Adsorption isotherms for water on homoionic (Ca2+, Li+, Na+, and K+) exchanged forms of Crook County, Wyoming, montmorillonite (CMS Source Clay SWy-1) were measured between 25° and 70°C using a vacuum microbalance having automated control of water vapor pressure. From these adsorption data, integral enthalpies and entropies of adsorption were calculated. Both quantities were negative, but decreased in magnitude with increasing amounts of adsorbed water. For all four cationic forms of the clay, the amount of initial water adsorption at 25°C and at low relative humidities was sensitive to the sample temperature during prior evacuation of water, less water being adsorbed by samples evacuated at 100°C compared with samples evacuated at 25°. For Ca- and Na-montmorillonite, these changes were reversible after several subsequent desorption/adsorption cycles, but recovery was not observed for the Li-SWy-1 clay, probably because of migration of Li+ into the aluminosilicate structure.

Since the initial studies of chlorite polytypes, it has been suggested that the stability of the various polytypes may be a function of the temperature at which the mineral formed; however, few studies have been performed in which polytypes of chlorite in a specific suite of samples have been determined and correlated with temperature. A review of the reported occurrences of type I chlorite indicates that other factors, including grain size of the host rock, may be at least as important as temperature in controlling the stability of these polytypes. Results of systematic studies in areas of diagenesis and very low-grade metamorphism suggest that type-II chlorite is stable at temperatures well below 200°C and that it can form as the initial chlorite phase without passing through any intermediate polytypic stages. The conditions under which type-I polytypes occur are somewhat restricted, and cognizance of those restrictions will help to direct future studies of chlorite polytype transformations. These studies should focus on the structural details of polytype transformations; on the relationship of polytype stability to pressure, composition and kinetics; and on experimental calibration of the transformations.

Trioctahedral smectite and regularly interstratified chlorite/smectite in strata of the East Berlin Formation of the Connecticut Valley are largely restricted to black shale and gray mudstone deposited in alkaline, perennial lakes. The precursor of the mixed-layer clay appears to have been a smectite. Alkaline lake waters and inherited pore waters rich in magnesium favored the transformation of smectite to mixed-layer chlorite/smectite by fixation of brucitic interlayers into the smectite unit structure. Gray mudstones containing the mixed-layer chlorite/smectite are invariably underlain by magnesium-rich black shale—a possible source of Mg for the clay mineral transformations. The black shale is composed predominantly of Mg-rich trioctahedral smectite of probable authigenic origin.

We have investigated the adsorption of adenine, adenosine, ribose, and adenosine-5′-phosphate (5′-AMP) by allophane at pH 4, 6 and 8. Adenine, adenosine and ribose gave similar isotherms, i.e. adsorption increased regularly with solution concentration and decreased in the order: pH 8 > pH 6 > pH 4. Allophane had a greater affinity for 5′-AMP than for adenine, adenosine or ribose. Further, the extent of adsorption for 5′-AMP increased in the order: pH 8 ≪ pH 6 ≈ pH 4. The adsorption of 5′-AMP at pH 4 and pH 6 was about 60 times greater than at pH 8. The strong adsorption of 5′-AMP accords with the well known high phosphate-retention capacity of allophane and allophane-rich soils. The experimental data may be rationalized in terms of the pH-dependent charge characteristics of the organic solutes and allophane. The large propensity of allophane to retain 5′-AMP is ascribed to ligand exchange between the phosphate of 5′-AMP and the hydroxyl of (HO)Al(OH2) groups, exposed at perforations on the wall of allophane spherules, giving rise to a surface (chelation) complex. The high affinity of nucleotides for allophane has implications for the possible role of allophane in the abiotic formation of RNA-type polynucleotides although nucleotide ‘immobilization’ by surface complexation might hinder RNA oligomerization.

Solutions containing hydroxy-FeAl oligocations (HFA) were prepared by two procedures: (1) treatment of a mixture of FeCl3 and AlCl3 with aqueous Na2CO3, followed by aging of the product and (2) preliminary preparation and aging of hydroxy-Al13 oligocations followed by reaction of the latter with aqueous FeCl3. Ion-exchange of Na-montmorillonite with HFA yield pillared clay (designated as FeAl-PILC) with d(001) values of 1.98–1.56 nm and a surface area of 230 m2/g. The pillar structure, thermal stability, surface acidity, and reduction behavior of the pillared clays were determined by 27Al-NMR, XRD, DTA, Mössbauer spectroscopy, Py-IR, TPD, TPR. Fe/Al ratios greatly affect the pillar structure, surface area and thermal stability of FeAl-PILC. The pillar in FeAl-PILC with Fe/Al ratio <0.5 has a Keggin structure, similar to that of Al-PILC, but the pillar structures of FeAl-PILC with Fe/Al ≥0.5 are the ferric tripolymer species similar to those of Fe-PILC. The basal spacings, surface area, and thermal stability are decreased with increasing Fe/Al ratio. There is relatively strong interaction between Fe and Al in the pillars. The interaction is enhanced with decreasing Fe/Al ratio. Reduction of the Fe phase in FeAl-PILC was reduced by the interaction of Fe with Al.

Upper Cretaceous-Tertiary marine clayey-calcareous rocks of the Hekimhan basin contain fibrous clay minerals in significant amounts. Ophiolitic rocks in the provenance area have contributed the elements to form the clay minerals. XRD, SEM, major, trace and REE analyses were applied to samples taken from several stratigraphic sections. Diagenetic minerals such as smectite, dolomite, calcite, gypsum, celestite and quartz/chalcedony are associated with sepiolite-palygorskite group clays. Trace and rare earth elements (REE) are more abundant in palygorskite than sepiolite. REE abundances in the sepiolite-palygorskite are characterized by negative Eu and positive Nd anomalies when normalized with respect to chondrite and shale. Sepiolites with sharp XRD peaks are formed by diagenetic replacement of dolomite and diagenetic transformation of palygorskite, or by direct crystallization from solution. The average structural formula of the sepiolite is:

Palygorskite appears to be authigenic by direct precipitation from solution. It exists in both monoclinic and orthorhombic forms with the mean structural formula given below

The thermally-induced dehydroxylation and transformations of the 2:1 phyllosilicate pyrophyllite have been studied using infrared spectroscopy in the frequency range 350–11000 cm−1 and the temperature range 200–1500°C. The dehydroxylation of pyrophyllite to pyrophyllite dehydroxylate occurs between 500 and 900°C. It is characterized by a decrease in the intensity of the OH signals and phonon bands of pyrophyllite and the eventual disappearance of these features as well as the appearance of extra signals related to pyrophyllite dehydroxylate and an intermediate phase. Our results are consistent with previous observations that the SiO4 tetrahedral sheet structure still exists in pyrophyllite dehydroxylate, that the Si-O-Al linkages and 2:1 structure remain in the pyrophyllite dehydroxylate, and that AlO5 trigonal bipyramids form.

Two extra OH bands at 3690 and 3702 cm−1 and their overtones at 7208 and 7234 cm−1 are observed, for the first time, in samples annealed at the temperature range 550–900°C. Our results suggest that the formation and dehydroxylation of the extra OH species can be strongly affected by kinetic effects. The experimental evidence shows that the dehydroxylation of pyrophyllite is a two-stage process. The appearance of these additional OH bands is interpreted in terms of an unknown intermediate phase, and may be related to the second endothermic peak observed at high temperatures in DTA experiments. Pyrophyllite dehydroylate decomposes into a Si-rich amorphous phase and mullite in the temperature range 950–1100°C. Cristobalite is observed in the temperature range 1150–1500°C.

A new approach to the interpretation of Mössbauer spectra of Fe3+-phyllosilicates having vacant trans-octahedra is based on (1) crystal structure simulation methods that allow for the size and the shape of a Fe3+-octahedron as a function of the nearest surrounding cations; and (2) calculations of electric field gradients (EFG) on Fe3+ in terms of the ionic point-charge model. Calculations were performed by direct summation within the region of radius ≤50 Å. Coordinates for the anions in the coordination octahedra have been assigned to take into account the nearest cationic environment. Atomic coordinates for the rest of the summation volume are those for the average unit cell. EFG calculations for cation combinations responsible for the visible quadrupole splitting Δvis in the spectra of nontronite, “red” muscovite, and celadonite have led to good agreement between Δvis and Δcalc. Computer fitting of the nontronite and celadonite spectra based on EFG calculations for the rest of the possible cation combinations suggests that the distribution of tetrahedral cations in nontronite obeys the Loewenstein rule, and in celadonite, the distribution of R3+ and R2+ over cis-octahedra is predominantly ordered, in agreement with electron diffraction and infrared spectroscopy data. The Mössbauer spectrum of one of the glauconites suggested the presence of celadonite-like and muscovite-like domains in its 2:1 layers.

The octahedral composition of palygorskite in more than 300 samples from the Pefkaki deposit, W. Macedonia, Greece, has been studied by near-infrared (NIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), and evaluated according to the formula $y{\text{Mg}}_5{\text{Si}}_8{\text{O}}_{20}{\left(\text{OH}\right)}_2\cdot x{\text{Mg}}_2{\text{Fe}}_{\text{2}}^{\text{III}}{\text{Si}}_8{\text{O}}_{20}{\left(\text{OH}\right)}_2\cdot \left(1-x-y\right)$ Mg2Al2Si8O20(OH)2. Included in the study were PFl-1 and several commercial palygorskites. Our analysis of 2nd derivative NIR spectra shows that the dioctahedral composition is adequately described by three sharp overtone bands representing AlAlOH, AlFeIIIOH and FeIIIFeIIIOH in M2 dioctahedral sites, and that the summed intensity of these bands is proportional to the amount of dioctahedral component present (1−y). The samples show large variations in the degree of dioctahedral FeIII-for-Al substitution with FeIII occupying up to 70% of the dioctahedral M2 sites. Ternary analysis shows that the distribution of dioctahedral Al and FeIII is not random, but displays a tendency towards homoionic pairing. An overtone band at 7214 cm−1 and several combination bands are indicative of a trioctahedral Mg3OH component (y), and their appearance correlates with a distinct palygorskite signature in thermogravimetric analysis. Nevertheless, these bands cannot be used reliably for the quantification of a trioctahedral palygorskite component due to their close similarity to those of sepiolite. To circumvent this problem, we have evaluated y indirectly by calculating the difference between 1−y and the total concentration of palygorskite determined by the normalized intensity of the d110 XRD peak of palygorskite at 10.4 Å. Using this methodology, we have found that the samples conform to a trioctahedral limit of y ≈ 0.55, although within this limit they display large variations in octahedral character. Finally, we extend the above methodology to PLS chemometrics and show how NIR can be used to determine palygorskite content routinely in multimineralic geological samples.

Clay minerals share a basic set of structural and chemical characteristics (e.g. they are largely aluminosilicates with layer structures) and yet each clay mineral has its own unique set of properties that determine how it will interact with other chemical species. The variation, in both chemistry and structure, among the clays leads to their applications in extremely diverse fields. Common and important industrial applications of clays are in the manufacture of paper, paint, plastics and rubber. One of their more recent and most economically important applications is in the petlitter industry where their adsorptive and deodorizing properties are used. Specialty uses include clay additive to chicken feed to boost nutritional uptake by the chicken, and in using clay as fillers and major ingredients in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Clays are used for their catalytic properties and for their ability to adsorb greases, fats and other organic materials. Those who exist with scarce resources frequently collect clays from local deposits and ingest them as a source of dietary minerals. It is difficult for a day to go by without using a product incorporating clay minerals, as we all use ceramics such as dinnerware and sanitaryware.

Atmospheric acidic deposition introduces hydrogen ions to terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, which become partially neutralized by chemical weathering. In the southern Alps of Switzerland, small catchments containing little or no soil and lacking carbonate minerals represent sensitive hydrological settings in which the relationship between alteration of granitic gneiss by acid deposition and the resulting composition of lake waters can be studied. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy, coupled with X-ray powder diffraction of lake sediments from such areas showed mainly unaltered minerals from parent rocks and no secondary silicate minerals. Element mapping indicated noncrystalline aluminum hydroxide as a product of the chemical weathering of silicates. Noncrystalline iron hydroxide was also observed. Mass balance calculations and the stoichiometry of suitable chemical reactions representing the weathering processes were used to derive a plausible reaction sequence on the interaction of the predominant reactive rock minerals with acid precipitation that accounted for the measured chemical composition of the acid lakes.

Two soil sequences in northern Italy (Val di Fiemme and Val Genova) along an elevational gradient ranging from moderate (950 m a.s.l.) to high alpine (2440 m a.s.l.) climate zones were investigated with respect to element losses (Ca, Mg, K, Na, Fe, Al, Si, Mn) and development of clay minerals. Soils formed on paleo-rhyolitic parent material in Val di Fiemme and on tonalitic-granodioritic morainic material in Val Genova. All the soils have a similar age (∼12,000 y) and have been classified as Podzols. The soils are very acid and the pH values tend to increase with decreasing altitude. Podzolization processes were most intense in the range of the subalpine forest up to the timberline (1400–1900 m above sea-level (a.s.l.)). Element leaching was greatest in this range and weathering rates decrease with both higher and lower altitudes. Due to the different lithologies and precipitations between the two valleys, the total amount of chemical weathering was slightly different, although the same trends with altitude could be observed. Imogolite-type materials (ITM) are generally of minor importance. Greater concentrations of ITM were observed in the Bhs or Bs horizons of the Episkeleti-Entic Podzols at the lower altitudes. Iron eluviation was similar in all Podzols while larger amounts of eluviated Al were detected in Val Genova. The pattern of smectite distribution along the climosequences had similarities to the trend of cation losses. The largest amount of low-charge expandable minerals seems to exist in the range of the subalpine forest up to the timberline. The development of clay minerals with a smaller layer charge was more advanced in Podzols on rhyolitic material where smectite could be detected in the Bhs and Bs horizon. Parent material influenced chemical weathering in the soils along the two climosequences and essentially determined the degree of weathering and the formation of clay minerals.

Highly significant differences are observed between the methyl derivatives of attapulgite, produced when this mineral is reacted with (CH3)2Si(OC2H5)2, in the presence or in absence of HCl. In the first case, the corresponding infrared spectra show characteristic absorption bands due to the Si(CH3)2 radicals at 1260, 850 and 800 cm−1 as well as a shoulder at 960 cm−1, the latter assigned to silanol groups. The 850 cm−1 frequency which is usually exhibited by trimethylsilicon compounds is also detected when —O—Si(CH3)2 radicals are grafted in the silicates, but only if HCl is present in the reaction. Neither this band nor the 960 cm−1 shoulder appear in the spectrum of the derivative synthetized in absence of HCl. A comparative study by both i.r. spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction does not reveal structural modifications in attapulgite after it has been methylated in absence of HCl. However, although the i.r. spectra of the HCl-methylated derivatives, prepared at different periods, do not indicate substantial structural perturbations, X-ray diffraction patterns show a gradual weakening of the peaks due to attapulgite, as reaction time increases; the intensity of the (110) order reflection is drastically reduced after a 165 hr attack. The most viable mechanism for the grafting of the dimethylsiloxy units in attapulgite is through the HCl induced silanol sites. When the reaction is taking place in anh. benzene medium (absence of HCl), dimethyldiethoxysilane may be hydrolyzed by a fraction of water contained in attapulgite; the hydrolysis products which do incorporate on the surface of the silicate are identified by i.r. spectroscopy.

A sample of ferripyrophyllite, a mineral with ideal composition Fe2SiO10(OH)2, was analyzed by Mössbauer spectroscopy, magnetization and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The iron is entirely ferric, and the main feature of the Mössbauer spectrum at room temperature is a single absorption line with isomer shift δ = 0.36(1) mm/sec due to iron in M2 sites. The line is broadened by a slight quadrupole splitting Δ = 0.18(1) mm/sec, the smallest yet reported for a sheet silicate. Weaker features corresponding to quadrupole doublets with relative intensities of 7% and 8% having δ = 0.43(1) mm/sec; Δ = 1.22(2) mm/sec and δ = 0.14(1) mm/sec; Δ = 0.59(2) mm/sec are assigned to ferric iron in nonequivalent octahedral and tetrahedral sites, respectively, giving the following formula, based on published chemical analysis: Ca0.05(Fe3+1.87Mg0.11Al0.09)VI(Si3.80Fe3+0.16Al0.04)IVO10(OH)2, where Ca is in interlayer sites. Ferripyrophyllite orders antiferromagnetically at 18(2)°K. The Mössbauer spectrum at 4.2°K consists of a single, resolved magnetic pattern with hyperfine field Bhf = 51.8 T. The relatively high Néel temperature compared with other dioctahedral ferric phyllosilicates provides further evidence that Fe3+ cations tend to be ordered on M2 sites within the octahedral sheet.

The surface thermodynamic properties of a series of n-alkylammonium and quaternary ammonium treated clay films were determined by contact angle measurement of drops of test liquids using the Young equation for polar materials. The two clays were a Wyoming montmorillonite (SWy-1) and Laponite RD. For a series of primary n-alkyl (6 ≤ n ≤ 15) and several quaternary organic cations, the organo-clay (both SWy-1 and Laponite RD) showed very little change in the value of γLW compared to the equivalent ammonium-saturated clay. Also, γ⊕ remained small or increased slightly compared to the ammonium-saturated clay. For SWy-1 exchanged by both quaternary ammonium and primary n-alkylammonium cations, the value of γ⊖ was smaller (0.1 ≤ γ⊖ ≤ 15.8 mJ/m2) than for the ammonium-saturated clay (γ⊖ = 36.2 mJ/m2) and decreased linearly with the number of carbon atoms. The γ⊖ values for the organic cation-exchanged Laponite RD samples (24.2 ≤ γ⊖ ≤ 31.2 mJ/m2) were smaller than or comparable to the ammonium saturated clay (γ⊖ = 30.7 mJ/m2), and were relatively insensitive to the number of carbon atoms in the organic cation. Thus, for both clays the increased adsorption of organic molecules resulting from replacement of inorganic cations by organic cations is due primarily to the decrease in the value of the Lewis base parameter, γ⊖.

Sepiolite is a valid mineral with the following chemical formula: $8MgO\, \cdot \,12Si{O_2}\, \cdot \,n{H_2}O.$$

Its unit cell characteristics are: $a\, = \,13.4{\AA};\,b\, = \,26.8{\AA};\,c\, = \,5.28{\AA};Z\, = \,2;\,D_{{2^h}}^6\, - \,P\frac{{{2_1}}}{n}\,\frac{2}{c}\,\frac{2}{n}.$

They were determined on the sepiolite from Ampandrandava (Madagascar). Its structure was determined by means of the “trial and error” method and the observed and calculated intensities rendered a good agreement.

The formula of the structure is: $\mathop 1\limits_\infty {[{H_2}O]_n} \cdot \mathop 1\limits_\infty \{ {(Mg,F{e^{3 + }},F{e^{2 + }},\,Al)_8}{({H_2}O)_4}{(O,OH)_4}[{(Si,Al)_{10}}{O_{30}}]\} \cdot n\, \leqslant \,8.$

The mineral contains zeolitic, crystal- and constitution-water. A good agreement was achieved between the chemical, thermal, and morphological qualities and the x-ray data. The mineral remains stable up to about 350°C and begins to change into an “anhydride” above this temperature.

The formula of the structure of sepiolite. “anhydride” is: $\mathop 1\limits_\infty \{ {(Mg,F{e^{3 + }},F{e^{2 + }},\,Al)_8}{(O,\,OH)_4}[{(Si,\,Al)_{10}}{O_{30}}]\}.$

Its unit coll characteristics are: $a\, = \,10.9{\AA};\,b\, = \,23.3{\AA};\,c = 5.28{\AA};\,a \approx \,{90^ \circ };\,Z = \,2;\,C_{{2^h}}^5\, - \,P_n^{{2_1}}\,11.$

The minerals xylotile, mountain wood and gunnbjarnite are isotypical with sepiolite.

The compositions, fabrics and structures of authigenic minerals that formed recently from silicic volcanic ash layers from a 1300-meter sediment column obtained at ODP Site 808 of the Nankai Trough were studied using XRD, STEM, AEM and SEM. Smectite and zeolites were first detected as alteration products of volcanic glass with increasing depth, as follows: smectite at 200 m below seafloor (mbsf) (20 °C), clinoptilolite at 640 mbsf (60 °C) and analcime at 810 mbsf (75 °C).

A primitive clay precursor to smectite was observed as a direct alteration product of glass at 366 mbsf (approximately 30 °C). High defect smectite with lattice fringe spacings of 12 to 17 Å and having a cellular texture filling pore space between altering glass shards occurs at 630 mbsf. Packets of smectite become larger and less disordered with increasing depth and temperature. The smectite that forms as a direct alteration product of volcanic glass has K as the dominant interlayer cation.

With increasing depth, smectite becomes depleted in K as the proportion of clinoptilolite increases, and then becomes depleted in Na as the proportion of analcime increases. The composition of the exchangeable interlayer of smectite appears to be controlled by the formation first of K-rich clinoptilolite and then Na-rich analcime, via the pore fluid, giving rise at depth to Ca-rich smectite. Smectite reacted to form illite in the interbedded shales but not in the bentonites. Paucity of K in smectite and pore fluids, due to formation of clinoptilolite under closed system conditions, is believed to have inhibited the reaction relative to shales.

Saponites and vermiculites may assume at least 11 ordered or semi-ordered layer stacking sequences. For a given relative humidity, the layer stacking type assumed is a function of the nature of the interlayer cation, the layer charge density, the mean size of the particles, and the di- or trioctahedral character of the sheets. For each interlayer cation, a succession of layer stacking types can be observed as relative humidity increases. For high relative humidity, some particular layer stacking types exist, but only for low-charge minerals. No other differences have been found for saponites and vermiculites in each successive layer stacking type. The degree of order that these layer stacking types imply is probably due to the existence of electrostatic bonds between hydrated interlayer cations and surface oxygens of the substituted tetrahedra. For octahedrally substituted 2:1 phyllosilicates, however, the disorder of the layer stacking sequences is related to a highly delocalized distribution of negative charges on the surface oxygens of the layers.

A study of the superstructures detected in saponites and vermiculites indicates that the interlayer cations tend to be located as far as possible from one another. The superstructures exist only with some cations and some layer stacking types and if the layer charge density is compatible with the charge produced by the cation distribution in this kind of superstructure.
