Development of robust concrete mixes with a lower environmental impact is challenging due to natural variability in constituent materials and a multitude of possible combinations of mix proportions. Making reliable property predictions with machine learning can facilitate performance-based specification of concrete, reducing material inefficiencies and improving the sustainability of concrete construction. In this work, we develop a machine learning algorithm that can utilize intermediate target variables and their associated noise to predict the final target variable. We apply the methodology to specify a concrete mix that has high resistance to carbonation, and another concrete mix that has low environmental impact. Both mixes also fulfill targets on the strength, density, and cost. The specified mixes are experimentally validated against their predictions. Our generic methodology enables the exploitation of noise in machine learning, which has a broad range of applications in structural engineering and beyond.

In this study, a dipole antenna is designed for real-time damage assessment, humidity, and temperature monitoring in reinforced and non-reinforced concrete structures. The antenna-based sensor is embedded into reinforced and non-reinforced concrete beams to assess electromagnetic measurements. Reflection parameter S11 in dB values and resonant frequencies of the embedded antenna are evaluated to detect damage, humidity, and temperature changes. The exploratory results show that as deformation increases in reinforced concrete, resonance frequency values decrease and S11 values increase. The load and resonance frequency values showed very close trends as deformation increases in the beam. In water content sensing experiments, the S11 in dB values of the antenna decrease as the humidity increases for concrete specimens while the resonance frequency values increase as the humidity increases for the reinforced concrete specimen. Elevated temperature sensing experimental results show that the resonance frequency values of the antenna decrease as the temperature of the specimen increases for concrete specimens while the S11 in dB values increase as the temperature of the specimen increases for reinforced concrete specimen.

In this paper, we present a linear to circular polarization converter integrated in a concrete structure to eliminate signal transmission problem originated from the concrete buildings in microwave regime. Two polarization converter samples and a control specimen made by traditional concrete are designed and their signal transmission responses are compared experimentally. Axial ratio values which can be calculated by the ratio between the co-polar transmission and cross-polar transmission results of the proposed samples are below 3 dB and highly sufficient for linear to circular polarization conversion activity. The operating frequency for the proposed sample 1 is between 6 and 6.5 GHz with 500 MHz of bandwidth. The proposed sample 2 exhibits dual-band operation covering frequency bands, 4.58–5.13 and 6.0–6.4 GHz with bandwidths of 550 and 400 MHz, respectively. Operating frequencies of the samples are in the WIMAX frequency bands. In addition, the liner to circular polarization converter design integrated to concrete has a huge potential to improve reflection and directivity parameters of many antennas if it is considered as a radome.

Cement mortars and concretes incorporating clinoptilolite, silica fume and fly ash were investigated for changes in their physical and mechanical properties. It was found that additions of 10% clinoptilolite and 10% Pozzolite (1:1 mixture of silica fume and fly ash) were optimal for improvement of the quality of the hardened products, giving 8% and 13% increases in flexural and compressive strength respectively. The specific pore volume of the mortars incorporating zeolite decreased between the 28th and 180th day to levels below the values for the control composition due to the fact that clinoptilolite exhibits its pozzolanic activity later in the hydration. In these later stages, pores with radii below 500 nm increased at the expense of larger pores. The change in the pore-size distribution between the first and sixth months of hydration occurs mostly in the mortars with added zeolite.

Hielscherite, ideally Ca3Si(OH)6(SO4)(SO3)·11H2O, (IMA 2011-037) is the first ettringite-group mineral with essential sulfite. We have identified a continuous natural solid-solution series from endmember thaumasite, Ca3Si(OH)6(SO4)(CO3)·12H2O, to a composition with at least 77 mol.% endmember hielscherite. In this series, the SO3:CO3 ratio is variable, whereas the SO4 content remains constant. Compositions with more than 50 mol.% endmember hielscherite have only been found at Graulay quarry near Hillesheim in the western Eifel Mountains, Rhineland-Palatinate, where they occur with phillipsite-K, chabazite-Ca and gypsum in cavities in alkaline basalt. Sulfite-rich thaumasite has been found in hydrothermal assemblages in young alkaline basalts in two volcanic regions of Germany: it is widespread at Graulay quarry and occurs at Rother Kopf, Schellkopf and Bellerberg quarries in Eifel district; it has also been found at Zeilberg quarry, Franconia, Bavaria. Hielscherite forms matted fibrous aggregates up to 1 cm across and groups of acicular to prismatic hexagonal crystals up to 0.3 × 0.3 × 1.5 mm. Individual crystals are colourless and transparent with a vitreous lustre and crystal aggregates are white with a silky lustre. The Mohs hardness is 2–2½. Measured and calculated densities are Dmeas = 1.82(3) and Dcalc = 1.79 g cm–3. Hielscherite is optically uniaxial (–), ω = 1.494(2), ε = 1.476(2). The mean chemical composition of holotype material (determined by electron microprobe for Ca, Al, Si, and S and gas chromatography for C, H and N, with the S4+:S6+ ratio from the crystal-structure data) is CaO 27.15, Al2O3 2.33, SiO2 7.04, CO2 2.71, SO2 6.40, SO3 12.91, N2O5 0.42, H2O 39.22, total 98.18 wt.%. The empirical formula on the basis of 3 Ca atoms per formula unit is Ca3(Si0.73Al0.28)Σ1.01(OH)5.71(SO4)1.00(SO3)0.62(CO3)0.38(NO3)0.05·10.63H2O. The presence of sulfite was confirmed by crystal-structure analysis and infrared and X-ray absorption near edge structure spectra. The crystal structure of sulfite-rich thaumasite from Zeilberg quarry was solved by direct methods based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction data (R1 = 0.064). The structure of hielscherite was refined using the Rietveld method (Rwp = 0.0317). Hielscherite is hexagonal, P63, a = 11.1178(2), c = 10.5381(2) Å, V = 1128.06(4) Å3 and Z = 2. The strongest reflections in the X-ray powder pattern [(d, Å (I)(hkl)] are: 9.62(100)(010,100); 5.551(50)(110); 4.616(37)(012,102); 3.823(64)(112); 3.436(25)(211), 2.742(38)(032,302), 2.528(37)(123,213), 2.180(35)(042,402;223). In both hielscherite and sulfite-rich thaumasite, pyramidal sulfite groups occupy the same site as trigonal carbonate groups, with analogous O sites, whereas tetrahedral sulfate groups occupy separate positions. Hielscherite is named in honour of the German mineral collector Klaus Hielscher (b. 1957).

Geological repository designs employ a multi-barrier approach. The materials, which include wasteforms, backfill and host rock, are typically porous quasi-brittle. Mechanical damage (e.g. nucleation and growth of microcracks) can result in significant changes in permeability. A knowledge of how the permeability is affected is critical to accurate modelling of radionuclide transport. This work proposes a novel 3D lattice-type model for the damage evolution in such materials, referred to as the site-bond model. Its advantages over previous models are that the shape of the lattice cell is physically realistic and that any macroscopic elastic response can be represented, including those of cementitious and geological materials. Damage accumulates as bonds fail upon reaching prescribed failure strengths. These are dictated by a predefined pore size distribution. Concrete is used as a study material. It is demonstrated that the model can predict the macroscopic stress–strain response under unconfined tension and compression with emergent non-linearity due to damage evolution. Ongoing work on the prediction of permeability changes with damage is discussed. This is based on the interaction between the model proposed here and a lattice model of the pore space.

Concrete and bentonite are being considered as engineered barriers for the deep geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste in argillaceous rocks. Three hydrothermal laboratory experiments of different scalable complexity were performed to improve our knowledge of the formation of calcium aluminate silicate hydrates (C-A-S-H) at the interface between the two materials: concretebentonite transport columns, lime mortar-bentonite transport columns and a portlandite- (bentonite and montmorillonite) batch experiment. Precipitation of C-A-S-H was observed in all experiments. Acicular and fibrous morphologies with certain laminar characteristics were observed which had smaller Ca/Si and larger Al/Si ratios with increasing temperature and lack of accessory minerals. The compositional fields of these C-A-S-H phases formed in the experiments are consistent with Al/(Si+Al) ratios of 0.2– 0.3 described in the literature. The most representative calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) phase from the montmorillonite–cement interface is Al-tobermorite. Structural analyses revealed a potential intercalation or association of montmorillonite and C-A-S-H phases at the pore scale.

In the present study, aiming to control the setting reaction and to increase the strength of hydroxyapatite-based biocements, gelatin, citric acid and malonic acid, and combinations of them, were used as binders. The mechanical strength of the developed biocements was evaluated after 1 to 15 days of exposure (aging) to air with 100% relative humidity at 37-40 °C. Especially for the case of gelatin, the mechanical properties of the biocements increased as a function of aging time in the humid environment. In this case, the standard compressive strength increased from ∼19 to ∼40 MPa, while the diametral compressive strength increased from ∼2 to ∼12 MPa, between day 1 and day 15 of aging. These values are similar to those reported in the past for HAp-containing biocements added with a variety of organic or inorganic binders. However, the resulting setting times were too long. Thus, it was proposed that crosslinking of gelatin by a suitable chemical agent during the application of the prepared HAp-based biocements could be a potential way to control their handling and setting characteristics, while preserving their good mechanical properties, good biocompatibility, and good solubilization characteristics in the presence of biological fluids.

For the UK geological disposal facility (GDF) concept in a high strength crystalline rock, Nirex Reference Vault Backfill (NRVB) has been considered to use as a cementitious backfill material. The lifetime performance of this high pH material is required to be extremely long, and as a consequence of the interaction with the geological environment (e.g. groundwater), the backfill material will evolve and age with time. In this paper, we present the results of a leaching experiment, where NRVB is placed in contact with three different groundwater compositions representative of granitic, clay and saline groundwater for 35 days. Some differences were observed related with the mineralogy. X-ray Diffraction results showed the formation of more ettringite, mainly in the NRVB samples leached in clay and saline groundwater. An increase of the pH was also observed in the NRVB samples leached with the three different ground waters, being these results in accordance with the reactive transport modelling performed.

The use of waste is rapidly becoming a supra-disciplinary field in most parts of the world where the use of industrial wastes like fly ash, granulated steel slag, silica fume, and waste fibers in construction has become very popular since the last half of the 20th century. Other forms of industrial wastes are also re-used even for more sensitive applications on soils to upgrade soil texture. For example, waste from bauxite refining (red mud) is known to be extensively re-utilised. These concepts are yet to take tangible hold in Africa, despite the huge resources available. Electric-Arc Furnace Steel slag is a major waste product from the steel industry involving the melting of scrap to make steel in an electric arc furnace. Use of such waste materials in construction alleviates the huge environmental pollution problem which often exists in areas where they are produced and/or dumped. Currently, the material is mainly used in construction works as unbound aggregate for asphalt concrete pavements, or as road base in many countries. However, it consists predominantly of oxides and silicates of magnesium, calcium, aluminium, iron and thus can be used as substitute for cement. This paper compares the effect of utilising this type of Steel slag and Granulated Blast Furness Slag, as partial replacement for Portland cement. The influence of the physical and chemical characteristics of the two materials on the setting time, compressive strength, total porosity and pore-size distribution of cement pastes have been evaluated. For the experimental conditions studied, the result reveal adequate properties for high levels of replacement but suggests that superior qualities, compared with Portland cement concrete is possible only if replacement levels do not exceed about 10%.

There is growing interest in reducing the use of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) owing to its high energy consumption and CO2 emissions. An environmentally-friendly alternative is the use of geopolymers, which can potentially reduce direct CO2 emissions through the appropriate choice of raw materials, mix design, and curing regimes. In this regard geopolymer mortars are also realistic candidates for the replacement of OPC mortars in nuclear waste immobilisation applications as they provide a more durable incorporation matrix as well as suppressing the formation of radiolytic hydrogen. The advantages of geopolymers over OPC for nuclear waste immobilisation include i) lower water content as alkaline activator is the main component that drives geopolymerisation, ii) higher thermal stability (<600°-800°C) compared to OPC concrete (<300°C), iii) higher compressive strength (50-80 MPa), and iv) lower leachability of radioactive ions when the mix design and curing temperature are appropriately balanced. UNSW and ANSTO have embarked on a long-term research program to investigate the possibility of using geopolymers for the immobilisation of Intermediate Level Liquid Waste (ILLW), the focus of which will be around the influence of gamma-irradiation on the durability.

The Supercontainer (SC) is the reference concept for the post-conditioning of vitrified high-level nuclear waste and spent fuel in Belgium. It comprises a prefabricated concrete buffer that completely surrounds a carbon steel overpack. Welding is being considered as a final closure technique of the carbon steel overpack in order to ensure its water tightness. Welding is known to induce residual stresses near the weld zone, which may lead to an increased susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking (SCC). In this study, slow strain rate tests were conducted to study the SCC behavior of plain and welded P355 QL2 grade carbon steel exposed to an artificial concrete pore water solution that is representative of the SC concrete buffer environment. The tests were performed at 140°C, a constant strain rate of 5 × 10-7 s-1 and at open circuit potential under anoxic conditions. The effect of thiosulfate on the SCC behavior was investigated up to levels of 600 mg/L S2O32-.

The dissolution of a soda-lime silicate glass in two cement leachate compositions, Young Cement Water (YCW) and Ca(OH)2, was investigated, as an analogue for dissolution of vitrified nuclear waste in a cementitious geological disposal facility. Dissolution was performed at repository temperatures (50°C) and under CO2-exclusion. Dissolution rates were observed to be a factor of 20 times higher in YCW than in Ca(OH)2, as result of the high potassium content of YCW solutions. The precipitation of the zeolite phase, K-phillipsite (K(Si,Al)8O16·6H2O), is thought to be responsible for elevated dissolution rates. Conversely, in Ca(OH)2 solutions, the precipitation of calcium- and silica-containing phases, such as tobermorite (Ca5Si6O16(OH)·4H2O), acted to reduce rates of dissolution by forming a barrier to diffusion. These results show that dissolution of vitrified nuclear waste materials in a cementitous repository may be significant during the early stages of cement leaching in groundwater.

This paper intends to analyze the microstructure of concrete with recycled aggregates (RA) from construction and demolition waste from various Portuguese recycling plants. To that effect, several scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analyses were performed. Various concrete mixes were evaluated in order to analyze the influence of the RA’s collection point and consequently of their composition on the mixes’ characteristics. Afterward all the mixes were subjected to the capillary water absorption test in order to quantitatively evaluate their porosity. Results from the SEM/EDS analysis were compared with those from capillary water absorption test. The SEM/EDS analysis showed that the bond capacity of aggregates to the new cement paste is greatly influenced by the RA’s nature. On the other hand, there was an increase in porosity with the incorporation of RA.

Two-wave methods and Three-wave method are conventional methods to process the SHPB experiment data. Due to the presence of transient waves in dynamic experiments, both the stress and strain fields within a specimen are seldom absolutely uniform. Different date processing methods lead to different results. In this paper, we have developed a program to compare the results getting from different methods. The difference of the strains corresponding to the ultimate stress can reach 20%. Which one is better? One material shouldn't have different constitutive. In order to solve the problem, we have developed Three-wave mutual-checking method, which is based on the conservation of the momentum of the whole system. This method provides a checking mechanism, so some human error can be avoided when process the same experiment data. By this method, different person can obtain the only credible stress-strain curve based on the same test data.

Several authors have reported the workability, mechanical properties, and durability of concrete produced with construction waste replacing the natural aggregate. However, a systematic microstructural characterization of recycled aggregate concrete has not been reported. This work studies the use of fine recycled aggregate to replace fine natural aggregate in the production of concrete and reports the resulting microstructures. The used raw materials were natural aggregate, recycled aggregate obtained from a standard concrete, and Portland cement. The substitution extent was 0, 10, 50, and 100 vol%; hydration was stopped at 9, 24, and 96 h and 28 days. Microscopy was focused on the cement/aggregate interfacial transition zone, enlightening the effect of incorporating recycled aggregate on the formation and morphology of the different concrete hydration products. The results show that concretes with recycled aggregates exhibit typical microstructural features of the transition zone in normal strength concrete. Although overall porosity increases with increasing replacement, the interfacial bond is apparently stronger when recycled aggregates are used. An addition of 10 vol% results in a decrease in porosity at the interface with a corresponding increase of the material hardness. This provides an opportunity for development of increased strength Portland cement concretes using controlled amounts of concrete waste.
