The Yonsei-Yale Isochrones have been widely used since its birth in 2001. We announce a major upgrade mainly making varieties of helium values available. The recent works on the globular clusters with extreme helium abundances have called for such a need. The new version of the Y2 Isochrones are available for [α/Fe] = 0 through 0.6, ΔY/ΔZ = 1.5 through 3.0, and extreme helium abundances (Y = normal 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2), and for 11 metallicity grids, with full capability of interpolation. The database will be powerful for making population models. Besides, the accuracy of the models on the lower main sequence has been substantially improved. We illustrate the major upgrades and demonstrate the power of the new grids.

Most treatments of lower hybrid waves include either electromagnetic or warm-plasma effects, but not both. Here we compare numerical dispersion curves for lower hybrid waves with a new analytic dispersion relation that includes both warm and electromagnetic effects. Very good agreement is obtained over significant ranges in wavenumber and plasma parameters, except where ion magnetization effects become important.

The supersonic solar wind is highly variable on all time scales near the Sun but fluctuations are moderated by self-interaction as this plasma moves outward. The solar wind runs into many obstacles on its way out. The neutrals from the interstellar medium slow it down. Magnetospheres and interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) cause shocks to form so that the flow can divert around these obstacles. Finally the solar wind is stopped by the circum-heliospheric interstellar medium (CHISM); it slows at the termination shock and then turns down the heliotail. The shocks and sheaths formed by these interactions cover scales which vary by orders of magnitude; some aspects of these shocks and sheaths look very similar and some very different. We discuss solar wind evolution, interaction with the neutrals from the CHISM, foreshocks, shock structure, shock heating, asymmetries, and sheath variability in different sheath regions.

The presence of an undersurface ocean renders Europa as one of the few planetary bodies in our Solar System that has been conjectured to have possibly harbored life. Some of the organic and inorganic species present in the ocean underneath are expected to transport upwards through the relatively thin ice crust and manifest themselves as impurities of the water ice surface. For this reason, together with its unique dynamic atmosphere and geological features, Europa has attracted strong scientific interests in past decades.

Europa is imbedded inside the Jovian magnetosphere, and, therefore, is constantly subjected to the immerse surrounding radiations, similar to the other three Galilean satellites. The magnetosphere-atmosphere-surface interactions form a complex system that provides a multitude of interesting geophysical phenomenon that is unique in the Solar System. The atmosphere of Europa is thought to have created by, mostly, charged particles sputtering of surface materials. Consequently, the study of Europa's atmosphere can be used as a tool to infer the surface composition. In this paper, we will discuss our recent model studies of Europa's near-surface atmosphere. In particular, the abundances and distributions of the dominant O2 and H2O species, and of other organic and inorganic minor species will be addressed.

The Historical Instruments Working Group (WG-HI) and Commission 41 started planning an interdisciplinary conference titled Astronomy and its instruments before and after Galileo since January 2007. This conference, as an IYA2009 initiative, aims “to highlight mankind's path toward an improved knowledge of the sky using mathematical and mechanical tools as well as monuments and buildings, giving rise, in doing so, to scientific astronomy”. Commission 46 and Commission 55 also support this conference, to be held on the Isle of San Servolo, Venice (Italy), 27 September – 3 October 2009. As a fact of history, it was in Venice that Galileo was advised and got material (glass) to make his telescope, and in Venice he presented an working instrument to Venetian Doge in August 1609. The conference is co-sponsored by IAU as a Joint Symposium with the INAF – Astronomical Observatory of Padova, Italy.

Binaries exist in all clusters and much evidence suggests that close-binary evolution makes an important contribution to the blue straggler population, at least in some clusters as well as in the field. Here we present different channels to blue stragglers from primordial binary evolution and examine their contributions to the integrated spectral energy distribution of the host clusters in theory via binary population synthesis.

Discoveries of magnetic fields in pulsating B and Be stars have been claimed from low-resolution spectropolarimetric observations with FORS1 at VLT. We used the new generation of high-resolution spectropolarimeters, ESPaDOnS at CFHT and NARVAL at TBL, to check for the existence of these fields. We find that most of the claimed magnetic stars do not host a magnetic field. This work shows the importance of a critical analysis of FORS1 data when searching for weak magnetic fields in early-type stars and the advantage of using ESPaDOnS and NARVAL to study such type of stars.

The NASA Star and Exoplanet Database (NStED) is a general purpose stellar archive with the aim of providing support for NASA's planet finding and characterization goals, stellar astrophysics, and the planning of NASA and other space missions. There are two principal components of NStED: a database of (currently) 140,000 nearby stars and exoplanet-hosting stars, and an archive dedicated to high precision photometric surveys for transiting exoplanets. We present a summary of the NStED stellar database, functionality, tools, and user interface. NStED currently serves the following kinds of data for 140,000 stars (where available): coordinates, multiplicity, proper motion, parallax, spectral type, multiband photometry, radial velocity, metallicity, chromospheric and coronal activity index, and rotation velocity/period. Furthermore, the following derived quantities are given wherever possible: distance, effective temperature, mass, radius, luminosity, space motions, and physical/angular dimensions of habitable zone. Queries to NStED can be made using constraints on any combination of the above parameters. In addition, NStED provides tools to derive specific inferred quantities for the stars in the database, cross-referenced with available extra-solar planetary data for those host stars. We describe our work on the development and application of a stellar structure code to compute model sequences representing donor stars in interacting binaries subject to rapid (adiabatic) mass-loss. The donor star is assumed to remain in hydrostatic equilibrium, but no heat flow is allowed. These sequences can be used to define bifurcation sequences in close binary evolution, and to circumscribe possible survivors of common envelope evolution.

Commission 46 continues its task in the triennium, which started in September 2006. It seeks to further contribute to the development and improvement of astronomical education at all levels all over the world through various projects initiated, maintained and to be developed by the Commission, and by disseminating information concerning astronomy education.

By performing global 1D MHD simulations, we investigate the heating and acceleration of solar and stellar winds in open magnetic field regions. Our simulation covers from photosphere to 20-60 stellar radii, and takes into account radiative cooling and thermal conduction. We do not adopt ad hoc heating function; heating is automatically calculated from the solutions of Riemann problem at the cell boundaries. In the solar wind case we impose transverse photospheric motions with velocity ~1 km/s and period between 20 seconds and 30 minutes, which generate outgoing Alfvén waves. We have found that the dissipation of Alfvén waves through compressive wave generation by decay instability is quite effective owing to the density stratification, which leads to the sufficient heating and acceleration of the coronal plasma. Next, we study the evolution of stellar winds from main sequence to red giant phases. When the stellar radius becomes ~10 times of the Sun, the steady hot corona with temperature 106 K, suddenly disappears. Instead, many hot and warm (105 – 106 K) bubbles are formed in cool (T < 2 × 104 K) chromospheric winds because of the thermal instability of the radiative cooling function; the red giant wind is not a steady stream but structured outflow.

The NASA Star and Exoplanet Database (NStED) is a general purpose stellar archive with the aim of providing support for NASA's planet finding and characterization goals, stellar astrophysics, and the planning of NASA and other space missions. There are two principal components of NStED: a database of (currently) 140,000 nearby stars and exoplanet-hosting stars, and an archive dedicated to high-precision photometric surveys for transiting exoplanets. We present a summary of the latter component: the NStED Exoplanet Transit Survey Service (NStED-ETSS), along with its content, functionality, tools, and user interface. NStED-ETSS currently serves data from the TrES Survey of the Kepler Field as well as dedicated photometric surveys of four stellar clusters. NStED-ETSS aims to serve both the surveys and the broader astronomical community by archiving these data and making them available in a homogeneous format. Examples of usability of ETSS include investigation of any time-variable phenomena in data sets not studied by the original survey team, application of different techniques or algorithms for planet transit detections, combination of data from different surveys for given objects, statistical studies, etc. NStED-ETSS can be accessed at http://nsted.ipac.caltech.edu.

The slowly pulsating B3V star 16 Pegasi was discovered by Hubrig et al. (2006) to be magnetic, based on low-resolution spectropolarimetric observations with FORS1 at the VLT. We have confirmed the presence of a magnetic field with new measurements with the spectropolarimeters Narval at TBL, France and Espadons at CFHT, Hawaii during 2007. The most likely period is about 1.44 d for the modulation of the field, but this could not be firmly established with the available data set. No variability has been found in the UV stellar wind lines. Although the star was reported once to show Hα in emission, there exists at present no confirmation that the star is a Be star.

Cassini RADAR observations now permit an initial assessment of the inventory of two classes, presumed to be organic, of Titan surface materials: polar lake liquids and equatorial dune sands. Several hundred lakes or seas have been observed, of which dozens are each estimated to contain more hydrocarbon liquid than the entire known oil and gas reserves on Earth. Dark dunes cover some 20% of Titan's surface, and comprise a volume of material several hundred times larger than Earth's coal reserves. Overall, however, the identified surface inventories (> 3 × 104 km3 of liquid, and >2 × 105 km3 of dune sands) are small compared with estimated photochemical production on Titan over the age of the Solar System. The sand volume is too large to be accounted for simply by erosion in observed river channels or ejecta from observed impact craters. The lakes are adequate in extent to buffer atmospheric methane against photolysis in the short term, but do not contain enough methane to sustain the atmosphere over geologic time. Thus, unless frequent resupply from the interior buffers this greenhouse gas at exactly the right rate, dramatic climate change on Titan is likely in its past, present and future.

With 40 or more transiting exoplanets now known, the time is ripe to seek patterns and correlations among their observed properties, which may give important insights into planet formation, structure, and evolution. This task is made difficult by the widely different methodologies that have been applied to measure their properties in individual cases. Furthermore, in many systems our knowledge of the planet properties is limited by the knowledge of the properties of the parent stars. To address these difficulties we have undertaken the first comprehensive analysis of the data for 23 transiting planets using a uniform methodology. We revisit several of the recently proposed correlations, and find new ones involving the metallicity of the parent stars.

KZ Hya is a short-period high amplitude metal pool population II pulsating variable. Its spectral type is B9-A7 III/IV. Its average effective temperature is 7640K. But its mass is only 0.97 solar mass. From normal stellar evolution and H-R diagram, we can not get such a solar mass star at post main sequence stage with so high effective temperature and so early type spectra. We observe this star since 1984 till now, 23years past. Finally we prove it is inside a binary with at least 2 unseen companions. The most massive companion has mass larger than 0.76 solar mass, mostly may be 0.99 to 3.99 solar mass. That means this companion must be a massive white dwarf. The distance between tow companions is about 10 AU. If the companion is white dwarf, this binary are fairly inside the nebula. This system is very old, older than 7.59 billion years. The nebula should be already diluted to very low density so that we can see the nebula directly. As its spectra type is B9III/VI at some time of maximum light and the visual absolute magnitude is 2.78, about 2 magnitudes higher than our sun. We can image that at the end of AGB stage of the companion, the strong fast winds from hot central core push away the outer atmosphere of KZ Hya. Later KZ Hya absorbed a part of Helium rich material from the companion. This will cause hydrogen content X decrease from 0.75 to about 0.62. Then KZ Hya looks like a hot post main sequence star

We present the results of a new magnetic field survey of Herbig Ae/Be and A debris disk stars. They are used to determine whether magnetic field properties in these stars are correlated with the mass-accretion rate, disk inclinations, companion(s), Silicates, PAHs, or show a more general correlation with age and X-ray emission as expected for the decay of a remnant dynamo.

The Program Group for World-wide Development of Astronomy (PG-WWDA) is one of nine Commission 46 program groups engaged with various aspects of astronomical education or development of astronomy education and research in the developing world. In the case of PG-WWDA, its goals are to promote astronomy education and research in the developing world through a variety of activities, including visiting astronomers in developing countries and interacting with them by way of giving encouragement and support.

Lightning is considered as one of energy sources for synthesis of biochemical compounds. Numerous theoretical and experimental researches of gas-grain chemistry show that chemical reactions on the gas - ice boundary play a considerable role in such synthesis. In this connection the greatest interest represents studying lightning in gas-dusty atmospheres of water-containing bodies (comets, ice satellites of Jupiter and Saturn).

The numerical method developed by Veselovsky & Ivanov (2006), together with magnetograms of the Sun obtained at the photospheric level were used to calculate the coronal magnetic field with open, closed and intermittent topology during March-December 2007. The results of the modelling are compared with stereoscopic images and movies of the corona observed by EUV telescopes onboard STEREO and SOHO spacecraft. The sources of the permanent and transient high speed solar wind streams as well as the sector structure and the heliospheric plasma sheet observed at the Earth's orbit by the ACE and STEREO spacecraft are discussed.
