In the present study we determined the chromatin organization and fate of introduced mitochondria in porcine embryos following intracytoplasmic injection of pig or mouse sperm cells. At 3, 6, 9 and 12 h following injection of pig or mouse spermatozoa or isolated sperm heads, the oocytes were fixed and stained with propidium iodide. Between 3 and 6 h following injection, both porcine and murine sperm chromatin developed into pronuclei. The male and female pronuclei were apposed within 12 h in porcine oocytes following sperm injection from either source. We also introduced foreign mitochondria from either mouse or pig sperm midpiece into porcine oocytes following sperm injection. While porcine sperm mitochondria rapidly disappeared from the actively developing porcine oocytes, mouse sperm mitochondria remained in the embryos until the 8-cell stage. These results suggest that pronuclear formation and movement occur between 6 and 12 h following sperm incorporation into the cytoplasm, and that foreign mitochondria are selectively removed in a species-specific manner.

The aim of this work was to examine the influence of cryostorage duration of Pinzgau bull's insemination doses (IDs) on some sperm traits. The IDs were frozen by a slow freezing method and stored in liquid nitrogen for different periods: less than 8 years (group 1), 8–13 years (group 2) and 14–18 years (group 3). Motility (CASA), pathological sperm rate (Giemsa staining), apoptotic (Yo-Pro-1-positive) and necrotic (propidium iodide-positive) cell occurrence and fertilizing ability (penetration/fertilization test) of spermatozoa were evaluated post-thaw. The average post-thaw sperm motility in all examined groups was over 40%. No significant influence of storage length either on the sperm total motility or progressive movement was revealed. In each tested group the average rate of malformed spermatozoa did not exceed 20%. No effect of cryostorage length on the occurrence of apoptotic or necrotic sperm was noted. Similarly, penetrating/fertilizing ability of sperm did not differ among the groups, excepting differences in the rate of pronuclei (PN) formation. In group 1, 72.9% of eggs showed two visible PN following 20 h incubation with sperm, whilst in groups 2 and 3 only 67 and 54.5% of zygotes, respectively, had both PN at this time. These results revealed no influence of storage time on the bull spermatozoa in all parameters excepting the rate of PN formation. As high inter-male variability was observed in the susceptibility of bull sperm to cryostorage, individual differences should be taken into account when semen from individual bulls is to be stored for a long time.

Cell proliferation and cell death are essential processes in the physiology of the developing testis that strongly influence the normal adult spermatogenesis. We analysed in this study the morphometry, the expression of the proliferation cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), cell pluripotency marker OCT-4, germ cell marker VASA and apoptosis in the developing testes of Lagostomus maximus, a rodent in which female germ line develops through abolished apoptosis and unrestricted proliferation. Morphometry revealed an increment in the size of the seminiferous cords with increasing developmental age, arising from a significant increase of PCNA-positive germ cells and a stable proportion of PCNA-positive Sertoli cells. VASA showed a widespread cytoplasmic distribution in a great proportion of proliferating gonocytes that increased significantly at late development. In the somatic compartment, Leydig cells increased at mid-development, whereas peritubular cells showed a stable rate of proliferation. In contrast to other mammals, OCT-4 positive gonocytes increased throughout development reaching 90% of germ cells in late-developing testis, associated with a conspicuous increase in circulating FSH from mid- to late-gestation. TUNEL analysis was remarkable negative, and only a few positive cells were detected in the somatic compartment. These results show that the South American plains viscacha displays a distinctive pattern of testis development characterized by a sustained proliferation of germ cells throughout development, with no signs of apoptosis cell demise, in a peculiar endocrine in utero ambiance that seems to promote the increase of spermatogonial number as a primary direct effect of FSH.

This work analyses the changes that caprine spermatozoa undergo during in vitro fertilization (IVF) of in vitro matured prepubertal goat oocytes and their relationship with IVF outcome, in order to obtain an effective model that allows prediction of in vitro fertility on the basis of semen assessment. The evolution of several sperm parameters (motility, viability and acrosomal integrity) during IVF and their relationship with three IVF outcome criteria (total penetration, normal penetration and cleavage rates) were studied in a total of 56 IVF replicates. Moderate correlation coefficients between some sperm parameters and IVF outcome were observed. In addition, stepwise multiple regression analyses were conducted that considered three grouping of sperm parameters as potential explanatory variables of the three IVF outcome criteria. The proportion of IVF outcome variation that can be explained by the fitted models ranged from 0.62 to 0.86, depending upon the trait analysed and the variables considered. Seven out of 32 sperm parameters were selected as partial covariates in at least one of the nine multiple regression models. Among these, progressive sperm motility assessed immediately after swim-up, the percentage of dead sperm with intact acrosome and the incidence of acrosome reaction both determined just before the gamete co-culture, and finally the proportion of viable spermatozoa at 17 h post-insemination were the most frequently selected sperm parameters. Nevertheless, the predictive ability of these models must be confirmed in a larger sample size experiment.

Each oestrous cycle the ovary produces one or more oocytes, depending on the species considered, which are fully competent to sustain the development of a new individual and are defined as matured. Ovulation is the terminal phase of a lengthy and complex selection process which enables only a minute proportion of the oocytes present in the ovary to be ovulated and possibly fertilised. The use of exogenous gonadotrophins for the pharmacological stimulation of the ovaries has clearly indicated that oocytes naturally excluded by the selection process can also be matured and, if fertilised in vivo or in vitro, can generate normal offspring.

Approximately 50% of rat 8-cell embryos obtained from the oviduct on day 4 of pregnancy developed to the balstocyst stage after 18 h of incubation in vitro. The embroys were compared with in vivo blastocysts derived from the uterus on day 5 of pregnancy as regards their response to vitrification treatment. Before vitrification, both types of embryos were exposed to vitrification solution, and subsequent embryonic development was inhibited with increasing time of exposure. A greater suppression of development after exposure was observed in the embryos cultured in vitro compared with in vivo blastocysts. However, development was gradually restored as in vitro incubation was continued. The response of embryos to vitrification and warming treatments was shown to be almost the same for both in vitro and in vivo blastocysts, though the former were significantly (p < 0.05) less tolerant of exposure to vitrification solution. These results suggest that in vitro blastocysts were much more susceptible to vitrification solution than in vivo blastocysts. The degree of damage caused by vitrification and thawing treatments, and the inhibition of in vitro embryonic development, were significantly (p < 0.05) more serious for in vitro blastocysts.

In higher plants, fertilization induces many structural and physiological changes in the fertilized egg that reflect the transition from the haploid female gamete to the diploid zygote – the first cell of the sporophyte. After fusion of the egg nucleus with the sperm nucleus, many molecular changes occur in the zygote during the process of zygote activation during embryogenesis. The zygote originates from the egg, from which some pre-stored translation initiation factors transfer into the zygote and function during zygote activation. This indicates that the control of zygote activation is pre-set in the egg. After the egg and sperm nuclei fuse, gene expression is activated in the zygote, and paternal and maternal gene expression patterns are displayed. This highlights the diversity of zygotic genome activation in higher plants. In addition to new gene expression in the zygote, some genes show quantitative changes in expression. The asymmetrical division of the zygote produces an apical cell and a basal cell that have different destinies during plant reconstruction; these destinies are determined in the zygote. This review describes significant advances in research on the mechanisms controlling zygote activation in higher plants.

Oocyte gene expression is a well controlled event that promotes gamete competence to undergo maturation, fertilization, and to support early embryo development, directly affecting reproductive outcomes. Considering that in vivo controlled ovarian stimulation or in vitro maturation (IVM) for the acquisition of mature oocytes has distinct implications for gene expression, we sought to evaluate the effects of these procedures on the expression of competence-related genes in single-cell oocytes. Healthy Nelore cows of reproductive age were synchronized to harvest in vivo matured oocytes; ovaries from slaughtered animals were used to obtain cumulus–oocyte complexes that were in vitro matured. Single-cell gene expression was performed using TaqMan Low-Density Arrays and 42 genes were evaluated. In silico analysis of protein interactions and Gene Ontology (GO) analysis was performed. Reduced gene expression was observed for 24 targets in IVM oocytes when compared with those of in vivo matured oocytes (P < 0.05). Differences ranged from 1.5-fold to 4.8-fold higher in in vivo oocytes and the BMP15 (5.28), GDF9 (6.23), NOBOX (7.25), HSPA8 (7.85) and MSX1 (11.00) showed the greatest fold increases. The strongest score of functional interactions was observed between the CDC20 and CKS2, with the differentially expressed gene CDC20 being the main marker behind GO enrichment. IVM negatively affected the expression of important genes related to oocyte competency, and showed higher expression levels in in vivo matured oocytes. In vivo controlled ovarian stimulation may be a better strategy to achieve proper oocyte competence and increase the success of assisted reproductive technologies.

Methomyl is a broad-spectrum carbamate insecticide that has a variety of toxic effects on humans and animals. However, there have been no studies on the toxicity of methomyl in female mammalian oocytes. This study investigated the toxic effects of environmental oestrogen methomyl exposure on mouse oocyte maturation and its possible mechanisms. Our results indicated that methomyl exposure inhibited polar body extrusion in mouse oocytes. Compared with that in the control group, in the methomyl treatment group, superoxide anion free radicals in oocytes were significantly increased. In addition, the mitochondrial membrane potential of metaphase II stage oocytes in the methomyl treatment group was significantly decreased, resulting in reduced mouse oocyte quality. After 8.5 h of exposure to methomyl, metaphase I stage mouse oocytes displayed an abnormal spindle morphology. mRNA expression of the pro-apoptotic genes Bax and Caspase-3 in methomyl-treated oocytes increased, which confirmed the apoptosis. Collectively, our results indicated that mouse oocyte maturation is defective after methomyl treatment at least through disruption of spindle morphology, mitochondrial function and by induction of oxidative stress.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of regulating phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) activity on the kinetics of oocyte nuclear maturation and the blastocyst rate. To evaluate oocyte viability, nuclear maturation rate and in vitro embryo production, cumulus–oocyte complexes (COCs) were maintained for 0, 10 min, 6 h or 22 h in TCM 199 medium supplemented with 20 nM wortmannin, an inhibitor of PI3K. After each period, COCs were transferred to the same medium without wortmannin and kept under the same conditions until completion of 22 h of in vitro maturation (IVM). To evaluate the effect of time on progression of nuclear maturation, COCs cultivated with 20 nM wortmannin was maintained for 22, 28 or 34 h of IVM. To determine the effect of wortmannin on the activity of maturation-promoting factor (MPF), COCs were kept under IVM conditions in the presence of the inhibitor for 0, 1, 3, 6, or 8 h. Exposure of COCs to wortmannin decreased (P < 0.05) the percentage of oocytes that reached metaphase II (MII) up to 22 h, MPF activity and reduced PI3K activity by 30%. However, after 28 and 34 h, 70% of oocytes reached the MII stage in the presence of inhibitor Moreover, COCs matured in the presence of wortmannin showed an increase (P < 0.05) in the blastocyst rate. These findings suggested that the regulation of the PI3K activity during IVM of bovine COCs interfered with the meiotic progression due to control of MPF activity, positively affecting the blastocyst rate.

Polyspermy was initiated by microinjecting a multiple number of sperm into the activated and dechorionated eggs of dojo loach Misgurnus anguillicaudatus (Teleostei: Cobitidae). A 10-nl sperm suspension from an albino (recessive trait) male (105, 106, 107 or 108 sperm ml −1) was microinjected into eggs from a wild-type female. Although the rates of embryos developing into the blastula stage in the injection group at the highest sperm concentration were similar to that of the control group, the hatching rates of the injection group were much lower. A large proportion of embryos that developed from the injected eggs was haploid and were mosaics containing haploid cells. Most of the haploid and mosaic embryos inherited only paternally derived alleles in the microsatellite markers (i.e. androgenesis was initiated by injecting multiple sperm). In contrast, some haploid embryos contained both paternal and maternal alleles despite haploidy, suggesting that they were mosaics consisting of cells with either paternal or maternal inheritance. The injected eggs displayed diploid, hypotriploid and triploid cells, all of which included both maternally and paternally derived alleles. One albino tetraploid with only paternal alleles was also observed from the injected eggs. These results suggested that part of the sperm microinjected into the ooplasm should form a male pronucleus/pronuclei, which could develop by androgenesis or could fuse with the female pronucleus/pronuclei. Therefore, microinjection of multiple sperm should be considered a potential technique to induce androgenesis and polyploidy.

This study aimed to analyze the clinical effects of microdissection testicular sperm extraction (micro-TESE) surgery combined with an intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) regimen in the treatment of non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) patients with different etiologies. In total, 128 NOA patients participated in this study, in which they received infertility treatment by micro-TESE surgery combined with an ICSI regimen, and all patients were divided into three groups [the Klinefelter syndrome (KS), the idiopathic and the secondary NOA groups]. In addition, the sperm retrieval rate (SRR), fertilization rate, embryo development status and clinical treatment effects were analyzed. Among the 128 NOA patients, the SRR of KS NOA patients was 48.65%, those of idiopathic and the secondary patients were 33.82% and 73.91%, respectively. Regardless of etiologies, there was no correlation with age, hormone value or testicular volume. Further analysis showed that the SRR of the KS group was positively related with testosterone (T) values, and the SRR of the secondary group had a positive relationship with follicle-stimulating hormone or luteinizing hormone values. In the subsequent clinical treatment, the retrieved sperm was subjected to ICSI and achieved good treatment effects, especially in the secondary group, and the implantation rate (55.56%) and clinical pregnancy rate (68.42%) were both higher than those of the idiopathic group (28.75% and 40.00%) and KS group (22.05% and 30.77%). Micro-TESE surgery combined with ICSI insemination is the most effective treatment regimen for NOA patients. The SRR of NOA patients with different etiologies are related to certain specific factors, and micro-TESE surgery seems to be the ideal and only way to have biological children.

In the treatment of infertile patients with non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) caused by the deletion of the azoospermia factor c region (AZFc) on the Y chromosome, synchronous and asynchronous surgical strategies are discussed. Clinical data from NOA patients with the AZFc deletion who underwent micro-TESE were analyzed retrospectively. The sperm retrieval rate (SRR) and sperm utilization rate of synchronous and asynchronous operation groups were followed up and compared. The fertilization rate, high-quality embryo rate, clinical pregnancy rate, abortion rate, and cumulative live birth rate of ICSI in patients with successful sperm retrieval were compared between the two groups. The two groups had sperm utilization rates of 98.9% (93/94) and 50.0% (14/28), respectively. The asynchronous group’s sperm consumption rates were much lower than those of the synchronous operation group. Fertilization rate, high-quality embryo rate, clinical pregnancy rate of fresh transfer cycle, abortion rate, and cumulative live birth rate of patients in the synchronous operation group with fresh sperm, and the asynchronous operation group with thawed sperm, respectively, were 30.6% vs 33.8%, 33.8% vs 40.7%, 40.0% vs 12.5%, 30.4% vs 7.1%. Between the two groups, there was no significant difference. This suggests that individuals with NOA caused by the AZFc deletion have a high possibility of successfully acquiring sperm using micro-TESE and ICSI to conceive their own offspring. Synchronous micro-TESE is recommended to improve sperm utilization rate and the cumulative live birth rate.

Numerous studies have reported comparisons of the nuclear-to-cytoplasmic (NC) ratio during mitosis. However, little information is known about how the pronuclear size is regulated and determined at the end of meiosis II in mammalian zygotes. The present study aims to analyze the NC ratio of female and male pronuclei, and also to compare the size of single pronuclei using photographs that were obtained during experiments to create chimeric hermaphrodites from 2-cell oocytes. The volume of both the female and the male pronucleus was found to correlate with the volume of the oocyte cytoplasm. The NC ratio of the male pronucleus was greater than that of the female pronucleus. The NC ratio of the average volume of the female and male pronuclei was greater than the NC ratio of the mononucleate oocytes. The occurrence of 1PN oocytes was significantly higher when the volume of cytoplasm was lower than the cut-off value. These results indicated that the NC ratio is retained during pronuclear formation. A higher NC ratio in male compared with the female pronucleus indicated structural and/or molecular difference between the two pronuclei. 1PN formation may occur when sperm enters close to the MII spindle.

Cloning older adult rabbits can serve as a model in animal breeding, biodiversity preservation and in human therapeutic cloning. To establish the required exposure time of fibroblasts from these kind of animals to reprogramming factors, in the present study three different time intervals between fusion and activation were tested (30 min, 30-ADF group; 60 min, 60-ADF group; and 90 min, 90-ADF group). Vitrified epithelial fibroblasts derived from four older adult rabbit females (D1, D2, D3 and D4) and cultured from passages 0 to 4 were used as nuclear donors. Nuclear status of reconstructed embryos was not evaluated. No differences were observed in blastocyst rate (30-ADF 21% vs 60-ADF 19% vs 90-ADF 18%). Differences in hatching rates did not reach significance (30-ADF 11% vs 60-ADF 18% vs 90-ADF 18%). However, in the 60- and 90-ADF groups, embryos reached the blastocyst stage earlier than in the 30-ADF group (day 4: 40% and 50% vs 8%; p>0.05). Moreover, the quality of blastocysts (good vs poor) was lower in the 30-ADF group (good: 30-ADF 38% vs 60-ADF 90% vs 90-ADF 90%; p>0.05). Overall, these results suggest an unfavourable effect of the shortest exposure time tested (30 min). Differences between specimen origins were detected (blastocyst and hatching rates: D2 (26%; 25%) and D4 (25%; 27%) vs D1 (10%; 11%) and D3 (12%; 12%)), but significance were not reached. Effect of culture passage was not detected in any parameter studied.

The relative mRNA abundance of 10 genes associated with folliculogenesis was compared between late preantral (secondary) and early antral (tertiary) ovarian follicles in goats. In total, 100 follicles in each category were mechanically isolated. The relative transcript abundance of the mRNAs were determined by qPCR. Data were analyzed using unpaired Student’s t-test. Of the 10 tested genes, ABLIM mRNA was not detected in either follicle category, six genes (SLIT3, TYMS, GTPBP1, AKR1C4, PIK3R6, and MAOB) were upregulated in secondary follicles compared with tertiary follicles, and three genes (ARHGEF12, CLEC6A, and CYTL1) showed similar mRNA abundances in both secondary and tertiary follicles. In conclusion, SLIT3, GTPBP1, AKR1C4, and PIK3R6 mRNA abundance was upregulated in secondary follicles (preantral phase) compared with in tertiary follicles (antral phase) in goats.

It has previously been reported that in ex vivo planar explants prepared from Xenopus laevis embryos, the intracellular pH (pHi) increases in cells of the dorsal ectoderm from stage 10.5 to 11.5 (i.e. 11–12.5 hpf). It was proposed that such increases (potentially due to H+ being extruded, sequestered, or buffered in some manner), play a role in regulating neural induction. Here, we used an extracellular ion-selective electrode to non-invasively measure H+ fluxes at eight locations around the equatorial circumference of intact X. laevis embryos between stages 9–12 (˜7–13.25 hpf). We showed that at stages 9–11, there was a small H+ efflux recorded from all the measuring positions. At stage 12 there was a small, but significant, increase in the efflux of H+ from most locations, but the efflux from the dorsal side of the embryo was significantly greater than from the other positions. Embryos were also treated from stages 9–12 with bafilomycin A1, to block the activity of the ATP-driven H+ pump. By stage 22 (24 hpf), these embryos displayed retarded development, arresting before the end of gastrulation and therefore did not display the usual anterior and neural structures, which were observed in the solvent-control embryos. In addition, expression of the early neural gene, Zic3, was absent in treated embryos compared with the solvent controls. Together, our new in vivo data corroborated and extended the earlier explant-derived report describing changes in pHi that were suggested to play a role during neural induction in X. laevis embryos.

Long-term heat stress (HS) induced by testicular insulation generates oxidative stress (OS) on the testicular environment; consequently activating antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). The aim of this work was to immunolocalize antioxidant enzymes present in different cells within the seminiferous tubule when rams were submitted to HS. Rams were divided into control (n = 6) and treated group (n = 6), comprising rams subjected to testicular insulation for 240 h. After the testicular insulation period, rams were subjected to orchiectomy. Testicular fragments were submitted to immunohistochemistry for staining against SOD, GR and GPx enzymes. We observed immunolocalization of GPx in more cell types of the testis after HS and when compared with other enzymes. In conclusion, GPx is the main antioxidant enzyme identified in testicular cells in an attempt to maintain oxidative balance when HS occurs.

The knowledge of genetic parameters of performance traits is crucial for any breeding programme in dairy animals. The present study was conducted to use a Bayesian approach for estimation of genetic parameters of production and reproduction traits in Jersey crossbred cattle. Data of Jersey crossbred cattle maintained at Eastern Regional Station, National Dairy Research Institute, West Bengal spread over a span of 41 years were utilized. The marginal posterior medians of heritability for 305-day milk yield (305MY), total milk yield (TMY), peak yield (PY), lactation length (LL), calving interval (CI), total milk yield per day of lactation length (TMY/LL) and total milk yield per day of calving interval (TMY/CI) were 0.31 ± 0.07, 0.29 ± 0.07, 0.27 ± 0.06, 0.16 ± 0.05, 0.15 ± 0.05, 0.29 ± 0.06, 0.27 ± 0.06, respectively. Moderate heritability estimates for 305MY, TMY, PY and production efficiency traits indicate the presence of adequate additive genetic variance in these traits to respond to selection combined with better herd management. Repeatability estimates for 305MY, TMY, PY, LL, CI, TMY/LL and TMY/CI were 0.57 ± 0.08, 0.58 ± 0.08, 0.51 ± 0.07, 0.34 ± 0.06, 0.31 ± 0.06, 0.54 ± 0.07 and 0.49 ± 0.07, respectively. Repeatability estimates for 305MY, TMY and PY were high in the current study, suggesting the use of first lactation records for early evaluation of Jersey crossbred cattle for future selection. Genetic correlations varied from 0.21 to 0.97 and maximum genetic correlation was observed between 305MY and TMY indicating that consideration of 305MY instead of TMY in breeding programmes would suffice. Positive genetic correlations of CI with 305MY and TMY indicated the antagonistic association between production and reproduction traits.

The protein pattern of the follicular fluid (FF) and the ultrastructure of the inner cumulus–oocyte complex (COC) has been analysed in single antral follicles (n = 146) of buffalo B. Bubalis ovaries. The protein population of FF was fractionated by SDS-PAGE; the resulting pattern was Coomassie stained and processed for densitometry. Comparartive analysis of sera and autologous FFs showed a marked difference in the level (measured as the percentage of total proteins) of one 21 kDa polypeptide band, called ‘L’. Concentration of L, which was mainly higher in the serum (2.05 ± 1.5%) than in the surrounding FF(0.98 ± 0.94%), fluctuated widely in fluids from the in the same ovary. On gel filtration of FF and SDS-PAGE of ther factions collected, the L polypeptide was found and eluted together with a 36 kDa polypeptide, called ‘H’, with an exclusion volume lower than that of albumin. The levels of both polypeptides in the eluted fractions were measured by gel densitometry and the same ratio H/L was found (2:1). These data suggest that H and L are subunits of a complex high-molecular-weight protein. The presence of L levels in male sera comparable to those detected in females indicates that this putative protein does not originate in the ovary but is transported from the blood. Moreover, a correlation between the increase in the percentage of Lf (calculated as %L in FF/%L in serum) and atresia was observed. COCs (n = 86) obtained during the collection of the single FF samples were processed for transmission electron microscopy. The ultrastructure of each COC was compared with the SDS-PAGE data of the associated FF. Healthy COCs were found to be related to very low levels of Lf (between 0 and 14% of those measured in serum). COCs with an early atretic ultrastructure undetectable at the dissection microscope, were associated with FFs having Lf levels between 24% and 60%; advanced atresia was associated with Lf values up to 70%. Finally, the acrosome reaction of buffalo precapacitated spermatozoa in vitro was monitored by adding one volume of FF with high (FF +; Lf = 80%) or undetectable (FF - ) values of Lf to the sperm suspension. It was found that 96.2% of spermatozoa treated with FF - showed a normal acrosome reaction, without any change in their motility pattern; spermatozoa treated with FF +, in contrast, exhibited poor motility, and only 66.4% of them underwent the acrosome reaction. The ionophore A23187, in a control experiment, resulted in lower percentages of acrosome reactions (38%). In conclusion, our results suggest that enhanced influx of L from serum into the follicle antrum causes an increase in the polypeptide level in FF. This might be due to a loss of selectivity in the blood-follicle barrier of early atretic follicles. The use of the L polypeptide as a biochemical marker for identifying the earlier stage of follicular atresia is proposed.
