Since Blanc created the genus Streptopharagus in 1912 for the reception of a nematode parasite from the stomach of Macacus cynomolgus (India ?) which he named S. armatus, three papers have appeared from different sources, each of which deals with what its author took to be examples of S. armatus Blanc. The first of these papers is by Vevers (1922), in which he records and figures some specimens obtained from Macacus nemestrinus (India). The second is by Baylis (1923), describing and figuring specimens obtained from Papio langheldi (Tanganyika Territory). The third is by Mönnig (1924), in which specimens obtained from Papio porcarius and Cercopithecus pygerythrus (Transvaal) are described and figured.

Assessing fish stocks has important implications for fisheries management and conservation biology. Gurnards are marine demersal fish that commonly occur in the Mediterranean, but their population in this region remains to be quantified. This study examines the population structure of the longfin gurnard Chelidonichthys obscurus (Walbaum, 1792) in waters off eastern Tunisia, using morphometry and parasite assemblages. A total of 134 fish are investigated from two studied zones – the Gulf of Hammamet and the Gulf of Gabès. Discriminant analysis is used to compare gurnard populations in the two studied zones using 13 morphometric characters and the infection parameters of seven parasites. Morphometric analysis reveals strong spatial variations between the studied zones, providing evidence for the existence of an ecological differentiation along the eastern Tunisian coast. Mahalanobis distances show that body height, pectoral fin length and first dorsal fin length are the most salient morphometric characters for determining the position of samples from the Gulf of Gabès. The effectiveness of using parasites to study longfin gurnard stocks is uncertain. The use of short-lived parasites as biological tags is questionable, at least in the present case. Future research, based on complementary approaches such as otolith microchemistry and genetics, may improve our understanding of the global stock structure of longfin gurnard to suitably inform regional organizations involved in fisheries management.

Knowledge of endemic helminths in a resource-limited country such as Nigeria is essential for their diagnosis, treatment and cost-effective control. In the present study, the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) guideline was employed to determine the prevalence and geographical distribution of zoonotic helminths in food animals slaughtered in Nigerian abattoirs between 1970 and 2016. Pooled prevalence estimate (PPE) was determined by the random-effects model while heterogeneity was evaluated using the Cochran's Q-test. Results from 42 eligible studies reported across 19 Nigerian states revealed 85,466 cases of zoonotic helminths from 3,771,832 slaughtered food animals. Overall PPE was 2.27% (95% confidence interval (CI): 2.25, 2.28). PPEs for sub-groups ranged between 0.51% (95% CI: 0.46, 0.56) and 18.05% (95% CI: 17.12, 19.01) across regions, hosts, study periods and diagnostic methods. Ascaris suum had the highest pooled prevalence of 25.46% (95% CI: 24.04, 26.92). Overall prevalence estimates for cestodes, nematodes and trematodes were 0.60% (95% CI: 0.59, 0.61), 21.51% (95% CI: 20.73, 22.30) and 1.86% (95% CI: 1.84, 1.87), respectively. A high degree of heterogeneity 99.97% (95% CI: 2.25, 2.28, P: 0.000) was observed. Zoonotic helminths were prevalent in slaughtered food animals, with higher prevalence estimates in the north–central region, pigs and during the last decade reviewed. Ascaris suum was the most prevalent helminth, while Fasciola gigantica had the widest geographical distribution. It is envisaged that the present information will help in the formulation of disease-control policies, encourage on-farm good agricultural practices, and adequate hygiene and sanitation in abattoirs and meat-processing plants, with the aim of protecting public health.

Several factors may influence the structure of parasite communities in amphibian hosts. In this study, we describe the helminth parasites of three allopatric populations of the frog Leptodactylus podicipinus and test whether host size and sex were determinants of the structure and composition of the helminth communities. One hundred and twenty-three anurans were collected from three different study sites within the Pantanal wetlands and surveyed for helminth parasites. We found 14 helminth taxa: 7 species of nematodes, 4 species of trematodes, 1 species of cestodes, 1 species of acanthocephalan and one unidentified cyst. Host sex and size did not cause significant differences in helminth abundance or richness. The structure of helminth communities from the three study sites varied in terms of species composition, abundance and diversity. Six out of 14 helminth taxa were found in the three localities. Among those, the nematodes Cosmocerca podicipinus and Rhabdias sp., the trematode Catadiscus propinquus and the helminth cyst showed significant differences in mean abundances. We suggest that such differences found among the three component communities are driven by biotic and abiotic factors operating locally. Moreover, these differences stress the importance of local conditions, such as hydrologic characteristics and landscape composition, on helminth community structure.

The prevalence and potential zoonotic risk factors of intestinal nematodes of military working dogs, which are used for different military purposes, were assessed. Faecal samples from 352 defined-breed Turkish military dogs were investigated and 107 (30.4%) dogs were found to be infected with one or two nematode species. The following nematodes, with their respective prevalences, were diagnosed in the faecal samples: Toxascaris leonina (21.8%), Toxocara canis (13.3%), Trichuris vulpis (2.9%) and Uncinaria stenocephala (1.2%). Toxocara canis infections were more frequently seen in puppies (0–6 months old). The prevalence of T. canis was significantly higher in male than in female dogs and also higher in dogs which were exercised daily than in those without exercise. The highest prevalence was found in Belgian malinois breed dogs. Toxocara canis infections were not influenced by the floor type of the kennels (i.e. concrete or soil floor). There was no difference in the occurrence of T. canis infection when the last anthelmintic treatment was carried out less or more than 3 months prior to sampling. It is suggested that T. canis infected military dogs would be a threat not only for dog trainers but also for military personnel, notably during national and international operations.

Five species of monogeneans were recovered from the gill filaments of 181 chub mackerel, Scomber japonicus, from the Madeiran waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal, during 2004/2005. The monogenean Pseudokuhnia minor showed the highest prevalence (98.68%) and a mean intensity of 28.23, followed by Kuhnia scombri (prevalence of 43.71% and mean intensity of 2.69) and K. scombercolias (prevalence of 39.1% and a mean intensity of 1.81). Kuhnia sprostonae and Grubea cochlear were rare, occurring in only one and five fish hosts respectively. No correlation between fish host length and mean intensity of infection with the three most abundant monogeneans was found. However, significant differences in prevalence and abundance were found in relation to date of sampling for P. minor, and all parasites were aggregated in their distribution.

An examination of a sample of benthic invertebrates collected from the Upper San Marcos River in southwestern Texas, USA in September 1999 revealed that the nymph of the ephemeropteran Tricorythodes curvatus served as natural intermediate host of the nematode Rhabdochona kidderi texensis (Nematoda: Rhabdochonidae), an intestinal parasite mainly of the Rio Grande perch (Cichlasoma cyanoguttatum) in this locality; the prevalence of the parasite's third- and fourth-stage larvae in mayflies was 6.8% with the intensity of 1–2 larvae per nymph. Live R. kidderi texensis eggs collected from nematodes recovered from C. cyanoguttatum in Texas were transported to the Czech Republic, where they were used to experimentally infect nymphs of the palaearctic mayfly species Paraleptophlebia submarginata; the development of infective third- and fourth-stage larvae in this experimental intermediate host was completed after approximately 10 days at 19°C. Infected nymphs were fed to aquarium-reared fishes, four Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum and one Oreochromis niloticus, of which only three of the former became infected. The last (fourth) moult of a male nematode was observed in C. nigrofasciatum 23 days p.i. and adult males and gravid females with not fully mature (non-embryonated) eggs in uteri on days 40 and 51 p.i. The prepatent period of R. kidderi texensis is approximately two months.

Although there have been occasional reports of rare and low-level trichinellae infestation in beavers, no human cases of beaver-associated trichinellosis have been described. This report presents a possible case of human trichinellosis linked to beaver meat. Increasing consumption of beaver meat necessitates raising awareness of this potential source of trichinellosis.

Using Western blot techniques, the specificities of crude and purified (PAK and PAS) Anisakis simplex antigens were compared against 24 sera from patients diagnosed with Anisakis sensitization. All patients recognized a 60 kDa protein against the A. simplex crude extract, while 37.5% and 12.5% reacted with proteins of 40 and 25 kDa, respectively, when IgG was tested. In the case of IgE determination, 41.6% of sera were negative, while 12.5% and 20.8% appeared to cross-react against Toxocara canis and Ascaris suum, respectively. When the PAK antigen (A. simplex antigen purified by means of a column of IgG anti-A. simplex) was tested, immune recognition towards the 60, 40 and 25 kDa proteins increased in 83.3%, 16.7% and 4.2%, respectively, when the Ig antibodies were tested. In the case of the PAS antigen (PAK antigen purified by means of a column of IgG anti-A. suum), the reaction against the 40 and 25 kDa proteins increased to 45.8% and 25%, respectively, when Ig antibodies were used. Finally, when the EAS antigen (eluted from the anti-A. suum column after PAK purification) was tested, 83.3% of the assayed sera reacted against the 14 kDa protein, when the Ig antibodies, IgG and IgM immunoglobulins were measured. With the IgE determination, the reactions were observed in 41.7% of patients with proteins between 60 and 35 kDa against the PAS antigen. With the EAS antigen, reactive bands of 184, 84 and 14 kDa appeared. In conclusion, in the purification process of the A. simplex larval crude extract, the proteins implicated in cross-reactions with Ascaris and Toxocara were eliminated, with an important concentration of proteins responsible for the induction of specific responses.

Investigations undertaken on the monogeneans of amphibians in Nigeria have shown that host ecology has an influence on the distribution of these monogeneans. Amphibians from humid environments of the rainforest, a freshwater swamp and mangrove harboured no monogeneans, whereas those occurring in drier conditions in the savannah-mosaic and guinea savannah yielded five species of polystomatid parasites: Polystoma prudhoei from Bufo regularis, Polystoma galamensis from Rana galamensis, Eupolystoma alluaudi from Bufo regularis and Bufo maculatus, and two unidentified Polystoma species from Bufo regularis and Ptychadena oxyrynchus, respectively. Some of these monogeneans appear to have reproduction cycles which are synchronized with those of the hosts. The prevalence of E. alluaudi in Bufo spp. caught in New Bussa (68.4% in B. regularis and 82.3% in B. maculatus) were higher than those reported for this parasite in other locations in West Africa and for Eupolystoma anterorchis in Bufo pardalis from the Cape Flats of South Africa.

1. 5250 specimens of the common periwinkle, Littorina littorea (L.), from Scalby Rocks on the North Yorkshire coast were examined from October 1966 to November 1967 and data obtained on the size, sex and reproductive condition of the periwinkles and their infections with four species of Digenea, namely Cryptocotyle lingua (Creplin, 1825), Renicola roscovita (Stunkard, 1932), Himasthla leptosoma (Creplin, 1829) and Cercaria lebouri Stunkard, 1932.

2. The normal breeding cycle of uninfected L. littorea and the breeding cycles found in periwinkles infected with larval Digenea are described and discussed. Initial infection takes place mainly when periwinkles are spent after their first breeding season and though later damage to the gonad may prevent reproduction, the breeding potential of the periwinkle population at Scalby Rocks is unlikely to be affected seriously. There was no evidence of sex reversal in uninfected or infected L. littorea and the normal sex ratio is 1:1. The phenomenon of gigantism as a result of digenean infection is discussed with respect to L. littorea.

The helminth fauna of the barbary partridge (Alectoris barbara) in Tenerife Island (Canary Archipelago) was studied from 2001 to 2002, as there were no records of helminths from this host in the Canary Islands. Seven helminth species were identified: two cestodes Choanotaenia infundibulum and Lyruterina nigropunctata, and five nematodes Aonchotheca caudinflata, Baruscapillaria obsignata, Eucoleus annulatus, Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum. Lyruterina nigropunctata, A. galli and E. annulatus are recorded for first time in A. barbara. An analysis of available data on Alectoris spp. reveals the importance of intermediate hosts such as arthropods and earthworms in the diet of partridges. Terrestrial helminths are dominant species, with monoxenous and heteroxenous species being present in similar numbers in different Alectoris species along their geographical distribution. Helminth species found in Tenerife from A. barbara are poor indicators of the host colonization from North Africa because these helminths are species that are commonly found in fowl with a cosmopolitan distribution.

Fasciola gigantica fatty acid binding protein (FABP) was evaluated for evoking an immune response in mice, by delivering the gene coding for this protein with mannosylated-polyethylenimine (PEI) to peritoneal cells. Mice were immunized with 50 μg recombinant plasmid DNA (Group I) or DNA-PEI-mannose (a 22 kDa linear cationic polymer with mannose ligand) (Group II) via the intraperitoneal route. Antibody studies showed no significant humoral immune response evoked to this DNA immunization with either PEI-mannose-delivered or naked DNA. However, on protein boosting of these DNA-primed mice there was a significant enhancement of antibody titre. Flow cytometric bead array was used to measure quantitites of interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-5, interferon-γ (IFN-γ) and tumour necrosis factor (TNF) cytokines. Overexpression of T-helper 1 (Th1) cytokines such as IFN-γ and TNF, with a lower but significant expression of the T-helper 2 (Th2) cytokine IL-5 was detected. Gene delivery using polyethylenimine-mannose ligand showed significant expression of IFN-γ and TNF (P < 0.05), but no significant difference in IL-2, IL-4 and IL-5 (P>0.05) cytokine expression was observed between naked-DNA- and mannosylated PEI-DNA-delivered mice. Naked- or PEI-delivered-DNA immunization produced insignificant levels of IL-2 and IL-4 (P>0.05) cytokines in both groups of mice.

The development of Breinlia booliati is described in its natural host, Rattus sabanus and in an inbred strain of laboratory albino rat. The growth of the parasite is similar in both the rat hosts. The third moult occurs between six—eight days and the final moult between 24–28 days. Larvae were recovered initially from the skin and carcass. After five weeks, developing stages were seen only in the thoracic and abdominal cavities, the site of development of the adult worms. Worms became sexually mature by 11–12 weeks and there was considerable growth in length of the female worms after this stage.

Echinobothrium harfordi sp. nov. from the spiral intestine of Raja naevus in British waters is described and illustrated. The species most closely resembles E. affine as both possess two groups of eleven large apical hooks, but can be distinguished by fewer peduncle spines and by characteristics of the eggs. The intensity of infection in individual hosts was generally low, and although the incidence of infection was high in rays less than 35 cm in length, this fell towards zero in larger rays. The ccstode showed a marked affinity for the first two tiers of the spiral intestine.

The examination under the high power of the microscope of the walls of Heterodera cysts found on the roots of Agrostis stolonifera L. (Franklin 1938) showed the presence of rows of markings having the appearance of small punctations, and led to the tentative diagnosis of these cysts as H. punctata Thorne. By the kindness of Dr. Thorne the writer has been able to compare her cysts with some of Dr. Thorne's material, and has found that the surface markings have the same appearance. The writer would like here to acknowledge her indebtedness to Dr. Thorne for kindly lending his material. Cysts of several strains of H. schachtii have since been examined to find out if they also bear distinctive markings of any kind.

Necator americanus, originally isolated from man, developed completely in infant rabbits (RSG-1). This infection was serially passed in infant rabbits up to the 6th generation without using any immunosuppressant. Two day old infant rabbits demonstrated a high degree of susceptibility to N. americanus. Studies revealed the retention of worms in the intestine for more than 150 days during which egg production was high. In this experimental model the leukocyte, antibody and serum protein responses due to N. americanus infection were monitored. Results showed that eosinophil numbers rose significantly from day 28 to 170. A maximum was observed on day 80 (41%) in rabbits of the fourth generation. Antibodies to N. americanus were detectable in infected rabbits by counterimmunoelectrophoresis using third stage larval antigen (Rabbit strain). Generally, total globulins increased with decrease in albumin. Serum protein increase was associated with alpha-2, beta and gamma globulin components.

A hclminthological survey of 149 house rats in Jodhpur during the year 1975 revealed infection with 8 helminth species: 4 cestodes, Vampirolepis fraterna, Hymenolepis diminuta, Mathevotaenia symmetrica and Taenia taenlaeformis (larval stage); 3 nematodes, Aspiculuris pakistanica, Rictularia ratti and Syphacia sp. and one acanthocephalan, Moniliformis sp. Vampirolepis fratema, H. diminuta and A.pakistanica were most common, R.ratti and M. symmetrica less frequent, and T. taeniaeformis, Syphacia sp. and Moniliformis sp. of occasional occurrence. Multiple infections were more frequent among male than female hosts.
