A wide range of material has been studied in an investigation of the relationship between “resistance” to attack by Empoasca facialis and “hairiness” of the cotton plant.

A continuous range has been found between full susceptibility and very high resistance.

In general relative susceptibility, as gauged by visual assessment of symptoms, has been found to correspond closely with relative infestation, determined by counts of nymphs.

With attention confined to grown plants, the relative susceptibility of varieties has been found substantially constant under varying levels of exposure to infestation.

Hairiness of the cotton plant has been found to show an extremely wide range in degree, style and distribution. A method has been devised for expressing hairiness numerically, taking into account both length and density of hairs.

A very close and consistent relationship has been found between degree of hairiness of the under surface of the leaf, and degree of resistance to Jassid. Without exception, all thoroughly hairy types have been found highly resistant, and all non-hairy types fully susceptible. Intermediate degrees of hairiness ate associated with intermediate degrees of resistance.

The relationship has been found to hold good between varieties and between plants within varieties, of the species G. hirsutum; also between plants of G. barbadense, and in segregating progenies of hybrids between these two species.

The hairiness of resistant strains of cotton has been found to develop gradually with the growth of the plant; the first few leaves on the seedlings being virtually non-hairy. This lack of hairiness in the early stages of growth is associated with a lack of resistance. Hairiness and resistance to Jassid develop concurrently.

The conclusion is reached that hairiness of the leaf confers resistance to Jassid and that degree of leaf hairiness, measured in an appropriate manner, is a thoroughly reliable guide to degree of resistance.

Length of hairs is shown to be of prime importance, and high densities without adequate length are ineffective.

The relative importance of hairs on lamina and midrib has not been conclusively determined. Both have an influence on resistance but a high degree of midrib hairiness is not essential if the lamina is hairy.

Hairs on stem and petiole are shown to be of very little direct importance.

A study was undertaken of the seasonal abundance, feeding habits, resting habits and malaria infection rates of the sibling species Anopheles gambiae Giles and A. arabiensis Patton on the Kano Plain, Kenya, and the surrounding foothills. A. arabiensis was the dominant species on the plains and A. gambiae in the foothills. A. gambiae was highly anthropophilic with 92% feeding on man, whereas 59% of A. arabiensis fed on cattle. In both species, the choice of host was affected by the availability of cattle. A. arabiensis rested out of doors more commonly than A. gambiae. The sporozoite rate in A. gambiae was 5·33%, 15·98 times higher than the rate of 0·33% found in A. arabiensis.

Aphelinidae are all insect parasitoids, and most species are associated with nymphal stages of Homoptera: Sternorrhyncha, either as primary parasitoids or hyperparasitoids. The occurrence of egg parasitism in aphelinids has been recorded in eight of the 38 valid genera and these records are reviewed; it is particularly common in the genus Centrodora, which is shown to be the most polyphagous in the family. One species, C. darwini (Girault), is given special attention because of its occurrence in three recent surveys for biological control agents of crop pests. It is briefly redescribed, diagnosed, and shown to be the most polyphagous aphelinid known. A checklist of Australian Centrodora spp. is given, including the new combination Centrodora grotiusi (Girault) comb. n. The purported evidence for the classification of certain Encarsia spp. associated with eggs of Lepidoptera as ‘heterotrophic parasitoids’ is re-examined and dismissed.

The study identified insecticidal effects from the cinnamon and clove essential oils in Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). The lethal concentrations (LC50 and LC90), lethal time, and repellent effect on larvae, pupae, and adults of T. molitor after exposure to six concentrations of each essential oil and toxic compounds were evaluated. The chemical composition of the cinnamon oil was also determined and primary compounds were eugenol (10.19%), trans-3-caren-2-ol (9.92%), benzyl benzoate (9.68%), caryophyllene (9.05%), eugenyl acetate (7.47%), α-phellandrene (7.18%), and α-pinene (6.92%). In clove essential oil, the primary compounds were eugenol (26.64%), caryophyllene (23.73%), caryophyllene oxide (17.74%), 2-propenoic acid (11.84%), α-humulene (10.48%), γ-cadinene (4.85%), and humulene oxide (4.69%). Cinnamon and clove essential oils were toxic to T. molitor. In toxic chemical compounds, eugenol have stronger contact toxicity in larvae, pupae, and adult than caryophyllene oxide, followed by α-pinene, α-phellandrene, and α-humulene. In general, the two essential oils were toxic and repellent to adult T. molitor. Cinnamon and clove essential oils and their compounds caused higher mortality and repellency on T. molitor and, therefore, have the potential for integrated management programs of this insect.

The red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) (Coleoptera: Dryophthoridae), native to tropical Asian regions, has become a serious threat to palm trees all over the world. Knowledge of its flight potential is vital to improving the preventive and curative measures currently used to manage this pest. As R. ferrugineus is a quarantine pest, it is difficult to study its flight potential in the field. A computer-monitored flight mill was adapted to analyse the flying ability of R. ferrugineus through the study of different flight parameters (number of flights, total distance flown, longest single flight, flight duration, and average and maximum speed) and the influence of the weevil's sex, age, and body size on these flight parameters. Despite significant differences in the adult body size (body weight and length) of males and females, the sex of R. ferrugineus adults did not have an influence on their flight potential. Neither adult body size nor age was found to affect the weevil's flying abilities, although there was a significantly higher percentage of individuals flying that were 8–23 days old than 1–7 days old. Compared to the longest single flight, 54% of the insects were classified as short-distance flyers (covering <100 m) and 36 and 10% were classified as medium- (100–5000 m) and long-distance (>5000 m), respectively. The results are compared with similar studies on different insect species under laboratory and field conditions.

Researchers and regulatory agencies often make statistical inferences from insect count data using modelling approaches that assume homogeneous variance. Such models do not allow for formal appraisal of variability which in its different forms is the subject of interest in ecology. Therefore, the objectives of this paper were to (i) compare models suitable for handling variance heterogeneity and (ii) select optimal models to ensure valid statistical inferences from insect count data. The log-normal, standard Poisson, Poisson corrected for overdispersion, zero-inflated Poisson, the negative binomial distribution and zero-inflated negative binomial models were compared using six count datasets on foliage-dwelling insects and five families of soil-dwelling insects. Akaike's and Schwarz Bayesian information criteria were used for comparing the various models. Over 50% of the counts were zeros even in locally abundant species such as Ootheca bennigseni Weise, Mesoplatys ochroptera Stål and Diaecoderus spp. The Poisson model after correction for overdispersion and the standard negative binomial distribution model provided better description of the probability distribution of seven out of the 11 insects than the log-normal, standard Poisson, zero-inflated Poisson or zero-inflated negative binomial models. It is concluded that excess zeros and variance heterogeneity are common data phenomena in insect counts. If not properly modelled, these properties can invalidate the normal distribution assumptions resulting in biased estimation of ecological effects and jeopardizing the integrity of the scientific inferences. Therefore, it is recommended that statistical models appropriate for handling these data properties be selected using objective criteria to ensure efficient statistical inference.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine host selection by Cotesia plutellae Kurdjumov when larvae of its host, Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus), fed on Chinese cabbage, Brassica campestris L. ssp. pekinensis and those fed on common cabbage, Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata were provided simultaneously, and to investigate the roles of plant and host volatiles in mediating host selection. When C. plutellae were provided with equal numbers of host larvae on plants of the two species in one arena, the parasitoid parasitized 4- to 15-fold more host larvae on Chinese cabbage than on common cabbage. This preference changed little with host density. However, an experience of searching coupled with an oviposition in a host larva on a leaf of the less-preferred plant, common cabbage, significantly increased the preference for parasitizing host larvae on this plant and resulted in twice as many host larvae parasitized on this plant than on Chinese cabbage. Dual choice tests with a Y-tube olfactometer showed that plant volatiles from Chinese cabbage were more attractive to female C. plutellae than those from common cabbage when plants of both species were either intact or infested. In parallel to the increased parasitism on common cabbage following experience, oviposition in a host larva on this less-preferred plant significantly increased the response to volatiles emanating from that plant. These results indicate that host plants may strongly influence the foraging behaviour of C. plutellae, but their differential attractiveness to the parasitoid may be altered by experience of the parasitoid.

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the genetic similarity and structure of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), populations associated with maize and cotton crops in Brazil using amplified fragment length polymorphisms. Mean genetic similarity among populations was 0.45. The unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean analysis dendrograms did not separate populations of S. frugiperda into clusters related to the host plant in which the insects were collected. No genetic variation was observed among maize and cotton populations of S. frugiperda, suggesting that the same populations are injuring both crops in Brazil. This research validates the need for stewardship of crop-protection methods for managing S. frugiperda to reduce the incidence of pesticide resistance, due to the spatial and temporal overlapping of maize and cotton crops in some regions in Brazil.

Chironomids (Diptera) typically comprise the most abundant group of macroinvertebrates collected in water quality surveys. Species in the genus Cricotopus display a wide range of tolerance for manmade pollutants, making them excellent bioindicators. Unfortunately, the usefulness of Cricotopus is overshadowed by the difficulty of accurately identifying larvae using current morphological keys. Molecular approaches are now being used for identification and taxonomic resolution in many animal taxa. In this study, a sequence-based approach for the mitochondrial gene, cytochrome oxidase I (COI), was developed to facilitate identification of Cricotopus species collected from Baltimore area streams. Using unique COI sequence variations, we developed profiles for seven described Cricotopus sp., four described Orthocladius sp., one described Paratrichocladius sp. and one putative species of Cricotopus. In addition to providing an accurate method for identification of Cricotopus, this method will make a useful contribution to the development of keys for Nearctic Cricotopus.

Field experiments were conducted in the dry season of 1985–86 and the first and second rainy seasons of 1986 at Ibadan, Nigeria, to assess the level of damage and yield reductions caused by Eldana saccharina Walker to maize. Grain weight per plant in artificially infested plots was up to 36% lower than grain weight per plant in insecticide-protected plots. Artificially infested plots had significantly lower 100-grain weight than insecticide-protected ones. The regression coefficient obtained from covariance analysis revealed that 100-grain weight decreased by 0.125 g for each unit increase in the percentage of the stem tunnelled. Infestations of E. saccharina were found to increase significantly the incidence and severity of stalk rots.

Night-time observations on adults of Heliothis armigera (Hb.), and data from light-trap and hand net catches in irrigated and dryland crops, showed that both sexes flew and fed and females oviposited between 20.00 and 23.00 h. From then until 02.00 h both sexes were inactive, but. from 02.00 to 04.00 h the males flew above the crop in a ‘purposeful’ manner, while the females were stationary and releasing pheromone. During this period of high male and low female activity, copulation in cages, assembly of males to females in cages and copulating pairs on crop plants were all observed. Inseminated female H. armigera were collected in crops which were at a stage suitable for oviposition, while traps away from crops or near mature crops collected mainly virgin females. It is suggested that susceptible crops attract H. armigera adults and that, once within the crop, inseminated females are ‘trapped’ by suitable physiological cues from the plants. Identification of such cues could assist in the breeding of crop varieties resistant to H. armigera attack.

During 1964–65, 1,646 newly emerged females of Glossina pallidipes Aust., 1,898 of G. palpalis fuscipes Newst. and 2,528 of G. brevipalpis Newst. were marked and released in an area on the north-eastern shore of Lake Victoria in Uganda so that, by examination of those subsequently recaptured, the relation between physiological and calendar age could be determined. In the light of the results, records of physiological age and trypanosome infections in large numbers of wild-caught females of the same three species caught in the same area in 1962–63 were examined, together with published observation on the animals on which they fed, and the effects of age and food-animals on the incidence of infections were investigated.

Physiological age was determined by examination of the reproductive system and was expresses as the exact or approximate number of ovulations that had taken place. Infections with Trypanosoma were classified as brucei-type, vivax-type or congolense-type, and the last two as mature (infective) or immature, according to the sites in which trypanosomes were found in the flies. All brucei-type infections were regarded as mature.

The relation between physiological and calender age indicated that the length of the ovulation cycle was 11 days in G. pallidipes, 11 1/2 in G. brevipalpis and about 15 in G. palpalis fuscipes, but from other evidence that the last figure should have been about 11 days it is considered that ovulation was retarded in the released females of G. palpalis fuscipes.

The incidence of mature vivax- and congolense- type infections rose with age in all three species, beginning for the most part when flies were about a fortnight old. Brucei-type infections were rare and were found only in flies more than about 35 days old; nearly all flies with such infections also had one or both of the other types. The incidence of immature vivax-type infections rose with age up to about 25 days and then levelled off, which suggests that all eventually became mature. Immature congolense-type infections were rare.

G. pallidipes had the highest total infection rate and G. brevipalpis the lowest. The percentage of order flies in the samples was, however, greater in the later than in G. palpalis fuscipes, which suggests that age is not the sole factor determining infection rate. Food-animals appeared to influence it, since the infection rates of the three species were proportional to the percentages of meals obtained from Bovids.

The age at which females were inseminated was lowest in G. palpalis fuscipes, greatest in G. pallidipes and intermediate in G. brevipalpis. Abnormal ovulation cycles were rare in wild-caught flies, and few females that from their age should have been pregnant were found with an empty uterus.

The arrival of mosquitoes at human bait under natural conditions could be divided into three behavioural phases, the exploratory, the penetration and feeding periods. The duration of these periods was recorded in Mansonia richiardii (Fie), Anopheles plumbeus Steph., Aedes punctor (Kby.), Ae. detritus (Hal.), Ae. cinereus Mg. and Ae. cantans (Mg.). Adults of M. richiardii took the longest (about 4 min) and those of Ae. cinereus the shortest (about 2 min) time to obtain a blood-meal. Penetration by the mosquitoes' mouthparts was felt in about 17% of the feeds, and irritation was caused by about 18% of the mosquitoes during feeding. The natural host preferences of these, and 11 other species, were determined by precipitin tests on blood engorged mosquitoes. Adults of Culex pipiens L., C. torrentium Mart, Culiseta morsitans (Theo.) and C. litorea (Shute) were essentially avian feeders; three adults of the latter two species had also fed on unidentified reptiles. Most adults of the other species had fed mainly on mammals. There were few multiple feeds. Although the ability of a mosquito to take a blood-meal quickly from a host was recognised as important, other phenomena such as uninterrupted feeding, simultaneous feeding by large numbers of mosquitoes and host desensitisation to bites were also considered important in contributing to the success or failure of a mosquito in obtaining a blood-meal.

A description is given of the phlebotomine faunas of forests in north Pará State, Amazonian Brazil, that are endemic for ‘pian bois’-type dermal leishmaniasis of man caused by Leishmania braziliensis guyanensis. As judged by collections from human baits, mammal-baited traps, CDC miniature light traps and from various resting sites, only the females of Lutzomyia umbratilis Ward & Fraiha have the habits (both arboreal and terrestrial) and abundance (periodic, seasonal and spatial) consistent with being a major vector to man of Leishmania b. guyanensis. Man is at risk of infection by the bite of Lutzomyia umbratilis at any time of the year if he disturbs the females from their daytime resting sites (on and around the bases of the larger forest trees) or if he remains in the forest between late afternoon and dawn (1700–0700 h).

Work at East Malling, Kent, between 1952 and 1963 on the biology of Harpalus rufipes (Deg.) (Carabidae), the strawberry seed beetle, is described in detail, and briefer notes are given on the life-histories of H. aeneus (F.), Feronia melanaria (Ill.) and F. madida (F.), which are less abundant but may also damage strawberries. Soil samples for larvae were washed over suitable sieves, those for pupae and adults were carefully searched in the field. Soil sampling showed that adults of H. rufipes colonised strawberry fields only during the fruiting period, weedy arable land and grassy situations being preferred at other times. By soil sampling, it was found that larvae of H. rufipes hatched from eggs laid in weedy soil in late summer, and evidence from pitfall trapping showed that the first two instars were sometimes active on the soil surface from August to December, before penetrating to a depth of 6–18 in. to overwinter. Development was resumed in April, but the larvae remained and the pupae were subsequently found at the overwinter depth in the soil, the larvae presumably feeding on the seed of fat hen (Chenopodium album) lodged in worm burrows. Third-instar larvae occurred from April to July, and adults emerged soon after. In the laboratory, adults lived for a further two years, hibernating in winter, and becoming active and breeding each summer. Laboratory observations on oviposition periods, fecundity and feeding were also made. Larvae, which in the field were mostly found associated with plants of fat hen, fed on germinating seeds of several plants in the laboratory but growth was most rapid when they were reared on the germinating seed of fat hen.

The life-cycles and habits of the three other species are briefly described and compared with those of H. rufipes, the seasonal occurrence of the different stages in the life-cycles of all species being shown in a table.

The effect of constant temperature on development, reproduction and population growth of Thrips hawaiiensis (Morgan) reared on a diet of pollen and honey solution was studied. Although hatchability and survival rates from egg hatch to adult were higher than 79% between 15 and 25°C, they were lower than 55% at 10 and 30°C. Developmental rates increased linearly as rearing temperature increased. It was estimated that 153.8 degree-days, above a lower threshold temperature of 10.4°C, were required to complete development from egg to adult oviposition. According to these figures, between 11 and 18 generations of T. hawaiiensis could have developed annually under outdoor conditions in western Japan, between 1990 and 1999. Mean adult longevity decreased with increasing temperature, from a maximum of 102.7 days at 15°C to a minimum of 27.8 days at 25°C. The mean fecundity on pollen and honey solution was highest at 20°C with 536.9 eggs per female. The highest intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) 0.208 was observed at 25°C.

Two commercial cultivars of tomato, Alta and Peto 95, the accession line number LA716 of Lycopersicon pennellii and lines 94GH-006 and 94GH-033 (backcrosses between Peto 95 and LA716), with different leaf acyl sugar contents were screened for resistance to Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring (corresponding to the Spanish B-biotype of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius)), in greenhouse- and field-no-choice experiments. There was no oviposition on LA716 (with the highest acyl sugar content) while the greatest fecundity and fertility values were observed on the cultivar Alta (no acyl sugar content). However, no clear relationship was found between the low acyl sugar content in the other tomato cultivars tested and whitefly reproduction. Thus, resistance to B. tabaci did not appear to correlate with acyl sugar content below a threshold level of 37.8 μg cm-2leaf. In a greenhouse choice-assay, B. tabaci exhibited reduced host preference and reproduction on the commercial tomato cultivars Motelle, VFN8 and Ronita all of which carry the Mi gene resistance to Meloidogyne nematodes and the aphid Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas), than on the Mi-lacking cultivars Moneymaker, Rio Fuego and Roma. When data of Mi-bearing plants were pooled, the mean values for daily infestation and pupal production of B. tabaci were significantly lower than those of Mi-lacking plants. This reflected a level of antixenosis- and antibiosis-based resistance in commercial tomato and indicated that Mi, or another closely linked gene, might be implicated in a partial resistance which was not associated either with the presence of glandular trichomes or their exudates. These findings support the general hypothesis for the existence of similarities among the resistance mechanisms to whiteflies, aphids and nematodes in commercial tomato plants.

Temperature is arguably the most important abiotic factor influencing the life history of ectotherms. It limits survival and affects all physiological and metabolic processes, including energy and nutrient procurement and processing, development and growth rates, locomotion ability and ultimately reproductive success. However, the influence of temperature on the energetic cost of development has not been thoroughly investigated. We show that in the diamondback moth [Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae)] rearing temperature (range10–30°C) affected growth and development rates, the energetic cost of development and fecundity. Rearing at lower temperatures increased development times and slowed growth rate, but resulted in larger adult mass. Fecundity was lowest at 10°C, highest at 15°C and intermediate at temperatures of 20°C and above. At a given rearing temperature fecundity was correlated with pupal mass and most eggs were laid on the first day of oviposition, there was no correlation between total eggs laid and adult longevity. The highest production cost was incurred at 10°C; this decreased with increasing temperature, was minimized in the range 20–25°C, and then increased again at 30°C. These minimized production costs occurred at temperatures close to the intrinsic optimum temperature for this species and may reflect the rearing temperature for optimal fitness. Thus at sub-optimal temperatures greater food resources are required during the development period. Predicted increased temperatures at the margins of the current core distribution of P. xylostella could ameliorate current seasonal effects on fecundity, thereby increasing the probability of winter survival leading to more resilient range expansion and an increased probability of pest outbreaks.

Several whitefly species (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) are cosmopolitan phloem-feeders that cause serious damage in numerous agricultural crops. All whitefly species harbor a primary bacterial symbiont and a diverse array of secondary symbionts which may influence several aspects of the insect's biology. We surveyed infections by secondary symbionts in Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) and Siphoninus phillyreae (Haliday) from areas in the east cost of the Adriatic Sea. Both the Middle East-Asia Minor 1 (MEAM1) and Mediterranean (MED) B. tabaci genetic groups were detected in Montenegro, whereas only the MED was confirmed in Croatia. Trialeurodes vaporariorum and S. phillyreae were found in all areas surveyed. MEAM1 and MED exhibited similarity to previously reported infections, while populations of T. vaporariorum from Montenegro harbored Rickettsia, Wolbachia and Cardinium in addition to previously reported Hamiltonella and Arsenopnohus. Siphoninus phillyreae harbored Hamiltonella, Wolbachia, Cardinium and Arsenophonus, with the latter appearing in two alleles. Multiple infections of all symbionts were common in the three insect species tested, with some reaching near fixation. Florescent in situ hybridization showed new localization patterns for Hamiltonella in S. phillyreae, and the morphology of the bacteriosome differed from that observed in other whitefly species. Our results show new infections with bacterial symbionts in the whitefly species studied. Infections with the same symbionts in reproductively isolated whitefly species confirm complex relationships between whiteflies and bacterial symbionts, and suggest possible horizontal transfer of some of these bacteria.

Thirty-five species of mosquitoes (10 782 adults) were caught in modified CDC light-traps during the 27-week rice cultivation cycle at Ahero, Kenya, in the period September 1972 to March 1973. Only 0·8% were blood-fed and 5·1% gravid, indicating that the traps were sampling newly emerged adults. During weeks 1–7, before rice seedlings were transplanted, catches were small, but increased markedly from then until harvest (week 20). Two groups of mosquito species were recognised: the first, including Mansonia uniformis (Theo.), M. africana (Theo.) and Mimomyia splendens Theo., bred throughout the rice cycle; the second, including Anopheles gambiae s.l., A. pharoensis Theo., A. ziemanni Grünb., Culex poicilipes (Theo.) and C. antennatus (Becker), were affected by water depth and height of the rice crop. The slurry of shallow muddy pools which follows transplanting stimulated intense breeding of A. gambiae and A. pharoensis. Once the young plants were established, reflooding of the fields and subsequent growth of water plants and algae favoured the breeding of A. ziemanni and C. poicilipes. Towards the end of the rice cycle large numbers of C. antennatus were caught. It is concluded that mosquito control by means of insecticides or by irrigation management would be possible.
