Both ground and space-based transit observatories are poised to significantly increase the number of known transiting planets and the number of precisely measured transit times. A planet's transit times represent a clock that can be used to infer the presence of additional planets. Although modeling the transit time variations (TTVs) of a known system is simple, interpreting those variations in terms of the mass and orbital elements of a perturbing planet is much more challenging. Because mutual planetary perturbations are often the dominant source of TTVs, the observable signal can be extremely complex. In these proceedings, we present early results based on a simplistic analysis of the root-mean-square TTV deviation amplitude. We are preparing a more thorough analysis based on a computationally efficient surrogate Bayesian model, which may be combined with analytic approximations and n-body integrations in order to establish the sensitivity of TTV observations to terrestrial-like planets as a function of the system architecture. Besides aiding the interpretation of future transit timing observations, we hope our results can help maximize the productivity of transit timing follow-up campaigns by guiding survey design decisions such as the choice of targets, required precision, and desired number/time span of TTV observations.

Meteorites and Interplanetary Dust Particles (IDPs) are supposed to originate from asteroids and comets, sampling the most primitive bodies in the Solar System. They contain abundant carbonaceous material. Some of this, mostly insoluble organic matter (IOM), likely originated in the protosolar molecular cloud, based on spectral properties and H and N isotope characteristics. Together with cometary material returned with the Stardust mission, these samples provide a benchmark for models aiming to understand organic chemistry in the interstellar medium, as well as for mechanisms that secured the survival of these fragile molecules during Solar System formation. The carrier molecules of the isotope anomalies are largely unknown, although amorphous carbonaceous spheres, so-called nanoglobules, have been identified as carriers. We are using Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry to identify isotopically anomalous material in meteoritic IOM and IDPs at a ~100-200 nm scale. Organics of most likely interstellar origin are then extracted with the Focused-Ion-Beam technique and prepared for synchrotron X-ray and Transmission Electron Microscopy. These experiments yield information on the character of the H- and N-bearing interstellar molecules: While the association of H and N isotope anomalies with nanoglobules could be confirmed, we have also identified amorphous, micron-sized monolithic grains. D-enrichments in meteoritic IOM appear not to be systematically associated with any specific functional groups, whereas 15N-rich material can be related to imine and nitrile functionality. The large 15N- enrichments observed here (δ15N > 1000 ‰) cannot be reconciled with models using interstellar ammonia ice reactions, and hence, provide new constraints for understanding the chemistry in cold interstellar clouds.

We report the results of our study of magnetic fields in a sample of Be stars using spectropolarimetric data obtained at the European Southern Observatory with the multi-mode instrument FORS 1 installed at the 8m Kueyen telescope. The detected magnetic fields are rather weak, not stronger than ~150G. A few classical Be stars display cyclic variability of the magnetic field with periods of tens of minutes.

We summarize and discuss our recent works on the structure and evolution of low-mass W UMa-type contact binary stars. Three conclusions are given as followings: (1) The energy transfer is taken place in the radiative region of common envelope of W UMa systems; (2) The magnetic activity level of W UMa systems is weaker than that of non-contact binaries or rapid-rotating single stars; (3) The evolutionary outcome of W UMa systems might be the rapid-rotating single stars, and an average lifetime is derived to be about 7 Gyr for W UMa systems.

Annual reports of the IAU Commission 46 Program Group Teaching for Astronomy Development (TAD) for the years 2006 and 2007 have been published in IAU Information Bulletin 100, 47; and 101, 40. Here the 2008 report is presented.

The IAU Commission 46 Program Group International Schools for Young Astronomers (ISYA) was created in 1967 (Gerbaldi 2008). During the period 2006 till August 2008 two ISYAs took place, one in Malaysia and a second one in Turkey.

This contribution dedicated to the analysis of the magnetism of chemically peculiar (CP) stars of the upper Main Sequence. We use our own measurements and published data to compile a catalog of magnetic CP stars containing a total of 326 objects with confidently detected magnetic fields and 29 stars which are very likely to possess magnetic field. Our analysis shows that the number of magnetic CP stars decreases with increasing field strength in accordance with exponential law, hotter and faster rotating stars have stronger fields. Intensity of depressions in the continua correlates with the magnetic field strength.

We present an analysis of eight barium stars, providing their atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g, [Fe/H], ξt) and chemical abundances, based on the high signal-to-noise ratio and high resolution Echelle spectra. The s-process elements Y, Zr, Ba, La, Eu show obvious overabundance relative to the Sun. And Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Ni show comparable abundances to the Solar ones. The results of theoretical model of wind accretion for binary systems can explain the observed abundance patterns of the neutron capture process elements in these Ba stars, which means that their overabundant heavy-elements could be caused by accreting the ejecta of AGB stars, the progenitors of the present white dwarf companions in the binary systems.

For an extrasolar planet on an eccentric orbit, the orbital velocity is constantly changing, even during a planetary transit. This changing orbital velocity will, in general, cause lightcurve assymetry. The asymmetry causes the mid-transit time to be slightly off-centre from the halfway point between transit ingress and egress. For GJ436b, we estimate that the mid-transit time is shifted by 20 seconds. In the case of a system experiencing secular changes, this difference will lead to a long period transit time variation (L-TTV) signal, under the typical definition of the mid-transit time. In this work, we describe the origins of the effect and evaluate it in the case of GJ436b experiencing hypothetical secular changes. We predict L-TTV could be used to map secular changes in such systems.

We have studied the Raman spectroscopic signatures of nanodiamonds from the Allende meteorite in which some portions must be of presolar origin as indicated by the isotopic compositions of various trace elements. The spectra of the meteoritic nanodiamond show a narrow peak at 1326 cm−1 and a broad band at 1590 cm−1. Compared to the intensities of these peaks, the background fluorescence is relatively high. A significant frequency shift from 1332 to 1326 cm−1, peak broadening, and appearance of a new peak at 1590 cm−1 might be due to shock effects during formation of the diamond grains. Such changes may have several origins: an increase in bond length, a change in the electron density function or charge transfer, or a combination of these factors. However, Raman spectroscopy alone does not allow distinguishing between a shock origin of the nanodiamonds and formation by a CVD process as is favored by most workers.

An alternative to TRO model of a W UMa-type star is presented in which the binary is past mass exchange with mass ratio reversal. The secondary is hydrogen depleted and both components are in thermal equilibrium. Evolution in contact is driven by orbital angular momentum loss and mass transfer from the secondary to primary component, similarly as it is observed in Algols. Temperature equalization of both components results from an assumed energy transfer by a large scale flow encircling the whole system in the common envelope.

The general relativistic precession rate of periastra in close-in exoplanets can be orders of magnitude larger than the magnitude of the same effect for Mercury. The realization that some of the close-in exoplanets have significant eccentricities raises the possibility that this precession might be detectable. We explore here the observability of the periastra precession using radial velocity and transit light curve observations. Our analysis is independent of the source of precession, which can also have significant contributions due to additional planets and tidal deformations. We find that precession of the periastra of the magnitude expected from general relativity can be detectable in timescales of ≲10 years with current observational capabilities by measuring the change in the primary transit duration or in the time difference between primary and secondary transits. Radial velocity curves alone would be able to detect this precession for super-massive, close-in exoplanets orbiting inactive stars if they have ~100 datapoints at each of two epochs separated by ~20 years. The contribution to the precession by tidal deformations may dominate the total precession in cases where the relativistic precession is detectable. Studies of transit durations with Kepler might need to take into account effects arising from the general relativistic and tidal induced precession of periastra for systems containing close-in, eccentric exoplanets. Such studies may be able to detect additional planets with masses comparable to that of Earth by detecting secular variations in the transit duration induced by the changing longitude of periastron.

Ultimately, all of the solids in the Solar System, including ourselves, consist of elements that were made in stars by stellar nucelosynthesis. However, most of the material from many different stellar sources that went into the making of the Solar System was thoroughly mixed, obliterating any information about its origin. An exception are tiny grains of preserved stardust found in primitive meteorites, micrometeorites, and interplanetary dust particles. These μm- and sub-μm-sized presolar grains are recognized as stardust by their isotopic compositions, which are completely different from those of the Solar System. They condensed in outflows from late-type stars and in SN ejecta and were included in meteorites, from which they can be isolated and studied for their isotopic compositions in the laboratory. Thus these grains constitute a link between us and our stellar ancestors. They provide new information on stellar evolution, nucleosynthesis, mixing processes in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and supernovae, and galactic chemical evolution. Red giants, AGB stars, Type II supernovae, and possibly novae have been identified as stellar sources of the grains. Stardust phases identified so far include silicates, oxides such as corundum, spinel, and hibonite, graphite, silicon carbide, silicon nitride, titanium carbide, and Fe-Ni metal.

The working group is pursuing activities co-organized and/or co-sponsored by UN, ESA, NASA, JAXA, UNESCO, COSPAR, IAU and others for the world-wide development of basic space science.

We present the results of mapping the HgMn star AR Aur using the Doppler Imaging technique for several elements and discuss the obtained distributions in the framework of a magnetic field topology.

The results of a long-term time-series photometry of the short-period eclipsing binary IU Per are reported. The observation confirms the intrinsic δ Scuti-like pulsation of the star as discovered by previous authors. A photometric solution for the binary system was carried out with the new data. Based on which, the pure oscillation light variations from the mass-accreting primary component were extracted. A Fourier analysis reveals four pulsation modes. Combining with the photometric solution, a preliminary mode identification was given.

We will introduce a project using Magnetic Doppler Imaging (MDI) to create assumption-free vector magnetic field maps and chemical surface structure maps of chemically peculiar A and B type (or Ap) stars. We are exploiting the latest generation of spectropolarimeters (NARVAL at the Pic du Midi observatory, and ESPaDOnS at the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope), to obtain high-resolution time series of Stokes IQUV spectra of a selection of Ap stars. The spectra have superior signal-to-noise ratio, resolution and wavelength coverage to those used previously. This combined with the ground-breaking inversion techniques introduced by Kochukhov et al. (2002) results in maps which represent the state-of-the-art in the field of stellar cartography. These maps will allow us to better understand the links between the magnetic field and the physical processes leading to the formation of chemical structures in the photosphere and allow us to address questions surrounding the detailed magnetic field geometry of Ap stars.

The Commission 46 Program Group Exchange of Astronomers (PG-EA) provides travel grants to astronomers and advanced students for research or study trips of at least three months duration. Highest priority is given to applicants from developing countries whose visits will benefit them, their institution and country, and the institution visited. This program, if used strategically, has the potential to support other Commission 46 programs such as Teaching for Astronomical Development (PG-TAD) and World Wide Development of Astronomy (PG-WWDA). A small fraction of primitive meteorites and interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) consists of grains of presolar stardust. These grains have extremely unusual isotopic compositions, relative to all other planetary materials, indicating that they condensed in the outflows and explosions of prior generations of stars (Clayton & Nittler 2004). Identified presolar grain types include silicate, oxide and carbonaceous phases. The latter include graphitic carbon, diamond and SiC. Although many of these phases do not have a direct connection to organic chemistry, this is not true of the graphitic spherules. Many of these, with isotopic compositions indicating an origin in C-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star outflows, have a structure consisting of naonocrystalline cores surrounded by well-graphitized C (Bernatowicz et al. 1996). The cores include isotopically anomalous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Messenger et al. 1998) and represent a link between molecular chemistry and dust condensation in stellar outflows. Meteorites and IDPs also contain abundant isotopically anomalous organic matter, including distinct organic grains, some of which probably formed in stellar outflows and/or the interstellar medium (ISM) (Busemann et al. 2006, Floss et al. 2004). In some IDPs, deuterium- and 15N-enriched organic matter is closely associated with presolar silicate grains (Messenger et al. 2005, Nguyen et al. 2007), suggesting an association in the ISM prior to Solar System formation.

We present a search for Trojan companions to 25 transiting exoplanets. We use the technique of Ford & Gaudi, in which a difference is sought between the observed transit time and the transit time that is calculated by fitting a two-body Keplerian orbit to the radial-velocity data. This technique is sensitive to the imbalance of mass at the L4/L5 points of the planet-star orbit. No companions were detected. The median 2σ upper limit is 60 M⊕, and the most constraining limit is 2.5 M⊕ for the case of GJ 436.
