The genetic contribution to temperament was assessed during the neonatal period in 172 newborn infants from 47 pairs of monozygotic (MZ) and 39 pairs of same-sex dizygotic (DZ) twins. Zygosity was not related to the neonatal temperament variables. Examination of the scores for twin concordance indicated significant within-pair concordance in temperament ratings, but MZ twins were not more like each other than DZ twins. The results suggested that neonatal temperament was influenced by environmental factors. Further analyses indicated that neonatal temperament was influenced by perinatal variables such as birth weight, 1- and 5-minute Apgar scores, and number of days spent in the hospital. It was concluded that there was no clear pattern of genetic influence on neonatal temperament, and that nonshared environmental factors were an important source of variance for temperament during this period.

In order to investigate changes in twinning rate during World War II and postwar years, when the people in Tokyo suffered from malnutrition, about 80,000 delivery records during 1924-86 at one hospital in downtown Tokyo were examined. The twinning rate decreased from 1.47% in the 1920s to 0.81% in the 1980s. During the 1940s, the rate was 1.03% for 1940-42 and 0.94% for 1948-49, but it dropped down to 0.70% for 1943-47. In 1945, when Tokyo was heavily bombed repeatedly to be burnt out, and the people suffered from severe malnutrition, only one case of twinning was found among 305 maternities at this hospital (0.33%). While the mean birth weight of term singleton babies was 2953 g in 1940-41, it decreased to 2918 g in 1943-47, especially to 2856 g in 1945. This change in birth weight evidenced that the nutritional conditions in Tokyo became worse in 1943-47. This report suggests that the twinning rate decreased also during this period in Tokyo when the people suffered from malnutrition.

A birth-record based Registry is nearing completion of some 8,000 pairs of twins born in Minnesota from 1936 to 1955, plus some 1,200 pairs of male twins born 1971-81. The middle-aged twins were recruited with graded incentives so that ease of recruitment could be measured; it was found that pairs concordant for ease of recruitment were no more similar than discordant pairs in education, socioeconomic status (SES), or a variety of personality and interest factors, ie, that selection bias may not be a problem in research with adult twins when contacts are only by mail. A 50% decrease in neonatal mortality from 1936-55 to 1971-81 was associated with an increase from 3.5 to 4.0 per thousand in the frequency of viable MZ twin births. The broad heritability of SES, educational attainment, fecundity, and risk for divorce ranges from 0.30 to 0.50, although all 4 variables are plainly multifactorial and the latter 2 both involve variance contributed by a second person. Investigators interested in making use of this research resource are invited to submit proposals.

The use of DNA restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) to analyze variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) sequences dispersed in the human genome, has become a powerful tool for the study of population genetics due to the very substantial polymorphism involved. Because the markers usually employed for twin zygosity determination (such as sex combination, placentation, HLA typing, blood group antigens, etc) may not be uniformly informative, we propose the use of synthetic olygonucleotides, representing VNTR “core” sequences, for the determination of zygosity in twins.

Ultrasonographic examinations were performed on 519 pregnant women in the first trimester at three hospitals in Tokyo from August 1985 to March 1987. Among 519 women, two fetal heart movements (FHMs) were comfirmed in six cases. In two of these six cases, one of two FHMs disappeared two weeks later, and these were considered the “vanishing twin”. In eight cases among those with ultrasonographic image of echo-free-space (EFS) in the uterus, the observed EFS was considered to be a probable empty gestational sac (GS-like-EFS-image). Seven of eight GS-like-EFS-images were observed in October-December (p < 0.01) and two “vanishing twin” cases were also observed in the same season. Spontaneous abortion occurred in 11 cases and these were also more frequently observed in October-November (p < 0.05). Some abortive factor is supposed to have prevailed in October-December. All six women having twin fetuses (including the “vanishing twin” cases) were born in January-May (p < 0.05) and those having GS-like-EFS-images or terminating their pregnancy in spontaneous abortion were also born more frequently in the same season. Twin-prone and abortion-prone characteristics of the women born in this season are considered.

The living habits of 289 twins in a one-year birth cohort beginning during pregnancy and followed up to adolescence were compared with those of 11,623 singletons and two sets of controls matched either by maternal factors and place of residence only or by these and perinatal morbidity, all from the same cohort. The twins went in for sports more often than the singletons or any kind of controls. A nonsignificant trend was found indicating that twins smoked less often than their matched controls. The twins also used alcohol less often than their controls. The intrapair similarities of twins were higher than the similarities of twins and either type of controls in all four variables tested: sports, smoking, use of alcohol, as well as having been drunk.

In order to examine the chronologic changes in genetic variance and heritability of anthropometric characteristics of Chinese infants in Taiwan, a total of 521 pairs of same-sexed twin neonates given birth in four major general teaching hospitals in Taipei City were studied. Based on the placental pattern and 12 red blood cell antigens, 428 MZ and 93 DZ twin pairs were identified and followed up to the age of one year. There was no significant genetic variance for all anthropometric characteristics adjusted for sex and gestational week before the age of six months. After adjusting for sex and gestational week, a significant genetic variance was observed at the age of six months, with heritability values of 0.51 (weight), 0.63 (head circumference), 0.77 (chest circumference), and 0.53 (arm circumference), as well as at one year, although with considerably lower heritability values. This implies that growth is dynamically determined by both genetic and environmental factors during infancy.

The biases in volutary participation by adult twins are well known but less attention has been paid to twin children where parents decide on participation and provide much of the information. Several aspects of reporting including the assessment of zygosity are compared in four large Australian data bases: 1) a nationwide compulsory (and hence representative) survey of literacy and numeracy; 2) a nationwide “Twins in School” survey of parents and teachers of twins run through Education Departments and AMBA, the parents organisation in conjunction with LaTrobe; 3) the LaTrobe Twin Study which is a longitudinal program involving frequent interactions between families and researchers, and 4) the Australian NHMRC Twin Registry which has surveyed a large sample of their families with twin children by mail. One potential bias comes when recruitment is on a continuing basis as in the LaTrobe Twin Study and the Australian Twin Registry when differences between “early” and “late” enrolling families arise. One difference between the four samples arose from parents being much more likely to contrast their twins and to report problems in one but not the other, whereas teachers' and psychologists' assessments of these same children generally reported much smaller intrapair differences. Future studies should have some common questions to provide comparative data on such biases. Key questions are proposed for this area, mainly on the perceived need for different forms of remediation, together with other recommendations about the minimal essential baseline data set for a registry.

Despite some evidence that genotype-environment interaction (G×E) effects may be involved in the variation observed in behavioral and biological traits, few attempts have been made to detect and quantify this component of genetic variation in humans. We propose that one way to achieve this goal is to challenge several genotypes in a similar manner, submitting both members of several MZ twin pairs to an ethically acceptable experimental treatment capable of inducing an adaptative response. In this situation, the G×E effect can be assessed with a two-way analysis of variance for repeated measures on one factor, the treatment effect. In this design, twins are considered nested within the pair, whereas the treatment effect is considered a fixed variable. The intrapair resemblance in the response to the treatment is quantified with an intraclass correlation coefficient computed with between-sibhips and within-sibhips means of squares. To illustrate this approach, changes induced by long-term endurance training were studied in 10 MZ twin pairs. Significant intrapair resemblance in the response of maximal oxygen uptake was observed, with about 7 to 8 times more variance between pairs than within pairs. This design with MZ twins may be helpful in the study of human variation for multifactorial phenotypes.

Source of data is “Survey on Socio-Economic Aspects of Vital Events – Plural Births in 1975”, including 12,392 twin pairs, 124 triplet sets, 7 quadruplet sets and 1 quintuplet set. Feal deaths were 3,285 for twins, 141 for triplets, 17 for quadruplets, and 5 for quintuplets, among which the numbers of birth defects were 78, 3, 0, and 0, respectively. Concordant twin pairs with the same category of birth defect were 20 among 56 pairs (0.36). As for the remaining 36 pairs, 2 pairs had different category of birth defects, 27 pairs had liveborn cotwins, and 7 pairs were both fetal deaths among which a twin had birth defect. The second-born twins had birth defects more frequently than the first-born twins among fetal deaths (28 vs 6).

In order to examine the genetic variance and heritability of temperament among Chinese infants in Taiwan, a total of 62 pairs of same-sexed twin infants given birth in four major general teaching hospitals in Taipei City were studied. Based on placentation and 12 red blood cell antigens, 44 MZ and 18 DZ pairs were identified. Temperament was assessed at the age of six months by the Chinese edition of Carey's Temperament scale. Significant genetic variance was observed for activity level, approach or withdrawal, intensity of reaction, quality of mood, and threshold of responsiveness, with a heritability of 0.64, 0.56, 0.74, 0.39, and 0.45, respectively. There was no significant intrapair difference in temperamental characteristics between monochorionic and dichorionic MZ twins.

Mathematics achievement test results have been collected for 22 MZ and 24 DZ same-sex twin pairs in the Swedish compulsory school. The twins were approximately 11-13 years of age and attended grades 4, 5, or 6. The twin pairs were part of a larger collaborative study between Israel and Sweden (the KAM-project). Teachers were asked how they planned and evaluated their work in the subjects Swedish and Mathematics. In addition to this, results for the twins on Maths tests given by the teachers in their regular work were collected. These tests were thus used by the teachers as an instrument to evaluate the educational process. Intrapair similarity for MZ and DZ twins has been compared for qualitative and quantitative aspects of the Maths tests. Different tests were used by the teachers but the same criteria have been used in the comparison. MZ twins are somewhat more similar than DZ twins for both the qualitative and quantitative aspects. Only one quantitative aspect, however, percentage of correct answers, shows a significant difference between the twin categories. A comparison was also made of intrapair similarity in classes, where the teachers differed according to planning and evaluation of their education. Irrespective of that, the MZ twins seemed to be more similar than the DZ twins in number of correct answers on the Maths tests. Educational implications are discussed.

This study examines the heritability of cigarette smoking, alcohol, and coffee consumption in 4,960 adult, male twin pairs (2,390 MZ and 2,570 DZ pairs) participants in an epidemiologic survey of the NAS-NRC Twin Registry conducted in the USA during 1972-73. Heritability estimates for smoking, alcohol and coffee use were calculated both before and after adjustment for shared variance between these behaviors and other demographic characteristics including socioeconomic status and an occupational adjustment score. The objective of the analysis was to determine the impact of adjustment for covariates on heritability estimates of smoking, alcohol and coffee use. Before adjustment, genetic effects in smoking, alcohol and coffee use accounted for 53%, 36%, and 45% of the variance, respectively. After adjustment, the corresponding estimates were 35%, 29%, and 36%. The fact that these estimates remained significant after adjustment for covariates leads to increased confidence about the role of genetic factors in substance use behaviors.

This article discusses the following areas of interest related to the obstetric care of multiple pregnancy: 1) methods of diagnosis and ultrasound, 2) pregnancy protection through adequate maternal nutrition, 3) mode of delivery, 4) discordant twins, and 5) assisted reproductive technology. The article also emphasizes the FIGO/WHO concerns regarding safe motherood and proposes a four point program to reduce perinatal death rates in multiple pregnancy. These elements are: 1) adequate primary health care including access to family planning information and technology, 2) prenatal care with referral of high risk patients to specialized centers, 3) the presence of trained personnel for all women in childbirth, 4) effective access to obstetric care for women who are pregnant, giving birth, or recently delivered.

The multiple birth family is more likely to have a dispute with the education system than with any other service. So many potential areas of conflict exist over the abilities and behaviour of multiples and over such issues as separation or keeping back one twin. One reason for disputes is the lack of good data to adequately reflect the different perspectives of parents and teachers and the differing needs of families: the same solution does not apply to all. To provide the first large-scale data base and building upon an initial survey of 85% of all primary school teachers in South Australia, the LaTrobe Twin Study and AMBA worked with Education Departments to set-up in each state Education Research Teams (ERTs) of parents of multiples who were also teachers. The ERTs were crucial in three phases. 1) Developing and circulating questionnaires and publicising the nationwide survey. 784 families and 1264 teachers of their children completed these questionnaires, many reporting that simply having to address the issues raised in the questionnaire was a valuable learning experience. 2) Exploring the data base. Issues arising included the very different bases on which parents and teachers judged separation desirable, with teachers emphasising the unsubstantiated claim that separation is essential to individual development. Separation became more common over the first three years of schooling but 20-25% of twins separated one year were back together the next. 3) Running regional meetings of parents, teachers and administrators to discuss the results and to pool experiences and plan policies at the local level. A need clearly exists to improve the level of consultation between families and school personnel and to ensure the widespread availability of information which identifies key issues in making decisions for that multiple birth family.

Data of 601 families with triplets and higher multiples have been collected. Since about nine years the number of higher-order births has been increasing enormously. The average pregnancy duration and the average birthweight of these mostly premature children have been declining from year to year. Despite the progress in neonatology, the death rate and the rate of handicapped children is very high. To prevent such disastrous outcomes, treatments for infertility should be performed only by physicians in centers with strong controls. Selective abortions are no regular solution to the problem of higher multiple gestation.

In order to examine the chronological changes in genetic variance and heritability of arterial systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) of Chinese infants in Taiwan, a total of 339 same-sexed twin neonates born in four major general teaching hospitals in Taipei City were studied. Based on placentation and 12 red blood cell antigens, 274 monozygotic (MZ) and 65 dizygotic (DZ) twin pairs were identified and followed up to the age of one year. Both SBP and DBP were measured by Doppler blood pressure monitor. Within-pair mean squares of SBP and DBP were consistently smaller in MZ than DZ twins at ages one month and over. The findings remained unchanged after the adjustment for the effects of age, sex, gestational age, placentation and physical state during blood pressure measurement. Falconer's heritability indices for adjusted SBP and DBP at ages two months and over ranged from 0.29 to 0.55 and from 0.27 to 0.45, respectively. The study indicates an important genetic influence on blood pressure during infancy.

As an extension of previous work on the risk of prematurity in singletons and on the social cost of twin births, an analysis has been carried out into the cost effectiveness of preventing premature delivery in twin pregnancies. The cost of prevention is assessed in terms of early diagnosis through ultrasound screening and of an extra 11 weeks of work leave to expectant mothers. When this cost is compared to the social cost involved in the transfer of newborns to neonatal intensity care units and in supporting handicapped children, it is concluded that the total cost of prevention corresponds to one-third of the long-term costs associated to lack of prevention.

Using therapeutic intervention, the psychological and behavioural factors in the development of language retardation in two pairs of 4-year-old MZ twins have been examined. Although some factors are common to those found in singletons with language retardation, the factors peculiar to the twin situation are highlighted.

In a previous longitudinal twin project a model was developed for studying heredity-environment interaction. One important environmental dimension in this model is permissiveness-restrictiveness. The purpose of the present study has therefore been to investigate perceived and imposed restrictiveness at the societal and classroom level and possible interactional effects on pupil behavior. Results are reported from grade 4 to grade 6 in Israeli kibbutzim and Swedish compulsory school. One major finding is that no systematic differences have been found between twins and controls in the two countries. In both Swedish schools and Israeli kibbutzim permissiveness-restrictiveness will vary depending upon perspective (perceived or imposed) and upon content (type of subject or rule-breaking activity). Preliminary within-pair comparisons for the Swedish twins are reported for different types of test results. In agreement with the model, logical abstract thinking as well as reading and mathematics achievement seem to be less influenced by hereditary factors in a restrictive educational setting than in a permissive one.
