The generation of compensatory eye movements in response to rotational head movements involves the transformation of visual-optokinetic and vestibular signals into commands controlling the appropriate eye muscles. Previously, it has been shown that the three systems (optokinetic, vestibular, and eye muscle) share a similar three-dimensional reference frame. In this report, we suggest that a peculiarity in the structure of the horizontal recti in pigeons demonstrates that the optokinetic system is organized with respect to the eye muscles rather than the vestibular canals. Measurements of the orientation of the plane for each of the lateral and medial recti were obtained. These were compared with the direction preferences of optokinetic neurons responsive to horizontal motion, namely “back” units in the nucleus of the basal optic root (nBOR), “forward” units in the pretectal nucleus lentiformis mesencephali (LM), and “vertical axis” (VA) Purkinje cells in the flocculus. The average direction preference of LM neurons excited in response to forward (temporal to nasal) visual motion, and VA Purkinje cells in response to optokinetic motion in the ipsilateral visual field was approximately parallel to the visual horizontal. This corresponded to the orientation of the medial rectus, which was also approximately parallel to the visual horizontal. The average direction preference of nBOR neurons excited in response to backward (nasal to temporal) visual motion, and VA Purkinje cells in response to optokinetic motion in the contralateral visual field was approximately 20–30 deg down from the visual horizontal. The orientation of the lateral rectus was also approximately 20–30 deg down from the visual horizontal. These data suggest that the incoming optokinetic signals are organized with respect to the outgoing extraocular muscle commands.

The activity of parietal cortex neurones primarily related to eye position (EP neurones) was studied in macaque monkeys with the aim of precisely defining the neurones' gaze fields (GF) and comparing them in two functionally different areas, MSTd and 7a. Discharge rates of single neurones in the inferior parietal lobule and in the underlying cortex of the superior temporal sulcus were recorded in two Java monkeys while the animals fixated a steady visual target positioned at several different points on a video screen. The GFs were then drawn as a regression surface fitting the mean discharge rates. Cells tonically influenced by the angle of gaze were found in both areas. The GFs most often took the form of a nearly planar surface best characterized as a ramp tilted towards a hemifield or quadrant of the visual field, shifted eccentrically with respect to the straight ahead (primary position), and with a midpoint centred between 0 deg and 20 deg of gaze eccentricity and saturation between 10 deg and 35 deg. In a minority of cases, the discharge rate was nearly maximal at the primary position and decreased to a minimum within 35 deg of eccentricity. In other instances, the GFs were peaked surfaces, limited to a restricted part of visual space. EP neurones, while showing similar gaze fields in areas MST and 7a, were found intermingled with functionally different types of cells. The results suggest that EP neurones similar to those already described in several areas of the monkey parietal cortex are present also in area MST. These cells, by signalling the degree of gaze eccentricity from the primary position, encode gaze position in an orbito-centered frame extending up to 30–35 deg from the straight-ahead. The role of EP neurones might be to supply contiguous elements with a gaze eccentricity signal required for visuo-motor processes such as the control of tracking movements.

Previous work has shown that small, stimulus-dependent changes in light absorption can be used to monitor cortical activity, and to provide detailed maps of ocular dominance and optimal stimulus orientation in the striate cortex of adult macaque monkeys (Blasdel & Salama, 1986; Ts'o et al., 1990). We now extend this approach to infant animals, in which we find many of the organizational features described previously in adults, including patch-like linear zones, singularities, and fractures (Blasdel, 1992b), in animals as young as 3/12 weeks of age. Indeed, the similarities between infant and adult patterns are more compelling than expected. Patterns of ocular dominance and orientation, for example, show many of the correlations described previously in adults, including a tendency for orientation specificity to decrease in the centers of ocular dominance columns, and for iso-orientation contours to cross the borders of ocular dominance columns at angles of 90 deg. In spite of these similarities, there are differences, one of which entails the strength of ocular dominance signals, which appear weaker in the younger animals and which increase steadily with age. Another, more striking, difference concerns the widths of ocular dominance columns, which increase by 20% during the first 3 months of life. Since the cortical surface area increases by a comparable amount, during the same time, this 20% expansion implies that growth occurs anisotropically, perpendicular to the ocular dominance columns, as the cortical surface expands. Since the observed patterns of orientation preference expand more slowly, at approximately half this rate, these results also imply that ocular dominance and orientation patterns change their relationship, and may even drift past one another, as young animals mature.

The distribution of neurons and fibers immunoreactive (ir) to the three calcium-binding proteins parvalbumin (PV), calbindin D-28k (CB), and calretinin (CR) was studied in the human lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), lateral inferior pulvinar, and optic radiation, and related to that in the visual cortex. In the LGN, PV, CR, and CB immunoreactivity was present in all laminae, slightly stronger in the magnocellular than in the parvocellular laminae for CB and CR. PV-ir puncta, representing transversally cut axons, and CR-ir fibers were revealed within the laminae and interlaminar zones, and just beyond the outer border of lamina 6 in the geniculate capsule. In the optic radiation both PV- and CR-immunoreactive neurons, puncta, and fibers were present. CB immunoreactivity was revealed in neurons of all laminae of the lateral geniculate nucleus, including S lamina and interlaminar zones. There were hardly any CB-ir puncta or fibers in the laminae, interlaminar zones, geniculate capsule, or optic radiation. In the lateral inferior pulvinar, immunoreactive neurons for the three calcium-binding proteins were present in smaller number than in the LGN, as well as PV-ir puncta and CR-ir fibers within the nucleus and in the pulvinar capsule. In the white matter underlying area 17, fibers intermingled with a few scattered neurons were stained for both PV and CR, but very rarely for CB. These fibers stopped at the limit between areas 17 and 18. Area 17 showed a dense plexus of PV-ir puncta and neurons in the thalamo-receptive layer IV and CR-ir puncta and neurons both in the superficial layers I-II, IIIC, and in layer VA. Cajal-Retzius CR-ir neurons were present in layer I. CB-ir puncta were almost confined to layer I-III and CB-ir neurons to layer II. Finally the superior colliculus exhibited mostly populations of PV and CR pyramidal-like immunoreactive neurons, mainly in the intermediate tier. These data suggest that in the visual thalamus most calcium-binding protein immunoreactive neurons project to the visual cortex, while in the superior colliculus a smaller immunoreactive population represent projection neurons.

Most molecular studies on the visual system in fish have been performed on freshwater teleosts such as goldfish and zebrafish where cones and rods appear simultaneously. Many marine fishes have long larval phase in the upper pelagic zone before transformation into a juvenile and a benthic life style. The retina at the larval stages consists of only single cone cells; later during metamorphosis double cones and rods develop. The flatfish Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) is a typical example of a marine species with such a two-step retina development. In this study, we have cloned five different opsins from Atlantic halibut larvae and juvenile retinas. Sequence comparisons with other opsins and phylogenetic analysis show that the five genes belong to the opsins of long-wavelength sensitive (L); middle-wavelength sensitive, MCone and MRod; and short-wavelength sensitive, SBlue and SUltraviolet, respectively. In situ hybridization analysis reveals expression in double cone (L and MCone), single cone (SBlue and SUltraviolet), and rod (MRod) types of photoreceptor cells in juvenile halibut retina. The visual system in Atlantic halibut seems therefore to have all four types of cone photoreceptors in addition to rod photoreceptors. This work shows for the first time molecular isolation of a complete set of retinal visual pigment genes from a marine teleost and describes the first cloning of an ultraviolet-sensitive opsin type from a marine teleost.

The goal of this study was to determine whether the jellyfish green fluorescent protein (GFP) could be used in transgenic mice to label and purify cone photoreceptors from the living retina. We created a transgene containing the 5′ regulatory sequence of the human red pigment gene (pR6.5 lacZ clone; kindly provided by J. Nathans & Y. Wang), fused to the GFP coding sequence. This transgene was used to generate seven lines of PCR-positive founders. Three of the lines had bright green fluorescent cone photoreceptors. The GFP fills the entire cell. Two mouse lines had only a few (∼10–100) fluorescent cells per retina, and one line (R6.85933) had many thousands. In the latter, double labeling of the cones with RITC-conjugated peanut agglutinin reveals that in the ventral retina a small proportion of the cones express GFP, while in the dorsal retina the majority do. Cells dissociated from the retinae of line R6.85933 continue to fluoresce and can be readily detected and enriched with flow cytometry. The signal provides a log unit of separation between the fluorescent cone soma and the remaining retinal cells. Roughly 3% of the cells are this fluorescent, and it is possible to purify up to 30,000 cells from one mouse. RT-PCR analysis of the mRNA from these isolated cells detects both the middle and short wavelength opsins with little if any contamination from rhodopsin.

Based on cytoarchitectonic criteria, the primate pulvinar nucleus has been subdivided into medial (PM), lateral (PL), and inferior (PI) regions. However, these subdivisions show no correlation with those established by electrophysiological, immunocytochemical, or neuroanatomical tracer studies. In this work, we studied the connections of the pulvinar nucleus of Cebus monkey with visual areas V1, V2, V4, MT, and PO by means of retrograde fluorescent tracers injected into these areas. Based on the projection zones to cortical visual areas, the visual portion of the pulvinar of Cebus monkey was subdivided into three subregions: P1, P2, and P3, similar to those described in the macaque (Ungerleider et al., 1984). In Cebus, P1 includes the centrolateral portion of traditionally defined PI and adjacent portion of PL. P2 is located in the dorsal portion of PL and P3 includes the medial portion of PI and extends dorsally into adjacent PL and PM. In addition, we studied the histology of the pulvinar using multiple criteria, such as cytoarchitecture and myeloarchitecture; histochemistry for cytochrome oxidase, NADPH-diaphorase, and acetylcholinesterase; and immunocytochemistry for two calcium-binding proteins, calbindin and parvalbumin, and for a neurofilament recognized by the SMI-32 antibody. Some of these stains, mainly calbindin, showed additional subdivisions of the Cebus pulvinar, beyond the traditional PI, PL, and PM. Based on this immunohistochemical staining, the border of PI is moved dorsally above the brachium of the superior colliculus and PI can be subdivided in five regions (PIP, PIM, PIC, PIL, and PILS). Regions P1, P2, and P3 defined based on efferent connections with cortical visual areas are not architectonically/neurochemically homogeneous. Rather they appear to consist of further chemoarchitectonic subdivisions. These distinct histochemical regions might be related to different functional modules of visual processing within one connectional area.

There are marked similarities in the adaptation to motion observed in wide-field directional neurons found in the mammalian nucleus of the optic tract and cells in the insect lobula plate. However, while the form and time scale of adaptation is comparable in the two systems, there is a difference in the directional properties of the effect. A model based on the Reichardt detector is proposed to describe adaptation in mammals and insects, with only minor modifications required to account for the differences in directionality. Temporal-frequency response functions of the neurons and the model are shifted laterally and compressed by motion adaptation. The lateral shift enhances dynamic range and differential motion sensitivity. The compression is not caused by fatigue, but is an intrinsic property of the adaptive process resulting from interdependence of temporal-frequency tuning and gain in the temporal filters of the motion detectors.

In the fish retina, retinomotor movement, spinule formation, and alteration of connexon density within gap junctions occur in response to changes in ambient light conditions. All of these morphological parameters can also be influenced by the application of dopamine. This study examines whether the morphological alterations of these structures are correlated with the activity of endogenous dopamine during an entrained 12-h light/12-h dark cycle and after 1-h sort-term adaptation periods.

The two measured parameters of retinomotor movement, cone inner segment length and pigment dispersion, were well-correlated with endogenous cyclic dopamine activity. However, retinomotor movement was initiated already at the end of the entrained dark period, before the onset of light and before the onset of dopamine turnover. Furthermore, a 1-h dark-adaptation period in the middle of the light phase reduced dopamine activity but did not affect retinomotor movement. At the switch from light to dark and after a 1-h light period at midnight retinomotor movement correlated exactly with dopamine turnover and illumination conditions. The formation of spinules was correlated with dopaminergic activity during all phases of the light/dark cycle and during short-term adaptation periods. Spinules were expressed in the light when dopamine activity was high and they were retracted when dopamine activity was reduced during darkness. Connexon density of horizontal cell gap junctions showed a weaker correlation with the endogenous dopamine turnover. In this case, a high activity of endogenous dopamine was paralleled by a high density of connexons.

Our results suggest that endogenous dopamine is involved in the cyclic regulation of the observed morphological alterations and that dopamine is part of the light signal for these mechanisms.

We propose a network model that accounts for the kinetic depth in structure from motion phenomena. Using plausible neural mechanisms, the model accounts for (1) fluctuations in perception when viewing a simple kinetic depth stimulus, (2) disambiguation of this stimulus with stereoscopic information, and (3) subsequent bias of the percept of this stimulus following stereoscopic adaptation. The model comprises two levels: a layer of monocular directionally selective motion detectors that provide input to a second layer of disparity- selective and direction-selective binocular mechanisms. The network of facilitatory and inhibitory connections between binocular mechanisms gives rise to fluctuations in network activity that mimic the fluctuations in perception of kinetic depth in the absence of disparity information. The results of a psychophysical experiment are consistent with the nature of the proposed interactions.

Observation of the spread of biotinylated or fluorescent tracers following injection into a single cell has become one of the most common methods of demonstrating the presence of gap junctions. Nevertheless, many of the fundamental features of tracer movement through gap junctions are still poorly understood. These include the relative roles of diffusion and iontophoretic current, and under what conditions the size of the stained mosaic will increase, asymptote, or decline. Additionally, the effect of variations in amount of tracer introduced, as produced by variation in electrode resistance following cell penetration, is not obvious. To examine these questions, Neurobiotin was microinjected into the two types of horizontal cell of the rabbit retina and visualized with streptavidin-Cy3. Images were digitally captured using a confocal microscope. The spatial distribution of Neurobiotin across the patches of coupled cells was measured. Adequate fits to the data were obtained by fitting to a model with terms for diffusion and amount of tracer injected. Results indicated that passive diffusion is the major source of tracer movement through gap junctions, whereas iontophoretic current played no role over the range tested. Fluorescent visualization, although slightly less sensitive than peroxidase reactions, produced staining intensities with a more useful dynamic range. The rate constants for movement of Neurobiotin between A-type horizontal cells was about ten times greater than that for B-type horizontal cells. Although direct extrapolation to ion conductances cannot be assumed, tracer movement can be used to give an estimate of relative coupling rates across cell types, retinal location, or modulation conditions in intact tissue.

Visual information is processed in a series of subsequent steps. The performance of each of these steps depends not only on the computations it performs itself but also on the representation of the visual surround on which it operates. Here we investigate the consequences of signal preprocessing for the performance of the motion-detection system of the fly. In particular, we analyze whether the retinal input signals are rectified and segregate into separate ON and OFF channels, which then feed independent parallel motion-detection pathways. We recorded the activity of an identified directionally selective interneuron (HI-cell) in response to apparent motion stimuli, i.e. sequential brightness changes at two neighboring locations in the visual field, as well as to brightness changes at only a single location. For apparent motion stimuli, the motion-dependent response component was determined by subtracting from the overall response the responses to the individual stimulus components when presented alone. The following conclusions could be derived: (1) Apparent motion consisting of a sequence of increased or decreased brightness at two locations in the visual field have the same optimum interstimulus time interval (Fig. 3). (2) Sequences of brightness steps of like polarity (either increments or decrements) elicit positive and negative motion-dependent response components when mimicking motion in the cell's preferred and null direction, respectively. The motion-dependent response components are inverted in sign when the brightness steps of a stimulus sequence have a different polarity (Fig. 7). (3) The responses to the beginning and the end of a brightness pulse depend on the pulse duration. For pulse durations of less than 2 s, both events interact with each other (Fig. 9). All of these results do not provide any indication that the fly processes motion information in independent ON and OFF motion detectors. Brightness changes of both signs are rather represented at the input of the same movement detectors, and interactions between signals resulting from both brightness increments and decrements take their sign into account. This type of preprocessing of the retinal input is argued to render a motion-detection system particularly robust against noise.

Studies of visual development show that basic metrics of visual development such as spatial resolution develop over the first 6–9 months in monkeys and over the first 6 or so years in humans. However, more complex visual functions may develop over different, or more protracted, time courses. To address the question of whether global perceptual processing is linked to or otherwise dependent on the development of basic spatial vision, we studied the development of contour integration, a global perceptual task, in comparison to that of grating acuity in macaque monkeys. We find that contour integration develops substantially later than acuity. Contour integration begins to develop at 5–6 months, near the time that acuity development is complete and continues to mature well into the second postnatal year. We discuss this later development in terms poor central efficiency and consider the relevant anatomy and physiology of the developing visual system. We conclude that contour integration is not likely to be limited by the same mechanisms that are permissive to acuity development, and may instead reflect the emergence of function central to V1.

Accommodation is more accurate with polychromatic stimuli than with narrowband or monochromatic stimuli. The aim of this paper is to develop a computational model for how the visual system uses the extra information in polychromatic stimuli to increase the accuracy of accommodation responses. The proposed model is developed within the context of both trichromacy and also the organization of spatial and chromatic processing within the visual cortex.

The refractive error present in the retinal image can be estimated by comparing image quality with and without small additional changes in refractive state. In polychromatic light, the chromatic aberration of the eye results in differences in ocular refractive power for light of different wavelengths. As a result, the refractive state of the eye can be estimated by comparing image quality in the three types of cone photoreceptor. The ability of cortical neurons to perform such comparisons on image quality with a crude form of spatial-frequency analysis is examined theoretically. It is found that spatially band-pass chromatically opponent neurons (that may correspond to double opponent neurons) can perform such calculations and that chromatic cues to accommodation are extracted most effectively by neurons responding to spatial frequencies of between 2 and 8 cycles/deg.

Pigeons were trained to discriminate visual stimuli that differed in intensity, color, or pattern, after which lesions were made in the ectostriatum, either the core region (EC), the belt region (EB), or both (EC + EB). Control lesions were made in the lateral neostriatum. After surgery, the birds were again trained to discriminate the stimuli. On the basis of a quantitative analysis of the lesion reconstructions, each pigeon was assigned to one of five groups: EC, EB, moderate (EC + EB), slight (EC + EB), or control. Postoperative savings scores, based on the number of preoperative and postoperative sessions required to discriminate the stimuli, were calculated. An analysis of variance indicated a significant effect of lesion location on the extent of postoperative savings or loss. Only the moderate (EC + EB) group was significantly different from the neostriatum controls. A multiple regression analysis of performance on the individual discrimination tasks indicated that the extent of damage to EC predicted the initial performance deficit on the intensity and one of the two pattern discrimination tasks (vertical versus horizontal bar). The color discrimination deficit, which was modest in extent and of short duration, was predicted only by the damage to (EC + EB) that was at least moderate in extent (20–40% of the volume of (EC + EB)).

To identify ultraviolet (UV) and middle- (M) wavelength-sensitive cone and rod signals in murine retinal ganglion cells, single ganglion cell responses were studied in anesthetized, light-adapted C57/BL6 mice with tungsten microelectrodes driven through the sclera and vitreous to the neural retina. One hundred fifty-four ganglion cells were examined in 43 retinas of 34 mice. The retina was stimulated with diffuse flashes and/or pulses of ultraviolet (360 nm) or green (520 nm) light in the presence and absence of a strong steady orange adapting light. Twelve ganglion cells were studied in the dark-adapted retina in order to identify the signals of rods. Three functionally different types of ganglion cells were found: (1) phasic responding cells (31%) with no spontaneous activity and large impulse amplitudes; (2) tonic responding cells (60%) with irregular, low frequency (5–10 Hz) spontaneous activity and smaller impulse amplitudes; and (3) metronome-like cells (9%) with regular, relatively high-frequency (20–40 Hz) spontaneous activity. A few cells (1%) had habituating responses. Every cell encountered was affected by diffuse stimulation. The more common two types were excited at either the ON or OFF or at both the ON and OFF phases of stimulation. Type III cells had weaker responses, sometimes only inhibited by turning off a light. In the light-adapted state, most cells received signals of the same polarity from UV- and M-cones but UV-cone inputs were usually more dominant, especially in ventral retina. A fraction of cells received signals from only UV- (18%) or only M- (3%) cones. In rare cases (2%) these cone inputs had an opposite polarity on the same cell. In the dark-adapted state, all cells were at least four or five logarithmic units more sensitive and more to green than ultraviolet light. The results indicate that co-expression of both UV-and M-cone opsins cannot be ubiquitous in murine retina. Some cones, especially UV cones, exist without the presence of any functional M-cone opsin. This must be the case to explain the presence of ganglion cells that receive inputs only from UV-cones and others that receive inputs of opposite polarity from UV- and M-cones. The results support the hypothesis that murine retina has the physiological capacity to relay signals to the brain that allow the sensing of chromatic contrast and color vision.

The short wavelength-sensitive (blue) cone bipolar cells was found to have a nonrandom distribution by analyzing the nearest neighbors and by calculating the density recovery profile (DRP). Blue cones had been shown previously to have a nonrandom distribution (Curcio et al., 1991). The relationship between the two arrays was then analyzed by calculating the cross-correlational density recovery profile (cDRP), which indicates the local density of blue cones around each blue cone bipolar cell. Although both cell types appeared to be distributed uniformly at the macroscopic level, the cDRP was 1.7 times higher within 15 μm of each bipolar cell perikaryon than in the surrounding area. The area of higher density was approximately the same as that in which the blue cone bipolar cells made synaptic contacts with blue cones. The finding that the blue cones and the blue cone bipolar cells were closer together than expected suggests that the positions of the perikarya of these neurons were influenced by their synaptic connections or other developmental interactions.

Various residual visual capacities have been reported for the phenomenally blind field of hemispherectomized patients, providing evidence for the relative roles of cortical and subcortical pathways in vision. We attempted to characterize these functions by examining the ability of five patients to detect, localize, and discriminate high-contrast flashed, flickering and moving targets. Dependent measures were verbal, manual, and oculomotor responses. As a control for light scatter, intensity thresholds for monocular detection of targets in the hemianopic field were compared with thresholds obtained when using an additional half eyepatch to occlude the blind hemiretina of the tested eye. One unilaterally destriate patient was tested on the same tasks. In photopic conditions, none of the hemispherectomized patients could respond to visual cues in their impaired fields, whereas the destriate patient could detect, discriminate, and point to targets, and appreciate the apparent motion of stimuli across his midline. Under reduced lighting, the threshold luminance required by hemispherectomized patients to detect stimuli presented monocularly was similar to that required for their detection when all visual information was occluded in the blind field, and only available to the visual system indirectly via light scatter. In contrast, the destriate patient's monocular threshold in his blind field was substantially lower than that for stimuli directly occluded in the blind field. As we found no range of stimuli which the hemispherectomized patients could detect or discriminate that was not also associated with discriminable scattered light, we conclude that the subcortical pathways which survive hemispherectomy cannot mediate voluntary behavioural responses to visual information in the hemianopic field.

Cones in the foveola of adult primate retina are narrower and more elongated than cones on the foveal rim, which in turn, are narrower and more elongated than those located more eccentric. This gradient of cone morphology is directly correlated with cone density and acuity. Here we investigate the hypothesis that fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling mediates the morphological differentiation of foveal cones—in particular, the mechanism regulating the elongation of foveal cones. We used immunoreactivity to FGF receptor (R) 4, and quantitative analysis to study cone elongation on the horizontal meridian of macaque retinae, aged between foetal day (Fd) 95 and 2.5 years postnatal (P 2.5y). We also used in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry to investigate the expression patterns of FGF2 and FGFR1–4 at the developing fovea, and three other sample locations on the horizontal meridian. Labeled RNA was detected using the fluorescent marker “Fast Red” (Roche) and levels of expression in cone inner segments and in the ganglion cell layer (GCL) were compared using confocal microscopy, optical densitometry, and tested for statistical significance. Our results show that morphological differentiation of cones begins near the optic disc around Fd 95, progressing toward the developing fovea up until birth, approximately. Levels of FGF2 and FGFR4 mRNAs expression are low in foveal cones, compared with cones closer to the optic disc, during this period. There is no similar gradient of FGF2 mRNA expression in the ganglion cell layer of the same sections. Maturation of foveal cones is delayed until the postnatal period. The results suggest that a wave of cone differentiation spreads from the disc region toward the developing fovea during the second half of gestation in the macaque. A gradient of expression of FGFR4 and FGF2 associated with the wave of differentiation suggests that FGF signalling mediates cone narrowing and elongation.

The effect of light stimuli and prolonged darkness on the release of endogenous dopamine was measured in the white perch and hybrid bass retinas. Isolated retinas were superfused and released dopamine was measured using extraction and high-pressure liquid chromatography separation techniques. Potassium-induced release did not depend on the background illumination nor on the period of previous darkness. Steady white light did not affect release, but flickering light of 2 Hz increased release about two-fold. During prolonged darkness, the release of dopamine increased steadily over the test period of 2 h, but only if the experiments were performed at night. During the day such an increase was not observed. The increased release during prolonged darkness at night was turned off by a short period of steady white light. The release patterns obtained from the white perch and the hybrid bass were similar. However, the hybrid bass retina showed much lower levels of dopamine than did the white perch retina.
