Inclusions of one type of meteorite enclosed in another have been found in several gas-rich meteorites, unequilihrated chondrites and mesosiderites. The inclusions in all but one case are chondritic; a majority are mineralogically and isotopically similar to carbonaceous chondrites. These meteorite mixtures most probably resulted from collisions among asteroids.

We present an extensive summary of the position, redshift, and flux data on the secure, multiply imaged, quasar and radio lenses. It includes neither the less-promising (in the opinion of the author) lens candidates nor the cluster lenses (which are too hard to reduce to short tables of numbers). Gaia is an ambitious space astrometry mission of ESA with a main objective to map the sky in astrometry and photometry down to a magnitude 20 by the end of the next decade. Given its extreme astrometric accuracy and the repeated observations over five years, the observation modelling is done in a fully relativistic framework and several tests of General Relativity or of its extensions can be carried out during the data processing. The paper presents an overview of the current activities in this area and of the expected performances.

We started (sub-)millimeter continuum and line studies of entire molecular cloud complexes located at intermediate distances from the Sun (1–3 kpc). Such an unbiased approach allows to identify and characterize the earliest phases of high-mass stars overlooked by IRAS or MSX. Our complete MAMBO-2 surveys of the Cygnus X and NGC 7538 complexes reveal a large population of ${\sim} 0.1$ pc-size massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) harboring high-mass infrared-quiet protostars. The determination of the nature of all the new millimeter sources is still in progress but we have already collected evidence that the infrared-quiet (or class 0-like) protostellar phase might last as long as the better-known infrared-bright protostellar phase. Besides, our complete census of MYSOs fails to discover the high-mass analogues of pre-stellar dense cores. We propose that the observed lower-density pre-stellar clumps (${>} 1$ pc) rapidly concentrate and collapse as also found in the kinematical studies of other prominent clumps. Indeed, CS and HCO$^+$ mappings in W43 and Cygnus X suggest global supersonic contraction with inward velocities of several km s−1 on parsec scales. Our work and similar studies of entire star-forming complexes will thus definitively contribute to a better knowledge of the earliest phases of high-mass star formation.

The HARPS search for low-mass extrasolar planets has been ongoing for more than 4 years, targeting originally about 400 bright FGK dwarfs in the solar neighbourhood. The published low-mass planetary systems coming from this survey are fully confirmed by subsequent observations, which demonstrate the sub-m/s long-term stability reached by HARPS. The complex RV curves of these systems have led us to focus on a smaller sample of stars, accumulating more data points per star. We perform a global search in our data to assess the existence of the large population of ice giants and super-Earths predicted by numerical simulations of planet formation. We indeed detect about 45 candidates having minimum masses below 30 M⊕ and orbital periods below 50 days. These numbers are preliminary since the existence of these objects has to be confirmed by subsequent observations. However, they indicate that about 30% of solar-type stars may have such close-in, low-mass planets. Some emerging properties of this low-mass population are presented. We finally discuss the prospects for finding transiting objects among these candidates, which may possibly yield the first nearby, transiting super-Earth.

The estimation of molecular abundances in interstellar clouds from spectroscopic observations requires radiative transfer calculations, which depend on basic molecular input data. This paper reviews recent developments in the fields of molecular data and radiative transfer. The first part is an overview of radiative transfer techniques, along with a “road map” showing which technique should be used in which situation. The second part is a review of measurements and calculations of molecular spectroscopic and collisional data, with a summary of recent collisional calculations and suggested modeling strategies if collision data are unavailable. The paper concludes with an overview of future developments and needs in the areas of radiative transfer and molecular data.

An increasing number of photometric observations of multiple stellar populations in Galactic globular clusters is seriously challenging the paradigm of GCs hosting single, simple stellar populations. These multiple populations manifest themselves in a split of different evolutionary sequences as observed in the cluster color-magnitude diagrams. Multiple stellar populations have been identified in Galactic and Magellanic Cloud clusters. In this paper we will summarize the observational scenario.

A study of asteroid orbits is made to determine if there exist groupings of similar orbits in the asteroid population. A computer program based on Southworth's D criterion for similarity in meteor orbits is used. The program successfully sorted out the asteroid families listed by Hirayama, Brouwer, and van Houten et al. A number of new families were detected, several of which appear to be more significant than the minor Brouwer families. Asteroidal streams (jetstreams) are studied and a list of such streams is presented.

Observational constraints on the form of the high-mass stellar IMF are reviewed. The evidence includes star counts in the solar neighborhood, individual and composite star clusters, and nearby galaxies, and arguments based on integrated light and chemical evolution modeling. There is no convincing evidence for any systematic variations of the shape of the high-mass IMF. However, the various determinations are very uncertain, and do not allow any firm estimate of the logarithmic slope of the upper IMF; the appropriate value is somewhere between −1.3 and −2.3, with region-to-region variations smaller than about ±0.5. A number of lines of evidence suggest that the lower mass limit or mode mass of the IMF increases with increasing star formation rate, reaching perhaps 10–15 m⊙ in some starburst galaxies. It is also possible that the upper mass limit depends on metallicity, based on variations in excitation conditions of HII regions.

The determination of effective temperatures of very hot central stars (Teff > 70 000 K) by model atmosphere analyses of optical H and He line profiles is afflicted with considerable uncertainty, primarily due to the lack of neutral helium lines. Ionization balances of metals, accessible only with UV lines, allow more precise temperature estimates. The potential of iron lines is pointed out. At the same time iron and other metal abundances, hardly investigated until today, may be derived from UV spectra. We describe recent HST spectroscopy performed for this purpose.

A search for iron lines in FUV spectra of the hottest H-deficient central stars (PG1159-type, Teff >100000 K) taken with FUSE was unsuccessful. The derived deficiency is interpreted in terms of iron depletion due to n-capture nucleosynthesis in intershell matter, which is now exposed at the stellar surface as a consequence of a late He shell flash.

Detection of intrinsic solar variability on the total flux level was made using results from the first Active Radiometer Irradiance Monitor (ACRIM) experiment, launched on the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) in early 1980. ACRIM I, specifically designed to start the high precision total solar irradiance database as part of the U.S. Climate Research Program, produced high precision results throughout the 9.75 years of the Solar Maximum Mission. The second ACRIM experiment was flown aboard the Space Shuttle as part of the NASA/ESA Spacelab 1 Mission in late 1983. Its primary function has been to provide a comparison with ACRIM I that could be used to relate its observations with future satellite solar monitors, should they and ACRIM I fail to overlap in time. The second ACRIM satellite solar monitoring experiment (ACRIM II) has provided high precision total solar irradiance observations since its launch as part of the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) mission in late 1991 and continues at present. The shuttle ACRIM instrumentation has been flown on the ATLAS 1 and 2 missions in 1992 and 1993, providing comparisons with the UARS/ACRIM II.

We present a set of star cluster integrated spectra based on observations from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared. Mean template spectra were built following a ranking of clusters according to age and metallicity, which were taken from recent studies and put on consistent scales. The complete spectral database including star clusters, galaxies and stars (templates and individuals) is available through the CDS.

Many binary star systems are not wide enough to contain the progenitor stars from which they were made. One explanation for this is that when one star becomes a red giant a common envelope forms around both stars in the binary system. The core of the giant and its companion star continue to orbit one another inside the envelope. Frictional energy deposited into the common envelope may lead to its ejection and, if so, a close binary system is formed from the core of the former giant star and its relatively untouched companion. When the primary is an asymptotic giant branch star the core becomes a hot carbon-oxygen white dwarf which may ionise the ejected envelope and illuminate a planetary nebula. Many other types of binary systems form through common envelope evolution such as low-mass X-ray binaries and cataclysmic variables. In the case of a failed envelope ejection when the cores merge, rapidly-rotating solitary giants similar to FK Comae stars form. In this short review we focus on attempts to constrain parameters of common envelope evolution models and also describe the latest efforts to model this elusive phase of binary stellar evolution.

The Arcturus moving group is a well-populated example of phase space substructure within the disk of our Galaxy. With its large rotational lag (V = −100 kms−1), metal poor nature ([Fe/H] ~ −0.6) and significant age (10 Gyr) it belongs to the Galaxy's thick disk. Traditionally regarded as the remains of a dissolved open cluster, it has recently been suggested to be a remnant of a satellite accreted by our Galaxy.

We confirm via further kinematic studies using the Nordstöm et al. (2004), Schuster et al. (2004) and RAdial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) surveys (Steinmetz et al. 2004) the existence of the group, finding it to possibly favour negative U velocities and also possibly a solar-circle phenomenon. We undertook a high-resolution spectroscopic abundance study of Arcturus group members and candidates to investigate the origin of the group. Examining abundance of Fe, Mg, Ca, Ti, Cr, Ni, Zn, Ce, Nd, Sm and Gd for 134 stars we found that the group is chemically similar to disk stars and does not exhibit a clear chemical homogeneity.

The origin of the group still remains unresolved: the chemical results are consistent with a dynamical origin but do not entirely rule out a merger one. Certainly, the Arcturus group provides a challenge to our understanding of the nature and origin of the Galaxy's thick disk.

We explore the properties of sound and human sound recognition as a means to enhance and accelerate visual-only data analysis methods. The aim of this work is to enable and improve the analysis of large data sets, data requiring rapid analysis, multi-dimensional data, and signal detection in data with low signal-to-noise ratio. We present a prototype tool, StarSound, to sonify data such as astronomical transient light curves, spectra, and power spectra. Stereophonic sound is used to ‘visualise’ and localise the data under examination, and 3-D sound is discussed in conjunction with virtual reality technology, as a means to enhance analysis efficiency and efficacy, including rapid data assessment and training machine learning software. In addition, we explore the use of higher-order harmonics as a means to examine simultaneously multi-dimensional data sets. Such an approach can allow the data to be interpreted in a holistic manner and facilitates the discovery of previously unseen connections and relationships. Furthermore, we exploit the capability of the human brain for selective or focused hearing that enables the identification of desired signals in noisy data, or amidst similar or more significant signals. Finally, we provide research examples that benefit directly from data sonification. The work presented here aims to help tackle the challenges of the upcoming era of Big Data and help optimise, speed up and expand aspects of data analysis requiring human interaction.

P/1996 N2 Elst-Pizarro was discovered with a tail of dust in July 1996 and was thus classified as periodic comet. From the orbit point of view it belongs to the outer asteroid belt and is very likely a member of the Themis family, a group of bodies originating from an asteroid collision.

The absence of a coma and the presence of the needle-like anti-tail in August 1996 did not exclude the possibility of a sudden emission event which could have been caused by the impact of another minor body on the object. However, with the development of a normal tail between September and November 1996 it became obvious that the dust emission episode continued at least for 2 months after perihelion, a scenario that is typical for gas-driven cometary activity. However, it is still possible that a collision triggered the event.

The paper summarizes the observational pro and cons for impact-induced activity in this object, possibly the first ever detected comet-asteroid of the solar system.

Maser emission from the OH, H2O, and CH3OH molecules is found toward hundreds of molecular cloud cores with recent and on-going star formation. The often very high intensities of the observed emission imply substantial abundances of the maser molecules, which are difficult or impossible to explain with ion-molecule gas phase chemistry. We summarize relevant observations which show that OH and Class II CH3OH masers form in the envelopes of ultracompact HII regions in which the high abundances of these molecules are produced by evaporation of methanol and water from icy dust grain mantles. In contrast, H2O masers form in outflows from protostellar objects, where high H2O abundances are produced by endothermic neutral-neutral reactions in hot postshock gas. Finally, we briefly discuss Class I CH3OH masers, which also arise in interstellar outflows.

The characteristic signature of Be Stars is the Balmer line emission understood to arise in a circumstellar disk. Unlike the accretion disks of protostars or mass-exchange binary systems, the evolved and generally single or wide-binary status of Be Stars seems to require that its disk must form from mass ejection (a.k.a. decretion) from the star itself. In this paper, I use analogies with launching orbital satellites to discuss two candidate processes (radiation, pulsation) for driving such orbital mass ejection, with particular emphasis on the role of the rapid, possibly near-critical, rotation of Be Stars in facilitating the formation of their signature disks.

Low-mass X-ray binaries, recycled pulsars, cataclysmic variables and magnetically active binaries are observed as X-ray sources in globular clusters. We discuss the classification of these systems, and find that some presumed active binaries are brighter than expected. We discuss a new statistical method to determine from observations how the formation of X-ray sources depends on the number of stellar encounters and/or on the cluster mass. We show that cluster mass is not a proxy for the encounter number, and that optical identifications are essential in proving the presence of primordial binaries among the low-luminosity X-ray sources.

Magnetic coupling relates the energy sources below the photosphere to the structure and dynamics of the chromosphere and corona of the Sun. Multi-wavelength investigations of the solar activity provides the information needed to understand the acting physical mechanisms. Descriptions of magnetic coupling often start with force-free mathematical extrapolations of the photospheric magnetic field. Observations have revealed, however, perpendicular electric current sheets, reconnection and other locally non-force-free structures in chromosphere and corona. Obviously, the solar magnetic coupling includes dynamic forcing due to photospheric plasma motion. We developed a model which though it starts with force-free extrapolated observed photospheric magnetic field additionally takes into account the energy input due to the chromospheric neutral gas and plasma motion.
