Glauconites in early ankerite concretions, ferroan calcite-cemented sandstones, and uncemented sandstones in the first Wilcox sandstone of the Lockhart Crossing field, Livingston Parish, Louisiana, show a progressive substitution of Fe for octahedral Al with increasing diagenesis. An octahedral Fe content of 0.50 atoms was calculated from glauconite located in early ankeritic concretions. Octahedral Fe averaged 0.60 and 0.90 atoms in later ferroan calcite-cemented sandstone and uncemented sandstone, respectively. Corresponding octahedral Al averages were 1.16, 1.03, and 0.67, respectively. A systematic increase in average interlayer K from 0.49 to 0.54 to 0.61 was also observed, with apparent increases in diagenesis. All element determinations were made with an electron microprobe and recast on an anion equivalent basis to structural formulae based on the O10(OH)2 unit. The clay preserved in the early ankerite concretions was found to be an illite/smectite containing about 20% expandable layers, and the mineral in the glauconite pellets from uncemented areas of the sandstone, an ordered glauconite. “Minus cement” porosities of the sandstone indicate that glauconitization may have taken place at burial depths greater than 0.6 to 1.8 km, but the mechanism for the incorporation of Fe3+ in the glauconite at that depth is not apparent.

Transmission electron microscopy has been used to characterize coexisting pyrophyllite and muscovite in low-grade metamorphosed pelites from Witwatersrand and northeastern Pennsylvania. The Witwatersrand sample consisted largely of porphyroblasts of interlayered muscovite and pyrophyllite in a fine-grained matrix of the same phases. In both textures, muscovite and pyrophyllite occurred as interlayered packets (with apparently coherent interfaces) from about 300 Å to a few micrometers in thickness, with no mixed layering. Their compositions were determined with a scanning transmission electron microscope to be

The compositions of these coexisting pyrophyllite and muscovite define a solvus with steep limbs and extremely limited solid solution. Illite is a white mica, intermediate in composition between pyrophyllite and muscovite, formed at much lower temperatures than muscovite. These relations show that illite is metastable relative to pyrophyllite + muscovite in all of its diagenetic and low-grade metamorphic occurrences. This further implies that illite precursor phases, such as smectite, are also metastable. The prograde reactions involving smectite, illite, and muscovite are therefore inferred to represent Ostwald-step-rule-like advances through a series of metastable phases toward the equilibrium states attained in the greenschist facies. “Illite crystallinity” can therefore be a measure of reaction progress, for which temperature is only one of several determining factors.

Stable, three-dimensionally ordered complexes were formed from synthetically hydrated, highly ordered kaolinite (d(001) = 8.4 Å) and several organic compounds. Removal of the intercalated organic compound by drying or by water washing recovered the 8.4-Å hydrate with its ordered layer stacking essentially unchanged. Some of the complexes were stable for less than a day, whereas others appeared to be stable indefinitely. The compounds that formed ordered complexes were dimethylsulfoxide, formamide, hydrazine-hydrate, 1,1-dimethylhydrazine, ethylene glycol, glycerol, and pyridine. Clay-organic complexes that were prepared from methanol, ethanol, 1- and 2-propanol, acetone, acetic acid, propionic acid, acetaldehyde, N-methylformamide, methylethyl ketone, tetrahydrofuran, and K-acetate were stable only if they were immersed in the intercalating medium and had little or no stacking order.

Many of the organic compounds intercalated by the 8.4-Å hydrate are not known to be intercalated by non-hydrated kaolinite either directly or indirectly. Isolated water molecules appear to be keyed into the ditrigonal holes formed by the basal oxygen of the silicate tetrahedra of the 8.4-Å hydrate. These water molecules, referred to as “hole water,” and fluorine ions that had replaced ~20% of the inner-surface hydroxyls of the 8.4-Å phase sufficiently altered the interlayer bonding to allow an expansion of the inner-layer spaces by a variety of guest molecules. The presence of these guest molecules between the clay layers not only changed the basal spacing and perturbed the infrared (IR) bands arising from the inner-surface hydroxyls, it also shifted the position of the IR band arising from the inner hydroxyl.

As part of the characterization of a Tunisian red soil profile, six samples, taken at different depths, were investigated by Mössbauer spectroscopy at room temperature and at 80 K to obtain information about the various types of Fe oxides present. By considering magnetic hyperfine field distributions, the spectra of goethite and hematite were well resolved. Chemical analyses of the samples revealed a partial substitution of Fe by Al and Mn. The spectral behavior of the goethite was predominantly influenced by crystallinity and amount of Al substitution which resulted in a reduction of the magnetic hyperfine field. The effect of Mn substitution was much more pronounced in the hematite spectrum as a consequence of a stronger suppression of the Morin transition by Mn than by Al.

Zeolites having the structures of phillipsite, merlinoite, and gobbinsite were synthesized from clear solutions at 80°C in the system Na2O-K2O-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O and their morphologies, cell parameters, and compositions determined. At 3.5 M silica concentration, the formation of merlinoite (synthetic zeolite W) is favored over the formation of phillipsite (synthetic zeolite ZK-19) by solution conditions of high pH (> 13.6) and low Na/(Na + K) ratios (<0.5).

Using the information obtained from the synthesis experiments, the presence of merlinoite was predicted in sediments from Searles Lake, a saline, alkaline lake in California with ideal physiochemical conditions for its formation. Merlinoite was subsequently discovered to occur in tuffaceous sediments as part of an authigenic silicate zonation pattern from phillipsite → phillipsite + merlinoite → merlinoite → K-feldspar with increasing depth. Because of the close similarities in the physical properties of phillipsite and merlinoite, merlinoite may be much more common as an authigenic mineral than is currently realized.

Dehydration-induced migration of different exchangeable cations toward the layers of nontronite has been studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy. As interlayer water is removed exchangeable cations migrate toward Fe3+ sites in the tetrahedral sheets of the nontronite (IvFe3+) causing them to distort. The amount of distortion is linearly related to the ionic potential (IP) of the exchangeable cations and is greatest for cations with highest IP. Octahedral Fe3+ sites (VIFe3+) are also affected by migration of cations into the pseudohexagonal cavities. As exchangeable cations move into the pseudohexagonal cavities, interaction with VIFe3+ sites increases. The intensity of the outer VIFe3+ Mössbauer doublet increases with respect to the inner VIFe3+ doublet as the IP of the exchangeable cation increases. It appears that the exchangeable cations play a significant role in determining the thermal stability of nontronite.

The extent of illite/smectite (I/S) reactions is linked with quantitative measurements of shale fabric in a suite of samples from a lower Frio Formation well. Greater illitization of the I/S clays is found in laminated shales that possess a larger pore surface area/pore volume (SA/V) of 3.21 × 106 cm−1 than the adjacent massive shale lithofacies with a SA/V of 1.97 × 106 cm−1. Mean pore diameter in both shale lithologies is 0.0145 micrometers, though in the laminated shale distributions are skewed towards more smaller-sized pores. While no direct permeability measurements were made, estimates of permeability that are based on simple physical models using SA/V suggest that lower permeabilities are associated with laminated shales. The trend of greater illitization at higher SA/V values is contrary to expectations that reaction extent is enhanced by greater permeabilities, such as created by silt laminations in shale. The limitations of estimated permeabilities emphasize that porosimetry measurements of shale fabric are useful for estimating the access of material to all reaction sites, and do not just describe the effect of a few large pores that dominate permeability. Greater reaction extent in the laminated shales is associated with the accessibility of fluids to more pore space than in the massive shales.

In the past few years, anthropological research concerned with the ethnographic aspects of ritual practices has renewed its interest in the meaning of ritual symbolism. This research has been possible because of a methodological inversion, namely, starting with a descriptive study of the rites rather than analyzing religious beliefs, contrarily to what was the moraine frontale of traditional history of religion.

Ferruginous clay partings in limestones of the marine, largely evaporitic, Upper Triassic Mohila Formation (Makhtesh Ramon, Israel) contain hexagonal plates and cube-like bodies up to one millimeter across. Analyses by electron microscopy, infrared and Mössbauer spectroscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction indicate that the matrix contains Fe-rich anhedral kaolinite, up to 100 μm in size; the hexagonal plates are composed of euhedral, Fe-free kaolinite covered with well-developed acicular goethite and platy hematite (0.5 to 2 μm in size), and the cubes consist of fine-grained goethite with minor amounts of kaolinite. The anhedral kaolinite appears to be detrital, the hexagonal plates to be authigenic, and the cubes to be pseudomorphs after pyrite. Oxidation appears to have altered Fe-rich kaolinite and pyrite to Fe-free kaolinite, goethite, and hematite and was accompanied by recrystallization and pseudomorphic replacement. The alteration process was slow and was probably induced by a small increase in pH and in the Al/Fe ratio, resulting from oxidation of reduced components (pyrite, ferrous carbonate, organic matter) in a semiclosed, sediment-mud system. Overlying kaolinitic flint clay deposits may be the final product of a similar process.

Thanks to the particularly penetrating analysis of André Martinet, we now know that the complementary existence of two levels of different articulation is one of the most remarkable specific characteristics of language. To the first level belong all facts concerning significant units, the meaning and inflection of words, syntactic groupings and the composition of a discourse; the second articulation is that of non-significant elements that we call phonemes. In other words, it is at the second level that we pronounce articulate sounds, while to the first we owe the possibility of formulating groups with meaning. The first articulation could be visualized as the molecular and cellular level in which the simplest elements, having a very limited autonomy, are organized according to affinities having the force of law; the second articulation would thus represent the atomic level, that of elementary particles identified by their role in groups.

Near-infrared (NIR) reflectance spectra for mixtures of ordered kaolinite and ordered dickite have been found to simulate the spectral response of disordered kaolinite. The amount of octahedral vacancy disorder in nine disordered kaolinite samples was estimated by comparing the sample spectra to the spectra of reference mixtures. The resulting estimates are consistent with previously published estimates of vacancy disorder for similar kaolin minerals that were modeled from calculated X-ray diffraction patterns. The ordered kaolinite and dickite samples used in the reference mixtures were carefully selected to avoid undesirable particle size effects that could bias the spectral results.

NIR spectra were also recorded for laboratory mixtures of ordered kaolinite and halloysite to assess whether the spectra could be potentially useful for determining mineral proportions in natural physical mixtures of these two clays. Although the kaolinite-halloysite proportions could only be roughly estimated from the mixture spectra, the halloysite component was evident even when halloysite was present in only minor amounts. A similar approach using NIR spectra for laboratory mixtures may have applications in other studies of natural clay mixtures.

Pidgin languages are generally languages which are more or less rudimentary languages developing in situations of contacts between two different cultures, one of them dominant in the contact situation, with the use of such languages restricted to certain limited contacts such as trading, plantation work involving the employment of indigenous labour, master-servant relationships, and similar types of contact situations. Much of the vocabulary of a pidgin language consists of elements of the language of the dominant culture in a more or less distorted, and often semantically changed, form with elements from the language of the non-dominant culture playing a less important part in its vocabulary. Its structural features do not as a rule reflect structural characteristics of the language of the dominant culture, unless the languages of both the dominant and the non-dominant culture are closely related and structurally very similar, though even in such situations quite significant deviations from the structural set-up of the language of the dominant culture can be observed in the pidgin language. Some to many of the structural features of a pidgin language may reflect features of the language of the non-dominant culture but, in pidgin languages, a number of unique structural and grammatical features can be observed which appear to reflect some basic simplifications in language use in contact situations between speakers of different languages. In any event, in the usual type of pidgin language, the overall vocabulary is small and limited in its usefulness to the specific types of contact situations in which the language is used and its grammatical complexity is greatly reduced when compared with both the language of the dominant culture and the nondominant culture. Also, as a rule, the sound system of a pidgin language constitutes a considerable simplification when compared with the sound system of both these languages.

The foundation of methodical development of literary hermeneutics represents an altogether new proposition. There existed for centuries an old tradition of philological hermeneutics. It can glory in its venerable origins: the interpretation of ecclesiastical canonical writing, an art which ever since the period of Humanism has been erecting for itself a proud monument of re-edited and corrected texts and commentaries of ancient authors. It can also show just as impressive a result of historical interpretation of the texts of the world's literary past which had served the ideal of an “objective” and therefore scholarly knowledge. However we know that these achievements were not a monopoly of the traditional philological hermeneutics, but were shared with the theological, juridical, philosophical and distorical hermeneutics: in short, with all branches of study concerned with editing, critical study of sources and historical interpretation of the writings of the past. The merits of the traditional hermeneutics of literary texts are so unexceptional, its history so difficult to distinguish from other regional hermeneutics that the epistemologist can speak of a common philological basis and pose the following fundamental question: where does the independence of literary hermeneutics really begin? How has it operated and how does it operate today in order to render justice to the aesthetic character of its texts?

What we intend to do here is to present the obituary as a simple story in which an individual's life makes sense in terms of cultural assumptions on values, on meaningful relations, and achievements. The brevity of the story we consider is made so by the relative dearth of information which an obituary contains. But, in spite of the scarcity of information, the story still reveals a clear orientation: the obituary has meaning only in the context of socio-economic inequality and the exchange facilitated by that inequality. Our task in this paper is to attempt a description of this orientation to an “outsider”. The emphasis is not so much on the structure of the discourse but the cultural knowledge which guides the discourse.

For some time it has been fashionable in literary circles to reject what is called scornfully the biographical method. It was inevitable. No mode lasts forever. Sooner or later, there is a change. This method was the law for too long. It had no rival. Under its tutelage the motto for teaching literature was “the man, his work”. It was by its authority that students were taught that La Fontaine was in charge of waterways and forests and master of the hunt before writing his Fables, that they had to learn by heart; or that Beaumarchais had been a clockmaker, musician, secret agent and business man before inventing the character of Figaro, proposed for their admiration. There has been a reaction. Our irreverent and contentious age has put an end to that absolute sovereignty. For a good quarter of a century this practice and the assumptions on which it rests has been on trial, in the name of the various and at times even contradictory conceptions and theories about the nature of literature. These have in common, however, the belief in the independence of literature with regard to the human being who was the instrument of its creation, as well as the anathema cast by this fact on what is commonly accepted as “referential illusion”.

According to the Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology the meanings of ‘divine’ are ‘pertaining to God, godlike, soothsayer and seer’ while ‘to divine’ (after the Latin divinare) is to ‘foretell, predict or make out as by supernatural insight’.
