The VIIth catalogue of Galactic Population I Wolf-Rayet stars provides improved coordinates, spectral types and b, v, K photometry of known WR stars, and it adds 62 new WR stars to the previous WR catalogue. The present census of Galactic WR stars stands at 218, including 117 WN stars, 87 WC stars, 11 WN/WC stars and 3 WO stars.

Magnetic coupling relates the energy sources below the photosphere to the structure and dynamics of the chromosphere and corona of the Sun. Multi-wavelength investigations of the solar activity provides the information needed to understand the acting physical mechanisms. Descriptions of magnetic coupling often start with force-free mathematical extrapolations of the photospheric magnetic field. Observations have revealed, however, perpendicular electric current sheets, reconnection and other locally non-force-free structures in chromosphere and corona. Obviously, the solar magnetic coupling includes dynamic forcing due to photospheric plasma motion. We developed a model which though it starts with force-free extrapolated observed photospheric magnetic field additionally takes into account the energy input due to the chromospheric neutral gas and plasma motion. The orientation of the earth in space changes unpredictably in a rapid and irregular manner, in addition to the uniform rotation of the earth. Observations of extra-terrestrial objects from the surface of the earth are affected by these variations, and knowledge of these changes is required for a variety of geodetic and astrometric purposes as well as being of interest in its own right. The orientation of the earth (specified by a three dimensional rotation vector) is measured by a variety of techniques; combination of these data sets is complicated by irregular changes in the spacing and accuracy of the various time series, and also by the existence of lower dimensional measurements of different linear combinations of the rotation vector components. A Kalman filter has been developed at JPL to smooth and predict earth orientation changes for application to spacecraft navigation by the NASA Deep Space Network. The filter, which provides estimates of the earth orientation changes (and of the excitation of these changes) based on whatever measurements are available, has been used for a number of research applications, both in the reduction of geodetic and astrometric data, and in research into the geophysical causes of earth orientation changes. The JPL Kalman filter uses stochastic models to account statistically for otherwise unpredictable changes in earth orientation; these models make it possible to provide reasonable estimates of the error in the smoothed time series, and to automatically vary the amount of smoothing according to the accuracy and density of the data. The derivation of the stochastic models used by the filter, the implementation of the models into the filter, a statistical description of what the filter does, and the results of filtering specific data sets will be discussed.

Over the last four days, we have enjoyed a wide range of talks on developments in three dimensional spectroscopic techniques. The conference organizing committee are to be congratulated for the artful manner in which instrumental presentations were interleaved with talks on the scientific results from these instruments. The general thrust of most talks was to advance the versatility of traditional instruments either through the Jacquinot (throughput) advantage or through the multiplex advantage, or both. A number of groups have attempted to utilize the full aperture of scanning Fabry-Perot and Fourier Transform interferometers. Arguably, Fabry-Perot interferometers have a wider application at present, although imaging Fourier Transform devices appear to have finally arrived, at least in the near infrared.

This paper presents a brief review and latest results of the work that has been carried out by the Planetary Science community in order to understand the role of the geotechnical properties of granular asteroids (commonly known as “rubble-pile” asteroids) in their formation, evolution and possible disruption. As such, we will touch in aspects of the theoretical and numerical tools that have been used with this objective and how the obtained results compare to the observed asteroids.

The Sun is by far the largest reservoir of matter in the solar system and contains more than 99% of the mass of the solar system. Theories on the formation of the solar system maintain that the gravitational collapse is very efficient and that typically not more than one tenth from the solar nebula is lost during the formation process. Consequently, the Sun can be considered as a representative sample of interstellar matter taken from a well mixed reservoir 4.6 Gy ago, at about 8 kpc from the galactic center. At the same time, the Sun is also a faithful witness of the composition of matter at the beginning of the evolution of the solar system and the formation of planets, asteroids, and comets. Knowledge on the solar composition and a fair account of the related uncertainties is relevant for many fields in astrophysics, planetary sciences, cosmo- and geochemistry. Apart from the basic interest in the chemical evolution of the galaxy and the solar system, compositional studies have also led to many applications in space research, i.e., it has helped to distinguish between different components of diffuse heliospheric matter. The elemental, isotopic, and charge state composition of heliospheric particles (solar wind, interstellar neutrals, pickup ions) has been used for a multitude of applications, such as tracing the source material, constraining parameters for models of the acceleration processes, and of the transport through the interplanetary medium. It is important to realize, that the two mainstream applications, as outlined above – geochemistry and cosmochemistry on one side, and tracing of heliospheric processes on the other side – are not independent of each other. Understanding the physical processes, e.g., of the fractionation of the solar wind, is crucial for the interpretation of compositional data; on the other hand, reliable information on the source composition is the basis for putting constraints on models of the solar wind fractionation.

We review our understanding of the kinematics of the LMC and the SMC, and their orbit around the Milky Way. The line-of-sight velocity fields of both the LMC and SMC have been mapped with high accuracy using thousands of discrete traces, as well as H i gas. The LMC is a rotating disk for which the viewing angles have been well established using various methods. The disk is elliptical in its disk plane. The disk thickness varies depending on the tracer population, with V/σ ranging from ~2–10 from the oldest to the youngest population. For the SMC, the old stellar population resides in a spheroidal distribution with considerable line-of-sight depth and low V/σ. Young stars and H i gas reside in a more irregular rotating disk. Mass estimates based on the kinematics indicate that each Cloud is embedded in a dark halo. Proper motion measurements with HST show that both galaxies move significantly more rapidly around the Milky Way than previously believed. This indicates that for a canonical 1012 M⊙ Milky Way the Clouds are only passing by us for the first time. Although a higher Milky Way mass yields a bound orbit, this orbit is still very different from what has been previously assumed in models of the Magellanic Stream. Hence, much of our understanding of the history of the Magellanic System and the formation of the Magellanic Stream may need to be revised. The accuracy of the proper motion data is insufficient to say whether or not the LMC and SMC are bound to each other, but bound orbits do exist within the proper motion error ellipse.

Upcoming VLBI observations will resolve nearby supermassive black holes, most notably Sagittarius A* and M87, on event horizon-scales. Recent observations of Sagittarius A* with the Event Horizon Telescope have revealed horizon-scale structure. Accordingly, the detection and measurement of the back hole “shadow” is expected to enable the existence of astrophysical black holes to be verified directly. Although the theoretical description of the shadow is straightforward, its observational appearance is largely determined by the properties of the surrounding accretion flow, which is highly turbulent. We introduce a new polarised general-relativistic radiative transfer code, BHOSS, which accurately solves the equations of polarised radiative transfer in arbitrary strong-gravity environments, providing physically-realistic images of astrophysical black holes on event horizon-scales, as well as also providing insight into the fundamental properties and nature of the surrounding accretion flow environment.

As an introduction to the symposium the related problems of the distances, structures and chemical compositions of the Magellanic Clouds are reviewed.

The Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) coming up near Pune, India will be one of the important instruments for pulsar research work at metre wavelengths. Here we describe the capabilities of the GMRT for pulsar work and give the current status of the telescope in this context. Results from recent test observations are also summarised.

We present a simple, physically-motivated model to interpret consistently the emission from galaxies at ultraviolet, optical and infrared wavelengths. We combine this model with a Bayesian method to obtain robust statistical constraints on key parameters describing the stellar content, star formation activity and dust content of galaxies. Our model is now publicly available via a user-friendly code package, MAGPHYS at www.iap.fr/magphys. We present an application of this model to interpret a sample of ~1400 local (z<0.5) galaxies from the H-ATLAS survey. We find that, for these galaxies, the diffuse interstellar medium, powered mainly by stars older than 10 Myr, accounts for about half the total infrared luminosity. We discuss the implications of this result to the use of star formation rate indicators based on total infrared luminosity.

A comprehensive overview of the $\lambda$ Bootis stars is presented. This small group (only a maximum of 2% of all objects in the relevant spectral domain) are Population I late B to early F-type stars, with moderate to extreme (up to a factor 100) surface underabundances of most Fe-peak elements and solar abundances of lighter elements (C, N, O, and S). They form a separate group among the classical chemically peculiar objects of the upper Main Sequence as their underabundances are quite outstanding. The basic membership criteria as well as the theories to explain the $\lambda$ Bootis phenomenon are covered. New observations including detailed elemental (surface) abundances, tests for pulsational instability, fluxes in the IR region, and measurements from the Hipparcos satellite permit one to make a statistical sound analysis of the group properties. We estimate near-surface flows using the techniques of f-mode time-distance helioseismology together with MDI/SOHO data. (1) Synoptic maps of horizontal flows are obtained for 1996, 1998 and 1999. Rotation, torsional oscillations and meridional circulation are measured. We detect weak large-scale flows converging toward active regions. Travel times are found to be shorter at locations of high magnetic activity. In addition, we measure the motion of the supergranulation pattern. (2) Realistic travel-time sensitivity kernels are used in an iterative deconvolution to infer horizontal flows at a high spatial resolution. The radial outflow outside a sunspot penumbra, called the moat, is measured.

Gaia is an ambitious space astrometry mission of ESA with a main objective to map the sky in astrometry and photometry down to a magnitude 20 by the end of the next decade. While the mission is built and operated by ESA and an industrial consortium, the data processing is entrusted to a consortium formed by the scientific community, which was formed in 2006 and formally selected by ESA one year later. The satellite will downlink around 100 TB of raw telemetry data over a mission duration of 5 years from which a very complex iterative processing will lead to the final science output: astrometry with a final accuracy of a few tens of microarcseconds, epoch photometry in wide and narrow bands, radial velocity and spectra for the stars brighter than 17 mag. We discuss the general principles and main difficulties of this very large data processing and present the organization of the European Consortium responsible for its design and implementation.

Ion-neutral chemistry in Titan's upper atmosphere (~ 1000 km altitude) is an unexpectedly prodigious source of hydrocarbon-nitrile compounds. We report observations from the Cassini Ion Neutral Mass Spectrometer (INMS; Waite et al. 2004) and Cassini Plasma Spectrometer (CAPS; Young et al. 2004) that allow us to follow the formation of the organic material from the initial ionization and dissociation of nitrogen and methane driven by several free energy sources (extreme ultraviolet radiation and energetic ions and electrons) to the formation of negative ions with masses exceeding 10,000 amu.

I review the observational side of the present state of the debate about the dark matter in galaxies, with emphasis on the core/cusp problem in low surface brightness galaxies, and the question of maximum/sub-maximum disks in spiral galaxies. Some remarks are made about the dwarf spheroidals around the Milky Way, and about elliptical galaxies.

Meteoroids observed to disintegrate in the terrestrial atmosphere can be directly linked to their parent bodies in case that they belong to certain meteor showers. We present a list of two dozens of parent bodies reliably associated with well recognized meteor showers. Among the parent bodies are long period comets, Halley-type comets, Jupiter family comets, comets of the inner solar system (such as 2P/Encke) and asteroids. Physical and chemical properties of meteoroids coming from various parents are compared on the basis of meteor heights, decelerations, light curves and spectra. Jupiter family comets produce meteoroids with the lowest strength, namely porous aggregates of dust grains with bulk densities of about 0.3 g cm−3 or less. Halley type material is somewhat stronger and the material related to comet Encke is even stronger. In addition, small strong constituents, perhaps similar to carbonaceous chondrites, can be encountered within the normal cometary material. The strength of cometary material is also enhanced by long-term exposure to cosmic rays and by solar heating in the vicinity to the Sun (r<0.2 AU). Both these processes lead to the loss of volatile sodium. Southern δ-Aquariids, Geminids and partly also Quadrantids were influenced by solar radiation. We argue that these showers, the asteroids associated with them ((3200) Phaethon and 2003 EH1), and the whole interplanetary complexes they belong to are of cometary origin. The argument is supported by lower than chondritic Fe/Mg ratio found in Geminids as well as in Halley type comets. The typical property of stony meteoroids of asteroidal origin is the presence of internal cracks which cause that the incoming meteoroids are much weaker than the recovered meteorites.

We investigate the outcome of collisions of Ceres-sized planetesimals composed of a rocky core and a shell of water ice. These collisions are not only relevant for explaining the formation of planetary embryos in early planetary systems, but also provide insight into the formation of asteroid families and possible water transport via colliding small bodies. Earlier studies show characteristic collision velocities exceeding the bodies' mutual escape velocity which—along with the distribution of the impact angles—cover the collision outcome regimes ‘partial accretion’, ‘erosion’, and ‘hit-and-run’ leading to different expected fragmentation scenarios. Existing collision simulations use bodies composed of strengthless material; we study the distribution of fragments and their water contents considering the full elasto-plastic continuum mechanics equations also including brittle failure and fragmentation.

We discuss practical aspects of the novel Faraday Rotation Measure Synthesis technique, first described by Burn (1966), and recently extended and implemented by Brentjens & de Bruyn (2005). The method takes advantage of the excellent spectral coverage provided by modern radio telescopes to reconstruct the intrinsic polarization properties along a line of sight, using a Fourier relationship between the observed polarization products and a function describing the intrinsic polarization (the Faraday dispersion function). An important consequence of the Fourier relationship and discrete frequency sampling is the need, in some cases, to deconvolve the sampling response from the reconstructed Faraday dispersion function. Practical aspects of the deconvolution procedure are discussed. We illustrate the use of the technique by summarizing a recent investigation carried out with the WSRT. We conclude by briefly describing the applicability to future programs which will be carried out with the next generation of radio telescopes such as LOFAR.
