The Thue–Morse sequence $\{t(n)\}_{n\geqslant 0}$ is the indicator function of the parity of the number of ones in the binary expansion of nonnegative integers n, where $t(n)=1$ (resp. $=0$) if the binary expansion of n has an odd (resp. even) number of ones. In this article, we prove a generalized Rodrigues formula for a wide class of holonomic Laurent series, which yields a new linear independence criterion concerning their values at algebraic points. This generalization yields a new construction of Padé approximations including those for Gauss hypergeometric functions. In particular, we obtain a linear independence criterion over a number field concerning values of Gauss hypergeometric functions, allowing the parameters of Gauss hypergeometric functions to vary.

We show that two distinct singular moduli $j(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}),j(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}^{\prime })$, such that for some positive integers $m$ and $n$ the numbers $1,j(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F})^{m}$ and $j(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}^{\prime })^{n}$ are linearly dependent over $\mathbb{Q}$, generate the same number field of degree at most two. This completes a result of Riffaut [‘Equations with powers of singular moduli’, Int. J. Number Theory, to appear], who proved the above theorem except for two explicit pairs of exceptions consisting of numbers of degree three. The purpose of this article is to treat these two remaining cases.

In this paper, we study transcendence theory for Thakur multizeta values in positive characteristic. We prove an analogue of the strong form of Goncharov’s conjecture. The same result is also established for Carlitz multiple polylogarithms at algebraic points.

The problem of linear independence of the integer translates of μ * B, where μ is a compactly supported distribution and B is an exponential box spline, is considered in this paper. The main result relates the linear independence issue with the distribution of the zeros of the Fourier-Laplace transform, of μ on certain linear manifolds associated with B. The proof of our result makes an essential use of the necessary and sufficient condition derived in [12]. Several applications to specific situations are discussed. Particularly, it is shown that if the support of μ is small enough then linear independence is guaranteed provided that does not vanish at a certain finite set of critical points associated with B. Also, the results here provide a new proof of the linear independence condition for the translates of B itself.

Let F(x, θ) be a family of distribution functions indexed by θ ∈ Ω. If G(θ) is a distribution function on Ω H(x) = ƒohm; F(x, θ) dG(θ) is a mixture with respect to G. If there is a unique G yielding H, the mixtures is said to be identifiable.This paper summarises some known results related to identifiability of special types of mixtures and then discusses the general problem of identifiability in terms of mappings. Some new results follow for mappings with special features.
