Merten Reglitz proposes a new human right that ensures internet access for those who cannot afford it and protects that right from arbitrary interferences by those who would exploit it for harm. The first part of the book justifies the claim for this new right by showing how internet access is vital for the enjoyment of human rights around the globe. In the second part, Reglitz specifies the content of this right, assessing today’s standard threats to internet access. He recommends a minimum international standard of connectivity and explains how states have misused the internet. He documents how private companies already manipulate both internet access and content to maximise profit, and how lack of rights enforcement allows people to harm others online. The book establishes that a new human right to free internet access is essential to secure its role for the benefit and progress, not detriment, of humanity.

The dream of eternal youth and immortality has always fascinated human societies. Even today, this quest is the source of major financial investments, particularly for the development of anti-ageing drugs. To unravel the mysteries of longevity, scientists have long been observing and quantifying the lifespan of animals. These decades of extensive comparative biology research have documented the extreme diversity of lifespan on Earth and identified key ecological and life history factors driving this diversity and, more recently, molecular pathways that might modulate it. However, the maximum lifespan of a species is far from being an accurate representation of a species’ ageing trajectory, both biologically and demographically. For a given species, the changes in mortality risk over the life course can be complex, and the ageing process is much more accurately described by ageing parameters, such as the age of onset of actuarial senescence and the rate of actuarial senescence. This chapter argues that current research in the comparative biology of ageing should now focus on the diversity of actuarial senescence patterns documented across the tree of life, as well as the species-specific causes of death, to identify key genetic and physiological determinants associated with delayed actuarial senescence or low actuarial senescence rate. Just a few years ago, such research projects would have seemed unrealistic, but the recent development of omics tools, coupled with the increased availability of demographic data for a wide range of species with contrasting life histories, lifestyles and habitats make such exciting comparative analyses now achievable and full of promise.

The term “grace” refers to unmerited gifts of God, among which might be gifts of knowledge. Does God offer knowledge over and above what we could have learned just through the still earlier gift of our inbuilt reasoning powers? At stake is the authenticity of the deeds, and the truth of the teachings, recorded in Holy Scripture. Thomas Aquinas always takes natural reason as far as he can before turning to what God has revealed by grace; he wants us to trust Revelation, but only authentic Revelation. Now, though, he turns the inquiry around. In order to know all that we need to know about God, do we need His grace at all? This inquiry amplifies the one in Question 1, Article 1.

We describe the AdS/CFT correspondence, obtained from string theory in certain backgrounds, in a decoupling limit. We also consider the M theory cases of gravity duals and then the gravity duals of N extremal Dp-branes. In the Penrose limit of supergravity solutions, we obtain pp waves. The Penrose limit can also be taken on the isometry group and algebra.

High-end audio systems aim to reproduce the original sound of music performed in physical spaces. They are an intersection of aesthetic art and emotions, a culture of listening to music in ones’ preferred genres and a system of components or machines that are designed by technologists of acoustics, electrical engineering and material science. There is an abundance of scientific research on sound and acoustics from engineering and physics that discusses the engineering of good sound on the basis of quantitative, parametric measures for the human cognition of listeners (Pinch and Bijserveld 2012; Powell 2010). There is a dearth of research on how hi-fi aficionados determine what really counts as ‘hi-fi’, however. This chapter empirically investigates the high-end audio equipment market. It applies perspectives from the pragmatist literature of valuation to probe the valuation practices of actors and agents using data from field interviews and observations, and archive and online documents.

Illustrations are a visual staple in life science communication. Despite being commonplace, they are in many ways a blackbox. They mask the creative – and scientific – decisions that go into making them. They present an end product that says, as it were, “this is how you look through life to its essence.” The use of precise lines and explicit shapes helps to convey this scientific authority. In contemporary illustrations, pseudo-details such as colors and dimensions further prove that “this is what life looks like.”

Thus Jesus prayed after the last supper. John set these words as the culmination of Jesus’ teaching, and they are about participation in the divine. The chapter is often called ‘the high priestly prayer’, and Hebrews shows that Jesus was proclaimed as a great high priest (Heb. 4:14). There are several elements in the prayer that suggest a temple setting – for example, ‘Father, glorify thou me in thy own presence, with the glory which I had with thee before the world was made’ (John 17:5).

The divine presence was located in the holy of holies. This was the innermost part of the tabernacle (Exod. 40:18–21) or of the temple which was modelled on the tabernacle (1 Kings 6:20–1).
