Studies have challenged the assumption that different types of word-final s in English are homophonous. On the one hand, affixal (e.g. laps) and non-affixal s (e.g. lapse) differ in their duration; on the other hand, variation exists across several types of affixal s (e.g. between the plural (cars) and genitive plural (cars’)). This line of research was recently expanded in a study in which an interesting side effect appeared: the s was longer if followed by a past tense verb (e.g. The pods/odds eventually dropped), in comparison to a following present tense verb (e.g. The old screens/jeans obviously need replacing.). Put differently, the s became longer in the absence of overt morphosyntactic agreement, where it was mostly the sole plurality marker in the sentence. The objective of the present article is to examine whether this effect can be replicated in a more controlled setting. Having considered a large number of potential confounding variables in a reading experiment, we found an effect in the expected direction, one that is compatible with the literature on the impact that predictability has on duration. We interpret this finding against the background of the role of fine acoustic detail in language.

Glasses were prepared in systems based on two stoichiometric sulfides that were selected from Ga2S3, GeS2, and Sb2S3, with the incorporation of excess sulfur and CsCl. We investigated the fundamental properties, including glass transition, density, and optical absorption, and their variations with the incorporation of excess sulfur and CsCl into the pseudo two-component sulfide glasses. The incorporation of CsCl into the GeS2–Sb2S3 glasses shifted the absorption edge at the short-wavelength side to the long-wavelength direction, particularly for glasses with more amount of GeS2 than SbS3/2. In both cases of CsCl incorporation into the Ga2S3–GeS2 glass and Ga2S3–Sb2S3 glass systems, the absorption edges shifted to the short-wavelength direction regardless of the compositions. Ag photodoping behaviors were investigated for the bulk sulfide glasses with excess sulfur and CsCl. The results are discussed based on the diffusion of silver in the glass network that is modified by the incorporation.

In this study, for the first time, chemically modified carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were used as a conductive additive in the cathode composite for lithium–sulfur batteries. Oxidation of pure CNTs has been carried out using modified Hummers’ method, and to partially remove oxygen groups from the CNT surface and increase their electronic conductivity, oxidized CNTs have been hydrothermally treated. The cathode slurry was mixed in water with a water-soluble LA133 binder. Despite the decrease in electronic conductivity of CNTs after chemical treatment, the presence of structural defects and oxygen groups provides uniform distribution of modified CNTs in the sulfur-based composite, which results in more than twice higher electrode specific capacity compared with the electrodes comprising pure CNTs. Using chemically modified CNTs as a conductive additive is proposed as an effective way for the preparation of nontoxic and cost-effective water-based cathode slurries in lithium–sulfur batteries.

High-energy lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries still suffer from poor rate capability and short cycle life caused by the polysulfides shuttle and insulating nature of S (and the discharge product, Li2S). Selenium disulfide (SeS2), with a theoretical specific capacity of 1342 mAh g−1, is a promising cathode material as it has better conductivity compared to sulfur. The electrochemical reaction kinetics of CNFs-S/SeS2 composites (denoted as CNFs/S1-xSex, where x ≤ 0.1) are expected to be remarkably improved because of the better conductivity of SeS2 compared to sulfur. Here, a high-performance composite cathode material of CNFs/S1-xSex for novel Li-S batteries is reported. The CNFs/S1-xSex composites combine the higher conductivity and higher density of SeS2 with high specific capacity of sulfur. The CNFs/S1-xSex electrode shows good initial discharge capacity of ∼1050 mAh g−1 at 0.05 C rate with high mass loading of materials (∼6-7 mg cm−2 of composites) and > 97% initial coulombic efficiency. The CNFs/S1-xSex electrode shows more than 600 mAh g-1 specific capacity after 50 charge-discharge cycles at 0.5C rate, much higher compared to the CNFs/S cathodes.

The 2D transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) tungsten disulfide (WS2) has attracted great interest due to its unique properties and prospects for future (opto)electronics. However, compared to molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), the development of a reproducible and scalable deposition process for 2D WS2 has not advanced very far yet. Here, we report on the systematic investigation of 2D WS2 growth on hydrogen (H2)-desorbed sapphire (0001) substrates using a hydrogen sulfide (H2S)-free metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) process in a commercial AIXTRON planetary hot-wall reactor in 10 × 2" configuration. Tungsten hexacarbonyl (WCO, 99.9 %) and di-tert-butyl sulfide (DTBS, 99.9999 %) were used as MO sources, nitrogen (N2) was selected as carrier gas for the deposition processes (standard growth time 10 h). In an initial study, the impact of growth temperature on nucleation and growth was investigated and an optimal value of 820 °C was found. The influence of the WCO flow on lateral growth was investigated. The aim was to maximize the edge length of triangular crystals as well as the total surface coverage. Extending gradually the growth time up to 20 h at optimized WCO flow conditions yields fully coalesced WS2 samples without parasitic carbon-related Raman peaks and with only sparse bilayer nucleation. After substrate removal, a fully coalesced WS2 film was implemented into a light-emitting device showing intense red electroluminescence (EL).

The electrochemical discharge mechanism is reported for all-solid lithium sulfur batteries. Upon milling with carbon fibers, the solid electrolyte used within the cathode composite becomes electrochemically active. Analysis with Raman spectroscopy and XPS revealed the importance of bridging S-S bond formation and breaking in lithium polysulfidophosphates during electrochemical lithiation of the active solid electrolyte. Remarkably, when sulfur is introduced as an active material in the cathode composite, lithium polysulfides are formed as an intermediate product before full lithiation into lithium sulfide. The synthesis of materials based on bridging S-S bonds is an important avenue to the design of new cathodes for all-solid batteries.

Transition metal perovskite chalcogenides, a class of materials with rich tunability in functionalities, are gaining increased attention as candidate materials for renewable energy applications. Perovskite oxides are considered excellent n-type thermoelectric materials. Compared to oxide counterparts, we expect the chalcogenides to possess more favorable thermoelectric properties such as lower lattice thermal conductivity and smaller band gap, making them promising material candidates for high temperature thermoelectrics. Thus, it is necessary to study the thermal properties of these materials in detail, especially thermal stability, to evaluate their potential. In this work, we report the synthesis and thermal stability study of five compounds, α-SrZrS3, β-SrZrS3, BaZrS3, Ba2ZrS4, and Ba3Zr2S7. These materials cover several structural types including distorted perovskite, needle-like, and Ruddlesden–Popper phases. Differential scanning calorimeter and thermogravimetric analysis measurements were performed up to 1200 °C in air. Structural and chemical characterizations such as X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and energy dispersive analytical X-ray spectroscopy were performed on all the samples before and after the heat treatment to understand the oxidation process. Our studies show that perovskite chalcogenides possess excellent thermal stability in air at least up to 550 °C.

The use of in situ formed protective layer on conversion cathodes was introduced as a cheap and simple strategy to shield these materials from undesirable interactions with liquid electrolytes.

Conversion-type cathodes have been viewed as promising candidates to replace Ni- and Co-based intercalation-type cathodes for next-generation lithium (Li) and Li-ion batteries with higher specific energy, lower cost, and potentially longer cycle life. Typically, in conversion reactions two or three Li ions may be stored per just one atom of chalcogen (e.g., S or Se) or transition metal (e.g., Fe or Cu used in halides). Unfortunately, in conversion chemistries the active materials or intermediate charge/discharge products suffer from various unfavorable interactions and dissolution in organic electrolytes. In this mini-review article, we discuss the current interfacial challenges and focus on the protective layers in situ formed on the cathode surface to effectively shield conversion materials from undesirable interactions with liquid electrolytes. We further explore the mechanisms and current progress of forming such protective layers by using various salts, solvents, and additives together with the insight from molecular modeling. Finally, we discuss future opportunities and perspectives of in situ surface protection.

To promote the energy density of lithium-ion battery, the sulfur-based cathode has attracted extensive attention because of its high specific capacity of 1672 mAh g-1 and its high abundance. However, the sulfur shuttling effects and the loss of active material during lithiation hinder its commercial application. To tackle these issues, we synthesized a stable copolymer-sulfur composite by chemically binding sulfur. The composite with 86% sulfur content was prepared using 1,3-diethynylbenzen and sulfur particles via scalable invers vulcanization. The sulfur content in copolymer sulfur was achieved as high as 86%. Our copolymer-sulfur composite cathode showed excellent cycling performance with a specific capacity of 454 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C after 300 cycles. We demonstrate that the organosulfur-DEB units in the copolymer-sulfur composite serve as the ‘plasticizer’ to effectively prevent the polysulfide shuttling.

To reduce the amount of chalcogen needed in the post-annealing process, we demonstrate significantly increased sulfur incorporation into pure sulfide CZTS films achieved by increasing the thiourea content of DMSO-based precursor solution. The increase of sulfur content was confirmed by thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). To understand how the elemental distribution across the CZTS layer is affected by extra thiourea, a systematic compositional study was carried out using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). XPS depth profiling reveals increased sulfur incorporation in the final CZTS films when more thiourea is added to the solution. The grain size was reduced slightly with increased sulfur content and the surface morphology was changed significantly. The effect on the surface of the CZTS film has been investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and XPS. External-quantum-efficiency (EQE) measurements with an electrolyte contact were used to investigate the optoelectronic properties of the deposited CZTS films.

Graphene is not the only prominent example of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Due to their interesting combination of high mechanical strength and optical transparency, direct bandgap and atomic scale thickness transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are an example of other materials that are now vying for the attention of the materials research community. In this article, the current state of quantum-theoretical calculations of the electronic and mechanical properties of semiconducting TMDC materials are presented. In particular, the intriguing interplay between external parameters (electric field, strain) and band structure, as well as the basic properties of heterostructures formed by vertical stacking of different 2D TMDCs are reviewed. Electrical measurements of MoS2, WS2, and WSe2 and their heterostructures, starting from simple field-effect transistors to more demanding logic circuits, high-frequency transistors, and memory devices, are also presented.

Li/S batteries have received too much attention due to their considerable theoretical energy density suitable for high energy applications. Here, we study the consequences of the SEI layer on internal resistance of the single battery cell due to polysulfide (PS) shuttling. The growth in resistance is related to the capacity fading of the cell. Using a model of series resistors, the total internal ionic resistance over cycling performance is expressed and compared for various nanostructured cathodes at different rates. It has been shown that SEI layer is the most significant factor in increasing of ionic resistance at the beginning of the battery aging, while electrode degradation and other phenomena are dominating resistance rise over higher cycles. We also demonstrate that cathodes with smaller equivalent porosity represent an excellent performance in preventing internal resistance enhancement.

A longitudinal study of nasal colonization and hand contamination of food handlers with Staphylococcus aureus commenced in 2002 prior to the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome. In the follow-up in 2003 when hygiene measures were strictly implemented, significant reductions in carriage were observed. To investigate if this change was sustained, nasal and hand carriage rates were compared between the earlier studies and a further sampling in 2011. The initial nasal carriage rate was 35% and hand contamination 41·2%, decreasing to 23·5% and 11·6%, respectively in 2003 (P < 0·001). In 2011, nasal carriage was similar to 2003 (22·9%), while hand contamination dropped further to 3·7% (P < 0·001). Spa-typing revealed 39 types in 2002 and 42 in 2011. This study reveals that the marked reduction in colonization had been sustained. This may be attributed to reduced opportunities for spread due to enhanced hygiene and reinforces its importance for control of disease.

Markets for energy storage that go beyond portable electronics have emerged rapidly this decade, including powering electric vehicles and “leveling the grid” fed by renewable sources such as solar energy, which are intermittent in supply. These new demands require a significant step-up in energy density that will probably not be met by Li-ion batteries; estimates suggest they are starting to approach their theoretical limits. But in the world of “beyond Li-ion,” the options are limited. One of the most hopeful is the Li-S battery, for which greater energy storage can potentially be realized through phase-transformation chemistry using elemental sulfur as a positive electrode material, which converts to lithium sulfide. These future generation systems offer up to a five-fold increased specific energy and greatly reduced cost factors, but commercialization has been hindered owing to key challenges. Efforts over the last two years to better manipulate the cell chemistry and overcome these challenges are presented.

This issue contains assessments of battery performance involving complex, interrelated physical and chemical processes between electrode materials and electrolytes. Transformational changes in battery technologies are critically needed to enable the effective use of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind to allow for the expansion of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) to plug-in HEVs and pure-electric vehicles. For these applications, batteries must store more energy per unit volume and weight, and they must be capable of undergoing many thousands of charge-discharge cycles. The articles in this theme issue present details of several growing interest areas, including high-energy cathode and anode materials for rechargeable Li-ion batteries and challenges of Li metal as an anode material for Li batteries. They also address the recent progress in systems beyond Li ion, including Li-S and Li-air batteries, which represent possible next-generation batteries for electrical vehicles. One article reviews the recent understanding and new strategies and materials for rechargeable Mg batteries. The knowledge presented in these articles is anticipated to catalyze the design of new multifunctional materials that can be tailored to provide the optimal performance required for future electrical energy storage applications.

As a promising transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC), molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has recently attracted a lot of attention due to its graphene-liked two dimensional layer structure, which leads to potential applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, the fabrication of mono- or few-layer MoS2 is limited to ether liquid exfoliation or CVD, and the chemical solution deposition is limited to ammonium thiomolybdate-based precursor. In this paper, hydrazine-based dimensional reduction technique is applied in the chemical solution deposition of MoS2 thin-film, and a larger area uniform thin-film is obtained from bulk powder MoS2. This solution-based process could be applied with a variety coating techniques and lead to wafer level MoS2 thin film production.

Many industries have developed new materials as substitutes for lead in solid lubricants. For example, lead bronze, a Cu-Pb alloy that has been used for slide bearings, has been replaced by a Cu alloy containing sulfide. The development of Pb-free Cu alloys has received considerable attention recently. Pb and sulfide are types of solid lubricants; in particular, MoS2 (molybdenum disulfide) is a popular sulfide lubricant. This study focuses on a material that contains Cu2S. The properties of Cu2S as a solid lubricant are unknown. First principles (FP) and molecular dynamics (MD) are used to clarify the lubrication mechanism of Cu2S. The atomiclevel stable structure of Cu2S is evaluated by FP under specific sliding conditions. The Cu2S lubrication mechanism is clarified by MD using the FP results for the interatomic potential functions. It is clarified that there is a specific slip system and the Cu-S bonds that exists above and below the layers of the slip system are very strong.

Sulfate attack on concrete has been studied worldwide for more than 60 years. However, the mechanisms of attack are still not entirely understood, and deterioration of concrete from sulfates still occurs. The source of the sulfates may be either external or internal. External sources are the naturally occurring sulfates in the environment or those sulfates that are the product of industrial processes or various human activities (e.g. fertilizers often release sulfates into the soil and groundwater). Internal sources of sulfates may include the sulfates introduced in the cements from which concrete is made. The purpose of this study is to find out the amount of sulfates that concrete can withstand in the water. Standards tests have been developed to evaluate the resistance of concretes to sulfate attack. Some, but not all of these tests, take into account the mechanisms of sulfate attack so far discovered in research work. The tests range from those that monitor changes in the strength of concrete specimens after set periods of immersion in known compositions sulfate solutions, to those that use x- ray diffraction to examine concrete specimens for expansive products (e.g. ettringite and thaumasite) that have resulted from sulfate attack.

In this work, NiSx was deposited on FTO by chemical bath and worked as the inner layer in order to enhance the photocurrent of CdS film. It is found the unannealed CdS/NiSx had a higher photocurrent than unannealed CdS, but after annealing, the photocurrent of CdS/NiSx showed dramatical decrease. The mechanism was discussed in detail by UPS and current-potential curves.

Emission properties of Er3+ in Ga2S3–GeS2–Sb2S3 glasses at the mid-infrared region were investigated from the viewpoint of their dependence on the concentration of the active ion and the glass composition. In the Judd–Ofelt analysis, no variation in omega parameters were observed when GeS2 was replaced by Ga2S3, while Ω2 increased as Sb2S3 was replaced by Ga2S3. This is due to the structural similarity and difference between the glass network units, GaS4 and GeS4 tetrahedra, and SbS3 pyramid. Clear mid-infrared emissions were observed at 2750 and 4300 nm assigned to the 4I11/2 → 4I13/2 and 4I9/2 → 4I11/2 transitions, respectively. The lifetime of the initial level of the 4.3 μm emission, 4I9/2, rapidly decreased with the Er3+ concentration because of the cross relaxation of this level, which can take place even at considerably low Er3+ concentration. The cross-relaxation processes were suppressed by the increase in the content of Ga2S3 because the solubility of Er3+ ions in the glasses increases with the Ga2S3 content.
