The symmetric rendezvous problem on a network Q asks how two players, forced to use the same mixed strategy, can minimize their expected meeting time, starting from a known initial distribution on the nodes of Q. This minimum is called the (symmetric) ‘rendezvous value’ of Q. Traditionally, the players are assumed to receive no information while playing the game. We consider the effect on rendezvous times of giving the players some information about past actions and chance moves, enabling each of them to apply Bayesian updates to improve his knowledge of the other's whereabouts. This technique can be used to give lower bounds on the rendezvous times of the original game (without any revealed information). We consider the case in which they are placed a known distance apart on the line graph Q (known as ‘symmetric rendezvous on the line’). Our approach is to concentrate on a general analysis of the effect of revelations, rather than compute the best bounds possible with our technique.

We consider a model in which we have k items to be sold. Potential buyers make offers in a sequential fashion. Once made, the offer is either rejected or marked for acceptance. Once k items have been marked, the items are then sold to the buyers whose offers were marked, but at a price equal to the minimum of the k marked offers. Assuming that the successive offers are independent and identically distributed according to a specified distribution and that there is a fixed cost incurred whenever an offer is rejected, we determine structural results about the optimal policy, present computational approaches for finding the optimal policy, and give some heuristic policies.

We consider a stochastic model for the spread of an SEIR (susceptible → exposed → infective → removed) epidemic among a population of individuals partitioned into households. The model incorporates both vaccination and isolation in response to the detection of cases. When the infectious period is exponential, we derive an explicit formula for a threshold parameter, and analytic results that enable computation of the probability of the epidemic taking off. These quantities are found to be independent of the exposure period distribution. An approximation for the expected final size of an epidemic that takes off is obtained, evaluated numerically, and found to be reasonably accurate in large populations. When the infectious period is not exponential, but has an increasing hazard rate, we obtain stochastic comparison results in the case where the exposure period is fixed. Our main result shows that as the exposure period increases, both the severity of the epidemic in a single household and the threshold parameter decrease, under certain assumptions concerning isolation. Corresponding results for infectious periods with decreasing hazard rates are also derived.

We study the tail behavior of discounted aggregate claims in a continuous-time renewal model. For the case of Pareto-type claims, we establish a tail asymptotic formula, which holds uniformly in time.

Owen's multilinear extension (MLE) of a game is a very important tool in game theory and particularly in the field of simple games. Among other applications it serves to efficiently compute several solution concepts. In this paper we provide bounds for the MLE. Apart from its self-contained theoretical interest, the bounds offer the means in voting system studies of approximating the probability that a proposal is approved in a particular simple game having a complex component arrangement. The practical interest of the bounds is that they can be useful for simple games having a tedious MLE to evaluate exactly, but whose minimal winning coalitions and minimal blocking coalitions can be determined by inspection. Such simple games are quite numerous.

After suitable normalization the asymptotic root value W of a minimax game tree of order b ≥ 2 with independent and identically distributed input values having a continuous, strictly increasing distribution function on a subinterval of R appears to be a particular solution of the stochastic maximin fixed-point equation W ξ max1≤i≤bmin1≤j≤bWi,j, where Wi,j are independent copies of W and denotes equality in law. Moreover, ξ= g'(α) > 1, where g(x) := (1 − (1 − x)b)b and α denotes the unique fixed point of g in (0, 1). This equation, which takes the form F(t) = g(F(t/ξ)) in terms of the distribution function F of W, is studied in the present paper for a reasonably extended class of functions g so as to encompass more general stochastic maximin equations as well. A complete description of the set of solutions F is provided followed by a discussion of additional properties such as continuity, differentiability, or existence of moments. Based on these results, it is further shown that the particular solution mentioned above stands out among all other ones in that its distribution function is the restriction of an entire function to the real line. This extends recent work of Ali Khan, Devroye and Neininger (2005). A connection with another class of stochastic fixed-point equations for weighted minima and maxima is also discussed.

The simulation of distributions of financial assets is an important issue for financial institutions. If risk measures are evaluated for a simulated distribution instead of the model-implied distribution, the errors in the risk measurements need to be analyzed. For distribution-invariant risk measures which are continuous on compacts, we employ the theory of large deviations to study the probability of large errors. If the approximate risk measurements are based on the empirical distribution of independent samples, then the rate function equals the minimal relative entropy under a risk measure constraint. We solve this minimization problem explicitly for shortfall risk and average value at risk.

Corrections are made to formulations and proofs of some theorems about convolution equivalence closure for random sum distributions. These arise because of the falsity of a much used asymptotic equivalence lemma, and they impinge on the convolution equivalence closure theorem for general infinitely divisible laws.

The notion of conditional comonotonicity was first used implicitly by Kaas, Dhaene, and Goovaerts (2000) and was formally introduced by Jouini and Napp (2004) as a generalization of the classical concept of comonotonicity. The objective of the present paper is to further investigate this relatively new concept. The main result is that a random vector is comonotonic conditional to a certain σ-field if and only if it is almost surely comonotonic locally on each atom of the conditioning σ-field. We also provide a new proof of a distributional representation and an almost sure representation of a conditionally comonotonic random vector.

A network belongs to the monotone separable class if its state variables are homogeneous and monotone functions of the epochs of the arrival process. This framework contains several classical queueing network models, including generalized Jackson networks, max-plus networks, polling systems, multiserver queues, and various classes of stochastic Petri nets. We use comparison relationships between networks of this class with independent and identically distributed driving sequences and the GI/GI/1/1 queue to obtain the tail asymptotics of the stationary maximal dater under light-tailed assumptions for service times. The exponential rate of decay is given as a function of a logarithmic moment generating function. We exemplify an explicit computation of this rate for the case of queues in tandem under various stochastic assumptions.

The variable generalised stochastic epidemic model, which allows for variability in both the susceptibilities and infectivities of individuals, is analysed. A very different epidemic model which exhibits variable susceptibility and infectivity is the random-graph epidemic model. A suitable coupling of the two epidemic models is derived which enables us to show that, whilst the epidemics are very different in appearance, they have the same asymptotic final size distribution. The coupling provides a novel approach to studying random-graph epidemic models.

We consider the performance of the delta hedging strategy obtained from a local volatility model when using as input the physical prices instead of the model price process. This hedging strategy is called robust if it yields a superhedge as soon as the local volatility model overestimates the market volatility. We show that robustness holds for a standard Black-Scholes model whenever we hedge a path-dependent derivative with a convex payoff function. In a genuine local volatility model the situation is shown to be less stable: robustness can break down for many relevant convex payoffs including average-strike Asian options, lookback puts, floating-strike forward starts, and their aggregated cliquets. Furthermore, we prove that a sufficient condition for the robustness in every local volatility model is the directional convexity of the payoff function.

This paper presents a study of the intertemporal propagation of distributional properties of phenotypes in general polygenic multisex inheritance models with sex- and time-dependent heritabilities. It further analyzes the implications of these models under heavy-tailedness of traits' initial distributions. Our results suggest the optimality of a flexible asexual/binary mating system. Switching between asexual and binary inheritance mechanisms allows the population effectively to achieve a fast suppression of negative traits and a fast dispersion of positive traits, regardless of the distributional properties of the phenotypes in the initial period.

In this paper we present counter-intuitive examples for the multiclass queueing network, where each station may serve more than one job class with differentiated service priority and each job may require service sequentially by more than one service station. In our examples, the network performance is improved even when more jobs are admitted for service.

Consider a financial market in which an agent trades with utility-induced restrictions on wealth. For a utility function which satisfies the condition of reasonable asymptotic elasticity at -∞, we prove that the utility-based superreplication price of an unbounded (but sufficiently integrable) contingent claim is equal to the supremum of its discounted expectations under pricing measures with finite loss-entropy. For an agent whose utility function is unbounded from above, the set of pricing measures with finite loss-entropy can be slightly larger than the set of pricing measures with finite entropy. Indeed, the former set is the closure of the latter under a suitable weak topology. Central to our proof is a proof of the duality between the cone of utility-based superreplicable contingent claims and the cone generated by pricing measures with finite loss-entropy.

The transmission control protocol (TCP) is a transport protocol used in the Internet. In Ott (2005), a more general class of candidate transport protocols called ‘protocols in the TCP paradigm’ was introduced. The long-term objective of studying this class is to find protocols with promising performance characteristics. In this paper we study Markov chain models derived from protocols in the TCP paradigm. Protocols in the TCP paradigm, as TCP, protect the network from congestion by decreasing the ‘congestion window’ (i.e. the amount of data allowed to be sent but not yet acknowledged) when there is packet loss or packet marking, and increasing it when there is no loss. When loss of different packets are assumed to be independent events and the probability p of loss is assumed to be constant, the protocol gives rise to a Markov chain {Wn}, where Wn is the size of the congestion window after the transmission of the nth packet. For a wide class of such Markov chains, we prove weak convergence results, after appropriate rescaling of time and space, as p → 0. The limiting processes are defined by stochastic differential equations. Depending on certain parameter values, the stochastic differential equation can define an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process or can be driven by a Poisson process.

We show in this paper that if a stationary traffic source is regulated by a leaky bucket with leak rate ρ and bucket size σ, then the amount of information generated in successive time intervals is dominated, in the increasing convex ordering sense, by that of a Poisson arrival process with rate ρ/σ, with each arrival bringing an amount of information equal to σ. By exploiting this property, we then show that the mean value in the stationary regime of the content of a buffer drained at constant rate and fed with the superposition of regulated flows is less than the mean value of the same buffer fed with an adequate Poisson process, whose characteristics depend upon the regulated input flows.

In this paper we study two distributions, namely the distribution of the waiting times until given numbers of occurrences of compound patterns and the distribution of the numbers of occurrences of compound patterns in a fixed number of trials. We elucidate the interrelation between these two distributions in terms of the generating functions. We provide perspectives on the problems related to compound patterns in statistics and probability. As an application, the waiting time problem of counting runs of specified lengths is considered in order to illustrate how the distributions of waiting times can be derived from our theoretical results.

Assume that there are k types of insurance contracts in an insurance company. The ith related claims are denoted by {Xij, j ≥ 1}, i = 1,…,k. In this paper we investigate large deviations for both partial sums S(k; n1,…,nk) = ∑i=1k ∑j=1niXij and random sums S(k; t) = ∑i=1k ∑j=1Ni (t)Xij, where Ni(t), i = 1,…,k, are counting processes for the claim number. The obtained results extend some related classical results.

We study the phenomenon of entrainment in processor sharing networks, whereby, while individual network resources have sufficient capacity to meet demand, the requirement for simultaneous availability of resources means that a network may nevertheless be unstable. We show that instability occurs through poor control, and that, for a variety of network topologies, only small modifications to controls are required in order to ensure stability. For controls which possess a natural monotonicity property, we give some new results for the classification of the corresponding Markov processes, which lead to conditions both for stability and for instability.
