In this paper we investigate subtractive varieties of algebras that are congruence quasi-orderable. Though this concept has its origin in abstract algebraic logic, it seems to be worth investigating in a purely algebraic fashion. Besides clarifying the algebraic meaning of this notion, we obtain several structure theorems about such varieties. Also several examples are provided to illustrate the theory.

The representation theory of categories is used to embed each promonoidal monad in a monoidal biclosed monad. The existence of a promonoidal structure on the ordinary Eilenberg- Moore category generated by a promonoidal monad is examined. Several results by previous authors (notably A. Kock and F. E. J. Linton) are reproved and extended.

The spectral duality theory of H.-E. Porst and M. B. Wischnewsky is examined in more generality, and examples based on topological fields are described.

An aggregate consisting of a large number of small, equal, hard spheres might be expected to behave like ordinary sand; in this article therefore an attempt is made to find the porperties that will be exhibited by this model, and in particular to find what stresses the sand will withstand without collapsing.

We prove optimal radially weighted L2-norm inequalities for the Fourier extension operator associated to the unit sphere in ℝn. Such inequalities valid at all scales are well understood. The purpose of this short paper is to establish certain more delicate single-scale versions of these.

Let S, T1,… Tk be finite semigroups and Ψ: S → Ti, be embeddings. When C[S] is semisimple, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the semigroup amalgam (T1,…, Tk; S) to be embeddable in a finite semigroup. As a consequence we show that if S is a finite semigroup with C[S] semisimple, then S is an amalgamation base for the class of finite semigroups if and only if the principal ideals of S are linearly ordered. Our proof uses both the theory of representations by transformations and the theory of matrix representations as developed by Clifford, Munn and Ponizovskii

The Moore-Penrose inverse of a general bordered matrix is found under various conditions. The Moore-Penrose inverses obtained by Hall and Hartwig (1976) are shown to be special cases of these more general results.

A balanced tournament design, BTD(n), defined on a 2n—set V is an arrangement of the () distinct unordered pairs of the elements of V into an n × 2n − 1 array such that (1) every element of V is contained in precisely one cell of each column, and (2) every element of V is contained in at most two cells of each row. In this paper, we investigate the existence of balanced tournament designs with a pair of almost orthogonal resolutions. These designs can be used to construct doubly resolvable (ν, 3, 2)- BIBD s and, in our smallest applications, have been used to construct previously unknown doubly resolvable (ν, 3, 2)- B I B D s.

In this note we present a general Jordan-Hölder type theorem for modular lattices and apply it to obtain various (old and new) versions of the Jordan-Hölder Theorem for finite groups.

In this paper, we further study Tate cohomology of modules over a commutative ring with respect to semidualizing modules using the ideals of Sather-Wagstaff et al. [‘Tate cohomology with respect to semidualizing modules’, J. Algebra 324 (2010), 2336–2368]. In particular, we prove a balance result for the Tate cohomology ${\widehat{\mathrm{Ext} }}^{n} $ for any $n\in \mathbb{Z} $. This result complements the work of Sather-Wagstaff et al., who proved that the result holds for any $n\geq 1$. We also discuss some vanishing properties of Tate cohomology.

We develop a theory of ergodicity for unbounded functions ø: J → X, where J is a subsemigroup of a locally compact abelian group G and X is a Banach space. It is assumed that ø is continuous and dominated by a weight w defined on G. In particular, we establish total ergodicity for the orbits of an (unbounded) strongly continuous representation T: G → L(X) whose dual representation has no unitary point spectrum. Under additional conditions stability of the orbits follows. To study spectra of functions, we use Beurling algebras L1w(G) and obtain new characterizations of their maximal primary ideals, when w is non-quasianalytic, and of their minimal primary ideals, when w has polynomial growth. It follows that, relative to certain translation invariant function classes , the reduced Beurling spectrum of ø is empty if and only if ø ∈ . For the zero class, this is Wiener's tauberian theorem.

It is shown that a variety ν has distributive congruence lattices if and only if the intersection of two principal congruence relations is definable by equations involving terms with parameters. The nature of the terms involved then provides a useful classification of congruence distributive varieties. In particular, the classification puts into proper perspective two stronger properties. A variety is said to have the Principal Intersection Property if the intersection of any two principal congruence relations is principal, or the Compact Intersection Property if the intersection of two compact congruence relations is compact. For non-congruence-distributive varieties, it is shown that some useful constuctions are nevertheless possible.

In this note we give a basis for the radical of the group algebra of a p-nilpotent group over a field of characteristic p in terms of the ordinary representation theory of the group. We use our result to calculate the exponent of the radical for such a group.

We establish an extension of the Banach–Stone theorem to a class of isomorphisms more general than isometries in a noncompact framework. Some applications are given. In particular, we give a canonical representation of some (not necessarily linear) operators between products of function spaces. Our results are established for an abstract class of function spaces included in the space of all continuous and bounded functions defined on a complete metric space.

This paper is devoted to dualization of paracompactness to the coarse category via the concept of $R$-disjointness. Property A of Yu can be seen as a coarse variant of amenability via partitions of unity and leads to a dualization of paracompactness via partitions of unity. On the other hand, finite decomposition complexity of Guentner, Tessera, and Yu and straight finite decomposition complexity of Dranishnikov and Zarichnyi employ $R$-disjointness as the main concept. We generalize both concepts to that of countable asymptotic dimension and our main result shows that it is a subclass of spaces with Property A. In addition, it gives a necessary and sufficient condition for spaces of countable asymptotic dimension to be of finite asymptotic dimension.

It is well-known that quasi-Frobenius rings are characterized by the property that all propective right modules are injective, as well as by the property that all injective right modules are projective. Similarly, either the property that every quasi-injective or that every quasi-injective is quasi-projective characterizes uniserial rings. Oshiro has given similar characterizations for generalized uniserial rings. The purpose of this paper is to characterize rings for which continuous right modules are discrete. We show that these rings are precisely the uniserial rings. The property that every discrete module is continuous is also investigated.

By a fundamental theorem of Brauer every irreducible character of a finite group G can be written in the field Q(εm) of mth roots of unity where m is the exponent of G. Is it always possible to find a matrix representation over its ring Z[εm] of integers? In the present paper it is shown that this holds true provided it is valid for the quasisimple groups. The reduction to such groups relies on a useful extension theorem for integral representations. Iwasawa theory on class groups of cyclotomic fields gives evidence that the answer is at least affirmative when the exponent is replaced by the order, and provides for a general qualitative result.

The purpose of this note is to derive an alternative expression to that given in Lemma 1 below (due to Hsu, and to von Bahr) for the absolute moments of a random variable, in terms of the characteristic function.

With K are associated n positive constants λ1, λ2,…,λn, the ‘successive minima of K’ and n linearly independent lattice points (points with integer coordinates) P1, P2, …, Pn (not necessarily unique) such that all lattice points in the body λ,K are linearly dependent on P1, P2, …, Pj-1. We investigate when the boundary of a multiply connected wandering domain of an entire function is uniformly perfect. We give a general criterion implying that it is not uniformly perfect. This criterion applies in particular to examples of multiply connected wandering domains given by Baker. We also provide examples of infinitely connected wandering domains whose boundary is uniformly perfect.
