The presence of piscivorous fish has a significant effect on the structure of fish assemblages. Exotic, piscivorous largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) have been introduced to a number of Japanese farm ponds that were originally characterized by a high level of biodiversity. We evaluated the effects of exotic bass on the structure of the fish assemblage following their introduction into the farm ponds. We collected fish and measured environmental conditions in 14 ponds of northeastern Japan. The species richness of pond-dwelling fish assemblages was negatively correlated with the relative abundance of exotic bass. In addition, the relative abundance of lentic cyprinid species (e.g., Rhodeus ocellatus ocellatus, Pseudorasbora parva and Carassius sp.) was negatively correlated with the relative abundance of exotic bass. The abundance of these species was also influenced by environmental factors, including transparency and/or coverage of aquatic vegetation, likely related to their influence on the predatory efficiency of exotic bass. Our results suggest that the structure of fish assemblages in farm ponds with exotic piscivorous fish was influenced by both biotic (i.e., predation) and abiotic factors and that some environmental factors mediate the effects of exotic bass on fish species richness and composition.

The relationship of size to MEP-2* genotype was investigated in 0+ juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in the River North Esk, Scotland. Significant temperature-associated MEP-2* heterogeneity was observed among tributaries and, in the two tributaries studied, size and MEP-2* genotype were significantly associated. No size association, or heterogeneity among tributaries, was found for the other allozyme polymorphisms screened. The results suggest that the association between size and MEP-2* variation, noted by others, is likely to be widespread in wild populations, and potentially linked to habitat temperature.

Wild Atlantic mackerel, Scomber scombrus, were kept in net cages and fed a high energy salmon diet rich in (n–3) polyunsaturated fatty acids for 8 months. Analyses of whole body and muscle were performed at regular intervals on 1 and 2-year-old fish. The percentage of lipid and dry matter increased in whole body and muscle as the fish weight incrcased from catch to market size over the course of the following year. In all groups of fish examined the sum of fatty acids (n–3) as the percentage of total lipid in muscle decreased from 33 to 26%, while the sum of monoenoic acids increased with 10% from 39 to 49%. Vitamin E concentration of muscle increased substantially during feeding. The oxidation status of the fish muscles was very good at the end of the feeding period, with thiobarbituric acid values of less that 3 µmol kg−1. At theend of the feeding experiment large fish to be sold at market were starved for two weeks. Analyses of the nutritional and oxidative state of muscle showed that transport, slaughter and storage did not affect the lipid content or the fatty acid composition. Low and stable thiobarbituric acid values were observed, while vitamin E content significantly decreased during processing and storage at −30 °C, which indicates that vitamin E was an effective antioxidant in mackerel muscle.

Seasonal growth of juvenile oysters (Crassostrea gigas) kept in an intensive upwelling system was studied from 1984 to 1986 in 60 to 90-day growth experiments. Saline ground water was used to produce Skeletonema costatum which was injected as food into the water supplying the upwelling system. Oyster density, water flow, phytoplankton concentration, temperature and frequency of food addition were controlled. Oyster growth was analysed with multidimensional contingency tables and correspondence analysis. The factors, in order of decreasing influence on growth, were temperature, food concentration and oyster density. A rearing strategy was deduced from the growth analysis for summer and winter. In summer, the density of 120,000 oysters/m2, the flow rate of 1 liter/d/oyster and the food concentration of 0.5 × 109 phytoplankton cells/litre gave the most interesting results. The oysters grew from 0.014 g to 2.2 g after 60 days. In winter, the heat exchanger was necessary to increase the temperature from the 5 °C naturally observed to the 11 °C required for valuable growth. Oyster density and food concentration were the same as in summer. For a flow rate equal to 3 liter/day/oyster, oysters grew from 0.01 g to 0.5 g within 100 days. The cost and profit computations were derived from these strategies. It was concluded that this type of nursery would be profitable in spring, summer, and autumn but not in winter due to the high cost of heating the water.

Acute toxicity of ammonia was investigated in four life stages of juvenile chub, Leuciscus cephalus (cyprinid fish): 1, 10, 20 and 30 days after the first feeding. The fish used for the toxicity test were reared intensively in a closed recirculation system. Each acute toxicity test duration was 96 h and lethal concentration LC1, LC50 and LC99 values were calculated for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h. The susceptibility of chub to acute ammonia toxicity decreased linearly with age and stage of development. The LC50 (48 h) values ranged from 0.62 mg L-1 of unionized ammonia nitrogen for one day after first feeding larvae to 1.73 mg L-1 for 30 days after first feeding ones. A significant linear relationship between chub larvae susceptibility to ammonia toxicity and both body weight and length was found. The critical level of unionized ammonia nitrogen for chub larvae was suggested as 0.49 mg L-1.

L'ichthyofaune continentale de la Guyane française comprend environ 330 espèces dulçaquicoles. Plusieurs d'entre elles possèdent des caractéristiques biologiques propices à leur élevage. Deux cypriniformes, Myleus rhomboidalis, et Leporinus friderici, trois perciformes, Astronotus ocellatus, Cichla ocellaris et Plagioscion squamosissimus, ainsi que trois siluriformes, Hoplosternum littorale, Brachyplatystoma vaillantii et Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum, sont présentés dans ce texte. Ces espèces peuvent convenir à différents systèmes d'aquaculture.

The Boreoatlantic gonate squid Gonatus fabricii is the most abundant squid in the offshore arctic and subarctic waters of the northern Atlantic. Adults are common in midwater while juveniles occur in surface waters close to the continents. As part of a research project focussing on the interactions among fish stocks off West Greenland we examined squid collections sampled with small pelagic nets in summer 1989 and in summer and autumn 1990 off Southwest Greenland. G. fabricii was by far the most abundant cephalopod species caught. We recorded a total of 698 juvenile specimens. During the summer cruise in 1989 the mantle lengths varied from 6 to 35 mm (n = 84); in summer 1990 they ranged from 10 to 48 mm (n = 542) with significantly larger body sizes in the southern part of the region. In autumn 1990 the mantle lengths ranged from 19 to 64 mm (n = 72) with largest animals again at the southern sampling sites. The data suggest growth rates for juvenile G. fabricii off West Greenland of 4 to 5.5 mm per month between July and November 1990.

The fatty acid profile of the galaxiid fish Galaxias maculatus (Salmoniformes) collected from an estuarine habitat (a river mouth), a freshwater creek and two land-locked freshwater lakes in Victoria, Australia, were investigated with a view to evaluating habitat influences on the fatty acid profile. Fish from the freshwater creek were unpigmented, fresh-run juveniles (referred to as whitebait), the others adult fish. The fatty acids that predominated in adult G. maculatus muscle were 16:0 and 22:6(n-3), and 16:0 and 18:1(n-9), respectively. In whitebait 22:6(n-3), 20:5(n-3) and 16:0 were predominant. Hopkins estuary fish had the highest amount of 18:2(n-6) but the lowest 18:3(n-3). In all galaxiid populations, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were the main group of fatty acids in total lipid in muscle, and accounted for more than 40 %, followed by saturates and monoenes. In landlocked populations, the amount of monoenes was lower than in other galaxiid populations. G. maculatus whitebait had significantly lower amount of saturates and the highest amount of n-3 fatty acids. The ratio of n-3 to n-6 PUFA ranged from 4.6 (Hopkins estuary) to 7.6 (whitebait), and the former differed significantly from all the other populations. The main fatty acids predominating in the liver of galaxiids from landlocked (Lake Bullen Merri) and estuarine populations were 16:0, 22:6(n-3) and 18:1(n-9), and generally reflected the corresponding pattern in muscle. A principal component analysis of the fatty acid composition of muscle samples confirmed and highlighted the distinct fatty acid profile of the populations investigated, when three groupings could be discerned. The study suggests that in addition to the diet, other habitat related factors may influence the fatty acid profile in catadromous G. maculatus.

The rates of growth and nitrogen efflux (total nitrogen and ammonia) of individual C. gariepinus ($\bar{x}~=~32.2$ g; S.D. = 4.8 g) kept under 4 feeding regimens, following a 48 h imposed fast (phase l), were measured periodically. In phase 2 (35 d), groups A, B and C were fed a 49.75%, 45.55% or 41.10% protein diet respectively at a ration of 0.5% body weight (1 d−1) Group D were not fed. In phase 3 (25 d) all groups were fed the 41.10% diet. In phase 1, the ammonia efflux rates were lower than any of the values found in either phase 2 and 3. In phase 2, group A (49.75%) had a higher mean ammonia efflux rates than the other groups and ammonia comprised 60-100% of the total nitrogen efflux in all groups. Group D showed a direct relationship between ammonia efflux rate and length of fast. In phase 3, refeeding with the 41.1% protein diet caused the ammonia efflux rates of groups B and D to converge within 7 days to values no different from those of group C, but group A maintained a significantly higher mean value until day 25. During phase 2, the growth rates in B (45.55%) were greatest, but, none of the among groups differences were significant. Group D fish (unfed) lost approximately 30% of their initial weight during phase 2. Nitrogen efflux rates, notably ammonia, showed a pattern of excretion that was directly related to the protein content of the diet, but that the source of dietary protein, dietary energy and the total available energy also influenced nitrogen metabolism. The small differences in growth found were related to between diet differences in composition. The weight loss in the unfed group of fish was probably attributable to the utilisation of lipid and/or protein reserves as metabolic fuels.

Skin and gill parasites found in juvenile Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) caught in the Bay of Biscay, northeast Atlantic, were examined with the aim of finding biological tags. The degree of infection of different microhabitats was analyzed and the annual prevalence by species of parasite obtained. Of the specimens examined, 98% had parasites, and the gills were by far the most infected microhabitat, followed by the skin and the pectoral fin. Within the gill cavity, parasites were most commonly found in the afferent margins of the primary lamellae. Three species of Copepoda were identified, two species of Monogenea, and eleven Digenea. Thus, ten species (Digenea: Didymozoidae) and a new host record for Copiatestes thyrsitae (Digenea: Syncoeliidae) were recorded in Thunnusthynnus. The suitability of the different external parasites found is discussed and gill didymozoids are put forward as useful biological tags. Confusing taxonomy within this digenean family makes species identification of the different morphotypes difficult. However, their habitat specificity in hosts can be a good tool to differentiate morphotypes and characterise host individuals.

We examined whether escape response performance and mitochondrial capacities could reveal differences created by feeding scallops, Argopecten purpuratus, mono-specific algal diets composed of either Chaetoceros calcitrans or Isochrysis galbana (variety T. iso) hereafter T. iso. Before and after feeding scallops with these diets, we assessed force production in vivo to evaluate escape response performance (initial and repeat). We measured oxidative capacities of mitochondria isolated from the adductor muscle and from the male and female portions of the gonad. Initial escape response performance was reduced more by the C. calcitrans diet than by the T. iso diet. Repeat escape responses, which require aerobic recuperation, were reduced by both treatments. The oxidative capacity of mitochondria isolated from muscle and female gonad was markedly lower in scallops fed C. calcitrans than in those fed T. iso. Flux through complex I–IV and through complex IV was also lower in mitochondria from muscle of scallops fed C. calcitrans than in those fed T. iso. Muscle aerobic capacity, assessed by citrate synthase activity, was lower in scallops fed C. calcitrans than in those fed T. iso. Despite the marked differences in fatty acid (FA) composition of the algal diets, the FA composition of mitochondrial phospholipids differed little between scallops fed C. calcitrans and those fed T. iso. Both escape response behaviour and mitochondrial capacities changed with feeding mono-specific diets. The simplicity of measurements of scallop escape responses suggests this as a practical means of evaluating the status of scallops for the two monoalgal diets tested.

This presentation describes a series of experiments designed to study the biology and fisheries of decapod crustaceans in the Western Mediterranean in the framework of research programmes carried out by Instituto de Ciencias del Mar (CSIC) in Barcelona. The results have been used to highlight the importance of bio-ecological studies on commercial species in instituting fisheries management programmes. A series of examples are used to demonstrate how integrating knowledge of the effects of biological and ecological aspects (growth, reproduction, migrations, aggregations, environmental factors, sexual dimorphism, behaviour, etc.) in the fisheries, is essential to avoid sampling errors and errors in stock assessment. Finally, potential directions for future research in this area are discussed.

We tested the hypothesis that along with gill Na+K+ATPase activity reduction, branchial energetic metabolism of brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis) is altered during sexual maturation. Maturing and sterile fish were transferred from freshwater (FW) to seawater (SW). The activity of gill pyruvate kinase (PK), cytochrome C oxidase (COX), citrate synthase (CS) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was measured at different intervals. Following 1 month in SW, twofold increases in Na+K+ATPase activity were recorded in all groups, while mean metabolic enzyme activities were sharply reduced (COX: 0.051 ± 0.029 to 0.036 ± 0.018; PK: 1.670 ± 0565 to 1.210 ± 0.340 LDH: 2.245 ± 0.690 to 1.642 ± 0.381 μmol mg–1 protein min–1). Interestingly, during this period, no mortality occurred. After 5 months, comparison of Na+K+ATPase:CS and Na+K+ATPase:LDH ratios of mature and sterile fish held either in FW or SW, indicated that the response of Na+K+ATPase largely exceeds the response of the metabolic enzyme apparatus in hyperosmotic conditions. Hence, the reduced iono-osmoregulatory capacity and higher mortality observed in SW-maturing fish during the reproductive season appears to be mainly attributable to Na+K+ATPase activity reduction rather than the alteration of gill metabolic capacity, since no concurrent increase of metabolic enzyme activity with Na+K+ATPase activity occurred.

We tested cross-species amplification of 68 existing microsatellite loci in 6 species of the Sparidae family: Acanthopagrus butcheri, Sparus aurata, Pagrus auratus, Chrysophrys major, Pagellus bogaraveo, Pagellus erythrinus and one species of Bothidae, Paralichthys olivaceus. Of the 68 loci screened, sixteen were found to be polymorphic when tested in 20 individual black sea bream, Acanthopagrus schlegeli. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 9, and the observed and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.55 to 0.95, and from 0.58 to 0.87, respectively. Our results show that cross-species amplification of known microsatellite loci in closely related species is a highly promising source of microsatellite markers for A. schlegeli.

The larval stages of Anguillicola crassus, a parasite of the swimbladder of eels, are described, using light and scanning electron microscopy. Second-stage larvae in copepods are characterized by a globular cephalic end and third- and fourth-stage larvae by an apical selerotized ornamentation consisting of two U-shaped median pieces. Third- and fourth-stage larvae are difficult to distinguish from each other using light microscopy because the third moult has never been observed and there are no obvious characters differentiating the two stages. Three characters, however, observed by using high magnification of light and scanning electron microscopy are considered as distinctive between the two stages, namely presence or absence of deirids and lateral alae and differences in the structure of the cuticle. These morphological characters will permit epidemiological studies at the larval level.

Sampling efficiency (p), estimated from the Zippin depletion model and the percentage of fish obtained during first runs (single-pass electrofishing), which is also named relative abundance (C1), calculated as the ratio of C1 to estimated density for a site (Ce), were analysed in five contiguous sites in a small lowland stream in Poland over 23 years. The sampled reach was unregulated during the first decade of the study period, but regulated by weirs and sluices in the latter 13 years. The sites were populated with 17 fish species during this period. Sampling efficiency p calculated for all species did not differ significantly between the five sites in any given year, between benthic and non-benthic species, or between the natural and regulated periods. Differences in p were only observed between some species. C1 differed significantly between large and small species and, except for roach, was not dependent on the number of runs. Results indicate a high stability of both sampling indices in this small stream, despite changes in channel morphology after regulation: information which could be useful for future sampling research in streams.

Conservation of threatened large sharks and management of shark-human interactions requires an understanding of shark occurrence and movement patterns. Here, we present the first catch, movement and behaviour data of adult bull sharks, Carcharhinus leucas, in New Caledonia. Amongst six adult C. leucas tagged with passive acoustic tags, four females were caught in coastal waters while males were only found at an isolated oceanic barrier coral reef over 100 km from the nearest river mouth. Two females were monitored in the southern New Caledonia lagoon for 707 and 208 days respectively and displayed classical transient behaviour and sporadic short-term residency around a coastal reef bay, with movements in and out a river detected prior to spring. Adult C. leucas in New Caledonia may develop a sex-based spatial segregation with an atypical presence of adult males in oceanic environments, probably influenced by the unique estuarine-marine continuum of the New Caledonian great lagoon.

Sessile animals that live on the foreshore undergo tidal cycles, and have to facevariations in physical and chemical parameters such as oxygen concentration. Duringemersion, availability of dissolved oxygen can be lowered for bivalves, which have only asmall reserve of seawater inside their closed shell. Differences in oxygen concentrationare thus expected to lead to modifications of the metabolism, including changes inmitochondrial activity. Previous studies investigated air exposure under extremeconditions, which do not always reflect environmental conditions these invertebrates haveto cope with. In this study, oxidative capacities of gill mitochondria of the oysterCrassostrea gigas were studied during a tidal cycle period, bycomparing oysters collected after emersion and immersion. Only minor differences werefound in state 3 (oxidative phosphorylation) or state 4 (non-phosphorylating oxygenconsumption) rates between the two conditions. Similarly, no difference was observed incytochrome c oxidase activity or in oxygen consumption related to maximalelectron flux through complexes I-IV, II-IV and IV. While capacities of substrateoxidation were maintained in both emersion and immersion conditions, capacity ofmitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP) was significantly lower in oysterssampled during emersion. These results suggest that although C. gigascould maintain aerobic metabolism during emersion period within a tidal cycle inits environment, energy producing mechanisms are affected.

Whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L.) larvae from Léman (= Lake Geneva) and Lake Bourget (France) have been successfully mass reared in tanks of 50-60 l when fed exclusively on dry experimental and commercial diets. In spring water at 10 °C for three initial densities (100-200-400/l) tested, the survival at 35 days fluctuated generally between 30 and 50%. The final number and biomass harvested has been improved by the use of higher water temperature (14 °C) or by stocking with high initial density (200-400/l) at 10 °C. In Lake Leman, temperature appeared to be the key factor controlling the results of coregonid larvae rearing in submerged illuminated net cages (6 m3) stocked with 50 000 yolk sac fry and harvested at the end of spring. The results fluctuated greatly when stocking was too early (middle of February to beginning of March). They were improved by delaying stocking, to the period "mid-Marc - carly April" for yolk sac fry or to "end of March-April" when fry prefed on dry diet were used.

Pirapatinga given submaximal rations grow faster when fed at night than when fed during daylight hours. It was hypothesised that these fish were day–night conformers, with a nocturnal acrophase, and expended more energy during daytime feeding. In order to test this hypothesis, telemetry was applied to study the behaviour of cultured pirapatinga (stocking biomass of 40 kg·m–3; 27 ± 1 °C; 6 mg O2·L–1; 13.5 L/10.5 D) under three feeding schedules (diurnal versus nocturnal feeding [12 g·d–1·fish–1 over 10 h] versus fasting) that were evaluated in succession over 1 week each. This implied a feasibility study to test the adequacy of tagging fish with surgically implanted transmitters (ventrolateral incision, posterior to the pelvic girdle). There was no mortality or tag loss over 12 months following surgery, and abdominal incisions healed within 4 weeks. Under all three feeding schedules, activity increased at dawn, peaked during daytime, decreased at twilight and reached a minimum during the late night. Diurnal and twilight activity levels were similar under all three schedules, whereas nocturnal activity was significantly lower with daytime feeding. These observations indicate that pirapatinga have a diurnal activity acrophase, which is little influenced by food availability, and imply that the higher growth of fish fed at night does not originate from lower energetic expenditures.
