We study the Euler–Lagrange flow of a Tonelli Lagrangian on the 2-torus $\mathbb{T}^{2}$ at a fixed energy level ${\mathcal{E}}\subset T\mathbb{T}^{2}$ strictly above Mañé’s strict critical value. We prove that, if for some rational direction ${\it\zeta}\in S^{1}$ there is no invariant graph ${\mathcal{T}}\subset {\mathcal{E}}$ over $\mathbb{T}^{2}$ for the Euler–Lagrange flow with the property that all orbits on ${\mathcal{T}}$ have an asymptotic direction equal to ${\it\zeta}$, then there are chaotic dynamics in ${\mathcal{E}}$. This implies that, if the topological entropy of the Euler–Lagrange flow in ${\mathcal{E}}$ vanishes, then in ${\mathcal{E}}$ there are invariant graphs for all asymptotic directions ${\it\zeta}\in S^{1}$ and integrable-like behavior on a large scale.

Let $f$ be an orientation and area preserving diffeomorphism of an oriented surface $M$ with an isolated degenerate fixed point $z_{0}$ with Lefschetz index one. Le Roux conjectured that $z_{0}$ is accumulated by periodic orbits. In this paper, we will approach Le Roux’s conjecture by proving that if $f$ is isotopic to the identity by an isotopy fixing $z_{0}$ and if the area of $M$ is finite, then $z_{0}$ is accumulated not only by periodic points, but also by periodic orbits in the measure sense. More precisely, the Dirac measure at $z_{0}$ is the limit in the weak-star topology of a sequence of invariant probability measures supported on periodic orbits. Our proof is purely topological. It works for homeomorphisms and is related to the notion of local rotation set.

Let $(X,f)$ be a dynamical system, where $X$ is a perfect Polish space and $f:X\rightarrow X$ is a continuous map. In this paper we study the invariant dependent sets of a given relation string ${\it\alpha}=\{R_{1},R_{2},\ldots \}$ on $X$. To do so, we need the relation string ${\it\alpha}$ to satisfy some dynamical properties, and we say that ${\it\alpha}$ is $f$-invariant (see Definition 3.1). We show that if ${\it\alpha}=\{R_{1},R_{2},\ldots \}$ is an $f$-invariant relation string and $R_{n}\subset X^{n}$ is a residual subset for each $n\geq 1$, then there exists a dense Mycielski subset $B\subset X$ such that the invariant subset $\bigcup _{i=0}^{\infty }f^{i}B$ is a dependent set of $R_{n}$ for each $n\geq 1$ (see Theorems 5.4 and 5.5). This result extends Mycielski’s theorem (see Theorem A) when $X$ is a perfect Polish space (see Corollary 5.6). Furthermore, in two applications of the main results, we simplify the proofs of known results on chaotic sets in an elegant way.

We provide a complete characterization of extreme points of the space of sofic representations. We also show that the restriction map $\text{Sof}(G,P^{{\it\omega}})$ to $\text{Sof}(H,P^{{\it\omega}})$, where $H\subset G$, is not always surjective. The first part of the paper is a continuation of Păunescu [A convex structure on sofic embeddings. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys.34(4) (2014), 1343–1352] and follows more closely the plan of Brown [Topological dynamical systems associated to $\text{II}_{1}$-factors. Adv. Math.227(4) (2011), 1665–1699].

This article is devoted to the study of the multifractal analysis of ergodic averages in some non-uniformly hyperbolic systems. In particular, our results hold for the robust classes of multidimensional non-uniformly expanding local diffeomorphisms and Viana maps.

In the present article, we introduce beta-expansions in the ring $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ of $p$-adic integers. We characterise the sets of numbers with eventually periodic and finite expansions.

We provide a new criterion for the existence of a global cross section to a volume-preserving Anosov flow. The criterion is expressed in terms of expansion and contraction rates of the flow and generalizes known results of this type.

The paper introduces a general method to construct conformal measures for a local homeomorphism on a locally compact non-compact Hausdorff space, subject to mild irreducibility-like conditions. Among other things, the method is used to give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of eigenmeasures for the dual Ruelle operator associated to a locally compact non-compact irreducible Markov shift equipped with a uniformly continuous potential function. As an application to operator algebras the results are used to determine for which ${\it\beta}$ there are gauge invariant ${\it\beta}$-KMS weights on a simple graph $C^{\ast }$-algebra when the one-parameter automorphism group is given by a uniformly continuous real-valued function on the path space of the graph.

Given a periodic point ${\it\omega}$ in a ${\it\psi}$-mixing shift with countable alphabet, the sequence $\{S_{n}\}$ of random variables counting the number of multiple returns in shrinking cylindrical neighborhoods of ${\it\omega}$ is considered. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence in distribution of $\{S_{n}\}$ are obtained, and it is shown that the limit is a Pólya–Aeppli distribution. A global condition on the shift system which guarantees the convergence in distribution of $\{S_{n}\}$ for every periodic point is introduced. This condition is used to derive results for $f$-expansions and Gibbs measures. Results are also obtained concerning the possible limit distribution of sub-sequences $\{S_{n_{k}}\}$. A family of examples in which there is no convergence is presented. We also exhibit an example for which the limit distribution is pure Poissonian.

We develop a theory that allows us to code dynamical systems induced by primitive substitutions continuously as shifts of finite type in many different ways. The well-known prefix–suffix coding turns out to correspond to one special case. We precisely analyse the basic properties of these codings (injectivity, coding of the periodic points, properties of the presentation graph, interaction with the shift map). A lot of examples illustrate the theory and show that, depending on the particular coding, several amazing effects may occur. The results give new insights into the theory of substitution dynamical systems and might serve as a powerful tool for further researches.

We provide a new proof of a theorem whose proof was sketched by Sullivan [Disjoint spheres, approximation by imaginary quadratic numbers, and the logarithm law for geodesics. Acta Math.149(3–4) (1982), 215–237], namely that if the Poincaré exponent of a geometrically finite Kleinian group $G$ is strictly between its minimal and maximal cusp ranks, then the Patterson–Sullivan measure of $G$ is not proportional to the Hausdorff or packing measure of any gauge function. In this work we study homeomorphisms of closed orientable surfaces homotopic to the identity, focusing on the existence of non-contractible periodic orbits. We show that, if $g$ is such a homeomorphism, and if ${\hat{g}}$ is its lift to the universal covering of $S$ that commutes with the deck transformations, then one of the following three conditions must be satisfied: (1) the set of fixed points for ${\hat{g}}$ projects to a closed subset $F$ which contains an essential continuum; (2) $g$ has non-contractible periodic points of every sufficiently large period; or (3) there exists a uniform bound $M>0$ such that, if $\hat{x}$ projects to a contractible periodic point, then the ${\hat{g}}$ orbit of $\hat{x}$ has diameter less than or equal to $M$. Some consequences for homeomorphisms of surfaces whose rotation set is a singleton are derived.
