Such a configuration does not suffer from the Rayleigh–Taylor instability, but becomes a small magnetohydrodynamic generator, amplifying the magnetic field to values about equal to those of the Nernst effect, axially confining the plasma. By placing the spinning target in the center of a lithium vortex, the fusion neutrons absorbed in the vortex can breed tritium, and at the same time remove heat from the target chamber to sustain the Nernst effect. A hot spot is thereby produced in the target chamber, which launches a thermonuclear burn wave into a cylindrical deuterium–tritium configuration. With the stability of a rapidly rotating target greatly increased, and the range of 10 MeV electrons in the wall of the cm-size ferromagnetic target, an intense 10 MeV relativistic electron beam drawn from a 10 MJ Marx generator should be sufficient to implode the target for thermonuclear ignition.

Spark gaps are often used to commute energy in the discharge of a capacitive storage to a load. In some applications, a unipolar pulse is not feasible, and an oscillatory (underdamped sinusoidal) regime must be realized for the discharge of the capacitor bank. Spark gaps, which were developed for unipolar discharge, cannot be directly employed in an under-damped (oscillatory) regime since at the transition of the current through zero, the spark channel could stop motion and ignite in the following half period. This work has two main objectives: (i) To develop and test a simulation model of spark channel motion in linear rail geometry, which must be valid for both the oscillatory and unipolar regimes of capacitor bank discharge; and (ii) to investigate arc motion and electrode heating, depending on the current and charge transfer, over a wide range of operation. A self-consistent treatment of plasma motion and electrode heating (taking into account the radiation of a plasma channel) is applied in the present paper, and it is shown that radiation can significantly impact on the temperature of the electrodes. Electrode ablation and the temperature dependence of the main thermal parameters are also taken into account. Stainless steel (Cr/Ni/Ti 18/10/0.6÷0.8), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), tungsten (W), and molybdenum (Mo) are used here as electrode materials since these materials are widely used for the manufacture of electrodes. The results of numerical calculations are compared with experimental results, and conditions are defined for reduced electrode erosion.

The effects of the phase variation, the evolution of the electron beam, the evolution of the radiation intensity, and the higher-order modes due to waveguides on a free-electron laser (FEL) oscillator have been analyzed by using two electron beams of different energies based on the proposed FEL facility which is to be operated in the far-infrared and infrared regions. The three-dimensional (3D) effects on a FEL oscillator due to waveguides and higher-order modes were studied using an extended 3D FEL code with two electron beams that we have developed. The effects of the variation on the amplitude of radiation on the electron beam's emittance and energy spreads were also calculated in the case of waveguide for multi-particle and multi-pass numbers by using a new 3D code. The phase variation, the variation in the beam envelope, the evolution of the amplitude, and power were calculated for the fundamental mode. The results were compared with those of the higher-order modes of the wiggler for various TE and TM modes for determining the FEL's performance which is required for high-quality electron beams.

In this paper, the dependence of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) threshold on the sinusoidal modulated properties of pump pulse is studied. A 527-nm-wavelength, 5 ns square laser pulse with sinusoidal temporal modulation is used as the pump source, and a 600 mm liquid heavy fluorocarbon material FC-40 is used as the Brillouin medium. The numerically calculated results indicate that the SBS threshold increases with the increase of both temporal intensity modulation index and modulation frequency of the pump pulse. However, when the intensity distortion criterion is below 30% or the duration of modulation peaks below three times the phonon lifetime, the SBS threshold tends to remain stable. The numerical results provide assistance to judge the SBS threshold for unsmoothed pump pulses, especially for high power laser applications.

Two-photon absorption (TPA) of Au-ion irradiated glasses in the femtosecond regime has been analyzed by an open-aperture Z scan technique. Three types of glasses, namely GIL49, BK7, and Glass B were irradiated by using 1700 keV Au+ ion beams. Samples were post-annealed at 600°C for 5 h. Penetration depth and distribution of Au+ ions having 1700 keV energy within glass substrates were estimated by transport of ions in matter (TRIM) simulations. Detailed calculations with full-damage cascades were performed for each sample, taking into account the chemical composition of glass substrates. TRIM results reveal that there is no significant change in ion range, straggling, and ion distribution with the change in the substrate composition. However, Z scan results showed a difference in TPA coefficients for all three glasses. Extent of crosslinking within each of irradiated sample, owing to its chemical composition, may have affected their TPA coefficients.
