The anticorrelation of C and Si previously inferred from high-resolution spectroscopy of sharp-lined A stars classified as normal or mild Am is also found among the metal-deficient, more rapidly rotating λ Boo stars. The entire sample of program stars covers the range [C/Si] = − 1.14 (Sirius, mild Am star) to + 1.35 (HR 7400, λ Boo-type). Iron varies parallel with silicon. With respect to surface chemistry the λ Boo stars do not form a distinct group but rather represent the lower end in a continuous sequence of ‘metal’ abundance extending over more than 1.5 dex.

We argue that differential accretion of gas and dust in late stages of star formation or during the main-sequence phase is responsible for most of the abundance variations of the lighter elements up to the iron group. Enhanced or impeded accretion of dust leads to a metal-rich or metal-poor surface composition, respectively. The heavy trace elements Sr and Ba show additional anomalies indicating that other processes like gravitational and radiative separation are also involved.

The condensation of gas-phase molecules onto grain surfaces in cold molecular clouds is widely expected, and the presence of the resultant icy mantles well established, but quantitative study of the gas-phase depletions has not proved easy. This paper reviews the methods for determining depletions and the associated problems. Further observations are critical to testing our expectations for depletions and for the chemical evolution of forming stellar systems.

We stress the importance of Wolf-Rayet stars for the understanding of the AGN phenomenon in galaxies. WR stars provide an unique opportunity to explore from the ground whether non-thermal nuclear activity and circumnuclear starbursts are connected. We review the known reported WR signatures observed so far in AGNs and point out some intrincacies related to the analysis of the spectra, linked to reddening correction, the origin of the Hβ line, etc. Finally, we advocate that integral field spectroscopy is a very promising tool to study this problem and present preliminary results of a long-term project that have been obtained at the CFHT in 1998.

QS Vir is an eclipsing cataclysmic variable with 3.618 hrs orbital period. This system has the interesting characteristics that it does not show mass transfer between the components through the L1 Lagrangian point and shows a complex orbital period variation history. Qian et al. (2010) associated the orbital period variations to the presence of a giant planet in the system plus angular momentum loss via magnetic braking. Parsons et al. (2010) obtained new eclipse timings and observed that the orbital period variations associated to a hypothetical giant planet disagree with their measurements and concluded that the decrease in orbital period is part of a cyclic variation with period ~16 yrs. In this work, we present 28 new eclipse timings of QS Vir and suggest that the orbital period variations can be explained by a model with two circumbinary bodies. The best fitting gives the lower limit to the masses M1 sin(i) ~ 0.0086 M⊙ and M2 sin(i) ~ 0.054 M⊙; orbital periods P1 ~ 14.4 yrs and P2 ~ 16.99 yrs, and eccentricities e1 ~ 0.62 and e2~0.92 for the two external bodies. Under the assumption of coplanarity among the two external bodies and the inner binary, we obtain a giant planet with ~0.009 M⊙ and a brown dwarf with ~ 0.056 M⊙ around the eclipsing binary QS Vir.

The Small and Large Magellanic Clouds (SMC and LMC) are the nearest neighbouring galaxies. Their proximity enables us to investigate these galaxies in X-rays in fair detail.

We present chemical models of the inner circumstellar envelope of a typical carbon-rich AGB star. The effect of pulsation-driven shocks on the gas close to the stellar photosphere is considered. The chemistry of dust condensation nuclei formation is described and applied to the gas layers close to the star. We derive formation yields for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) species and their dimers and discuss their role in the condensation of dust. Models of the chemistry of silicon- and sulfur-bearing molecules in the inner envelope are also presented.

We report new estimates for the lower mass function of 5 young open clusters spanning an age range from 80 to 150 Myr. In all studied clusters, the mass function across the stellar/substellar boundary (~ 0.072 M⊙) and up to 0.4 M⊙ is consistent with a power-law with an exponent α ⋍ –0.5 ± 0.1, i.e., dN/dM ∝ M-0.5.

New photographic observations of meteors in the brightness range −5 > Mp > −18 (?) and with a median value of M = −8·5 have yielded orbits with a precision of better than 1° in the angular elements and of about 0·05 in e and 1/a. A comparison of 100 of these fireball orbits with Super-Schmidt orbits shows:

1. (1) A class of orbits, comprising about 25% of the faint meteors, of long period, is almost completely absent among the fireballs.

2. (2) Small perihelion distances (q < 0·2 AU) are not found. A maximum at q ~ 0·7 AU, which also appears in the Super-Schmidt orbits of short period, corresponds to the perihelion distances of all but two of the Apollo objects.

3. (3) The distribution of aphelia shows a marked decrease at Jupiter when compared to a similar distribution of small, faint meteor orbits. With the existing material, we cannot determine whether this represents an important evolutionary distinction between meteoroids of different mass or is simply the result of an inappropriate choice of the division between ‘large’ and ‘small’ orbits in the faint meteor data.

Provisional values of the bulk density of 28 of the fireballs as determined from the photometric mass and the observed mass-area ratio indicate that these meteoroids do not differ significantly from those observed with the Super-Schmidt cameras. Evidence of gross fragmentation of these large objects at high elevation and evidence of small or negligible terminal masses suggest that the material is friable. There is no certain evidence that any appreciable fraction of fireballs is produced by high-density, cohesive material.

If the above analysis is correct, we should expect an occasional (1 year−1 106 km−2?) meteorite fall of discoverable size originating from a low-density meteoroid.

We present an updated study of Uranus interior models using current information about the planet’s gravity field and rotation rate. The most plausible model, both from the point of view of recent data and cosmogony, has a central core of iron and magnesium silicates, an outer envelope of liquid water, methane, and ammonia, and a deep “atmosphere” of almost four earth masses of hydrogen, helium, and methane. The “atmosphere” contains a gravit at ionally nonnegligible amount of methane — about 40% by mass. All plausible models are most consistent with a rotation period of ~15 to 16 hours.

The characteristics and the generation mechanisms of solar radio outbursts seem to be distinct at the frequencies above and below a certain cross-over frequency somewhere between 300 and 600 Mc/s (see Table I).

During 2002–2003 the number of IR-identified counterparts to the Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) has grown to four (4U 0142+61, IE 2259+586, IE 1048.1−5937 and RXS J170849−400910) out of the six objects (plus two candidates) known in this class. More importantly, some new common characteristics have been identified, such as IR variability, IR flattening in the broad-band energy spectrum, X-ray spectral variability as a function of pulse phase (which are not predicted by the magnetar model), and X-ray bursts (which cannot be explained in terms of standard accretion models). We present the results obtained from an extensive multi-wavelength observational campaign carried out with the NTT and CFHT for the optical/IR bands, and XMM and Chandra (plus BeppoSAX archival data) in X-rays. Based on these results and those reported in the literature, the IR-to-X-ray emission of AXPs is compared.

The nature of MHD and hydrodynamical turbulence in accretion disks is discussed. Comparison is made with planar Couette flow, a classical system prone to nonlinear shear instability resulting in enhanced turbulent transport. Both Keplerian and non-Keplerian hydrodynamical disks are studied, and it is found that only constant angular momentum disks are unstable to nonlinear disturbances and develop enhanced turbulent transport. Convective instabilities do not lead to enhanced turbulent transport. Hydrodynamical Keplerian disks are quite stable to nonlinear disturbances. Several lines of argument are presented which all lead to this conclusion, but the key to disk turbulence is the interaction between the stress tensor and the mean flow gradients. The nature of this coupling is found to determine completely the stability properties of disks (hydrodynamics and magnetic), and the nature of turbulent transport. The weak field MHD instability, which is of great astrophysical importance, displays the same type of stress tensor – mean flow coupling that all classical local shear instabilities exhibit. Hydrodynamical Keplerian disks, on the other hand, do not. Accretion disk turbulence is MHD turbulence.

Massive stars played a key role in the early evolution of the Universe. They formed with the first halos and started the re-ionisation. It is therefore very important to understand their evolution. In this review, we first recall the effect of metallicity (Z) on the evolution of massive stars. We then describe the strong impact of rotation induced mixing and mass loss at very low Z. The strong mixing leads to a significant production of primary 14N, 13C and 22Ne. Mass loss during the red supergiant stage allows the production of Wolf-Rayet stars, type Ib,c supernovae and possibly gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) down to almost Z = 0 for stars more massive than 60 M⊙. Galactic chemical evolution models calculated with models of rotating stars better reproduce the early evolution of N/O, C/O and 12C/13C. Finally, the impact of magnetic fields is discussed in the context of GRBs.

Led by the CNES space agency the CoRoT mission is born from a joint effort of France, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Germany, Spain and ESA. In orbit around the Earth, CoRoT started its first observations in February 2007 and is, now, regularly producing ten thousand light-curves with a very high accuracy. Performances are better than expected and some Hot Jupiters have already been detected in the raw data. Once the fully corrected data will be delivered, much smaller transits should be detected giving access to the hot Neptunes and the big Terrestrial planet families. We briefly describes the status of the mission, the inflight performance and the ground based program follow up strategy. We also present some preliminary results issued from a first analysis of the data.

A cometary outburst is an unexpected flare-up in the brightness of a comet, with the brightness normally increasing by 2 to 3 magnitudes, but on occasion by up to 5. This outburst is superimposed on the general change in brightness that is related to the comet’s heliocentric and geocentric distance, spin phase, spin axis orientation and activity geography. The brightness variation during outbursts usually has an abrupt, eruptive onset followed by a quasi-exponential decrease and lasts for a few tens of days. Several cometary outbursts are accompanied by the expansion of a spherical halo from the brightest point at the centre of the visible cometary coma.

We compile most recent multiplicity fractions and binary separation distributions for different primary masses, including very low-mass and brown dwarf primaries, and compare them with dynamical decay models of small-N clusters. The model predictions are based on detailed numerical calculations of the internal cluster dynamics, as well as on Monte-Carlo methods. Both observations and models reflect the same trends: (1) The multiplicity fraction is an increasing function of the primary mass. (2) The mean binary separations are increasing with the system mass in the sense that very low-mass binaries have average separations around ≈ 4AU, while the binary separation distribution for solar-type primaries peaks at ≈ 40AU. M-type binary systems apparently preferentially populate intermediate separations. Similar specific energy at the time of cluster formation for all cluster masses can possibly explain this trend.

Planetary and lunar ephemerides are no longer used for the determination of inertial space. Instead, the new fundamental reference frame, the ICRF, is inherently less susceptible to extraneous, non-inertial rotations than would be a dynamical reference frame determined by the ephemerides. Consequently, the ephemerides are now adjusted onto the ICRF, and they are fit to two modern, accurate observational data types: ranging (radar, lunar laser, spacecraft) and VLBI (of spacecraft near planets).

The uncertainties remaining in the inner planet ephemerides are on the order of 1 kilometer, both in relative positions between the bodies and in the orientation of the inner system as a whole. The predictive capabilities of the inner planet ephemerides are limited by the uncertainties in the masses of many asteroids. For this reason, future improvements to the ephemerides must await determinations of many asteroid masses. Until then, it will be necessary to constantly update the ephemerides with a continuous supply of observational data.

The centers of galaxies host two distinct, compact components: massive black holes and nuclear star clusters. Nuclear star clusters are the densest stellar systems in the universe, with masses of ~ 107M⊙ and sizes of ~ 5pc. They are almost ubiquitous at the centres of nearby galaxies with masses similar to, or lower than the Milky Way. Their occurrence both in spirals and dwarf elliptical galaxies appears to be a strong function of total galaxy light or mass. Nucleation fractions are up to 100% for total galaxy magnitudes of MB = −19mag or total galaxy luminosities of about LB = 1010L⊙ and falling nucleation fractions for both smaller and higher galaxy masses. Although nuclear star clusters are so common, their formation mechanisms are still under debate. The two main formation scenarios proposed are the infall and subsequent merging of star clusters and the in-situ formation of stars at the center of a galaxy. Here, I review the state-of-the-art of nuclear star cluster observations concerning their structure, stellar populations and kinematics. These observations are used to constrain the proposed formation scenarios for nuclear star clusters. Constraints from observations show, that likely both cluster infall and in-situ star formation are at work. The relative importance of these two mechanisms is still subject of investigation.

A time sequence of longitudinal magnetograms of two active regions, McMath Regions 9281 and 9760, have indicated magnetic field changes occurring in localized areas with time scales of the order of hours. We believe the observed field changes are evolutionary in nature, rather than related to the occurrence of small flares. Three examples of evolutionary magnetic changes are discussed.

Supernovae are classified as type I and type II and further subdivided into Ia, Ib, Ic, II-P, II-L, and IIb. The origin of this observational diversity has not been well understood. The recent nearby supernovae SN 1993J and SN 1994I have provided particularly useful material to clarify the supernova — progenitor connection. For a progenitor of type IIb supernova 1993J, we propose that merging of two stars in a close binary is responsible for the formation of a thin H-rich envelope. As a progenitor of type Ic supernova 1994I, we propose a bare C+O star that has lost both its H and He envelope after a common-envelope phase. By generalizing these scenarios, we show that common-envelope evolution in massive close binary stars leads to various degrees of stripping off of the envelope of a massive star. This naturally leads to an explanation of the origin of type II-L, IIn, IIb, Ib, and Ic in a unified manner. The binary hypothesis to explain the diversity of supernovae can be substantiated with new information on SN IIb 1993J and SN Ic 1994I. Model light curves are compared with observations. Since extensive mass loss is essential for the binary scenario, circumstellar interactions are examined for comparison with X-ray observations.
