Late-emerging summer annual weeds are difficult to control in dry bean production fields. Dry bean is a poor competitor with weeds, due to its slow rate of growth and delayed canopy formation. Palmer amaranth is particularly difficult to control due to season-long emergence and resistance to acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides. Dry bean growers rely on PPI and preemergence residual herbicides for the foundation of their weed control programs; however, postemergence herbicides are often needed for season-long weed control. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate effect of planting date and herbicide program on late-season weed control in dry bean in western Nebraska. Field experiments were conducted in 2017 and 2018 near Scottsbluff, NE. The experiment was arranged in a split-plot design, with planting date and herbicide program as main-plot and subplot factors, respectively. Delayed planting was represented by a delay of 15 d after standard planting time. The treatments EPTC + ethalfluralin, EPTC + ethalfluralin followed by (fb) imazamox + bentazon, and pendimethalin + dimethenamid-P fb imazamox + bentazon, resulted in the lowest Palmer amaranth density at 3 wk after treatment and the highest dry bean yield. The imazamox + bentazon treatment provided poor Palmer amaranth control and did not consistently result in Palmer amaranth density and biomass reduction compared with the nontreated control. In 2018, the delayed planting treatment had reduced Palmer amaranth biomass with the pendimethalin + dimethenamid-P treatment, as compared with standard planting. Delaying planting did not reduce dry bean yield and had limited benefit in improving weed control in dry bean.

Field experiments were conducted in 2016 and 2017 to evaluate the effects of seeding rate and herbicide programs on weed control and pinto bean yield under irrigation. The experiments comprised a 5 × 5 factorial randomized complete block design with five replications. The weed control treatments comprised a nontreated control, hand-weeded control, EPTC + ethalfluralin PRE, EPTC + ethalfluralin PRE followed by (fb) dimethenamid-P POST at V1, and EPTC + ethalfluralin PRE fb bentazon/imazamox POST. There were five seeding rates ranging from 247,000 to 494,000 seeds ha–1 planted in 19-cm rows. Weed biomass was reduced by 6 kg ha–1 with every additional 1,000 seeds ha–1. EPTC plus ethalfluralin fb either dimethenamid-P or bentazon plus imazamox reduced weed biomass by at least 29% compared to the nontreated control. There was a significant effect of weed control treatment on pinto bean yield (P = 0.0004). However, there was no significant seeding rate (P = 0.42) or seeding rate–by–weed control interaction effect on pinto bean yield (P = 0.38). Pinto bean yield ranged from 3,080 kg ha–1 in the nontreated control to 4,740 kg ha–1 hand-weeded treatment. Increased seeding rate in narrow rows is a cultural practice that can improve weed control in pinto bean but may not necessarily increase yield.

Field studies were conducted from 2009 through 2011 at the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension Center near Lingle, Wyoming, to evaluate great northern bean response to PRE flumioxazin mixed with either trifluralin, pendimethalin, or ethalfluralin. Seven treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block with three or four replicates y−1. The soil texture of the study site was loam in 2009 and 2011, and sandy loam in 2010. Soil organic matter ranged from 1.4% to 1.8%. Treatments included flumioxazin plus trifluralin, flumioxazin plus pendimethalin, flumioxazin plus ethalfluralin, ethalfluralin plus EPTC, imazamox plus bentazon (POST), hand-weeded control, and nontreated control. Dry bean density 4 wk after planting differed among herbicide treatments (P < 0.001). Treatments that included flumioxazin reduced dry bean density 54% compared with treatments without flumioxazin. Dry bean yield was influenced by dry bean density; on average, yield in flumioxazin-containing herbicide treatments was 30% less than treatments not containing flumioxazin, even though weed control was generally greater in flumioxazin treatments.

Broadleaves, grasses, and nutsedge species are persistent problems with limited management options for strawberry growers in Florida. Field experiments were conducted in 2015-2016 (year 1) and 2016-2017 (year 2) at the Gulf Coast Research and Education Center in Balm, FL, to evaluate weed control and strawberry tolerance to herbicides applied through the drip irrigation. 2940 g ai ha-1 EPTC, 105 g ai ha-1 flumioxazin, 570 g ai ha-1 fomesafen, 52 g ai ha-1 halosulfuron, 3585 g ai ha-1 napropamide, oxyfluorfen 560 g ai ha-1, and 1070 g ai ha-1S-metolachlor were applied through a single drip tape at 7 or 14 d prior to transplanting. Halosulfuron was the most injurious herbicide, causing 18 and 46% injury at 35 d after transplanting (DATP) in year 1 when the herbicide was applied 7 and 14 d prior to transplanting, respectively. However, strawberry plants recovered from the initial injury and there was no reduction in total berry yield. None of the other herbicides evaluated elicited significant crop injury nor reduced berry yield. Averaged over application timings, EPTC, fomesafen, and napropamide suppressed yellow nutsedge emergence to 49, 64, and 41% of the nontreated control, respectively. Flumioxazin, fomesafen, and halosulfuron suppressed black medic emergence to 55, 52, and 55% of the nontreated control, respectively. None of the herbicides evaluated adequately suppressed Carolina geranium. Overall, results suggest that the evaluated herbicides with the exception of halosulfuron are safe for use on strawberry and would give growers an alternative management option. Drip-applied herbicides permit application closer to the transplant date and would be helpful as part of a weed control program for weed suppression.

Field and laboratory studies were conducted to examine effects of prior butylate use on biodegradation of subsequent applications of butylate and four other carbamothioate herbicides. Bioassays were used to demonstrate reductions of butylate and EPTC activity in four soils preconditioned by annual butylate applications. Combining these herbicides with dietholate, an enzyme inhibitor, prolonged persistence and restored normal herbicidal activity. Expected herbicidal efficacy occurred in adjacent plots with no history of carbamothioate use. Prior applications of butylate resulted in cross-adapted degradation of EPTC but not vernolate, pebulate, or cycloate. When samples of Cecil soil were treated in the laboratory with 14C-butylate, evolution of 14CO2 was significantly higher from soils that had received repeated field applications of butylate. The use of 14C-herbkides could be used to predict problem soils and potential herbicide failure.

Broomrape is a severe problem in the continuous cropping of bidi tobacco in India. Fifteen herbicides were evaluated for postemergence control, at different dates and rates, in field experiments in Nipani, Karnataka State. The effects of the herbicides on Orobanche control and growth and yield of tobacco were compared to the effects of handweeding and an untreated check. Following this screening experiment, four herbicides were selected for further testing. Glyphosate at 500 g ai/ha applied at 60 days after transplanting (DAT) and imazaquin at 10 g ai/ha applied at 30 DAT reduced the number of aboveground broomrape spikes by 75 to 80% and increased the tobacco yields by 80 to > 100% compared to the untreated plots. Imazethapyr and EPTC were found to be less effective for broomrape control, but they still led to substantially higher tobacco yield. None of the herbicide treatments resulted in yields higher than those in the hand-weeded plots. These plots probably did not yet reflect the potential yield of tobacco under broomrape-free conditions, due to nonemerged spikes. Toxicity to tobacco of all herbicides was higher for the higher rates tested. It was lowest with imazaquin.

The degradation of 14C-labeled metolachlor, acetochlor, and pretilachlor in control and soils with 10-yr metolachlor- history or 3-yr butylate history was studied by monitoring the evolution of 14CO2 in soil biometer flasks. The degradation rate of 14C-phenyl-labeled metolachlor was similar in soils with 0- and 10-yr metolachlor history over 52 d. 14C was released from carbonyl-labeled metolachlor about 40% faster than from phenyl-labeled metolachlor in both soils. Soil sterilization by autoclaving reduced significantly the metolachlor degradation rate in both soils. Degradation of 14C-labeled EPTC in soils with 3-yr butylate history was much faster than in soils with no history. Soil sterilization reduced the EPTC degradation rate, confirming microbial degradation. The degradation rates of acetochlor, metolachlor, and pretilachlor were similar in soils with and without butylate history. Most of the 14C that remained in history and nonhistory soils was extractable with ethyl acetate or sodium hydroxide. Three major metabolites of metolachlor and EPTC were detected by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) of extracts from both soils. In contrast to the situation with carbamothioate herbicides, soils exposed repeatedly to metolachlor or other acetanilides are not prone to become adapted to these herbicides. Soils with carbamothioate history did not exhibit any apparent cross-adaptation toward acetanilide herbicides.

Tridiphane [2-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-2-(2,2,2-trichloroethyl)oxirane] is a potent synergist of atrazine for postemergence control of weeds such as giant foxtail (Setaria faberi Herrm. ♯ SETFA) and large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop. ♯ DIGSA]. We determined whether: a) tridiphane could syngergize the activity of other herbicides known to be detoxified via enzymatic conjugation to glutathione, and b) differential toxicities of the synergized herbicides could provide control of proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L. ♯ PANMI) in corn (Zea mays L. “PAG SXIII”). Four herbicides were used in this study: EPTC (S-ethyl dipropylthiocarbamate), atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine], CDAA (N-N-diallyl-2-chloroacetamide), and alachlor [2-chloro-2’,6’-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl) acetanilide]. Herbicides and herbicide-synergist combinations were applied postemergence. In corn, tridiphane synergized the activity of EPTC at 2 and 4 kg ai/ha, causing 22 to 25% growth reduction. Atrazine was ineffective and CDAA only slightly effective in combination with tridiphane in causing growth reduction. However, alachlor was markedly synergized by tridiphane at both 2 and 4 kg ai/ha, resulting in 36 to 54% growth reduction compared with plants treated with herbicides alone. Proso millet followed a similar trend to corn: EPTC and alachlor were effectively synergized by tridiphane, while atrazine and CDAA were ineffective. Importantly, however, the rates of herbicide used for proso millet control were much lower than those used for corn. Our data suggest that tridiphane used in combination with EPTC or alachlor could provide improved control of proso millet in corn.

Experiments were conducted in 1982, 1983, and 1984 to determine whether herbicides can effectively control weeds in annual statice (Limonium sinuatum Mill.) without reducing the marketability of the crop. A greenhouse evaluation of chlorpropham (1-methylethyl 3-chlorophenylcarbamate), napropamide [N,N-diethyl-2-(1-naphthalenyloxy)propanamide], EPTC (S-ethyl dipropyl carbamothioate), oxadiazon {3-[2,4-dichloro-5-(1-methylethoxy)phenyl]-5-(1,1-dimethylethyi)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-(3H)-one}, and trifluralin [2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzenamine] indicated that preemergence applications of the latter three herbicides resulted in the most effective weed control and least statice injury. Oxadiazon was the most effective for broadleaf and grass ed control in field-grown statice. Yield and quality were greatest in oxadiazon-treated plots and exceeded those of the handweeded controls. Annual statice was most sensitive to trifluralin.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate butylate and EPTC degradation in two butylate-history soils collected in 1983, 1984, and 1985, and stored at 4 C. No significant differences in biodegradation of butylate and EPTC were found due to length of cold storage of Varina or Wagram soils. Enhanced biodegradation of butylate and cross-adaptation for EPTC were not affected. Storage of soils up to 2 yr should not adversely affect results.

Greenhouse and field experiments were conducted to investigate degradation rates and efficacy of EPTC (S-ethyl dipropyl carbamothioate), butylate [S-ethyl bis(2-methylpropyl)carbamothioate], vernolate (S-propyl dipropylcarbamothioate), and cycloate (S-ethyl cyclohexylethylcarbamothioate) in soils with and without prior history of thiocarbamate use. Herbicide persistence was measured by an oat (Avena sativa L.) bioassay, and giant foxtail (Setaria faberi Herrm. # SETFA) control was visually estimated in field studies. Both greenhouse and field studies indicated that enhanced thiocarbamate degradation occurred when the same herbicide (EPTC, butylate, or vernolate) was applied over successive years. Addition of dietholate (O,O-diethyl O-phenyl phosphorothioate) or fonofos (O-ethyl-S-phenylethylphosphonodithioate) increased thiocarbamate persistence and giant foxtail control in soils with prior thiocarbamate exposure. Use of dietholate or fonofos two or three consecutive years with EPTC or butylate again resulted in enhanced degradation. EPTC persistence and giant foxtail control were not affected by prior treatments or tank mixes with carbofuran (2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-benzofuranyl methylcarbamate). Rotation away from successive applications of the same thiocarbamate herbicide (EPTC, butylate, or vernolate) improved herbicide efficacy.

The effects of weed density on the phytotoxicity of atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine] to white mustard (Brassica hirta Moench) and alachlor [2-chloro-2′,6′-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)acetanilide] to foxtail millet [Setaria italica (L.) Beauv.] were determined in the greenhouse. The fresh weight of both plants was reduced by the herbicide treatments, but as the weed density (plants per pot) increased, the herbicide rate required to cause equivalent fresh weight reductions per pot also increased. White mustard and foxtail millet grown in pots absorbed less 14C-atrazine or 14C-alachlor per plant from the soil at high weed density than low, regardless of herbicide rate. Foxtail millet seedlings grown in petri dishes absorbed less 14C-alachlor per plant from aqueous solution as the number of seedlings per petri dish increased. Data from field experiments in 1977 and 1979 indicated that more alachlor or metolachlor [2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl) acetamide] was required for equal control of a high than low density of forage sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench ‘Rox Orange’] interseeded in maize (Zea mays L.). Rox Orange sorghum was used to simulate shattercane [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], a problem weed in Nebraska. At the higher Rox Orange sorghum seeding rate used, both alachlor and metolachlor treatments decreased Rox Orange sorghum plant populations but not yield.

A seedling bioassay was used to determine the response of triallate-resistant (R) and -susceptible (S) wild oat populations to difenzoquat and EPTC. The bioassay, based on seedling shoot length at 10 d after treatment, provided a reliable and rapid means of determining if wild oat populations were resistant to difenzoquat. Using a bioassay concentration of 15 ppm difenzoquat, it was possible to identify populations that were resistant to the recommended foliar-applied rate (0.85 kg ai/ha). Expected herbicide dosages that reduced shoot length by 50% (ED50) derived from nonlinear regression analysis indicated three and two levels of response to difenzoquat among eight S and seven R populations, respectively, indicating within population variability in their response to difenzoquat. Of the populations tested, none was resistant to EPTC. On the contrary, some R populations had lower ED50 values than did S populations, suggesting an increased sensitivity to EPTC.

Scanning electron micrographs that depict the surface and internal structure of several starch-encapsulated granular formulations of EPTC (S-ethyl dipropylthiocarbamate) and butylate (S-ethyl diisobutylthiocarbamate) relate well with herbicidal release rates previously reported. Fast-release formulations appear to have a porous surface with little distinctive internal structure. Diffusion would be expected to be more rapid as fewer diffusion barriers are present. Slow-release formulations have a smooth, hard surface with irregular surface pores and a honeycombed internal structure. The slower release characteristics are associated with stronger oxidants used for crosslinking xanthate in the entrapment of herbicides. The scanning electron microscope would be an excellent quality control technique in the preparation of starch-encapsulated herbicides.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the biodegradation of 14C-labeled butylate, cycloate, EPTC, pebulate, and vernolate in three butylate-history soils that had received three to eight applications of butylate under field conditions. After 20 days, biodegradation of butylate and EPTC was accelerated and had no lag phase in all three butylate-history soils. Butylate-adapted microorganisms were cross-adapted for EPTC and degraded EPTC as readily as butylate. Biodegradation of butylate and EPTC in Dothan soil without a butylate history exhibited a lag phase of 6 days after which 14CO2 was evolved at an exponential rate. This indicated that enhanced biodegradation was induced after one application of butylate or EPTC. Butylate-adapted microorganisms were cross-adapted for vernolate and pebulate in Dothan and pebulate in Wagram soils with a butylate history. Biodegradation of vernolate and pebulate was not enhanced in Varina butylate-history soil. After 20 days, there was no cross-adaptation for cycloate in any soil. These findings indicated that biodegradation of carbamothioates was influenced by soil type and previous carbamothioate use and that caution should be exercised in use of EPTC on fields of previous butylate use.

The influence of previous herbicide applications on the degradation rate of butylate [S-ethyl bis (2-methylpropyl)carbamothioate], EPTC (S-ethyl dipropyl carbamothioate), alachlor [2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethyl-phenyl)-N-(methoxymethyl)acetamide], and metolachlor [2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl)acetamide] was measured. Degradation studies were conducted on soils with zero to eight previous applications of butylate, zero and six consecutive annual applications of alachlor, and zero to seven previous applications of metolachlor. Previous applications of alachlor or of metolachlor did not affect the rate of degradation when the same herbicide was reapplied. Soils with previous butylate-use history had more rapid degradation of butylate or EPTC than soils with no previous butylate applications. Because soil sterilization reduced 14CO2 evolution to a low level, soil microorganisms could be the primary mechanism of butylate degradation. There was no difference between butylate or EPTC degradation rate in soils treated previously with butylate. Butylate could not be detected 28 days after treatment in soils previously treated with butylate, whereas soils not previously treated with butylate still contained biologically active butylate. Dietholate (O,O-diethyl O-phenyl phosphorothioate) added to butylate generally reduced the rate of butylate degradation in soils previously treated with butylate, but the butylate concentration always was lower in soils treated previously with butylate than in soils without previous butylate applications. Weed control in the field showed rapid loss of butylate and EPTC in soils with previous butylate treatment and that dietholate reduced the rate of butylate and EPTC degradation.

Four cropping systems were evaluated from 1975 to 1977 for the control of yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.). Crops grown in 1975 and 1976 included alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. ‘Elcamino WL-600′), barley (Hordeum vulgare L. ‘CM-67′), corn (Zea mays L. ‘Dekalb T214′), and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. ‘Acala SJ-2′). Herbicides used included butylate (S-ethyl diisobutylthiocarbamate) in corn, EPTC (S-ethyl dipropylthiocarbamate) in alfalfa, glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] in fallow plots, and MSMA (monosodium methanearsonate) in cotton. Cotton, which was grown continuously as one of the four cropping systems, was the only crop grown in 1977. Based on weed counts, crop yields, and the consistent decline in the number of tubers, all cropping systems provided substantial control of yellow nutsedge each year. Two years of either alfalfa treated with EPTC or double cropping barley with corn treated with butylate preceeding cotton reduced the number of viable yellow nutsedge tubers by 96%. Two years of chemically fallowing plots with glyphosate following barley and preceeding cotton was 98% effective in reducing viable tubers. Treating continuous cotton with MSMA, although somewhat inferior to the above systems, reduced the number of viable nutsedge tubers by 91% in 3 yr.

The antidote R-25788 (N,N-diallyl-2,2-dichloroacetamide) protected corn (Zea mays L. ‘DeKalb 315A’) seedlings from injury caused by the acetanilide herbicides, alachlor [2-chloro-2′,6′-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)acetanilide], metolachlor [2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl)acetamide], H-22234 [N-chloroacetyl-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)glycine ethyl ester], and H-26910 [N-chloroacetyl-N-(2-methyl-6-ethylphenyl)glycine isopropyl ester] in a greenhouse study. R-25788, however, did not protect four weed species tested. R-25788 only partially protected corn from injury caused by acetochlor [2-chloro-N-(ethoxymethyl)-6′-ethyl-o-acetotoluidide]. R-25788 was an effective antidote whether applied preemergence, preplant-incorporated, or as a tank mix. Injury symptoms caused by EPTC (S-ethyl dipropylthiocarbamate) and the acetanilide herbicides were similar; both caused leaf twisting and rolling, and at high rates leaves failed to emerge through the coleoptile.

Field experiments were conducted at Lincoln, NE, in 1983 and 1984 to determine the effectiveness of subsurface jet injection of herbicides on a simulated shattercane [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench # SORVU] infestation in corn (Zea mays L.). Alachlor [2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)-N-(methoxymethyl)acetamide] and EPTC (S-ethyl dipropyl carbamothioate) plus dichlormid (2,2-dichloro-N,N-di-2-propenylacetamide), incorporated with a disc or applied from the subsurface and surface with a jet injector attached to a sweep plow, generally produced higher corn yields and shattercane control than herbicides applied with the sweep to the subsurface only. EPTC plus dichlormid controlled shattercane better than alachlor. Cultivation improved shattercane control by at least 10% in conjunction with most jet injection and disc-incorporated alachlor treatments. Cultivation increased corn yields by about 10 to 20% when averaged over all herbicides and application patterns. A subsurface plus surface herbicide injection system supplemented with cultivation would be a possible method of incorporating herbicides in reduced tillage to selectively control shattercane in corn.

Use of R-25788 (N,N-diallyl-2,2-dichloroacetamide) eliminated early-season corn (Zea mays L. '501D′) injury, stand loss, and yield reduction caused by EPTC (S-ethyl dipropylthiocarbamate) at 3.4, 6.7, and 13.4 kg/ha. R-25788 also eliminated early-season corn injury from butylate (S-ethyl diisobutylthiocarbamate) at 9.0 kg/ha. R-25788 did not consistently prevent corn yield reduction from 2,4-D [(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid] or EPTC + 2,4-D. R-25788 had no effect on weed control from any of the herbicides evaluated nor any effect by itself on corn injury or corn yield. No corn injury or yield reductions occurred from vernolate (S-propyl dipropylthiocarbamate) at rates up to 6.7 kg/ha or alachlor [2-chloro-2′, 6′-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)acetanilide] at rates up to 13.4 kg/ha. Early-season corn injury frequently did not result in reduced corn yield.
