There have been few studies realized that evaluate the effects of adopting different nutritional systems in more than one phase of cattle production on carcass and meat characteristics. This study was realized to evaluate carcass and meat characteristics from bulls submitted to different nutritional systems during two production phases. The experiment was conducted at Figueira’s farm during two production phases: I (cow–calf) – 80 calves (99.6±2.72 days of age and 109.7±2.99 kg of BW) with their mothers were randomly assigned into two supplemental diets: cow–calf mineral supplement (n=40) or cow–calf creep-feeding (n=40); II (stocker) – the same 80 calves (201.2±2.11 days of age and 190.2±3.37 kg of BW) were redistributed into two production systems: stocker pasture (n=40) or stocker feedlot (SF; n=40). After, all 80 animals were kept on a pasture system (III) for 290 days, and then finished in a feedlot system (IV) for more 33 days. Then, they were slaughtered at an average 764.2±3.06 days of age and at 499.2±3.33 kg of final BW. After slaughter, the average daily gain was calculated, and the carcass and meat characteristics were measured. The statistical model design used was completely randomized in a 2×2 factorial arrangement (two treatment groups on cow–calf phase and two treatment groups on stocker phase). The single effects between the groups in each phase and the interactions between both phases (cow–calf v. stocker) were analyzed. The results were compared by Fisher’s test, using the R statistical software. A cow–calf by stocker phases interaction occurred for carcass conformation and fiber diameter. For single effects, the greatest influences observed were in the stocker phase. The feedlot group was slaughtered 17 days earlier, with greater final BW (3.8%), hot carcass weight (5.7%), average daily gain (6.9%), dressing percentage (1.8%), carcass length (1.8%), carcass width (1.5%), longissimus muscle area (4.8%) and muscle depth (2.3%) than pasture group. The SF group also had influence on fat color; showing higher L* and lower b* values. These results reveal that bulls reared in feedlot at the stocker phase have higher muscle development and that the stocker phase has the greatest potential to influence carcass characteristics and meat quality.

Feed conversion ratio (FCR) in grow-finishing pigs is one of the most important determinants of pig farm profitability and production efficiency. In its simplest form, FCR represents the amount of feed used per unit weight gain of the pig. Yet, this approach entails various limitations hampering its practical applicability such as availability of accurate data and large variation in ways to adapt FCR values for different starting and end weight as well as mortality rates. Various stakeholders are using their own formulas to determine FCR creating a ‘definition nonconformity’ when comparing FCRs among farms. This study aimed to optimize the calculation of FCR through the use of participatory qualitative research. A multidisciplinary research group of 9 persons (animal scientists, veterinarians and agricultural economists) and a consulting group of 31 stakeholders (representing the Flemish primary sector, feed industry, pharma, genetic companies, large retailers, academia and policy institutions) were involved. The decision problem analysis started with a literature review, followed by 25 in-depth interviews and their analyses (NVivo 11™). This led to an additional literature review and the formation of focus (expert) groups that helped to formulate preliminary FCR formulas. Revision rounds between the research team and the stakeholders further fine-tuned the formulas with the final result being two distinct complimentary formulas that are fit for purpose. Both refer to carcass gain per kg feed intake (plain (CGF) and standardized (CGFstandardized)). The first formula (CGF), namely ${{{\it{number \, delivered \, pigs}} \times {\it{average \, warm \, carcass \, weight}} - {\it{number \, stocked \, piglets}} \times {\it{average \, piglet \, weight}} \times {\it{piglet \, carcass \, yield}}} \over {{\it{feed \, consumption}}}}$ is an objective representation of the animals’ performance. The second formula (CGFstandardized) was developed for farm benchmarking, incorporating a seven-step standardization process that corrects for mortality and ‘standardizes’ for a fixed (yet fictive) live weight trajectory of 25 to 115 kg. This second formula allows to compare farms (or batches of fattening pigs) with different weight trajectories and different mortality rates. Fermentative catabolism (FAAC) of dietary and endogenous amino acids (AA) in the small intestine contributes to loss of AA available for protein synthesis and body maintenance functions in pigs. A continuous isotope infusion study was performed to determine whole body urea flux, urea recycling and FAAC in the small intestine of ileal-cannulated growing pigs fed a control diet (CON, 18.6% CP; n=6), a high fibre diet with 12% added pectin (HF, 17.7% CP; n=4) or a low-protein diet (LP, 13.4% CP; n=6). 15N-ammonium chloride and 13C-urea were infused intragastrically and intravenously, respectively, for 4 days. Recovery of ammonia at the distal ileum was increased by feeding additional fibre when compared with the CON (P<0.05) but was not affected by dietary protein (0.24, 0.39 and 0.14 mmol nitrogen/kg BW/day for CON, HF and LP, respectively; P<0.05). Lowering protein intake reduced urea flux (25.3, 25.7 and 10.3 mmol nitrogen/kg BW/day; P<0.01), urinary urea excretion (14.4, 15.0 and 6.2 mmol N/kg BW/day; P<0.001) and urea recycling (12.1, 11.3 and 3.23 mmol nitrogen/kg BW/day; P<0.01) compared with CON. There was a rapid reduction in 15N-ammonia enrichment in digesta along the small intestine suggesting rapid absorption of ammonia before the distal ileum and lack of uniformity of enrichment in the digesta ammonia pool. A two-pool model was developed to determine possible value ranges for nitrogen flux in the small intestine assuming rapid absorption of ammonia. Maximum estimated FAAC based on this model was significantly lower when dietary protein content was decreased (32.9, 33.4 and 17.4 mmol nitrogen/kg BW/day; P<0.001). There was no impact of dietary fibre on estimates of small intestine nitrogen flux (P>0.05) compared with CON. The two-pool model developed in the present study allows for estimation of FAAC but still has limitations. Quantifying FAAC in the small intestine of pigs, as well as other non-ruminants and humans, offers a number of challenges but warrants further investigation.

The objective of this experiment was to compare the effects of two concentrate feeding strategies offered with a grass silage and maize silage diet on the dry matter (DM) intake, milk production (MP) and estimated energy balance of autumn calved dairy cows. Over a 2-year period, 180 autumn calving Holstein Friesian cows were examined. Within year, cows were blocked into three MP sub-groups (n=9) (high (HMP), medium (MMP) and low (LMP)) based on the average MP data from weeks 3 and 4 of lactation. Within a block cows were randomly assigned to one of two treatments (n=54), flat rate (FR) concentrate feeding or feed to yield (FY) based on MP sub-group. Cows on the FR treatment were offered a fixed rate of concentrate (5.5 kg DM/cow per day) irrespective of MP sub-group. In the FY treatment HMP, MMP and LMP cows were allocated 7.3, 5.5 and 3.7 kg DM of concentrate, respectively. The mean concentrate offered to the FR and FY treatments was the same. On the FR treatment there was no significant difference in total dry matter intake (TDMI, 17.3 kg) between MP sub-groups. In the FY treatment, however, the TDMI of HMP-FY was 2.2 kg greater than MMP-FY, and 4.5 kg greater than LMP-FY (15.2 kg DM). The milk yield of LMP-FR was 3.5 kg less than the mean of the HMP-FR and MMP-FR treatments (24.5 kg). The milk yield of the HMP-FY treatment was 3.6 and 7.9 kg greater than the MMP-FY and LMP-FY treatments, respectively. The difference in MP between the HMP sub-groups was 2.6 kg, which translates to a response of 1.4 kg of milk per additional 1 kg of concentrate offered. There was no significant difference in MP between the two LMP sub-groups; however, MP increased 0.8 kg per additional 1 kg of concentrate offered between cows on the LMP-FR and LMP-FY treatments. The estimated energy balance was positive for cows on the LMP-FR treatment, but negative for cows on the other treatments. The experiment highlights the variation within a herd in MP response to concentrate, as cows with a lower MP potential are less responsive to additional energy input than cows with a greater MP potential. Cows with a greater MP capacity did not substitute additional concentrate for the basal forage, which indicates an additional demand for energy based on ability of individual cows to produce milk.

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the peripheral cytokine expression could be affected by differences in fat thickness in healthy mares during the periparturient period (last weeks of pregnancy and first weeks of lactation). At the beginning of the 11th month of gestation, 18 mares with normal body condition score (BCS; 5) were divided into two groups with low (L; ⩽12 mm; n = 12) and high (H; >12 mm; n = 6) fat thickness. Blood samples were collected every 10 days from the 11th month of gestation to 20 days post partum. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were separated and tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interferon-γ (IFN-γ), interleukin-1α (IL-1α), -1β (ILβ), -2 (IL-2) and -6 (IL-6) gene expressions were performed by using reverse transcriptase PCR. TNF-α and IFN-γ expressions were affected by fatness group, as the sampling period influenced the expression of all cytokines with the exception of IFN-γ. The interaction between fatness group and sampling period tended to be significant (P < 0.10) only for IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-2. In H group, compared with L group, IL-1β and IL-2 significantly (P < 0.05) increased at parturition. TNF-α peripheral expression increased from parturition to reach the peak at +10 days (P < 0.05) only in H group. In conclusion, in normal BCS periparturient mares, small body fat thickness variations influence the peripheral cytokine expression, showing a possible role for cytokines in parturition and lactation, events strongly linked to adipose tissue availability.

Fifty entire male pigs between 7 and 28 days and 50 entire male pigs between 28 and 56 days of age' were given basal diets containing peanut meal as the protein supplement. These diets contained 4·5 to 6·1 g threonine per kg and were supplemented with graded additions of synthetic L-threonine.

It was found that the amount of threonine required for maximum performance and nitrogen retention was 6·6 g/kg dry matter (DM) between 7 and 28 days of age and 5·4 g/kg DM between 28 and 56 days of age. These values were calculated to correspond to 0·43 and 0·36 g threonine per MJ digestible energy.

The concentration of threonine in the blood plasma did not give a clear indication of the threonine requirement of the pigs.

Countries, which import a significant amount of semen, embryos and animals, are faced with the problem of how properly to evaluate the animals in the national evaluation system when information on the foreign parents is generally missing. Additional problems arise when the foreign parents obtain an evaluation, usually on the basis of progeny, in the country of import with the result that there are two published evaluations for the animals in question. This paper presents a post-iterative method of incorporating foreign information into home country evaluations. The foreign information is initially converted to the same scale and base as in the home country using procedures recommended by the International Bull Evaluation Service. The method consists essentially of calculating a combined evaluation for animals with home and foreign information as a weighted average of yield deviations, parent averages and progeny contributions from the foreign and home countries. The combined evaluations are used to adjust the evaluations of progeny on the basis of formulae derived from the usual mixed model equations. The same principles were used to combine reliabilities from the respective home and foreign reliabilities. The results from the application of the method to the United Kingdom (UK) Holstein Friesian population are presented. There was re-ranking of both bulls and cows, especially foreign bulls with few UK daughters.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of low food intake on post-weaning fertility and hormone concentrations in primiparous sows. One hundred and forty primiparous sows (Landrace × Large White) were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups: (A) restricted to 3 kg food per day during lactation and 2 kg food per day post weaning (no. = 36); (B) restricted to 3 kg food per day during lactation and ad libitum feeding post weaning (no. = 33); (C) ad libitum feeding throughout with a mean voluntary food intake of 3·7 kg/day during lactation (no. = 36); and (D) ad libitum feeding throughout with a mean voluntary food intake of 4·9 kg/ day during lactation (no. = 35). Litters were standardized at eight to 10 pigs at 2 days post partum and were weaned at 27·2 (s.e. 0·5) days post partum. After weaning, sows were observed twice daily for signs of oestrus and were mated on the day(s) of standing oestrus. Six sows from each group were fitted with indwelling jugular cannulae 2 days before weaning. Blood samples were collected 1 day before weaning (W−l), 1 day after weaning (W+l) and 4 days after weaning (W+4), and these sows were slaughtered on W+4. Ovaries were recovered, follicles and corpora lutea were counted, and folUcular fluid collected. Sows given food at a restricted level (groups A and B) lost more backfat during lactation than sows given food ad libitum (groups C and D) (P < 0·01). Piglet weaning weights, weaning to conception intervals and the proportion of sows ovulating by W+4 were not significantly different among groups. In sows that did not ovulate, numbers of large follicles were not significantly different among groups but the low food intake (groups A, B and C) sows had more medium-sized follicles than high food intake (group D) sows (P < 0·01). FolUcular fluid concentrations of oestradiol, progesterone and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) did not differ among groups (P > 0·05). Plasma non-esterified fatty acids concentrations were greater in groups C and D than in groups A and B on W−l, W+l and W+4. Serum insulin and plasma glucose concentrations were lower in groups C and D than in groups A and B on W−l and W+l, but were similar among groups on W+4. Serum growth hormone concentrations were lower in group D than group A and B on W−l and W+l but not W+4. Concentrations of IGF-1 in serum were greater in groups C and D than groups A and B on W−l and W+l but not W+4. It is concluded that low food intakes during lactation and post weaning affected body condition, serum hormones and metabolites and ovarian function of primiparous sows without dramatically affecting ovarian hormones or reproductive performance.

Genetic and phenotypic parameters were estimated for farmed red deer on eight farms distributed throughout the United Kingdom. Genetic parameters were estimated using restricted maximum likelihood (REML) analysis. Heritabilities for date of calving were low on seven of the eight farms (< 0–05), while repeatabilities were low to moderate (0·06 to 0·37). Heritabilities of all weights tended to be moderate to high on most farms (0·31 to 0·49; 0·22 to 0·89; 0·33 to 0·48; 0·37 to 0·45 and 0·37 to 0·90 for birth weight, weaning weight, mid-winter weight, turn-out weight and other weights respectively). The exception was farm 8 for which heritability estimates were very low (<0·08). This is attributed to inbreeding effects on this farm. Phenotypic and genetic correlations between post-weaning traits tended to be high, indicating selection at any stage of growth will be expected to lead to an increased growth at the other stages. Animals whose bloodlines originated in the forests of Eastern Europe (Yugoslavia, Hungary, Germany) were heavier at all stages indicating their usefulness as ‘terminal sire’ breeds. Hinds of mainland ‘European’ parentage also tended to calve earlier.

Eight diets based on barley and soya bean meal were formulated. Two basal diets, one of which included fish meal, were formulated to conform to the recommendations of the Agricultural Research Council (1981) for all amino acids except lysine. Four further diets were made by adding L-lysine to these diets, in two increments; the highest concentrations of lysine were also supplied in two further diets by the inclusion of a higher proportion of soya bean meal. Each diet was given ad libitum to 10 growing pigs, five castrated males and five females, which were housed and fed individually.

Measurements of performance were made over the weight range 22 to 55 kg. Carcasses were appraised after slaughter at a mean weight of 75 kg.

Addition of lysine, but not of soya bean meal, significantly increased daily food intake and carcass fatness. Daily growth and food conversion efficiency were not significantly affected. Because of the high food intake the daily lysine intakes on the basal diets greatly exceeded the suggested daily requirement and the results indicate that in such circumstances the response to the amino acid supplementation of an apparently inadequate protein may be negligible.

Two foods, distillers' wet draff and draff plus pot ale syrup, containing 207 and 256 g crude protein per kg dry matter respectively, were given as sole food at the maintenance level to four adult wether sheep. Two of the sheep were given draff and two draff plus syrup for a 28-day period; the treatments were then changed over for a second period. The copper contents of the foods were 17 and 30mg/kg dry matter for the draff and draff plus syrup respectively. Sheep are particularly susceptible to copper and care should be taken when feeding such by-products, but during these short-term trials there was no evidence of copper poisoning. Energy losses in the faeces and urine were measured for all sheep, and methane losses were measured in closed-circuit respiration chambers for two sheep on each treatment. The metabolizable energy values of the foods were 10·8 (s.e. 0·15) and 12·5 (s.e. 0·15) MJ/kg dry matter for the draff and draff plus syrup respectively. The proportions of gross energy intake lost as methane were 0·029 for the draff and 0·042 for the draff plus syrup; these were much lower than the values predicted by the commonly used equation.

Sixteen British Friesian-cross steers of early- or late-maturity types were reared on either a 16- or a 24-month system of production. The steers on the 24-month system were subjected to a reduced nutrient intake during two phases of growth: 1) during early growth when the steers were approximately 9 months old and 2) during a store period when the steers were 13 to 19 months old. Animals on the 16-month system were fed to appetite throughout. Blood sampling was carried out at various periods during growth and serum samples were analysed for growth hormone, insulin, prolactin, glucose and blood urea nitrogen. Serum growth hormone concentrations were elevated during reduced nutrient intake, whilst serum insulin concentrations fell. Serum prolactin followed a seasonal pattern, but was lower in the underfed steers. Serum glucose concentrations also tended to fall during underfeeding, but blood urea nitrogen results were inconclusive. Hormone concentrations were not influenced by the maturity type of the steer, suggesting that the hormones measured are not primarily involved in determining the differential growth patterns in steers of different maturity types.

Thirty six individually-fed pigs were used in a within-litter comparison of the 6 treatments of a 3 × 2 factorial experiment. The pigs were about 9 weeks old at the start and were slaughtered as their individual weights reached about 200 lb.

Three types of basal diet were given with and without a supplement of CuSO4.5H2O included at 0·1% (250 p.p.m. added Cu).The diets were based on (1) barley and fish meal, with 17% crude protein for pigs up to 103 lb. live-weight and 15·4 % from then on, (2) maize and soya (extracted soya bean meal), with about the same levels of protein and (3) maize and soya, but with only 13·4% crude protein for pigs up to 103 lb. and 11·9% for pigs of 103 lb. to 200 lb. Daily feed allowances were determined from a fixed scale based on live-weight.

Pigs given the high-protein maize-soya diets grew more rapidly, required less feed per lb. gain and had fatter carcasses than those given the barley-fish meal diets. This was probably because of the higher TDN content of the maize-soya mixture.

Pigs given the low-protein maize-soya diets grew less rapidly, required more feed per lb. gain and had fatter carcasses with smaller ‘eye’ muscles than those receiving the high-protein maize-soya diets, these being the usual effects of an inadequate supply of total protein or of an essential amino acid.

CuSO4.5H2O4 added as 0·1% of each of the three types of diet improved growth rate before 103 lb. live-weight but had no consistent effect on feed conversion efficiency. Between 103 lb. and slaughter the copper sulphate did not affect performance on the barley-fish meal or high-protein maize-soya diet, but in the low-protein maize-soya diet it reduced feed conversion efficiency and rate of gain by 5%. Although this interaction was not statistically significant it agrees with an observation made in Florida and warrants further investigation.

The effects of short-term exposure to high ambient temperatures on gas exchange, heat production (HE), respiration rate (RR) and rectal temperature were evaluated individually with boars of approximately 100 kg live weight. The boars were of different breeds with four of Yorkshire (YS), eight of Danish Landrace (DL), out of which three were found stress susceptible by the halothane test (DLH+), eight of Duroc (DR) and eight of Hampshire (HS) breeds. After 1 h rest in the respiration chamber at 17·0°C the gas exchange measurements started with al-h basal period at 17 °C, followed by 2h of heating during which temperature increased to 35·0 °C (period I) and then further to 39·7X1 (period II). Then cooling of the chamber started, and after 1 h (period III) temperature had decreased to 21·8°C, and after the 2nd h of cooling (period IV) temperature was 18·2 °C. The gas exchange was measured for each hour from 09.00 h (basal period) until 14.00 h (period IV). RR was recorded every 15 min. Rectal temperatures were measured when the animals were removed from the chamber. The gas exchange and HE increased slowly during period I but rapidly in period II, followed by decreasing values in the cooling periods. HS and DLH+ had considerably higher gas exchange and HE than other breeds in these two periods and the values remained high during period III. In period IV all breeds had gas exchange rates and HE below those of the basal period. RR increased slightly in period I and then a sharp increase followed during period II. Maximum RR was recorded in period III with an average of 183 breaths per min for all breeds. RR increased earlier and more steeply in HS and reached the highest mean value of 236 breaths per min. Four HS boars salivated heavily during heat stress and rectal temperatures of these animals were 39·7 °C when removed from the chamber compared with close to 39·0 °C for all other breeds. It was concluded that there were considerable breed differences in response to heat stress and that DLH+ and HS were more severely stressed than boars ofYS, DL and DR.

A simple model was derived relating the phenotypic effect (g) of a major gene to observed values of the population mean and variance for a trait, at specified values of the major gene frequency and at specified basal values of the population mean and variance (in the absence of the major gene). This model was applied to a total of 549 observed values of ovulation rate in ewes of the Cambridge breed at Bangor under a range of assumptions. The mean values of ovulation rate were 2·44 for 243 ewes of 1 year of age and 37·54 for 306 ewes of 2 and 3 years of age with a coefficient of variation for both age sets of 0·50.

The results indicate a minimum value for g, in this data set, of 1·07 for 1 year old and 1·72 for 2 and 3 year old ewes. The results are also consistent with a frequency value in the region of 0·3 to 0·4, with the absence of dominance and with a reasonable concordance with Hardy-Weinburg equilibrium. The results also indicate that the value of g varies according to the background phenotype since it is lower for younger as compared with older ewes.

Ninety-six October calving, multiparous Friesian dairy cows were given from week 2 of lactation perennial ryegrass silage ad libitum, supplemented with one of four compound foods, offered at a flat rate of 3 kg/day. The compound foods differed in crude protein (CP) concentration (210 (LP) and 350 (HP) g/kg dry matter (DM)), achieved by including fish meal at 50 and 250 kg/t respectively; and in metabolizable energy (ME) concentration (12·8 (LE) and 14·0 (HE) M/kg DM), achieved by adding protected fat (approx. 100 kg/t). There were no significant interactions between supplement type in terms of animal performance. Over an average feeding period of 152 days, milk yields were significantly increased by 0·49 kg/day per 100 g supplementary CP (P < 0·01) and 0·50 kg/day per MJ of supplementary ME (P < 0·05).

Increasing the level of supplementary CP had no effect on milk composition but significantly increased yield of milk protein (67 g/day). An increase in supplementary ME significantly reduced protein concentration in the milk (1·1 gjkg) but had no effect on protein yield. Yield of milk fat was significantly increased (76 g/day). The additional energy also significantly improved cow fertility in terms of a reduced interval from calving to both first service and conception.

The work performance of two teams of four donkeys (heavy, 680 kg and light, 460 kg) and one pair of Jersey crossbred oxen (646 kg) was compared when they ploughed 4 hi day on four types of soil (clay, redsoil, sandy soil and sandy clay) using two types of plough, a conventional ox plough (40 kg) and a lighter prototype, the ‘Walco’ plough (32 kg) on an experimental farm. Work parameters were also measured with farmers’ cattle and donkey teams ploughing on f arms in Matobo and Nkayi districts. Working speed, power and effective field capacity (ETC) were higher for the ox-team (1·03 m/s, 920 W and 14·5 h/ha for the conventional plough and 0·99 m/s, 745 W and 13·9 h/hafor the Walco plough) and the heavier donkey team (0·87 m/s, 689 W and 14·2 h/hafor the conventional plough and 0·87 m/s, 787 W and 17·3 h/hafor the Walco plough) than for the lighter donkey team (0·59 m/s, 461 W and 22·1 h/hafor the conventional plough and 0·64 m/s, 445 W and 23·4 h/hafor the Walco plough). Expressed as a proportion of live weight or metabolic live weight there were no significant differences in draught forces exerted between teams but power output per unit live weight was greater in the ox-team than in the light donkey team but similar to that in the heavy donkey team. The Walco plough required a lower force (742 N) to operate than the conventional plough (816 N) but apart from this did not have any marked advantages over the conventional plough. On-farm, team sizes of donkeys varied from three to seven animals (team weight 340 kg to 1007 kg) and cattle team sizes from two to four animals (team weights 558 to 1709 kg). Regardless of team number, the heavier teams tended to out-perform the lighter teams (speed range 0·63 to 1·08 m/s, power 395 to 1136 W, EFC 9·1 to 25 h/ha)) with one exception, a well trained team of two oxen (team weight 879 kg, speed 1·02 m/s, power 775 W, EFC 9·1 h/ha). Donkeys tended to plough at a slower pace than oxen, with a lower power output, although when weight differences between teams were equalized (four heavy donkeys compared with two oxen), then there was little to chose between the species. Results suggested that teams of three or more donkeys can effectively be used for ploughing on the soils tested. The results highlighted the importance that team live weight and training/experience have in determining work performance.

Whole-crop barley (cv. Midas) was harvested when the grain dry matter (DM) reached 640 g/kg and was treated with either anhydrous ammonia at 40 g/kg DM or propionic acid (30 g/kg DM) and stored in polythene-lined tower silos. Anhydrous ammonia and propionic acid preserved the early harvested barley whole crop but distribution of ammonia through the silos was not uniform. Coefficients of DM and starch losses from whole grains separated from the ammonia- or propionic acid-treated whole crops or from rolled barley grains and suspended in the rumen of steers in nylon bags weqe, after 42 h incubation 0.73,0.85,0.26,0.21 and 0.78,0.96 respectively. Coefficients of digestibility of the ammonia-treated (AWC), of the propionic acid-treated (PWC) whole crops and of a diet of rolled barley and ammonia-treated straw (RB) with the same grain to straw DM proportion as that in the whole crops were 0·62 (AWC), 0·55 (PWC) and 0K57 (RB). Daily live-weight gains (kg/day) of 350 kg Hereford × Friesian steers offered the diets for up to 100 days were 0·33 (AWC), ·0·61 (PWC) and 0·74 (RB) and DM feed intakes (kg/day) were 4·7,3·4 and 7·6 respectively.

1. An experiment was carried out with 24 individually fed castrated male, Large White pigs, to examine the effects upon growth and body composition of an anabolic steroid included in finishing diets of two protein levels.

2. There was a significant interaction between steroid and dietary protein level on the growth rate and food conversion efficiency. On the low protein diet growth rate and efficiency were improved by steroid treatment while with high protein intake the steroid significantly depressed growth. Analysis of the main effects showed no significant differences between steroid and protein means for food conversion efficiency and no significant difference between protein means for growth. There was a significant difference (P<0·05) for rate of growth in favour of the animals not receiving the steroid.

3. Steroid significantly improved the percentage of lean and the eye muscle area, but decreased the length of pigs. High protein feeding also improved the percentage of lean and the eye muscle area and also increased the length.

4. The results are discussed in relation to the use of steroids in other species, optimum time of application and the problem of ascertaining accurate physiological doses.

Three experiments were carried out to investigate the anabolic effects of androstenedione administered at various levels to female and castrated male lambs in one experiment and to entire and castrated male calves in two other experiments. Significant increases in growth were not effected in normally fed animals but a sex × dose level interaction was detected in female lambs. Under normal husbandry conditions androstenedione appears to have little application in meat production.
