1. In differentiating between species of snails various ratios of shell dimensions are frequently used as biological constants descriptive of the species. Some of the ratios commonly used are: length to breadth (L/B), length to length of body-whorl (L/W), length to length of shell aperture (L/l), and length of shell aperture to its breadth (1/b). Mean and extreme values of these ratios are given for small samples of five species of Limnaea.

2. In L. palustris the least variable of these simple ratios is L/W and the next best is L/l. Statistics are given for the distributions of these two ratios.

3. Data collected by Mozley are used to show that in L. palustris the ratio L/l (at least) is subject to considerable local variation, a fact which detracts from its value as a species constant.

Laboratory ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) were each inoculated with 500 larvae of a strain of Trichinella spiralis that had been passaged in mice for many generations. The recovery of adult worms from ferrets on Days 4 and 7 of infection represented a mean of 32% of the inoculum, with most of the worms being in the anterior three quarters of the small intestine. Larvae subsequently became encysted in the ferret musculature, with the diaphragm alone yielding as many as 5,750 larvae upon digestion.

For comparative purposes, mice were each inoculated with 200 T. spiralis from the same batch of larvae. The recovery of adult worms from mice represented a mean of 54% of the inoculum. An abrupt decline in worm population, typical of infections in the mouse, was observed in both mouse and ferret hosts; in neither species had the decline begun on Day 7 of infection, but it had clearly begun by Day 11 and was essentially ended by Day 14.

Looss (1898) described a trematode, Distomum reniferum, from the intestine of a turtle, Trionyx nilotica. Later, while reviewing the genus Distomum of Retzius, 1782, the same author (1899) described a new form, Astia impleta, from the intestine of Tetrodon fahaka and also transferred his former species, Distomum reniferum as a type species of this new genus Astia. The generic name was subsequently changed to Astiotrema Looss, 1900 and both the species described originally under Astia are now included under this new name. Odhner (1911) redescribed both the species and added considerably to our account of these forms. Other species have since been added to the genus Astiotrema. The latest addition to our knowledge of the genus Astiotrema is that by Mehra (1931) who has given an interesting account of two new species from the tortoises of Allahabad, and has, besides, given a very useful table and key for the identification of the various species of the genus under review. The present paper deals with an account of another new species of the genus obtained at Lucknow, from the intestine of a tortoise, Chitra indica, from the river Gomti.

Treatment of Schistosoma haematobium (Nigerian strain) in hamsters with a single dose of 40 mg/kg of Astiban caused a reduction in the number of S1, S2, and S3 vitelline cells and an increase in S4 cells. Following seven daily doses of the drug, a marked reduction in S1 cells and a complete loss of S2 and S3 cells occurred such that 95% of the cells were S4 cells, all of which were structurally abnormal. Coagulation and disintegration of the protein granules of the vitelline droplets occurred with increase in lipid droplets, swelling of the nuclear membrane and an increase in cytosegresomes. Blebbing of the tegument in both sexes occurred following a single treatment and vacuolation of the basal infolds and alterations to the mitochondria also resulted, but severe erosion of the tegument was rare even following repeated drug treatment. Damage to the gastrodermis was severe with the development of autophagic vacuoles containing whorls of myelin and sequestered portions of damaged tissue. The degree of damage increased with the number of drug treatments.

Out of a large number of diseased potatoes sent by a merchant to this Institute and to the Ministry of Agriculture Pathological Laboratory, Harpenden, suspected of eelworm disease due to Tylenchus dipsaci, only one tuber was found by Mr. Buckhurst of the latter laboratory to contain eelworms; all the others, although presenting a naked-eye appearance extremely like that shown by tubers attacked by T. dipsaci, were entirely negative. This tuber was sent to the writer for his opinion on the nema-todes living in it with the result that what appears to be a new genus has been found. It resembles members of the genera Tylenchus and Aphelenchus in that it has a mouth stylet with swellings at its base and might at first sight be mistaken for a representative of one of these genera, a fact which renders a description of it all the more necessary, but differs from them in several morphological details.

The effects of water temperature on the ability of Diplostomum spathaceum miracida to infect and establish patent infections in Lymnaea peregra and L. stagnalis were investigated. Snails were infected over a range of temperatures (6–20°C) and kept thereafter at 20°C or were infected at 20°C and kept at either 14, 20, or 25°C. Infection success was determined after 8 weeks by either observing cercarial shedding or examining snail viscera for sporocysts. The establishment of miracidia declined at lower water temperatures despite maintenance for 8 weeks at 20°C while exposure of snails to miracidia at 20°C and maintenance at different temperatures had little apparent effect. Infection success under these conditions was related more to the numbers of miracidia to which the snails were exposed. However, under this latter experimental regime, the time taken for the infection to become patent clearly depended upon maintenance temperature.

1. The morphology of the infective larvae of Cardiofilaria nilesi and Pelecitus sp. in Mansonia crassipes is described in some detail, and sex differences have been noted in them.

2. Infective larvae of C. nilesi can be distinguished from those of Wuchereria bancrofti by the form of the caudal papillae.

3. A brief description is given of four unidentified larvae from other wild-caught mosquitoes in Ceylon.

Two species belonging to the Nematode genus Physaloptera have up to the present been reported from Man; P. caucasica v. Linstow, 1902, which has been obtained on one occasion only from the Caucasus, and P. mordens Leiper, 1908, which has been reported on several occasions from Man and Monkeys from Central Africa. Until quite recently the only account of the former species was that of v. Linstow, and from this it was quite plain that the two species were distinct. Schulz (1926), however, has had the opportunity of re-examining the types of P. caucasica and on the basis of his excellent descriptions and figures it is possible to make a closer comparison between it and P. mordens. Schulz was able to rectify several inaccuracies in v. Linstow's description, and he came to the conclusion that the two species were very closely related, the only difference between the two being that in P. caucasica there is in addition to the three large teeth on each lip also a series of small teeth between and exterior to them on the inner face of the lip, which teeth are absent in P. mordens; also that the former species was smaller than the latter, 14–24 mm. to 29–34 mm. for the male and 24 mm. to 41–100 mm. for the female respectively, and that the eggs of the former were larger.

Some experiments were carried out on the migration route of the parasite N. brasiliensis. The infective larvae migrate to the lungs via the lymphatic system and not by the blood stream. The larvae reached the lymphatic gland draining the site of infection from 12 to 17 hours after normal exposure to infection and the lungs from 18 hours onwards.

Investigators up to the time of Monticelli (1891), with the exception of Weinland (1858), considered the proteocephalan group of fish cestodes to belong to the genus Taenia. It was Weinland (1858) who removed them from this genus, and erected the genus Proteocephalus for them.

Linstow (1891), was the first to point out that the fish species made a closely related group within the genus Taenia on account of certain constantly occurring characters. In the same year, Monticelli pointed out that in these fish “Taenias”, as then known, some showed marked differences from the rest, notably in the cortical position of the testes, and that these justified their separation as the genus Tetracotylus.

The cephalic end of the type species of pharyngodonid genera Travnema and Cosmoxynemoides, T. travnema Pereira, 1938 and C. aguirrei Travassos, 1949, parasites of Brazilian freshwater fishes, was studied by scanning electron microscopy. The mouth aperture of Travnema was found to be circular, surrounded by four cephalic papillae and two lateral amphids and the cuticle of the cephalic end had a conspicuous dense sculpture. On the other hand, the mouth aperture of Cosmoxynemoides was triangular, surrounded by three lip-like elevations covering the whole surface of the relatively flat cephalic extremity, each with two inner lobes separated one from another by a short groove; the lip-like elevations bore four medium-sized, kidney-shaped cephalic papillae and two minute amphids (two papillae on the dorsal elevation and one papilla and one amphid on each of two ventrolateral elevations); the cuticle of the cephalic end was smooth. Both species were noted for the absence of oral lamellae and the presence of lateral alae. Both genera are listed in the family Pharyngodonidae but Travnema (and also Hakynema), due to its morphological peculiarities, is considered to represent a distinct subfamily Travnematinae within the Pharyngodonidae. The finding of both T. travnema and C. aguirrei in the characid fish Astyanax bimaculatus lacustris represents new host records.

Leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) and cathepsin L1 (CL1) are important enzymes for the pathogenesis and physiology of Fasciola hepatica. These enzymes were analysed in silico to design a chimeric protein containing the most antigenic sequences of LAP (GenBank; AAV59016.1; amino acids 192–281) and CL1 (GenBank CAC12806.1; amino acids 173–309). The cloned 681-bp chimeric fragment (rFhLAP-CL1) contains 270 bp from LAP and 411 bp from CL1, comprising three epitopes, DGRVVHLKY (amino acids 54–62) from LAP, VTGYYTVHSGSEVELKNLV (amino acids 119–137) and YQSQTCLPF (amino acids 161–169) from CL1. The ~25 kDa rFhLAP-CL1 chimeric protein was expressed from the pET15b plasmid in the Rosetta (DE3) Escherichia coli strain. The chimeric protein rFhLAP-CL1, which showed antigenic and immunogenic properties, was recognized in Western blot assays using F. hepatica-positive bovine sera, and induced strong, specific antibody responses following immunization in rabbits. The newly generated chimeric protein may be used as a diagnostic tool for detection of antibodies against F. hepatica in bovine sera and as an immunogen to induce protection against bovine fasciolosis.

The pathogenesis of angiostrongyliasis, resulting from Angiostrongylus cantonensis invasion of the human central nervous system, remains elusive. Anthelmintics are usually used to kill worms, although dead worms in the brain may cause severe inflammation which will lead to central nervous system damage. Therefore, combination therapy with anthelmintics and anti-inflammatory drugs in the treatment of human angiostrongyliasis needs further study. To evaluate the efficacy of albendazole combined with a marine fungal extract (m2-9) in A. cantonensis infection, BALB/c mice infected by the third-stage larvae of A. cantonensis were divided into three groups: mice treated with albendazole or m2-9 alone or in combination from day 5 post-inoculation (PI). Several efficacy parameters were recorded, including weight change, worm recovery, neurological function, behavioural analysis, eosinophil and leucocyte counts. The results showed that combination therapy increased body weight, reduced worm burden, improved learning ability, memory and action, decreased neurological dysfunction and leucocyte response in these mice. The combination of albendazole and m2-9 treatment significantly decreased leucocyte response and increased the frequency of rearing, compared to infected mice treated with either drug alone. Therefore, m2-9 is a natural product with potentially significant therapeutic value for angiostrongyliasis and is worthy of further study.

A study of nematode (Heligmosomum costellatum) prevalence in the common vole (Microtus arvalis) population was performed in 2002 and 2003 in an agricultural region of southern Moravia, Czech Republic. The influence of the trapping date, body weight, age, gender and reproduction of the common vole on the prevalence of the larvae of H. costellatum encapsulated in the stomach wall was examined. Of 503 common voles examined, 27.6% were H. costellatum positive. The prevalence of H. costellatum in the common vole population was influenced mainly by the weight, trapping date, year and reproductive state, as well as by the interactions between year and gender and between year and reproductive state. The influence of age was weak. The most infected common vole groups were the older, heavier and already reproducing females captured from April to August and all voles captured in 2002. In general, parasite prevalence seems to be dependent on the population parameters of the host species. However, the H. costellatum prevalence study in a single common vole population was not sufficient to fully describe and explain the nematode–host interactions.

The efficacy of eight essential oils (EOs) (Solidago canadensis, Eucalyptus globulus, Pelargonium asperum, Ocimum basilicum, Thymus vulgaris, Mentha piperita, Cymbopogon citratus and Cymbopogon martinii) against gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) was evaluated using eggs collected from naturally infected cattle and cultured infective larvae (L3). The larvae species cultured from the faecal samples and subjected to two in vitro tests were Haemonchus spp. (55.5%), Trichostrongylus spp. (28.0%), Cooperia spp. (15.0%) and Oesophagostomum spp. (1.5%). The genus of EO Cymbopogon (C. citratus and C. martinii) showed the highest anthelmintic activity at the dose of 8.75 mg/ml, for the egg hatch, the larval migration and mortality assays. All of the EOs tested reduced egg hatching to rates <19.0%, compared to the controls (water and water + Tween 20) that had rates >92.0%. Cymbopogon citratus and C. martinii treatments resulted in 11.6 and 8.1% egg hatch, had the lowest migration of larvae through sieves, 60.5 and 54.9%, and the highest mortality rates, 63.3 and 56.3%, respectively. Dose–response tests showed that EO from C. citratus had the lowest larval LC50 and migration inhibition concentration (IC50) values of 3.89 and 7.19 mg/ml, respectively, compared to two other EOs (C. martinii and O. basilicum). The results suggest that EOs from the genus Cymbopogon can be interesting candidates for nematode control in cattle, although it may prove challenging to deliver concentrations to the gastrointestinal tract sufficient to effectively manage GINs.

Conventional identification of Paragonimus species and their natural definitive hosts is based on the morphological features of adult parasites isolated from the lungs of wild mammalian hosts. However, wild animals are protected by strict regulations and sampling is not always possible. Recently, molecular techniques have been developed to identify the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences of Paragonimus eggs in faeces/sputum of human patients. Also, mammalian hosts can be identified using the D-loop sequence of mitochondrial DNA in faecal samples. In this study, we used molecular techniques on faeces from wild animals collected in Da Krong Nature Reserve, Quang Tri province, central Vietnam, where Paragonimus metacercariae are highly prevalent in mountain crabs, to identify Paragonimus species and their natural definitive hosts. The results indicated that wild cats, Prionailurus bengalensis, were infected with at least three different Paragonimus species, P. westermani, P. skrjabini and P. heterotremus. Because all of these species can infect humans in Asian countries, human paragonimiasis should be considered in this area.

Among about 50 nominal Paragonimus species, Paragonimus proliferus is rather a rare species, found only in Yunnan province, China, until our recent discovery of this species in Lai Chau province, northern Vietnam close to Yunnan, China. Here we add Quang Binh province, central Vietnam as a new endemic area of P. proliferus. Large excysted metacercariae found in mountainous crabs, Potamiscus tannanti, were morphologically identified as P. proliferus, which was confirmed further by molecular analyses. Second internal transcribed spacer (ITS2) sequences of the P. proliferus population in Quang Binh province were completely (100%) identical with those of P. proliferus populations in Lai Chau province, northern Vietnam and Yunnan province, China. However, cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) gene sequences of Quang Binh population were significantly different (5.6%) from that of previously reported northern Vietnam and Yunnan, China populations. A phylogenetic tree revealed that all CO1 sequences of P. proliferus Quang Binh population formed a distinct group, which was clustered with northern Vietnam and Yunnan, China populations with the bootstrap value of 75%. This is the first record of the genetically variant population of P. proliferus, distribution of which is geographically remote from the previously reported endemic areas in the border between northern Vietnam and Yunnan, China, suggesting that P. proliferus may be much more widely distributed in the Indochina peninsula (or South-East Asia) than expected.

The general outlines of the life history of Taenia pisiformis (Bloch 1780) in the dog and the rabbit have long been well known. The following reinvestigation of the early stages of the development of Cysticercus pisiformis in experimental rabbits was undertaken with the primary objective of checking or refuting the “division” of the Cysticercus described by Moniez in his classical monograph on the Cysticerci, published in 1880.

An abattoir study was carried out between May and October 2016 to determine the parasitic causes of organ condemnation during meat inspection and to evaluate the attendant financial losses in Fako abattoirs, in the South-West region of Cameroon. Organs (liver, lungs, heart, tongue, kidney, spleen and intestine) were examined at meat inspection following standard procedures and the financial loss was estimated by considering the total weight of condemned organs and the price per kilogram of marketable organs, obtained from the local market. The organs of 1472 cattle were examined, of which 357 (24.38%) were condemned. The organs condemned because of parasitic infestations were the liver (333) and small intestine (24), and the infections were caused by flukes of Fasciola sp. and proglottids of Moniezia sp., respectively. Hydatid cysts and cysticerci were absent. The prevalence of fasciolosis and monieziosis was 22.62% and 1.63%, respectively. Condemnation deprived the region of 665.457 kg of meat, with an associated financial loss of CFA 1,330,902 (USD 2505), during the study period. Parasitic diseases worsen the food insecurity situation as they result in the withdrawal of a considerable amount of meat from the food chain. Fasciolosis, the leading parasitic cause of meat condemnation in Fako, is also zoonotic. It is therefore important that effective control measures are implemented countrywide against this parasitosis.

A total of 850 pre-adult Galba truncatula (shell height, 4 mm), originating from four French snail populations differing in shell height at the adult stage (from 6.5 to 12 mm), were individually subjected at 20°C to single-miracidium infections with Fascioloides magna. At day 75 post-exposure, the surviving snails were dissected, and rediae and cercariae were counted. Snail groups differed in shell growth during the experiment: from 1.8 ± 0.4 mm in group A up to 4.0 ± 1.1 mm in group D. The prevalence of F. magna infection, the numbers of free rediae and cercariae significantly increased together with increasing growth of infected snails during the experiment. Group A produced 1–6 first-generation rediae per snail and the mean daughter redia production ranged from 7.5 second-generation rediae (when a single first generation per snail developed) to 2.3 (6 first-generation rediae per snail). In contrast, up to ten first-generation rediae were noted in group D, and each mother redia gave daughter rediae with averages ranging from 1.5 (ten first-generation rediae per snail) to 13 (a single first generation per snail). In conclusion, the development of F. magna in G. truncatula exhibited both inter- and intrapopulation variability, where the development of rediae and cercariae was positively correlated with snail growth.
