Expectations about future motions can influence both perceptual judgements and pursuit eye movements. However, it is not known whether these two effects are due to shared processing, or to separate mechanisms with similar properties. We have addressed this question by providing subjects with prior information about the likely direction of motion in an upcoming random-dot motion display and measuring both the perceptual judgements and pursuit eye movements elicited by the stimulus. We quantified the subjects' responses by computing oculometric curves from their pursuit eye movements and psychometric curves from their perceptual decisions. Our results show that directional cues caused similar shifts in both the oculometric and psychometric curves toward the expected motion direction, with little change in the shapes of the curves. Prior information therefore biased the outcome of both eye movement and perceptual decisions without systematically changing their thresholds. We also found that eye movement and perceptual decisions tended to be the same on a trial-by-trial basis, at a higher frequency than would be expected by chance. Furthermore, the effects of prior information were evident during pursuit initiation, as well as during pursuit maintenance, indicating that prior information likely influenced the early processing of visual motion. We conclude that, in our experiments, expectations caused similar effects on both pursuit and perception by altering the activity of visual motion detectors that are read out by both the oculomotor and perceptual systems. Applying cognitive factors such as expectations at relatively early stages of visual processing could act to coordinate the metrics of eye movements with perceptual judgements.

Connexin26 (Cx26) is a member of the family of integral membrane proteins that normally form intercellular gap junctional channels. We have used Western blotting, immunofluorescence, immunoelectron microscopy, and single-cell reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction amplification (RT-PCR) to analyze the expression and cellular localization of Cx26 in the carp retina. In the outer plexiform layer, strong clustered Cx26 immunolabeling was concentrated at and restricted to the terminal dendrites of horizontal cells. Single-cell RT-PCR confirmed the expression of Cx26 in carp retinal horizontal cells. 248-bp fragments amplified from cDNAs of four different horizontal cells were cloned and each nucleotide sequence encodes a protein fragment (AA 104-185) with highly significant homology to rat and mouse Cx26. Immunoelectron microscopy revealed that only the invaginating dendrites of horizontal cells in intimate lateral association with the presynaptic ribbon complex were labeled. No labeling was found at the photoreceptor membrane and there was no septalaminar structure, indicative of gap junctions, between photoreceptors and horizontal cells. The focal location of Cx26 at the membrane of the dendritic tips of horizontal cells and the lack of gap junctional morphology suggests that Cx26 might form hemichannels.

Eye fixation–related potential (EFRP) measures electrical brain activity in response to eye fixations. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether the EFRPs vary during consecutive eye fixations while subjects were performing an object identification task. Eye fixations evoked P1 and N1 components at the occipital and parietal recording sites. The latency of P1 component increased during consecutive fixations. The amplitude of P1 increased and the amplitude of N1 decreased during consecutive fixations. The results indicate that EFRPs are modulated during consecutive fixations, suggesting that the current technique may provide a useful tool to study temporal dynamics of visual perception and processes underlying object identification.

Immunohistochemistry for choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) revealed an extensive network of cholinergic fibers in the tectum of amphibians. The distribution of ChAT immunoreactive fibers was not restricted to superficial retinocipient layers, but also included deep tectal layers. The aim of the present study was to investigate the origin of the cholinergic inputs to the tectum of amphibians. For that purpose, application of retrograde tracers in the tectum of the anuran Rana perezi and the urodele Pleurodeles waltl was combined with ChAT immunohistochemistry. Double-labeled cells were found primarily in the nucleus isthmi of both species. The cholinergic isthmotectal projection is bilateral and topographically arranged and all retrogradely labeled cells found in this nucleus were ChAT immunoreactive. Remarkably, abundant cholinergic cells in two tegmental nuclei, the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus (anurans) and the laterodorsal tegmental nucleus (anurans and urodeles), were demonstrated to provide additional cholinergic innervation to the tectum. We compare the present results with previously reported studies in amphibians and other vertebrates, and discuss the possible functional significance of the cholinergic innervation of the amphibian tectum.

The melanopsin positive, intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) of the inner retina have been shown to send wide-ranging projections throughout the brain. To investigate the response of this important cell type during retinal dystrophy, we use the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) dystrophic rat, a major model of retinal degeneration. We find that ipRGCs exhibit a distinctive molecular profile that remains unaltered during early stages of outer retinal pathology (15 weeks of age). In particular, these cells express βIII tubulin, α-acetylated tubulin, and microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs), while remaining negative for other RGC markers such as neurofilaments, calretinin, and parvalbumin. By 14 months of age, melanopsin positive fibers invade ectopic locations in the dystrophic retina and ipRGC axons/dendrites become distorted (a process that may involve vascular remodeling). The morphological abnormalities in melanopsin processes are associated with elevated immunoreactivity for MAP1b and a reduction in α-acetylated tubulin. Quantification of ipRGCs in whole mounts reveals reduced melanopsin cell number with increasing age. Focusing on the retinal periphery, we find a significant decline in melanopsin cell density contrasted by a stability of melanopsin positive processes. In addition to these findings, we describe for the first time, a distinct plexus of melanopsin processes in the far peripheral retina, a structure that is coincident with a short wavelength opsin cone-enriched rim. We conclude that some ipRGCs are lost in RCS dystrophic rats as the disease progresses and that this loss may involve vascular remodeling. However, a significant number of melanopsin positive cells survive into advanced stages of retinal degeneration and show indications of remodeling in response to pathology. Our findings underline the importance of early intervention in human retinal disease in order to preserve integrity of the inner retinal photoreceptive network.

We investigated a putative local angiotensin II (AngII) system in the rabbit retina by examining AngII contents in the retina, vitreous humor, and choroid by radioimmunoassays and AngII synthesis in the retina and choroid by detection of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) mRNA. An antibody directed against AngII was used to localize possible cellular sources of AngII in the retina. To enhance immunoreactivity and to further examine AngII metabolism, tissues were preincubated in medium containing either protease inhibitors (PI), PI together with the AngII-precursor AngI, or PI and AngII. In some experiments the conversion of AngI to AngII was blocked by an ACE inhibitor. AngII concentration in the vitreous humor was only about 10% of the plasma concentration; in the retina and the choroid, however, AngII concentrations were 10 and 86 times higher, respectively, than in the plasma. ACE mRNA was present in both retina and choroid. Immunohistochemistry for AngII revealed faintly labeled amacrine cells at the inner border of the inner nuclear layer of the retina. Preincubation with PI resulted in an enhanced immunoreaction and in the labeling of fibers in the inner and outer plexiform layer; Müller cells and their processes as well as ganglion cells were now stained as well but the specificity of ganglion cell staining remains questionable. The immunoreaction was further enhanced when AngI or AngII was added to the incubation medium, whereas labeling totally disappeared when the conversion of AngI to AngII was blocked. No immunoreactive cells were detected in the choroid. In conclusion, the synthesizing enzyme for AngII is expressed in the retina and a specific AngII concentration is maintained there; AngII is localized in distinct cell types and can be metabolized within these cells. These data point to a local retinal AngII system that is protected and independent of blood-borne AngII.

We tested the hypothesis that histamine is the transmitter released by barnacle photoreceptors. Median and lateral ocelli were incubated with 3H-histidine and found to synthesize 3H-histamine, identified by high-voltage electrophoresis. Synthesis could be blocked by the histidine decarboxylase inhibitor (S)-α-fluoromethylhistidine. Histamine was applied to 1-cells either by superfusion or by pressure ejection from a pipette (100 µM or 1 mM histamine) positioned close to the I-cell's soma. When bath-applied at concentrations ranging from 5–100 µM, histamine hyperpolarized the I-cell in a dose-dependent fashion and increased its conductance. At 100 µM, histamine abolished the I-cell's response to light. The response to a pulse of pressure-applied histamine was a hyperpolarization whose amplitude was graded with dose (determined by the duration of the pulse). This response persisted in concentrations of Co2+ and Cd2+ that blocked synaptic transmission from the photoreceptors. Cimetidine, an antagonist of mammalian H2 receptors, markedly decreased the cell's responses both to HA and to light at 100 µM and blocked both responses at 1 mM. Pyrilamine and triprolidine, H1 antagonists, had a complex effect on the I-cell's responses to histamine and to light. Neither H1 nor H2 antagonists, nor histamine itself, affected the voltage or light responses recorded in the presynaptic terminal region, or any phase of calcium-dependent action potentials induced in the terminal in the presence of tetraethylammonium ion. Thus, biochemical, immunocytochemical, and physiological evidence suggests that HA is the transmitter from these photoreceptors to the I-cells. Although gammaaminobutyric acid (GABA) is also present in the photoreceptors, it did not affect the I-cell's responses to light or to histamine when bath-applied at 100 µM. Thus, GABA does not appear to modulate transmission from the photoreceptor to the I-cell.

Many psychophysical studies of various visual tasks show that performance is generally better for binocular than for monocular observation. To investigate the physiological basis of this binocular advantage, we have recorded, under monocular and binocular stimulation, contrast response functions for single cells in the striate cortex of anesthetized and paralyzed cats. We applied receiver operating characteristic analysis to our data to obtain monocular and binocular neurometric functions for each cell. A contrast threshold and a slope were extracted from each neurometric function and were compared for monocular and binocular stimulation. We found that contrast thresholds and slopes varied from cell to cell but, in general, binocular contrast thresholds were lower, and binocular slopes were steeper, than their monocular counterparts. The binocular advantage ratio, the ratio of monocular to binocular thresholds for individual cells, was, on average, slightly higher than the typical ratios reported in human psychophysics. No single rule appeared to account for the various degrees of binocular summation seen in individual cells. We also found that the proportion of cells likely to contribute to contrast detection increased with stimulus contrast. Less contrast was required under binocular than under monocular stimulation to obtain the same proportion of cells that contribute to contrast detection. Based on these results, we suggest that behavioral contrast detection is carried out by a small proportion of cells that are relatively sensitive to near-threshold contrasts. Contrast sensitivity functions (CSFs) for the cell population, estimated from this hypothesis, agree well with behavioral data in both the shape of the CSF and the ratio of binocular to monocular sensitivities. We conclude that binocular summation in behavioral contrast detection may be attributed to the binocular superiority in contrast sensitivity of a small proportion of cells which are responsible for threshold contrast detection.

The distribution of ganglion cells and displaced amacrine cells was determined in whole-mounted Aotus retinae. In contrast to diurnal simians, Aotus has only a rudimentary fovea. Ganglion cell density decreases towards the periphery at approximately the same rate along all meridians, but is 1.2–1.8 times higher in the nasal periphery when compared to temporal region at the same eccentricities. The total number of ganglion cells varied from 421,500 to 508,700. Ganglion cell density peaked at 15,000/mm2 at 0.25 mm dorsal to the fovea. The displaced amacrine cells have a shallow density gradient, their peak density in the central region is about 1500–2000/mm2 and their total number varied from 315,900 to 482,800. Comparison between ganglion cell density and areal cortical magnification factor for the primary visual cortex, area 17, shows that there is not a simple proportional representation of the ganglion cell distribution. There is an overrepresentation of the central 10 deg of the visual field in the visual cortex. The present results for Aotus and the results of a similar analysis of data from other primates indicate that the overrepresentation of the central visual field is a general feature of the visual system of primates.

In mammals, cone photoreceptor subtypes are thought to establish topographies that reflect the species-relevant properties of the visual environment. Middle- to long-wavelength-sensitive (M) cones are the dominant population and in most species they form an area centralis at the visual axis. Short-wavelength-sensitive (S) cone topographies do not always match this pattern. We here correlate the interrelationship of S and M cone topographies in representatives of several mammalian orders with different visual ecology, including man, cheetah, cat, Eurasian lynx, African lion, wild hog, roe deer, and red deer. Retinas were labeled with opsin antisera and S and M cone distributions as well as S/M cone ratios were mapped. We find that species inhabiting open environments show M cone horizontal streaks (cheetah, pig, deer). Species living in structured habitats (tiger, lynx, red deer) have increased S cone densities along the retinal margin. In species with active vision (cheetah, bear, tiger, man), S cone distributions are more likely to follow the centripetal M cone gradients. Small species show a ventral bias of peak S cone density which either matches the peak of M cone density in a temporal area centralis (diurnal sciurid rodents, tree shrews) or not (cat, manul, roe deer).

Thus, in addition to habitat structure, physical size and specific lifestyle patterns (e.g. food acquisition) appear to underlie the independent variations of M and S cone topographies.

Retinal neurotransmitters are known to play a role in postnatal ocular development and eye growth. The success of muscarinic antagonists in blocking form-deprivation myopia has implicated retinal acetylcholine in the control of ocular growth. The present study investigated whether steady-state content of acetylcholine (ACh) and its metabolite choline (Ch) are altered in the retina of eyes developing axial myopia, in both tree shrews and chicks. Retinal ACh and Ch content were measured using reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Posterior and anterior retinal samples were analyzed from myopic (form deprived) and control eyes as well as age-matched normal eyes. Normative data on retinal neurotransmitter content demonstrated that chick retinas contained less than half the ACh and Ch neurotransmitter content of tree shrews when normalized to retinal protein (ACh: 61 ± 3 vs. 130 ± 6 ng, Ch: 131 ± 5 vs. 347 ± 25 ng). There was no significant difference in either ACh or Ch content between myopic and contralateral control eyes in either tree shrews or chicks, irrespective of the degree of myopia. This finding was consistent for both posterior, anterior, and consequently whole retinal samples. In contrast, dopamine and DOPAC contents were found to be reduced in myopic compared to control eyes of the same tree shrews (dopamine −6.9% and DOPAC −15.5%) and chicks (dopamine −12.3% and DOPAC −28.2%). These findings demonstrate that, contrary to dopamine and DOPAC content, steady-state retinal acetylcholine and choline content is not significantly altered during myopia development.

The visual pigment rhodopsin (rh1) constitutes the first step in the sensory transduction cascade in the rod photoreceptors of the vertebrate eye, forming the basis of vision at low light levels. In most vertebrates, rhodopsin is a single-copy gene whose function in rod photoreceptors is highly conserved. We found evidence for a second rhodopsin-like gene (rh1-2) in the zebrafish genome. This novel gene was not the product of a zebrafish-specific gene duplication event and contains a number of unique amino acid substitutions. Despite these differences, expression of rh1-2in vitro yielded a protein that not only bound chromophore, producing an absorption spectrum in the visible range (λmax ≈ 500 nm), but also activated in response to light. Unlike rh1, rh1-2 is not expressed during the first 4 days of embryonic development; it is expressed in the retina of adult fish but not the brain or muscle. Similar rh1-2 sequences were found in two other Danio species, as well as a more distantly related cyprinid, Epalzeorhynchos bicolor. While sequences were only identified in cyprinid fish, phylogenetic analyses suggest an older origin for this gene family. Our study suggests that rh1-2 is a functional opsin gene that is expressed in the retina later in development. The discovery of a new previously uncharacterized opsin gene in zebrafish retina is surprising given its status as a model system for studies of vertebrate vision and visual development.

In the retina, nitric oxide (NO) functions in network coupling, light adaptation, neurotransmitter receptor function, and synaptic release. Neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) is present in the retina of every vertebrate species investigated. However, although nNOS can be found in every retinal cell type, little is known about the production of NO in specific cells or about the diffusion of NO within the retina. We used diaminofluorescein-2 (DAF-2) to image real-time NO production in turtle retina in response to stimulation with N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA). In response to NMDA, NO was produced in somata in the ganglion cell and inner nuclear layers, in synaptic boutons and processes in the inner plexiform layer, in processes in the outer plexiform layer, and in photoreceptor inner segments. This NO-dependent fluorescence production quickly reached transient peaks and declined more slowly toward baseline levels at different rates in different cells. In some cases, the NO signal was primarily confined to within 10 μm of the source, which suggests that NO may not diffuse freely through the retina. Such limited spread was not predicted and suggests that NO signal transduction may be more selective than suggested, and that NO may play significant intracellular roles in cells that produce it. Because NO-dependent fluorescence within amacrine cells can be confined to the soma, specific dendritic sites, or both with distinct kinetics, NO may function at specific synapses, modulate gene expression, or coordinate events throughout the cell.

Alpha 2 adrenergic agonists are used for controlling intraocular pressure (IOP) in the treatment of glaucoma. They have also been shown to be neuroprotective to retinal cells in a variety of injury models. Despite this significance, the localization of the three known alpha 2 adrenergic receptors has not been unequivocally established. The aim of this study was to determine the location of the three alpha 2 adrenergic receptors in ocular tissues using immunohistochemical techniques. New antibodies were generated and their specificity was determined using Western blotting and preadsorption. In the anterior segment of the eye alpha 2A immunoreactivity was located in the nonpigmented ciliary epithelium, corneal, and conjunctival epithelia. Alpha 2B staining was not apparent in these tissues. Alpha 2C immunostaining was present in the membrane of pigmented ciliary epithelium and corneal and conjunctival epithelial cells. In the rat retina, all three receptor subtypes were present but were differentially localized. Alpha 2A was present in the somata of ganglion cell layer and inner nuclear layer somas, alpha 2B was located in the dendrites and axons of most of the neurons as well as glia, while alpha 2C was present in the somata and inner segment of the photoreceptors. In human and monkey retinas, similar pattern of labeling for alpha 2A and 2B receptors were observed, while alpha 2B was additionally present in the membranes of many cell somata in addition to dendrites and axons. Alpha 2C labeling was much weaker but exhibited similar pattern to that observed in the rat. These data provide additional information on the location of the alpha 2 receptors in the anterior portion of the eye and present new information on their specific location in the retina. This offers insights into possible targets for adrenergic agonists in a therapeutic context.

The ability of freely-flying honeybees to track moving targets was examined by training to collect a reward on a target, and then videotaping their approach to the target while it was in motion. Training experiments were carried out with several groups of bees, using various colors for the target and the background. Computer-aided frame-by-frame analysis of video recordings was used to plot the instantaneous positions of the target, as well as the position and orientation of the approaching bee in three dimensions. The results show that bees are perfectly capable of tracking moving targets and landing on them. When the distance of the target is greater than 15 cm, approaching bees correct for angular deviations of the target from the midline, both in the horizontal and in the vertical plane. In either plane, the input vaariables that are important to the tracking system seem to be (1) the angular bearing of the target with respect and (2) the angular velocity of the target with respect to the eye. The tracking control system tends to orient the bee such that the target is located frontally, at an angle of Ca. 35 deg below the bee's long axis. The chromatic properties of tracking behavior were investigated by employing combinations of colors for the target and background such that the boundary between the target and the background presented a contrast that was visible either only to the green-sensitive receptors of the bee's eye, or only to theblue-sensitive receptors. The results of these experiments suggest that, in controlling tracking, the measurement of the angular velocity of the target is derived almost exclusively from signals from the green-sensitive receptors, as is the case with previously studied movement-sensitive behavior. However, the measurement of the angular bearing of the target is derived from the blue-sensitive receptors as well as the green-sensitive noes. When the target is closer than Ca. 15 cm, approaching bees use translational maneuvers, in addition to rotational ones, to track the moving target. Translational target tracking appears to be driven primarily by signals from the green-sensitive receptors.

We investigated the attributes of transduction and light-adaptation in rods, single cones, and twin cones isolated from the retina of striped bass (Morone saxatilis). Outer-segment membrane currents were measured with suction electrodes under voltage clamp provided by tight-seal electrodes applied to the cell’s inner segment. Brief flashes of light transiently reduced the outer-segment current with kinetics and sensitivity characteristic of each receptor type. In all cells, the responses to dim lights increased linearly with light intensity. The amplitude-intensity relation for rods and single cones were well described by an exponential saturation function, while for twin cones it was best described by a Michaelis-Menten function. At the wavelength of maximum absorbance, the average intensity necessary to half-saturate the peak photocurrent in dark-adapted rods was 28 photons/μm2 and in single cones it was 238 photons/μm2. Among twin cones, the common type (88% of all twins recorded) half-saturated at an average of 1454 photons/μm2, while the fast type reached half-saturation at an average of 9402 photons/μm2. The action spectrum of the photocurrent in the three receptor types was well fit by a nomogram that describes the absorption spectrum of a vitamin A2-based photopigment. The wavelength of maximum absorbance for rods was 528 nm, for single cones it was 542 nm and for twin cones it was 605 nm. Both members of the twin pair contained the same photopigment and they were electrically coupled. Under voltage clamp, the response to dim flashes of light in both single and twin cones was biphasic. The initial peak was followed by a smaller amplitude undershoot. Single cones reached peak in 86 ms and common twins in 50 ms. Background light desensitized the flash sensitivity in all photoreceptor types, but was most effective in rods and least effective in fast twins. In the steady state, the desensitizing effect of a background intensity, Ib, at the respective optimum wavelength for each cell was well described by the Weber-Fechner law (1/(1 + Ib/Ibo)), where Ibo was, on average (in units of photons/μm2/s), 1.45 for rods, 1.81 x 103 for single cones, 4.56 x 103 for common twins, and 6.79 x 104 for fast twins.

Measurements were made of the optimal velocity for drifting bar-shaped stimuli to excite striate cortex neurons of the cat. These data were compared to the optimal spatial and temporal frequencies of the same neurons, as determined with drifting sine-wave grating stimuli. A systematic relationship was revealed, whereby those neurons preferring higher velocities of bar motion also preferred lower spatial and higher temporal frequencies of gratings. The optimal bar velocity for a given neuron could be quantitatively predicted from the ratio of that neuron's optimal temporal frequency to its optimal spatial frequency.

Vertical slices of 6-day postnatal (P6) rat retina were cut at a thickness of 100 μm and cultured using the roller-tube technique. After 14–21 days in vitro there was significant distortion of normal retinal architecture, but localized areas of the slices showed the typical pattern of layering of mature retina. The following immunocytochemical markers were used to characterize the different retinal cell types: antibodies against protein kinase C (PKC), calcium binding protein (CabP 28kD), neurofilaments (NF), glia-specific antibodies (GFAP, vimentin), and transmitter-specific antibodies (GABA, TH). The expression of these markers was compared in P6 retina, adult retina, and slice culture. To further characterize the cultured cells, patch-clamp recordings were performed in combination with intracellular injection of Lucifer Yellow (LY). Transmitter-and voltage-gated membrane currents were recorded from morphologically identified neurons. The experiments show that a mammalian slice culture can be used to study differentiation and function of retinal cell types.

We analyzed the immunohistochemical distribution of the two calcium-binding proteins, parvalbumin (PV) and calbindin D-28k (CB), in the primary visual cortex and lateral dorsal geniculate nucleus (dLGN) of monocularly enucleated macaque monkeys (Macaca fascicularis and Macaca nemestrind) in order to determine how the expression of PV and CB is affected by functional inactivity. The monkeys survived 1–17 weeks after monocular enucleation. The distribution pattern of each of the proteins was examined immunocytochemically using monoclonal antibodies and compared with that of the metabolic marker cytochrome oxidase (CO). We recorded manually the number of immunostained neurons and estimated the concentration of immunoreactive staining product using a computerized image-acquisition system. Our results indicate a decrease of approximately 30% in the labeling of PV-immunoreactive (ir) neuropil particularly in those layers of denervated ocular-dominance columns receiving the geniculocortical input. There was no change in the number of PV-ir neurons in any compartment irrespective of the enucleation interval. For CB-ir, we found a 20% decrease in the neuropil labeling in layer 2/3 of the denervated ocular-dominance columns. In addition, a subset of pyramidal CB-ir neurons in layers 2 and 4B, which are weakly stained in control animals, showed decreased labeling. In the dLGN of enucleated animals, PV-ir and CB-ir were decreased only in the neuropil of the denervated layers.

From these results, we conclude that cortical interneurons and geniculate projection neurons still express PV and CB in their cell bodies after disruption of the direct functional input from one eye. The only distinct decrease of PV and CB expression is seen in axon terminals from retinal ganglion cells in the dLGN, and in the axons and terminals of both geniculocortical projection cells and cortical interneurons in the cerebral cortex.

In the arthropod medulla, which is the second ganglion on the afferent visual pathway, a column of about 40 cells represents each point in space (i.e. compound eye facet). Some stages of visual processing underlying the responses of one class of cells in the locust medulla have been identified. These transient cells give very similar responses to intensity increments and decrements, and also to pulses and steps; there is no spontaneous activity and a stimulus causes one or two spikes to fire at fixed latencies. Movement, however, produces a prolonged spike discharge by successive excitation of subunits within the receptive field.

One of the main features of the transient cells' responses is a self-inhibition which attenuates responses to successive stimuli at one point. This inhibition is restricted to the outputs of single receptor (rhabdom), it decays after about 100 ms, and is polarity sensitive so that stimuli of one polarity (e.g. dimming) do not inhibit responses to stimuli of the opposite polarity (e.g. brightening). The inhibition effectively alters the contrast threshold of the cells, because after adaptation with stimuli of one contrast, a modest (<20%) increase in contrast is sufficient to elicit an unadapted response. Transient cells are not directionally selective and there are no local spatio-temporal interactions of the kind necessary for directional selectivity. But, by analogy with the directional veto in directionally selective cells in the rabbit retina (Barlow & Levick, 1965), self-inhibition is suggested as a mechanism of non-directional motion detection. After the inhibition, there is some spatial pooling of signals which is followed by rectification. The transient cells' spiking outputs could abstract a refined subset of visual information which may encode the presence, but not the direction, amplitude, or polarity of moving object borders.
