The Keck Interferometer Nuller (KIN) is one of the major scientific and technical precursors to the Terrestrial Planet Finder Interferometer (TPF-I) mission. KIN's primary objective is to measure the level of exo-zodiacal mid-infrared emission around nearby main sequence stars, which requires deep broad-band nulling of astronomical sources of a few Janskys at 10 microns. A number of new capabilitites are needed in order to reach that goal with the Keck telescopes: mid-infrared coherent recombination, interferometric operation in “split pupil” mode, N-band optical path stabilization using K-band fringe tracking and internal metrology, and eventually, active atmospheric dispersion correction. We report here on the progress made implementing these new functionalities, and discuss the initial levels of extinction achieved on the sky.

We present a series of N-body simulations examining the tidal impact of satellite dwarfs on galactic disks, in particular on the abilities of satellites to excite warps like the one seen in the disk of the Milky Way. We have examined satellites with masses spanning 1.5 orders of magnitude, ranging from the Sgr dSph to the LMC. Orbits similar to the eccentric polar orbit of Sgr were examined, along with orbits of intermediate inclination and of lower eccentricity. The fundamental physical processes which govern the transfer of angular momentum between the satellite and disk, and within the disk, are identified to be precession of the satellite orbit, shrinking of the satellite orbit due to dynamical friction, warping of the disk within a slewing potential, and differential precession. We find that although very large satellites can tidally excite warps shortly after each perigalactic passage, the effects of such satellites are quite destructive and the resulting disks have smaller warps and appear more disturbed than the disks of the Milky Way and other strongly-warped galaxies. Smaller satellites, however, may be capable of producing the minor warps typical of many disk galaxies.

The European Space Agency's Darwin and NASA's Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF) are among the most challenging space science missions ever considered. Their principal objective is to detect Earth-like planets around nearby stars and to characterize their atmospheres. Darwin and TPF-I are currently conceived as nulling interferometers with free-flying telescopes. Within the frame of the Darwin program, the ESA and the European Southern Observatory (ESO), supported by European industries and scientific institutes, have performed two parallel Phase A studies of a ground-based nulling interferometry experiment (GENIE) at the site of ESO's Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) in Paranal, Chile. GENIE will demonstrate several key technologies required for the Darwin mission. Its science objectives include the detection and characterization of dust disks and low-mass companions around nearby stars. These studies have established detailed instrumental designs, in which GENIE will operate in the L' band around 3.8 microns as a single Bracewell nulling or constructive interferometer, using either two Auxiliary or two Unit Telescopes. The studies were supported by detailed numerical simulations which indicated the possibility of detection and low-resolution spectroscopy in nulling mode of extra-solar giant planets (EGPs) with atmospheric temperatures down to 700 K, provided that a proper calibration of instrumental effects is applied. Detection of circumstellar exo-zodiacal (EZ) dust clouds is possible down to 0.5 mJy, with interesting prospects for the characterization of planet-forming disks.

The formation of H2 and HD molecules on interstellar dust grains is studied using rate equation and master equation models. Rate equations are used in the analysis of laboratory experiments, which examine the formation of molecular hydrogen on astrophysically relevant surfaces. However, under interstellar conditions, rate equations are not suitable for the calculation of reaction rates on dust-grain surfaces. Due to the low flux and the sub-micron size of the grains, the populations of H and D atoms on a single grain are likely to be small. In this case the reaction rates are dominated by fluctuations and should be calculated using stochastic methods. The rate of molecular hydrogen formation in interstellar clouds is evaluated using the master equation, taking into account the distribution of grain sizes.

I review here the current ideas regarding the origin, evolution, and physical nature of hot diffuse gas in normal, starburst, interacting and merging galaxies, using recent X-ray observations with XMM-Newton and Chandra. Many types of diffuse X-ray structures, including winds, bubbles, halos, chimneys and fountains, can be formed in galaxies, and can enrich the intergalactic medium with mass, energy and metals. This has profound implications as regards galactic formation and evolution, and the enrichment and evolution of galaxy groups and clusters.

Star formation at very low metallicity is expected to produce only massive stars. This is a result of the low cooling rate. Hydrodynamical simulations of star formation from zero metallicity gas suggest that the first stars had masses in excess of about 102M[odot ]. These stars can not be observed because of their large redshift and their very short lifetime. However, a similar (but not the same) effect might be observable in regions of star formation close to very luminous radiation sources, where intense radiation may destroy dust and CO molecules in starforming clouds. Such clouds will be warmer than in normal metal rich star forming regions because of the reduced cooling, which is then predominantly due to H2 and atomic C and O. Under those conditions star formation may result in the formation of high mass stars without the normal large numbers of accompanying low mass stars. Observations show that this process may occur close to the centre of the interacting galaxy M51, where the intense radiation of the nuclear starburst and the small dust content destroyed molecular CO in star forming regions. HST observations of this region show the presence of about 30 massive stars, of $25\textlessM\textless 150 M\odot$, without the accompanying clusters of low mass stars.

Division V, “Variable Stars”, consists of Commission 27, also called “Variable Stars” and Commission 42, “Close Binaries”. Thus the former deals with stars whose variations are intrinsic, whereas in the latter the variations are caused by the interactions between the components in the binary. It is evident that the definition of the Division is predominantly observational, and there may be cases where the assignment of an object to one of the two commissions might be in doubt (a recent somewhat related example was the first detection of an extra-solar planet, in 54 Pegasi, where intrinsic variability of the star in the form of high-order g modes was also initially suspected).

The capability of extremely large telescopes (ELTs) to resolve stellar populations in distant galaxies has been investigated through simulation. With real stellar clusters as templates, images were created using a realistic point spread function model. Through variation of parameters such as aperture, Strehl ratio and exposure, as well as use of various stellar populations and densities, we study ELT capability to probe galaxy formation and evolution history. We conclude that a 50m ELT should allow study of these processes in the Virgo galaxy cluster.

We present results from an Eulerian adaptive mesh refinement simulation demonstrating the formation of a primordial star within an HII region produced by an earlier massive star. Despite the higher temperatures of the ionized gas, this second star formed within 23 million years of its neighbor's death. The enhanced electron fraction within the HII region catalyzes rapid molecular hydrogen formation, leading to enhanced cooling in the preprocessed halo. This “second generation” primordial protostar has a much lower accretion rate than its predecessor, due in part to the higher angular momentum of the halo in which it forms. This situation may allow binaries or multiple systems of low-mass stars to form. The result discussed here is described in more detail in O'Shea et al. (2005).

We investigate the chemical abundances of local star-forming galaxies which cause damped Lyman alpha lines. A metallicity versus redshift diagram was constructed, on which the chemical abundances of low-redshift star-forming galaxy populations are compared with those of high-redshift damped Lyman alpha systems. We discuss two types of experiments on individual star-forming galaxies. In the first, the damped Lyman alpha line is created against an internal ultraviolet light source generated by a star-forming cluster or a supernova explosion. In the second, the damped Lyman alpha line is seen against a background quasar. The metallicities measured from ionised gas in the star-forming regions, and neutral gas in the damped Lyman alpha systems, are compared with one another on a case-by-case basis. We highlight the occurrence of the star-forming galaxy/quasar pair SBS 1543+593/HS 1543+5921, where the emission- and absorption-line derived abundances give the same result. We argue that we therefore can in principle interpret damped Lyman alpha system metallicities as an extension of star-forming galaxy metallicities to higher redshifts, supporting the idea that gas-rich galaxies had lower chemical abundances when they were younger.

The stellar Initial Mass Function (IMF) is a quantity which accounts for the distribution of the masses of stars, when they are formed. All the information available on the IMF in the low-mass regime comes from studies of our galaxy alone. Investigations on the content of low-mass stars in other neighbouring galaxies are limited by observational constraints, which do not allow the detection of the fainter stars with statistical significance. Only recently results from observations with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) of stellar populations in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) down to $\sim$ 0.7 M$_\odot$ confirm systematic variations in the low-mass IMF expected from theoretical considerations (Gouliermis et al. 2005). Direct imaging of resolved stellar populations in massive young clusters throughout the Local Group would be possible with Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs). Hence, a sizeable sample of young clusters for which IMF variations can be detected would become available. We present our method for testing the efficiency of observations with ELTs in detecting low-mass stars in compact clusters of the Local Group galaxies. We plan to simulate imaging with ELTs and use the results of their photometry in order to investigate the effect on the derived low-mass IMF. This method demonstrates the advantages that will be introduced to crowded field photometry in close-by galaxies with ELTs.

We review the main laboratory results of investigations of processes of molecular hydrogen formation on surfaces. The problem of the formation of molecular hydrogen is a fundamental issue in astrophysics/astrochemistry, because of the great importance that molecular hydrogen has for the structure and evolution of our Universe. Such experiments are done using ultra-high vacuum, low temperature, and atomic/molecular beam techniques to study the formation of molecular hydrogen on dust grain analogues in conditions as close as technically feasible to the ones present in relevant ISM environments. In experiments conducted at Syracuse University, we studied H2 formation on the three most ISM-relevant classes of surfaces: silicates, carbonaceous materials and amorphous water ice. Our experimental investigations range from the evaluation of the catalytic efficiency of the studied surfaces to the energetics of the reaction, i.e. the partition of the formation energy between the grain and the nascent molecule. Such measurements have been done by changing various parameters such as: the temperature of the interstellar dust analogue, the kinetic temperature of the atoms, the morphology of the surface and, to be completed soon, the composition of the solid. Quantitative and qualitative information on the processes of H2 formation is then fed in theoretical models to extract results that pertain to desired ISM environments.

From a Chandra survey of nine interacting galaxy systems the evolution of X-ray emission during the merger process has been investigated. From comparing LX/LK and LFIR/LB it is found that the X-ray luminosity peaks ∼300 Myr before nuclear coalescence, even though we know that rapid and increasing star formation is still taking place at this time. It is likely that this drop in X-ray luminosity is a consequence of outflows breaking out of the galactic discs of these systems. At a time ∼1 Gyr after coalescence, the merger-remnants in our sample are X-ray dim when compared to typical X-ray luminosities of mature elliptical galaxies. However, we do see evidence that these systems will start to resemble typical elliptical galaxies at a greater dynamical age, given the properties of the 3 Gyr system within our sample, indicating that halo regeneration will take place within low LX merger-remnants.

The space mission PEGASE, proposed to the CNES (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales = French Space Agency) in the framework of its call for scientific proposals : “formation flying missions”, is a 2-aperture interferometer, composed by 3 free flying satellites (2 siderostats and 1 beam combiner), allowing baselines from 50 to 500 m in both nulling and visibility modes. With an angular resolution of a few mas and a spectral resolution of several tens in the spectral range 2.5-5 microns, PEGASE has several goals:

1. science : spectroscopy of hot jupiters (Pegasides) and brown dwarves, exploration of the inner part of protoplanetary disks

2. technology : validation in real space conditions of formation flying, nulling and visibility interferometry concepts.

The Spitzer Space Telescope has delivered impressive infrared images of numerous low-mass star forming regions at unprecedented sensitivity. In this paper we focus on their high-mass counterparts, the most massive HII regions in the Local Group: NGC3603 (MW), W49A (MW), 30 Doradus (LMC), NGC346 (SMC), and NGC604 (M33). The deep mid-IR images, taken with IRAC show the complex structure of the ISM, the interplay between ISM and stellar clusters, and reveal new sites of star formation. We compare the IRAC data with observations from Chandra and find good anti-correlations between the mid-IR and soft X-ray emission regions. We also investigate the commonalities and differences between the giant HII regions NGC604 and 30 Doradus.

A cold dark matter halo big enough to host the Milky Way contains hundreds of subhalos massive enough to host dwarf galaxies. The difference to the much smaller observed number of satellite galaxies seems to be a problem for CDM. The galaxy number density profile and disk like configuration are also different form the total subhalo populations in CDM simulations. A number of different models of dwarf galaxy formation which are able to reproduce the right number of luminous subhalos have been proposed. Some of them also give the right radial distributions and make disk like configurations more probable. Additional information about the typical formation times and sites of dwarf galaxies can be found in the stellar halo of the Milky Way, i.e. from the stellar debris of tidally disrupted dwarfs. A stellar halo with a realistic concentration is obtained when most dwarfs form early (before redshift 10) in small halos (virial mass above $10^8$ solar masses). This mass scale found from simulations of dark matter structure formation coincides with the virial temperature of $10^4 K$ which is needed for efficient atomic cooling.

We report on the distribution of metallicities, [Fe/H], for very metal-poor stars in the halo of the Galaxy. Although the primary information on the nature of the Metallicity Distribution Function (MDF) is obtained from the two major recent surveys for metal-poor stars, the HK survey of Beers and collaborators, and the Hamburg/ESO Survey of Christlieb and collaborators, we also discuss the MDF derived from the publicly available database of stellar spectra and photometry contained in the third data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR-3). Even though the SDSS was not originally planned as a stellar survey, significant numbers of stars have been observed to date – DR-3 contains spectroscopy for over 70,000 stars, at least half of which are suitable for abundance determinations. There are as many very metal-poor ([Fe/H] $< -2.0$) stars in DR-3 as have been obtained from all previous survey efforts combined. We also discuss prospects for significant expansion of the list of metal-poor stars to be obtained from the recently funded extension of the SDSS, which includes the project SEGUE: Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Evolution.

We show that the extinction of quasar absorbers increases exponentially with the logarithmic column density of any volatile metal (e.g. zinc), with a characteristic turning point above which the quasars are severely dimmed. We derive the relation between extinction, HI column density ($N_\mathrm{HI}$), metallicity ($Z \equiv N_\mathrm{ZnII}/N_\mathrm{HI}$), and fraction of iron in dust [$f_\mathrm{Fe}(Z)$] in Damped Lyman $\alpha$ (DLA) systems. We use this relation to estimate the effect of dust obscuration on the statistical distributions of $N_\mathrm{HI}$ and $Z$ measured in magnitude-limited surveys of DLAs. In the redshift range where the measurements of zinc column densities have sufficient statistics ($1.8 \leq z \leq 3$) we find that the obscuration bias affects the shapes of the observed distributions. The metallicity distribution is particularly affected by the bias, which hampers the detection of DLA galaxies with near Solar metallicity. Our results perfectly reproduce, without tuning the dust parameters, the DLA observational threshold $\log N(\mathrm{ZnII})\,\mathrm{[cm^{-2}]} \lesssim 13.15$ found by Boissé and collaborators in 1998, in terms of a rapid rise of the obscuration. Our predictions of the effects of the bias on the statistics of DLAs are consistent with observational results obtained from unbiased surveys of radio-selected quasars.

We report the major highlights of variable star research within the past three years. This overview is limited to intrinsically variable stars, because the achievements in variable star research stemming from binarity, or multiplicity in general, is covered by the summary report of Commissions 26 and 42.

As part of a study of the detailed abundance patterns in extremely metal-poor stars, we have compared our samples of giants and dwarfs with two samples of dwarfs measured by different teams. For most elements the abundances are in good agreement, but for C, Na, and Al we show that the atmospheric abundances are different in dwarfs and in giants. For C the difference could be explained by “atmospheric effects” or by the influence of the first dredge-up, but for Na and Al deep mixing inside the stars must be invoked. Until now, such deep mixing has not been observed in metal-poor field stars. An excess scatter in [Mg/Fe] in giants remains unexplained.
