The first weed contest was held at the Eli Lilly Research Farm at Albany, GA, in late May 1980. From the original idea of David Teem of FL, a contest evolved that was sanctioned by the Southern Weed Science Society in 1981. In August 1981, the first North Central Collegiate Weed Science Contest was held at the Agri-Growth Research Farm, Hollandale, MN. An undergraduate division was established in 1982. The Northeast Collegiate Weed Science Contest began in 1983 at the Wye Research Center in Queenstown, MD, with both graduate and undergraduate formats. The North Central contest annually has the most participants followed by the Southern and Northeast contests. Representatives from 39 universities have competed in at least one contest. The three contests follow a similar format that includes four events: plant and seed identification of weed species, identification of herbicides from plant symptoms, calibration of herbicide application equipment, and crop/weed problems and recommendations. Preparation by universities has varied from minimal to establishing a class to prepare students for the contest. Regardless of the level of preparation, the weed contests have developed into one of the most anticipated and worthwhile experiences for students and university and industry personnel.

Dithiopyr was applied to ‘Penneagle’ creeping bentgrass seedlings 2, 4, and 8 wk after emergence (WAE) in separate studies in the summers of 1992 and 1993 to determine seedling tolerance. Dithiopyr emulsifiable concentrate (IEC) was applied at 0.14, 0.28, 0.42, and 0.56 kg ai/ha, and granular (G) dithiopyr (0.1G) was applied at 0.14, 0.21, 0.28, and 0.42 kg/ha. Dithiopyr applied 2 WAE caused unacceptable injury regardless of rate or formulation. Injury was characterized by stunting of plants, leaf tip die-back, yellowing of older leaves, and a visible decline in quality. Injury increased with increasing rate. In 1992, the EC and G formulation of dithiopyr caused similar responses, whereas in the summer of 1993, the EC caused greater turf injury. Dithiopyr applied 4 WAE caused less injury than when applied 2 WAE, and injury was acceptable. Dithiopyr applied 8 WAE only slightly injured creeping bentgrass at the high rate for both formulations in both years.

Field experiments were conducted at two locations in 2003 and 2004 to determine dark tobacco tolerance and weed control from postemergence over-the-top (POT) and postemergence-directed (PD) applications of trifloxysulfuron and halosulfuron. Trifloxysulfuron was applied at 3.6 or 5.3 g ai/ha and halosulfuron was applied at 36 or 53 g ai/ha. Trifloxysulfuron POT injured ‘Narrowleaf Madole’ dark tobacco 16 to 33% and halosulfuron POT caused 32 to 33% injury at 1 wk after treatment (WAT). Tobacco plant height at 1 WAT with POT applications was also reduced by up to 31% at one of two locations. Tobacco injury from POT applications had dissipated to 6 to 12% by 4 WAT. Despite extensive early-season injury, most POT herbicide applications did not significantly reduce tobacco yield, mean grade index, and gross revenue compared to tobacco that only received pretransplant applications of sulfentrazone plus clomazone. Dark tobacco was much more tolerant to PD applications of either herbicide, with no more than 4% injury observed at 1 WAT. Neither herbicide controlled horsenettle more than 57% at either application rate or method. Although trifloxysulfuron and halosulfuron could contribute to tobacco weed control programs by providing postemergence control of several common weed species, PD applications would be the only acceptable method of application due to excessive injury observed from POT applications of these herbicides.

A tractor mounted sampler was constructed which allows large soil columns to be obtained rapidly and with minimal physical effort. The machine utilizes the hydraulic system of a tractor to push a steel sampling cylinder containing 30.5-cm id. polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe into the soil, after which the hydraulic cylinder is retracted to pull the pipe and enclosed soil from the ground. Columns 68 cm in length were taken with a hydraulic cylinder pressure of approximately 10 MPa. Soil separated evenly at the bottom of the columns, and compaction was measured to be approximately 5%. This is a relatively simple and rapid method for obtaining large soil columns for use in pesticide leaching studies.

Field studies with flatfan, twinjet, flood and rotary atomizers were conducted in 1987 and 1988. The results indicated that tridiphane at 0.6 kg ai/ha plus atrazine at 1.7 kg ai/ha with 2.0 L/ha of soybean oil adjuvant was more effective in controlling giant foxtail and common lambsquarters when applied by the flatfan, twinjet, and rotary atomizers. Image analysis indicated that weed control by a postemergence herbicide was generally enhanced by better application coverage. Droplet size measurement by phase droplet particle/droplet analyzer demonstrated that the rotary atomizer produced a narrower range of droplet diameters between the Dv.1 and Dv.9 volumes than any of the other atomizers.

Field studies were conducted at the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station near Shorter, AL, from 1998 to 2000 to evaluate six commercial spray adjuvants and their effects on glyphosate applied to cotton with an air-assisted sprayer. Each adjuvant was evaluated with a conventional sprayer calibrated to deliver 94 L/ha solution and a low-volume, air-assisted sprayer calibrated to deliver 19 L/ha solution. Glyphosate was applied to two-leaf pitted and entireleaf morningglory growing in glyphosate-resistant cotton. Visual control of pitted and entireleaf morningglory was more dependent on the rate of herbicide application than on a particular adjuvant or sprayer, with glyphosate at 0.42 kg ae/ha providing 70% control 21 d after treatment. Pitted and entireleaf morningglory biomass measurements generally reflected visual control data. Ammonium sulfate and formulated glyphosate consistently gave the highest visual control and the greatest biomass reduction. Glyphosate application rate was more important than adjuvant addition or sprayer type, with the higher rates of application providing greater control. No differences in weed control were observed between spray systems; therefore, air-assisted sprayers may be used on a field-scale basis with consistent and adequate results.

Herbicide systems consisting of PRE, early POST, and late POST options arranged factorially were compared for control of sicklepod in narrow-row soybean with modified acetolactate synthase (ALS) (E.C.4.1.3.18). Other weeds present included common cocklebur and mixed infestations of entireleaf, ivyleaf, pitted, and tall morningglories. PRE options were alachlor or alachlor plus metribuzin plus chlorimuron. Early POST options included chlorimuron, chlorimuron plus thifensulfuron, and no herbicide applied 3 wk after planting. Late POST options were chlorimuron and no herbicide applied 5 wk after planting. POST herbicides were more effective than PRE herbicides on all weeds. Chlorimuron and chlorimuron plus thifensulfuron applied early POST were equally effective on these weeds and usually more effective than chlorimuron applied late POST. There was no advantage of two POST applications compared with a single early POST application. Greatest net returns were obtained in systems using only early POST herbicides. There was no economic advantage from using metribuzin plus chlorimuron PRE in systems that included an early POST herbicide.

Field experiments were conducted near Marianna, Trenton, and Archer, FL in 1990 and 1991 to investigate the effect of nicosulfuron mixtures and time of application on five peanut cultivars. Nicosulfuron at 54 g ai/ha was applied alone or in mixture with 2,4-DB at 280 g ai/ha 5 weeks after planting (WAP), 9 WAP, or 5 plus 9 WAP. Injury was greater from early and sequential nicosulfuron applications while a single application 9 WAP typically did not cause significant injury or reduce peanut yield. The 5 WAP and 5 plus 9 WAP applications often caused early visible injury and sometimes reduced peanut yield. When peanut yields were compared, ‘Florigiant’ was the most sensitive cultivar while ‘Southern Runner’ and ‘Valencia’ were more tolerant to nicosulfuron. ‘Sunrunner’ and ‘NC-7’ were intermediate in tolerance to nicosulfuron. In several instances, the addition of 2,4-DB to nicosulfuron reduced initial crop injury and ameliorated yield losses resulting from nicosulfuron applied alone.

Experiments were conducted in the greenhouse and in the field to determine the influence of flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) seeding depth on tolerance to trifluralin [2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzenamine]. Flax stand and fresh weight generally decreased as flax seeding depth increased within or below trifluralin-treated soil. Seeding flax below a trifluralin-treated soil layer did not increase tolerance to trifluralin. Although 0.8 kg ai/ha of trifluralin reduced stand when flax was seeded 3 to 6 cm deep in the field, seed yield remained constant.

The recent registration of sulfentrazone, a selective, soil-applied, PRE herbicide labeled for control of various weeds in cranberry, expanded the number of modes of action that could be used in the crop. A 2018 preliminary study in Massachusetts showed that high rates of sulfentrazone applied at the cabbage head stage reduced the number of flowering uprights (vertical stems) without impacting the final yield. To clarify the use patterns needed to promote crop safety when using sulfentrazone, six studies were conducted in New Jersey and Massachusetts in 2019 and 2020. Studies compared sulfentrazone applications made at two timings (spring dormant, SD; or cabbage head [CH] stage), two rates (280 and 420 g ai ha−1), and three application volumes simulating either chemigation (3,740 L ha−1) or boom application (190 L ha−1 alone or followed by 0.25 cm water wash-off). Boom application studies in New Jersey in 2018 and 2019 did not show significant long-lasting injury (necrosis or stunting). However, a comprehensive observation of cranberry uprights 8 wk after treatment showed a high rate of terminal bud necrosis, a reduction in the number of reproductive structures, and the development of axillary shoots associated with a high rate of sulfentrazone applied at CH. A mitigation study conducted in 2019 and 2020 confirmed the safety of chemigated sulfentrazone at the high rate with no yield reduction, regardless of crop stage at application. Washing off the herbicide from the cranberry canopy immediately after boom application did prevent the necrosis of terminal bud and the related development of nonproductive secondary shoots. Considering the results of this study, application of sulfentrazone over the top of cranberry vine before scales of the terminal bud start loosening would be prudent practice at this time.

Thioproline (L-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid) partially protects sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench. ‘DK 42Y’] seedlings against the herbicides tridiphane [2-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-2-(2,2,2-trichloroethyl)oxirane] and alachlor [2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)-N-(methoxymethyl)acetamide] in controlled environment chambers. Thioproline alone inhibits plant growth at concentrations above 10−5 M. Its phytotoxicity is intermediate between the two herbicide antidotes OTC (L-2-oxothiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid) and flurazole [phenylmethyl 2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)-5-thiazolecarboxylate]. The two thiazolidine antidotes increased thiol content of excised corn (Zea mays L. ‘DK T 1100’) seedling roots whereas thiol content was decreased by the two herbicides. While thioproline or OTC partially offset tridiphane-induced decreases in thiol content, none of the antidotes effectively circumvented the reduced thiol content resulting from alachlor treatment.

Chinese milkvetch is the most important green manure crop in the rice producing regions of China. The tolerance of Chinese milkvetch to 29 herbicides approved for other legume crops was determined in the greenhouse. Chinese milkvetch was tolerant to bentazon, diclofop-methyl, and EPTC at 2.0, 1.6, and 6.0 kg ai ha–1, respectively. Barban, bromoxynil, 2,4-DB, dinoseb, fluazifop, quizalofop, sethoxydim, and triallate at 0.5, 0.6, 1.0, 1.5, 0.3, 0.3, 0.5, and 1.0 kg ai ha–1, respectively, slightly injured Chinese milkvetch but did not substantially reduce biomass. Trifluralin, propham, DCPA, acifluorfen, and MCPA were moderately phytotoxic to Chinese milkvetch at 0.5, 3.0, 5.0, 0.5, and 0.5 kg ai ha–1, respectively.

Small broomrape is a holoparasitic plant that attaches to the roots of red clover as well as several other host plants. Hosts and false hosts produce stimulants that induce small broomrape germination but small broomrape does not attach to a false host. Wheat has been identified as a false host for small broomrape; therefore, studies were conducted to investigate the effect of red clover and wheat root exudates on small broomrape germination. In one study, the effect of exudates from red clover and wheat at multiple growth stages on small broomrape germination was evaluated. Red clover induced small broomrape germination at all growth stages tested but was greatest (78%) in the presence of exudates from red clover at the three-trifoliolate stage. Maximum small broomrape germination was 25% when exposed to exudates produced by one-leaf-stage wheat. In a second study, the relationship between small broomrape germination and host growth condition was evaluated using root exudates from red clover or wheat grown under several temperature conditions for either 4 or 8 wk. For the different temperatures, there were no differences in small broomrape germination when exudates of red clover grown for 4 wk were used. Small broomrape germination was reduced when exposed to exudates from red clover plants grown for 8 wk at 10 C compared with plants grown at 15, 20, and 25 C. Differences in small broomrape seed germination were observed with temperature under which wheat was grown for 4 wk, but not for 8 wk. Although wheat exudates resulted in less small broomrape seed germination than red clover exudates, growing wheat as a false host in a small broomrape-infested field could be an important component of an integrated management plan.

Management options are needed to limit sweetpotato yield loss due to weeds. Greenhouse studies were conducted in 2018 in Greensboro, NC, and in the field from 2016 to 2018 in Clinton, NC, to evaluate the effect of bicyclopyrone on sweetpotato and Palmer amaranth (field only). In greenhouse studies, Covington and NC04-531 clones were treated with bicyclopyrone (0, 25, 50, 100, or 150 g ai ha−1) either preplant (PP; i.e., immediately before transplanting) or post-transplant (PT; i.e., on the same day after transplanting). Sweetpotato plant injury and stunting increased, and vine length and shoot dry weight decreased with increasing rate of bicyclopyrone regardless of clone or application timing. In field studies, Beauregard (2016) or Covington (2017 and 2018) sweetpotato clones were treated with bicyclopyrone at 50 g ha−1 PP, flumioxazin at 107 g ai ha−1 PP, bicyclopyrone at 50 or 100 g ha−1 PP followed by (fb) S-metolachlor at 800 g ai ha−1 PT, flumioxazin at 107 g ha−1 PP fb S-metolachlor at 800 g ha−1 PT, flumioxazin at 107 g ha−1 PP fb S-metolachlor at 800 g ha−1 PT fb bicyclopyrone at 50 g ha−1 PT-directed, and clomazone at 420 g ai ha−1 PP fb S-metolachlor at 800 g ha−1 PT. Bicyclopyrone PP at 100 g ha−1 fb S-metolachlor PT caused 33% or greater crop stunting and 44% or greater marketable yield reduction compared with the weed-free check in 2016 (Beauregard) and 2017 (Covington). Bicyclopyrone PP at 50 g ha−1 alone or fb S-metolachlor PT resulted in 12% or less injury and similar no. 1 and jumbo yields as the weed-free check in 2 of 3 yr. Injury to Covington from bicyclopyrone PT-directed was 4% or less at 4 or 5 wk after transplanting and marketable yield was similar to that of the weed-free check in 2017 and 2018.

In Alaska Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) lands, succession of fields planted with grass and clover to shrubs and small trees is resulting in program compliance problems related to ease of reconversion to crop lands. Standard practice for slowing this succession is mowing every 2 to 3 yr, which does not kill the woody vegetation. A field study was conducted at three sites over 2 yr to determine if 2,4-D (2.2 kg ae ha−1 2-ethylhexyl ester) or triclopyr (2.2 kg ae ha−1 butoxyethyl ester) applied broadcast or 2,4-D (2.2 kg ae ha−1 2,4-D dimethylamine salt) or triclopyr (1.7 kg ae ha−1 triclopyr triethylamine salt) applied with a Diamond Wet Blade™ mower (DWB) would result in longer shrub control compared to mowing. Mowing was conducted at both 15 and 45 cm above ground level and herbicides were applied with the DWB at three rates. Measurements 2 yr after treatment (YAT) confirmed that both herbicides reduced shrub cover about 50% compared to controls. Reduced rates of the herbicides applied with the DWB did not result in decreased shrub control. Grass cover was negatively correlated with shrub cover. Typically, mower height did not alter treatment effects. Treatments had little impact on forb cover and composition 2 YAT, with the exception of fireweed, which was generally reduced where herbicides were applied. Application of 2,4-D and triclopyr does not decrease the frequency of shrub control in CRP lands in Alaska. Use of 2,4-D and triclopyr with or without mowing resulted in no widespread improvement over the current practice of mowing to 15 cm every 2 to 3 yr.
