Pectin is composed of a group of complex polysaccharides that are naturally found in various plants and are associated with a range of beneficial health effects. Health outcomes from dietary pectin can vary depending on botanical origin, dietary dose and structure of pectin. The objective of this scoping review is to build a comprehensive overview of the current evidence available on intervention studies conducted in humans and to better understand the possible knowledge gaps in terms of structure–function relationships across the different health-related effects. PubMed and Embase databases were searched using PRISMA-ScR guidelines, yielding 141 references (from the initial 3704), representing 134 intervention studies performed between 1961 and 2022 that met inclusion criteria. Studies were divided into six categories, which included gut health, glycaemic response and appetite, fat metabolism, bioavailability of micronutrients, immune response and other topics. Review of these human intervention studies identified a variety of cohort characteristics and populations (life stage, health status, country), sources/types of pectin (i.e. citrus, sugarbeet, apple, other and non-defined), intervention timeframes (from one single intake to 168 d) and doses (0.1–50 g/d) that were tested for health outcomes in people. Gut health, post-prandial glucose regulation and maintenance of blood cholesterol represented the largest categories of studied outcomes. Further research to strengthen the structure–function relationships for pectin with health properties and associated outcomes is warranted and will benefit from a more precise description of physico-chemical characteristics and molecular compositions, such as degree of esterification, weight, degree of branching, viscosity, gel formation and solubility.

Many improvements have been made to bring infant formula (IF) closer to human milk (HM) regarding its nutritional and biological properties. Nevertheless, the protein components of HM and IF are still different, which may affect their digestibility. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the protein digestibility of HM and IF using the infant INFOGEST digestion method. Pooled HM and a commercial IF were subjected to the infant INFOGEST method, which simulates the physiological digestion conditions of infants, with multiple directions, i.e. the curd state, gel images of SDS-PAGE, molecular weight distribution, free amino acid concentrations and in vitro protein digestion rate. HM underwent proteolysis before digestion and tended to have a higher protein digestion rate with finer curds during gastric digestion, than the IF. However, multifaceted analyses showed that the protein digestibility of HM and IF was not significantly different after gastrointestinal digestion. In conclusion, the infant INFOGEST method showed that the digestibility of HM and IF proteins differed to some extent before digestion and after gastric digestion, but not at the end of gastrointestinal digestion. The findings of this study will contribute to the refinement of IF with better protein digestibility in infant stomach.

β-Glucan has been reported for its health benefits on blood lipids in hypercholesterolaemic individuals for years. However, people have paid little attention to the effects of β-glucan in populations with mild hypercholesterolaemia as well as the various delivering matrices. Our objective was to perform a meta-analysis to analyse the effects of β-glucan with different delivering matrices in mildly hypercholesterolaemic individuals. After conducting a comprehensive search in Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane Library, a total of twenty-one randomised controlled trials involving 1120 participants were identified to measure the pooled effect. The overall results indicated that consuming a dose of ≥3 g/d of β-glucan for at least 3 weeks could significantly reduce total cholesterol (TC) (−0·27 mmol/l, 95 % CI −0·33, −0·21, P < 0·001) and LDL-cholesterol (−0·26 mmol/l, 95% CI −0·32, −0·20, P < 0·001) compared with the control group in mildly hypercholesterolaemic individuals, while no significant difference was observed in TAG (−0·03 mmol/l, 95% CI −0·11, 0·06, P = 0·521) and HDL-cholesterol (0·01 mmol/l, 95% CI −0·03, 0·04, P = 0·777). There was evidence for modest unexplained heterogeneity in the meta-analysis. In conclusion, β-glucan can significantly reduce risk factors like TC and LDL-cholesterol for CVD in mildly hypercholesterolaemic individuals; furthermore, it appears that the effects of food matrices with both ‘solid products’ and ‘liquid products’ where β-glucan was incorporated into were ranked as the best way to exert its beneficial properties, while ‘liquid’ and ‘solid’ products were ranked as the second and third positions, respectively.

We report here the existence of bands of higher molecular weight after western blot analysis in three proteins – Skp1, p27 and IκBα in bovine preimplantation embryos. This finding is specific to preimplantation embryos (from the 2-cell stage to the blastocyst stage) and not differentiated fibroblast cells in which these bands were of expected molecular weight. We suggest that these bands of higher molecular weight represent a complex of proteins that are characteristic of preimplantation embryos.

The effect of polypropylene (PP) molecular weight on the properties of styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer (SBS)/PP blends was studied. All SBS/PP blends (50/50 and 90/10) exhibited a sandwich structure where the co-continuous SBS/PP layer was between the top and bottom PP layers. Solvent extraction tests suggested that the continuous phase structure of PP was independent of the blending ratio and PP molecular weight, while the SBS phase changed from a dispersed phase to a continuous phase as the SBS content increased. The decrease in PP molecular weight decreased the PP layer thickness but increased the phase domain size of SBS in SBS/PP(50/50) blends. As a result, less noticeable “stress-hardening” phenomenon was observed. The mechanism for the structural change was attributed to the different melt viscosities of each component. The crystallinity of the blends did not change with the variable PP molecular weight but decreased with the increasing SBS content.

Poly[(rac-lactide)-co-glycolide] (PLGA) is used in medicine to provide mechanical support for healing tissue or as matrix for controlled drug release. The properties of this copolymer depend on the evolution of the molecular weight of the material during degradation, which is determined by the kinetics of the cleavage of hydrolysable bonds. The generally accepted description of the degradation of PLGA is a random fragmentation that is autocatalyzed by the accumulation of acidic fragments inside the bulk material. Since mechanistic studies with lactide oligomers have concluded a chain-end scission mechanism and monolayer degradation experiments with polylactide found no accelerated degradation at lower pH, we hypothesize that the impact of acidic fragments on the molecular degradation kinetics of PLGA is overestimated. By means of the Langmuir monolayer degradation technique, the molecular degradation kinetics of PLGA at different pH could be determined. Protons did not catalyze the degradation of PLGA. The molecular mechanism at neutral pH and low pH is a combination of random and chainend-cut events, while the degradation under strongly alkaline conditions is determined by rapid chainend cuts. We suggest that the degradation of bulk PLGA is not catalyzed by the acidic degradation products. Instead, increased concentration of small fragments leads to accelerated mass loss via fast chain-end cut events. In the future, we aim to substantiate the proposed molecular degradation mechanism of PLGA with interfacial rheology.

Thermocapillary dewetting of liquids and molten films has recently emerged as a viable alternative to conventional microprocessing methods. As this thermal gradient-induced mechanism is universal, it can be applied to any material. This work explores the sequential dewetting of materials with varying melting points, including polymers and metals, to create aligned morphologies. The variation in melting point allows for the dewetting of single layers at a time or mobility-limited simultaneous dewetting. As a result, a variety of multimaterial structures can be produced with built-in alignment, such as arrays of concentric circles, lines with periodic segmentation, or islands on holes. This approach employs photothermal methods to induce the necessary thermal gradient, manipulating several variables in order to influence the consequent structures. Adjusting laser power and light intensity allows for the control of temperature for selective dewetting of films; altering beam size and exposure time affects the extent of dewetting in terms of diameter size; overlap effects and simultaneous dewetting can result in complex architectures. This controlled writing of patterns also presents a technique to create both masks at low temperatures for conductive multilayers as well as templates for electrospray deposition.

Underlying mechanisms responsible for the cholesterol-lowering effect of β-glucan have been proposed, yet have not been fully demonstrated. The primary aim of this study was to determine whether the consumption of barley β-glucan lowers cholesterol by affecting the cholesterol absorption, cholesterol synthesis or bile acid synthesis. In addition, this study was aimed to assess whether the underlying mechanisms are related to cholesterol 7α hydroxylase (CYP7A1) SNP rs3808607 as proposed by us earlier. In a controlled, randomised, cross-over study, participants with mild hypercholesterolaemia (n 30) were randomly assigned to receive breakfast containing 3 g high-molecular weight (HMW), 5 g low-molecular weight (LMW), 3 g LMW barley β-glucan or a control diet, each for 5 weeks. Cholesterol absorption was determined by assessing the enrichment of circulating 13C-cholesterol over 96 h following oral administration; fractional rate of synthesis for cholesterol was assessed by measuring the incorporation rate of 2H derived from deuterium oxide within the body water pool into the erythrocyte cholesterol pool over 24 h; bile acid synthesis was determined by measuring serum 7α-hydroxy-4-cholesten-3-one concentrations. Consumption of 3 g HMW β-glucan decreased total cholesterol (TC) levels (P=0·029), but did not affect cholesterol absorption (P=0·25) or cholesterol synthesis (P=0·14). Increased bile acid synthesis after consumption of 3 g HMW β-glucan was observed in all participants (P=0·049), and more pronounced in individuals carrying homozygous G of rs3808607 (P=0·033). In addition, a linear relationship between log (viscosity) of β-glucan and serum 7α-HC concentration was observed in homozygous G allele carriers. Results indicate that increased bile acid synthesis rather than inhibition of cholesterol absorption or synthesis may be responsible for the cholesterol-lowering effect of barley β-glucan. The pronounced TC reduction in G allele carriers of rs3808607 observed in the previous study may be due to enhanced bile acid synthesis in response to high-viscosity β-glucan consumption in those individuals.

A nonionic surfactant with the appropriate structure and concentration increased rimsulfuron activity 10-fold. Surfactants sharply increased rimsulfuron activity as concentration increased up to 0.05% (w/w) with slightly more enhancement up to 0.1% (w/w). Surfactants with a wide range of 14 chemical, physical, and surface properties were evaluated on giant foxtail, velvetleaf, and corn. Two properties, HLB (hydrophilic-lipophilic balance) and the physical form of the spray deposit, explained the biological variation. The most active surfactants had an HLB from 12 to 17 and formed a moist gel spray deposit on the leaf on all three species. A separate study with 13 chemically pure linear alcohol ethoxylates supported these conclusions and additionally showed that increasing molecular size increases activity. Because crop injury correlates with weed control, the best surfactant strategy is to maximize weed control at the lowest rimsulfuron rate.

Due to their aqueous environment and biocompatible polymers, aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) provide a mild environment for partition of cells. A comprehensive understanding of cell partition in ATPS will facilitate cell separation and fractionation in ATPS for downstream cell-based analytical applications and various cellular and molecular biology studies. We report the effect of molecular weight of phase polymers on partition of cells between two aqueous phases and their interface. We generate three different ATPS by dissolving polyethylene glycol and dextran of different molecular weights in a standard cell culture medium of fixed composition. After suspending cells in each ATPS, we quantify the number of cells partitioned into each segregated phase and the interface between the two phases. Importantly, we use two-phase solutions of an identical interfacial tension from each ATPS to avoid the effect of interfacial tension on cell partition. Our results indicate that decreasing the molecular weight of one of the phase polymers results in distribution of a greater number of cells toward the phase rich in that polymer. Regardless of molecular weight of polymers used, two-phase solutions made with higher concentrations of polymers cause a significant shift toward cell partition to the interface. This study elucidates the role of polymer molecular weight on cell partition in ATPS and offers formulations for rapid and effective cell partition.

This work shows the development of several models for chain-growth polymerizations that admit the direct calculation of the complete molecular weight distribution of the polymer. The direct and complete calculation implies that no statistical mean values are employed as in the moments method neither numerical approximations like in the minimum-squared based methods. The free radical polymerization of ethylene (LDPE) and the coordination via metallocenes polymerization of ethylene (HDPE) are taken as examples for analysis.

In the free radical polymerization case, the conventional scheme for chain-growth polymerization is adopted, with steps for initiation, propagation, chain transfer to small species and the additional step of chain transfer to dead chains [1]. The kinetic parameter are obtained from the open literature. Two kind of reactors were modelled: batch and continuous stirred tank reactor. For this last case, a simulation strategy was considered in which the run started from an initial known population of dead chains. Results show that typical non-linear polymerization profiles for the molecular weight distribution are obtained. For the coordination polymerization of ethylene via metalocenes, the standard coordination model was employed [2]. A two-site catalyst was considered and kinetic parameters reported in the open literature were used. For this study an experimental program in a lab-scale reactor was undertaken in order to obtain modelling data [3]. Results show that the standard model adequately reproduces the experimental data in the kinetic and molecular attributes of the polymer.

Dihydroxy telechelics are precursors for the synthesis of multiblock copolymers. In order to synthesize high molecular weight polymers with good elastic properties it is necessary to gain detailed knowledge of the reaction behavior of these precursors. Therefore it was explored whether the polyaddition reaction of polyester-diols can be established in a robotic synthesizer platform to facilitate the elucidation of reaction characteristics. A series of 16 reactions was performed using a telechelic polyester and trimethylhexamethylene diisocyanate. The chain extension behavior of the building block was compared with respect to the Carothers equation. It was found, that the chain extension behavior follows the expected trend. The molecular weight of the polymers increased when the optimal ratio of reactive groups was approached.

This work presents results on the prediction of the molecular weight distributions (MWD) of chain growth polymerization using conventional software and hardware tools. The investigation focuses on two kinds of polymerization processes: free radical batch and continuous polymerization processes with application to low density polyethylene synthesis (LDPE); and coordination polymerization via metallocenes with application to high density polyethylene synthesis (HDPE). For both processes, kinetic models, consisting of sets of differential equations describing the dynamic behavior of all the chemical species in the reaction media, are presented. From these sets is possible to obtain the molecular weight distribution of the polymer1,2,4

Strategies for the simulation of the polymerization models were developed and results of these simulations are presented. On the free radical polymerization case, the next results are highlighted: i) It was confirmed that the chain transfer to polymer step produces strong asymmetries on the MWD as well as a high polydispersity index; ii) It’s possible to calculate the MWD in the CSTR process through a simulation strategy that permits the decoupling of the live and dead chains populations. On the metallocene polymerization case, it was demonstrated that the coordination standard model represents well the system experimentally studied and it can be employed to directly calculate the molecular weight distribution.

These results confirm the idea that the complete MWD can be directly calculated with conventional hardware and software tools.

The water-soluble, mixed-linkage β-glucan, a form of soluble dietary fibre, is considered the main biologically active component responsible for the capacity of many oat products to lower postprandial glycaemia and fasting plasma cholesterol in human subjects. The present review discusses the physical and chemical properties of oat β-glucan that are considered important predictors of these beneficial metabolic effects. In vitro modelling and animal and human studies have provided compelling evidence showing that the ability of oat β-glucan to increase the viscosity of digesta in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is a primary determinant of its blood-glucose and cholesterol-lowering properties. Therefore, the chemical structure, molecular weight (MW), the rate and extent of dissolution and solution rheology of oat β-glucan are key factors in determining the physiological function of oat-containing foods. The structure and properties of oat β-glucan vary between species and varieties of oats, and are also affected by the growing and storage conditions and processing of oat grain. In addition, the extraction and analysis methods may also contribute to the variations in the structure, MW, hydration and solution rheology of β-glucan obtained from different laboratories. Recent work has demonstrated that β-glucan solubility in foods depends on the source of the material and processing conditions; solubility may also be subject to changes during food preparation and storage (such as freezing). In conclusion, both the amount and MW of β-glucan that are solubilised in the GIT need to be considered when assessing the blood-glucose and cholesterol-lowering properties of oat-containing foods.

We have reported previously that the urinary excretion of B-group vitamins reflects recent dietary intakes of these vitamins. We also proposed reference values for the urinary levels of B-group vitamins for human subjects, and used these for evaluating human nutritional status. However, the question arises as to whether the urinary excretion of B-group vitamins in animals or human subjects decreases immediately before they become B-group vitamin insufficient or when fed a diet low in vitamins. In the present study, rats were fed a vitamin-free diet for 5 d, and changes in the levels of B-group vitamins in urine and blood were monitored. Urinary excretion of vitamin B1, vitamin B2, 4-pyridoxic acid (a catabolite of vitamin B6), pantothenic acid, folate and biotin steeply decreased, and all of the values reached zero within 1–2 d. With respect to blood, the concentrations of only three of the eight B-group vitamins (vitamin B1, pyridoxal phosphate and biotin) decreased to 15 % (P < 0·0001), 7 % (P < 0·0001) and 2 % (P < 0·0001) on day 5, respectively, compared with the values at the beginning of the experiment. The decrease was more rapid and the changes were greater in the urine samples than in the blood samples. The present data complement our previous proposal that the urinary excretion of B-group vitamins reflects the nutritional status of these vitamins.

An increase in molecular weight of the polymer generally impedes solubility in common solvents and may influence the polymer optoelectronic properties as well. Indeed, higher molecular weights are expected to increase charge carrier mobilities and therefore give rise to better photovoltaic performances of bulk heterojunction solar cells. In this work, we use copolymers based on 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole, thiophene and thieno[3,2-b]thiophene units of various fractions differing in molecular weights almost by a factor of 4 with a fullerene based acceptor material Indene-C60 Bisadduct (IC[60]BA) to elaborate bulk heterojunction solar cells. We investigate the influence of post-deposition annealing temperatures and polymer:fullerene ratios on the final cell performances. We use IC[60]BA as an acceptor to enhance the open circuit voltage due to its high lying LUMO level [1]. Additionally, charge carrier mobilities were probed using bottom contact organic field-effect transistors. As expected, higher molecular weights (as long as homogeneity was maintained) resulted in an increase of the hole field-effect mobility (up to 7x10-3 cm2V-1s-1). Consequently, the power conversion efficiencies of bulk heterojunction solar cells could be improved by increasing the copolymer molecular weight. A power conversion efficiency of 2.4% with an open circuit voltage of 0.82V was reached in a standard device configuration with aluminum as a cathode after post-deposition thermal annealing.

Modeling of free radical polymerizations of the liquid-crystalline monomer 6-[4-(4-heptyloxyphenylazo)phenoxy]hexylacrylate using the PREDICI software package is reported. The model accounts for all elemental reactions that were identified to be important for radical polymerizations of acrylate-type monomers. On the basis of butyl acrylate kinetic data a remarkable agreement between number average molar masses from modelling (Mn,sim) and from experiments (Mn,exp) is observed: Mn,sim = 17800 g·mol−1 and Mn,exp = 17400 g·mol−1. Similarly, dispersity values of 1.8 and 1.6 were determined via modelling and experiments, respectively. It is shown that the assumption of butyl acrylate kinetics provides a reasonable approximation even for acrylate-based monomers having mesogenic substituents.

The order in self-assembled block copolymer films with hexagonal structure is compared using an image analysis method and images taken by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The coordinates of the centres of cylindrical elements in the assembled array are assigned using image analysis software. The method is then used to calculate the amount of elements that symmetrically overlap with another element when mapped through an origin point. Order is compared based on a single numerical value which is dependent on radial distance from the origin and the overlap tolerance value that is assigned. Samples of PS-b-PEO diblock copolymer with a range of molecular weights are compared, and it is found that the degree of ordering achieved is not related to the size of the molecule.

The complementary physical properties of the distinct constituents render polymer-grafted nanocrystals (PGNPs) intriguing materials systems in which property characteristics can be tuned over a wide range from hard particulate to soft polymer-type. Here we demonstrate that dependent on the molecular weight and the graft density of the grafted polymer chains, three characteristic regimes of PGNPs are observed: (1) hard-sphere type colloidal crystalline with the formation of cracks driven by short-range interactions, (2) plastic mesocrystalline with the crazing behaviors by chain entanglement, or (3) disordered structure with soft-polymer type interactions. In addition to controlling the mechanical properties of PGNPs, grafted chains can have a key role in mediating their gradual transformation into more ordered microstructures from nanoparticles with energetically unfavorable property (i.e., activation barrier for crystallization induced by polydisperse nanoparticles [1, 2]).

Electrospinning is a very powerful method to create cellular scaffolds for regenerative medicine – especially for artificial vascular grafts. Commercially available thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers (TPUs), like Pellethane™ are FDA approved and have already shown excellent biomechanical properties as electrospun vascular grafts. In order to induce the growth of a neo artery and hence increase the long-term patency of the graft, the use of biodegradable TPUs is beneficial. Therefore we aim for the development of degradable TPUs. In preliminary studies the mechanical properties of segmented TPUs were examined. The tendencies of the properties of the compression-molded bulk materials were also found for the electrospun materials. It could also be shown that the substitution of the aromatic 4,4′-methylene diphenyl diisocyanate building blocks in Pellethane™ with the aliphatic hexamethylene diisocyanate – to avoid toxic aromatic amines as degradation products - only causes minor loss of strength. To obtain degradable TPUs, our concept is to incorporate cleavable ester bonds into the polymer chain. For this purpose, lactic- and terephthalic ester-based cleavable chain extenders were used. The expected degradation products showed no cytotoxicity in-vitro. Degradation tests of polymer samples in phosphate buffered saline at elevated temperatures confirmed the degradability of the new polymers.
