The RGU-photographic investigation of an intermediate latitude field in the direction to the Galactic centre is presented. 164 extra-galactic objects, identified by comparison of Minnesota and Basel charts, are excluded from the program. Also, a region with size 0.104 square-degrees, contaminated by cluster (M5) stars and affected by background light of the bright star HD 136202 is omitted. Contrary to previous investigations, a reddening of E(B – V) = 0.046, corresponding to E(G – R) = 0.07 mag is adopted. The separation of dwarfs and evolved stars is carried out by an empirical method, already applied in some of our works. A new calibration for the metallicity determination is used for dwarfs, while the absolute magnitude determination for stars of all categories is performed using the procedures given in the literature. There is good agreement between the observed logarithmic space density histograms and the galactic model gradients. Also, the local luminosity function agrees with Gliese's (1969) and Hipparcos (Jahreiss & Wielen 1997) luminosity functions, for stars with 2 < M(G) ≤ 8 mag. For giants, we obtained two different local space densities from comparison with two Galactic models, i.e. D*(0) = 6.63, close to that of Gliese (1969), and D*(0) = 6.79. A metallicity gradient, d[Fe/H]/dz = –0.20 dex kpc–1, is detected for dwarfs (only) with absolute magnitudes 4 < M(G) ≤ 6, corresponding to a spectral type interval F5–K0.

In the black hole (BH)–galaxy co-evolution framework, most of the star formation (SF) and the BH accretion are expected to take place in highly obscured conditions. The large amount of gas and dust absorbs most of the UV-to-soft-X radiation and re-emits it at longer wavelengths, mostly in the IR. Thus, obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) are very difficult to identify in optical or X-ray bands but shine bright in the IR. Moreover, X-ray background (XRB) synthesis models predict that a large fraction of the yet-unresolved XRB is due to the most obscured (Compton thick, CT: N $_{\text{H}}\ge 10^{24} \,\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$ ) of these AGN. In this work, we investigate the synergies between putative IR missions [using SPace Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA), proposed for European Space Agency (ESA)/M5 but withdrawn in 2020 October, and Origins Space Telescope, OST, as ‘templates’] and the X-ray mission Athena (Advanced Telescope for High ENergy Astrophysics), which should fly in early 2030s, in detecting and characterising AGN, with a particular focus on the most obscured ones. Using an XRB synthesis model, we estimated the number of AGN and the number of those which will be detected in the X-rays by Athena. For each AGN, we associated an optical-to-Far InfraRed (FIR) spectral energy distribution (SED) from observed AGN with both X-ray data and SED decomposition and used these SEDs to check if the AGN will be detected by SPICA-like or OST at IR wavelengths. We expect that, with the deepest Athena and SPICA-like (or OST) surveys, we will be able to photometrically detect in the IR more than 90% of all the AGN (down to $L_{2-10\text{keV}} \sim 10^{42}\,\mathrm{erg\ s}^{-1}$ and up to $z \sim 10$ ) predicted by XRB synthesis modeling, and we will detect at least half of them in the X-rays. The spectroscopic capabilities of the OST can provide ${\approx}51\,000$ and ${\approx}3\,400$ AGN spectra with $R= 300$ at 25–588 $\unicode[Times]{x03BC}$ m in the wide and deep surveys, respectively, the last one up to $z\approx 4$ . Athena will be extremely powerful in detecting and discerning moderate- and high-luminosity AGN, allowing us to properly select AGN even when the mid-IR torus emission is ‘hidden’ by the host galaxy contribution. We will constrain the intrinsic luminosity and the amount of obscuration for $\sim\!20\%$ of all the AGN (and $\sim\!50\%$ of those with $L_{2-10\text{keV}} > 3.2 \times 10^{43}\,\mathrm{erg\ s}^{-1}$ ) using the X-ray spectra provided by Athena WFI. We find that the most obscured and elusive CT-AGN will be exquisitely sampled by SPICA-like mission or OST and that Athena will allow a fine characterisation of the most luminous ones. This will provide a significant step forward in the process of placing stronger constraints on the yet-unresolved XRB and investigating the BH accretion rate evolution up to very high redshift ( $z \ge 4$ ).

The propagation of extragalactic particles within our Galaxy has been modelled. The flux of such particles is below the observed cosmic ray flux at most energies when their power-law spectrum is extrapolated back from the highest energies. Also, we expect that the propagation of extragalactic particles through static magnetic fields in the Galaxy will not result in a flux change to match the flux of particles measured here within the Galaxy. However, if we were to consider the observed cosmic rays to be of Galactic origin, there would be a remarkable similarity between the required Galactic injection flux and the extrapolated extragalactic flux. We consider here whether the scattering of extragalactic particles in the Galaxy together with an associated energy perturbation might be sufficient for the extragalactic beam to result in the production of ‘Galactic’ particles and, hence, essentially all of the observed cosmic rays. This appears to be possible.

Non-thermal radio emission has been detected from dMe stars, RS CVn binaries and W T Tauri stars. Polarisation and intensity measurements of the quiescent (i.e. non-flaring) emission indicate that the emission is gyrosynchrotron emission from mildly relativistic electrons spiralling in a magnetic field. A three-dimensional dipole magnetic field model for the stellar field is presented and the quiescent gyrosynchrotron emission from such a model is calculated and compared with observations. The model can account for many phenomenological features of quiescent emission. Quantitative comparisons of model results with observations indicate that the electron distribution in the emission region may be a magnetic mirroring distribution.

The discoveries made by the Voyager 2 spacecraft at Uranus in January 1986 are discussed in the light of the modern Laplacian theory for the formation of the solar system. Various accounts of this theory, which has as its basis the concept of supersonic convective turbulence, have been presented at previous meetings of the ASA (Prentice 1977, 1979, 1981a). The most important confirmation by Voyager was the discovery of 2 new satellite groups near orbital radii 2½ RU and 3½ RU (RU = Uranus’ equatorial radius = 26, 200 km), as first predicted in 1977. The discovery that the densities of the Uranian satellites are consistent with these bodies having condensed in a single compositional class, consisting of anhydrous rock, NH3 ice and CH4.6H2O clathrate hydrate in normal solar proportions, confirms the hypothesis that the chemistry of all planetary/regular satellite systems are accounted for by a single choice of the turbulence parameter, namely β = 0.107 ±0.001. The implication of the Voyager data for the origin of comets is also discussed.

For a spherically symmetrical distribution of gaseous matter in gravitational equilibrium the total pressure, density and other physical variables are all functions of the radial distance measured from the centre.

The past and present existence of smaller bodies in our solar system manifests itself in various ways through the appearance of asteroids, minor moons, planetary rings, surface cratering, etc. The occurrence of these planetesimals appears to be an integral intermediary step in the formation of the larger bodies from the initial grain state. In order to account for the discreteness and order of the planetary orbits and regular satellite systems, Prentice (1977, 1978) has suggested that the accumulation of this planetesimal material took place in a series of well defined orbits corresponding to the positions of a system of gaseous Laplacian rings that were shed by the primitive contracting parent cloud. Alfvén and Arrhenius (1975) have also drawn attention to the fact that planetesimal formation occurs far more effectively if the accumulation takes place along well defined ‘jet streams’. Hourigan (1977) has previously demonstrated how such concentrated rock/ice streams or ‘jet-streams’ naturally form on the mean Keplerian orbit of gaseous rings that are present in the Prentice-Laplace model.

We demonstrate how interactive, three-dimensional (3D) scientific visualizations can be efficiently interchanged between a variety of mediums. Through the use of an appropriate interchange format, and a unified interaction interface, we minimize the effort to produce visualizations appropriate for undertaking knowledge discovery at the astronomer's desktop, as part of conference presentations, in digital publications or as Web content. We use examples from cosmological visualization to address some of the issues of interchange and to describe our approach to adapting s2plot desktop visualizations to the Web2.

Model predictions of light changes due to non-radial stellar pulsation have been compared with the observations of light and colour changes in mid-B star variables made by Waelkens and Rufener (1985). It is concluded that these observations are consistent with the presence of low l (dipole and quadrupole) non-radial pulsations in the stars. This strengthens Waelkens and Rufener’s hypothesis that these variables may be identified with the 53 Persei stars. The differences between the model predictions for these large Q variables, which have periods in the 1 to 3 day range, and the predictions of small Q models, which apply to β Cephei variables, are explained.

There has been a great deal of progress in our understanding of planetary nebulae and their central stars during the past decade and a half. Most of this has come about through progress in observational techniques covering almost the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Theories of planetary nebula evolution have been put to better and better tests as more and more discriminating data have become available.

This review describes some of the progress made in observations and their interpretation, particularly in the context of the evolution of the nebulae and the central stars. It includes a discussion on the improved determinations of magnitudes and temperatures of the central stars, and of progress in the measurement of distances, and a reassessment of the observed mass-distribution of the central stars. The last topic has been at the centre of a lively debate for almost a decade now and has been responsible for a large number of studies of central star evolution, some this review briefly touchs upon.

We examine the production of cosmic ray positrons by photon-photon pair production of high-energy γ-rays on starlight photons. We start by calculating the production rate as a function of positron energy and distance from the Sun resulting from interactions with sunlight. The results are generalized to production on other types of star. We calculate the average production rate per unit volume averaged over the local region of the galaxy, and we estimate the contribution to the observed intensity from this process.

I review the observed properties of supernovae (SNe), concentrating on recent results obtained from high-quality optical spectra. Although most SNe Ia have similar characteristics at comparable phases, there are some notable variations, particularly in the velocities of the ejecta. Moreover, there is very preliminary evidence for significant differences between the spectra of SNe Ia in H II regions and in elliptical galaxies. SNe II exhibit a wide range of spectral properties, as expected if they are produced by massive stars. At late times strong lines of [O I] and [Ca II] appear in most SNe II, including SN 1987A. In some objects, however, these are absent; the spectrum of SN 1987F, for instance, closely resembled that of a Seyfert 1 nucleus, with prominent H I and Fe II emission lines. Type Ib SNe, which lack the 6150Â absorption band typical of SNe la near maximum brightness, develop strong emission lines of [O I] and [Ca II] many months past maximum, but hydrogen is absent. Hα emission with a P-Cygni profile has, on the other hand, been detected in the early-time spectrum of SN 1987K, an object which later became spectroscopically indistinguishable from an old SN Ib. There is evidence for very weak Hα in the early spectra of several additional SNe Ib. Moreover, 7 – 8 months past maximum the [O I]/Hα and [Ca II]/Hα intensity ratios in SN 1987A were higher than in a few other well-observed SNe II at corresponding times. Hence, Type II and Type Ib SNe may form a continuous sequence in which the mass of the hydrogen envelope is the main variable.

Waves of variation in the daily average cosmic ray intensity at the Earth’s surface were first detected in the neutron monitor record. Following the abnormal cosmic ray storm of September 1978, a sinusoidal 13.5 day periodicity was observed in the average intensity (Pomerantz and Duggal 1979), persisting for at least two solar rotations. Further observations, including underground data from the southern hemisphere, confirmed that not only were the waves isotropic but exhibited approximately a p−1 variational dependence on primary rigidity p (Duggal et al. 1981). No further evidence for this kind of wave has yet come to light. However, in the latter half of 1982 a series of 27-day waves that were apparently of a different character were detected. The evidence for their presence resulted from an analysis of the disturbed period that followed the occurrence of the large Forbush Decrease commencing 13 July 1982. It seemed at first that they could be described as anisotropic waves of the well-known interplanetary North-South asymmetry (Jacklyn and Pomerantz 1983).

The Molonglo Observatory synthesis telescope (MOST) of the University of Sydney (Mills 1981) produces maps of the 843 MHz continuum emission from fields of width 23′, 46′ or 70′ arc. The telescope comprises two co-linear east-west cylindrical paraboloids each 2186λ in length and separated by a gap of 43λ. For each paraboloid a phasing network (Durdin et al. 1984) generates a comb of 64 contiguous fan beams. Mapping is accomplished in real time during a 12-h observation by overlaying, in the map plane, the instantaneous cross-correlations of corresponding beams. The synthesized point-source response (beam) produced by this method has a width of 43″ (E-W) by 43″ cosec δ (N-S).

Over the past years considerable information has been acquired concerning the structure and magnitude of sunspot magnetic fields; however, there is a paucity of data concerning the motions of the seats of these fields, i.e., individual umbrae within a spot group. The well-known effects of differential rotation cause sunspots to diverge with time in longitude at a daily rate of, at most, a few degrees per solar rotation. On the other hand, a limited number of investigations have shown that individual umbrae can have proper motions of up to 100 to 200 m/s, or about ten times greater than effects of differential rotation. In addition, equally limited observations have shown that umbrae sometimes rotate about an axis through their centre; in an extreme case the rotation reached 30°/day. The last large sunspot group of the last cycle, having Central Meridian Passage 20.5 September, 1963, has been studied by means of photoheliograms and magnetograms obtained four days before and four days after CMP at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory. The magnetograms show the distribution of both the transverse and longitudinal components of the magnetic field in the activity region. In this study we have studied umbral motions and their relation to the magnetic field.

The β Cep variables are characterised by light variations of a few per cent and velocity variations of up to a few tens of km/s over periods of from about 2.5 to 7 hours. Spectral types range from BO to B2 and luminosity classes from IV to II-III, corresponding to masses from 8 to 18 M ⊙. The light and velocity curves are 90° out of phase, so that maximum light (and also maximum temperature) occur at minimum radius.

We measure the cosmic star formation history out to z = 1.3 using a sample of 918 radio-selected star-forming galaxies within the 2-deg2 COSMOS field. To increase our sample size, we combine 1.4-GHz flux densities from the VLA-COSMOS catalogue with flux densities measured from the VLA-COSMOS radio continuum image at the positions of I < 26.5 galaxies, enabling us to detect 1.4-GHz sources as faint as 40 μJy. We find that radio measurements of the cosmic star formation history are highly dependent on sample completeness and models used to extrapolate the faint end of the radio luminosity function. For our preferred model of the luminosity function, we find the star formation rate density increases from 0.017 M⊙ yr−1 Mpc−3 at z ∼ 0.225 to 0.092 M⊙ yr−1 Mpc−3 at z ∼ 1.1, which agrees to within 40% of recent UV, IR and 3-GHz measurements of the cosmic star formation history.

The Algol type eclipsing binary KZ Pav has been observed over one complete orbit (0.95 days) with theAustraliaTelescope CompactArray. Contemporaneous optical photometric data from the University of Southern Queensland’s Observatory at Mount Kent were also collected and have been included in this multi-wavelength study.

Preliminary indications are that the low levels of emission observed share similarities to those of some RS CVn binaries. The optical data show phase-linked effects which can be related to the mass transfer process of Algols. The possibility that the radio emission may be related to this process is considered.

Cosmic radiation is capable of depositing significant quantities of energy and momentum in gravitational wave antennas at times that will generally be random with respect to gravitational signals. Such cosmic ray effects may generate noise signals at detectable levels compared to antenna design thresholds at rates of a few per year but, since antennas will not be capable of absorbing all the cosmic ray energy, it should be readily possible to construct vetoing cosmic ray detectors. For proposed interferometer antennas, a deposition of a few hundred GeV will produce a detectable noise signal and the veto will require about 100 MeV of energy deposition outside the antenna. We consider here some of the principles involved in the generation of gravitational antenna noise by cosmic ray particles and we describe a veto system to be installed at the Perth gravitational wave observatory.

Light curves of photospheric radius expansion (PRE) bursts, a subset of type I X-ray bursts, have been used as standard candles to estimate the ‘nominal PRE distances’ for 63% of PRE bursters (bursters), assuming PRE burst emission is spherically symmetric. Model-independent geometric parallaxes of bursters provide a valuable chance to test models of PRE bursts (PRE models) and can be provided in some cases by Gaia astrometry of the donor stars in bursters. We searched for counterparts to 115 known bursters in the Gaia Early Data Release 3 and confirmed 4 bursters with Gaia counterparts that have detected ( $\gt\!3\,\sigma$ , prior to zero-point correction) parallaxes. We describe a generic approach to the Gaia parallax zero point as well as its uncertainty using an ensemble of Gaia quasars individually determined for each target. Assuming the spherically symmetric PRE model is correct, we refined the resultant nominal PRE distances of three bursters (i.e. Cen $\textrm{X}-4$ , Cyg $\textrm{X}-2$ , and $4\textrm{U}\,0919-54$ ) and put constraints on their compositions of the nuclear fuel powering the bursts. Finally, we describe a method for testing the correctness of the spherically symmetric PRE model using parallax measurements and provide preliminary results.
