Summary

Account for expenditure on the building works at the palace of Westminster (mm. 1–7) and St Stephen's chapel (mm. 8–9) from Michaelmas 1343 to Michaelmas 1344 (Exchequer year 18 Edward III), but the account for the chapel covers only the period 30 Sept. to 24 Dec. 1343. Walter of Weston was the king's clerk of works at the palace of Westminster and the Tower of London.

Physical description: A roll of nine membranes, sewn end-to-end; in poor condition generally, heavily stained and written in faded ink, many entries can only be read with the aid of an ultraviolet lamp. In two places the sewing has become undone, so that mm. 2–3 and 8–9 have become detached from each other and the roll forms three separate pieces. The top section of m. 4 is torn off; a small piece is torn off at the bottom of m. 4 and top of m. 5; m. 6 has holes and the bottom left corner is torn off; m. 7 is torn down the left margin. Membranes 8 and 9, which contain the account of expenditure on the chapel, are the most heavily damaged. The right side of both membranes has been torn away completely; consequently m. 8 has lost about a third of its text and m. 9 lacks more than half; marked as enrolled.

Scope of transcription: Just one entry that may relate to St Stephen's chapel has been included from mm. 1–7 (others concern a different chapel, in the privy palace), but mm. 8–9, the chapel account, have been transcribed in full, as far as possible.
