We have observed Arp 270 using the GHαFaS Fabry-Perot spectrometer on the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope (La Palma). In the edge-on companion we detect a radial gas inflow of ∼ 0.36 M⊙/yr to the centre and also an axially confined outflow of ∼ 0.24 M⊙/yr from the nucleus in two opposing directions. We find two different behaviors between the physical properties of the HII regions. We suggest as a possible explanation a sub and supersonic regime.

In the absence of any form of feedback heating, the gas in the central regions of massive relaxed cluster should cool and initiate a cooling flow. The presence/efficiency of an additional heating and the ultimate fate of the cooling gas is the subject of an extensive debate. In the last decade, molecular and atomic gas have been found in many Brightest Cluster Galaxies. I will review these observational results and discuss their implication for galaxy formation/evolution, in the perspective of ALMA.

Observing galaxies in the radio and submillimeter continuum has the advantage of being unaffected by dust extinction, which is a major drawback of studying galaxy evolution using optical data. Submillimeter single-dish surveys have made tremendous progress in understanding the high-redshift dusty population, but the low angular resolution of single-dish telescopes has also hampered these studies. Our recent JCMT and SMA imaging of high-redshift submillimeter sources revealed z > 4 objects that are radio and optically faint. Such objects cannot be easily identified with the combination of submillimeter single-dish and radio imaging. We also found a large fraction of multiple objects that are blended in single-dish images. Such objects may be early-stage mergers, or dusty starbursts in group environments. Since our work, larger surveys with PdBI and ALMA have been carried out to further address these issues. Additional to submillimeter imaging, future ultradeep EVLA imaging at 20 cm can also detect large samples of ultraluminous star forming galaxies at z ≳ 2. Sensitivities in radio and submillimeter observations have different redshift and dust temperature dependencies. Radio observations are also less affected by confusion. It will be necessary to combine deep surveys in both wavebands in order to achieve a more complete picture of the evolution of high-redshift star forming galaxies.

We explore the connection between black hole growth at the center of obscured quasars selected from the XMM-COSMOS survey and the physical properties of their host galaxies. We study a bolometric regime (<Lbol> ∼ 8 × 1045 erg s−1) where several theoretical models invoke major galaxy mergers as the main fueling channel for black hole accretion. To derive robust estimates of the host galaxy properties, we use an SED fitting technique to distinguish the AGN and host galaxy emission. We find that at z ∼ 1, ≈ 62% of Type-2 QSOs hosts are actively forming stars and that their rates are comparable to those measured for normal star-forming galaxies. The fraction of star-forming hosts increases with redshift: ≈ 71% at z ∼ 2, and 100% at z ∼ 3. We also find that the evolution from z ∼ 1 to z ∼ 3 of the specific star-formation rate of the Type-2 QSO hosts is in excellent agreement with that measured for star-forming galaxies.

We have been carrying out a systematic survey of the star formation and ISM properties in the host galaxies of z∼6 quasars. Our 250 GHz observations, together with available data from the literature, yield a sample of 14 z∼6 quasars that are bright in millimeter dust continuum emission with estimated FIR luminosities of a few 1012 to 1013 L⊙. Most of these millimeter-detected z∼6 quasars have also been detected in molecular CO line emission, indicating molecular gas masses on order of 1010 M⊙. We have searched for [C II] 158 micron fine structure line emission toward four of the millimeter bright z∼6 quasars with ALMA and all of them have been detected. All these results suggest massive star formation at rates of about 600 to 2000 M⊙ yr−1 over the central few kpc region of these quasar host galaxies.

Recent targeted studies of associated H i absorption in radio galaxies are starting to map out the location, and potential cosmological evolution, of the cold gas in the host galaxies of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). The observed 21 cm absorption profiles often show two distinct spectral-line components: narrow, deep lines arising from cold gas in the extended disc of the galaxy, and broad, shallow lines from cold gas close to the AGN (e.g. Morganti et al. 2011). Here, we present results from a targeted search for associated H i absorption in the youngest and most recently-triggered radio AGN in the local universe (Allison et al. 2012b). So far, by using the recently commissioned Australia Telescope Compact Array Broadband Backend (CABB; Wilson et al. 2011), we have detected two new absorbers and one previously-known system. While two of these show both a broad, shallow component and a narrow, deep component (see Fig. 1), one of the new detections has only a single broad, shallow component. Interestingly, the host galaxies of the first two detections are classified as gas-rich spirals, while the latter is an early-type galaxy. These detections were obtained using a spectral-line finding method, based on Bayesian inference, developed for future large-scale absorption surveys (Allison et al. 2012a).

SHARDS (Survey for High-z Absorption Red & Dead Sources; see Pérez-González et al. 2012) is an optical ultra-deep spectro-photometric survey with OSIRIS-GTC aimed at selecting and studying massive passively evolving galaxies at z=1.0–2.3 in GOODS-North. Nonetheless, the data quality allow a plethora of studies on galaxy populations, including Emission Line Galaxies (ELGs) about which we have started our first science verification project. The selection procedure, measurement and first analysis of ELGs in SHARDS, demonstrate the huge capability of the survey in providing physical information for a large sample of emitters, spanning from local Hα to high-z Lyman-α emitters.

GRBs are the most luminous events in the Universe. They are detectable from local to high-z universe and may serve as probes for high-z galaxies (e.g., Savaglio et al. 2009; Kewley & Dopita 2002). We compile the observations for 61 GRB host galaxies from literature. Their redshifts range from 0.0085 to 6.295. We present the statistical properties of the GRB host galaxies, including the stellar mass (M*), star-forming rate (SFR), metallicity (Z), extinction (AV), and neutral hydrogen column density (NH). We explore possible correlations among the properties of gamma-ray burst host galaxies and their cosmic evolution with observations of 61 GRB host galaxies. Our results are shown in Figure 1. A clear Z-M* relation is found in our sample, which is Z ~ M0.4. The host galaxies of local GRBs with detection of accompanied supernovae also share the same relation with high-z GRB host galaxies. A trend that a more massive host galaxy tends to have a higher star-formation rate is found. The best linear fit gives a tentative relation, i.e, SFR ~ M0.75. No any correlation is found between AV and NH. A GRB host galaxy at a higher redshift also tends to have a higher SFR. Even in the same redshift, the SFR may vary over three orders of magnitude. The metallicity of the GRB host galaxies is statistically higher than that of the QSO DLAs. The full version of our results please refer to Chen et al. (2012).

We investigated the connection between AGN and star formation (SF) activities of various kinds of AGNs and their host galaxies. In order to probe SF activity, we measured the 3.3 μm PAH emission luminosity utilizing the slitless spectroscopic capability of AKARI space telescope. We present the results from two missions, ASCSG and LQSONG.

We present detections of spatially resolved CO(J = 2→1) and CO(J = 3→2) emission, respectively, from the lensed submillimeter (submm) galaxies (SMGs), ID 9 (z = 1.577) and ID 17b (z = 2.308), found in the Science Demonstration Phase (SDP) of the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS, www.h-atlas.org). The detections were obtained using the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA, www.mmarray.org) and confirm redshifts of the lensed galaxies. We exploit the CARMA data together with existing high-J observations, to determine, among other physical properties of the lensed SMGs, the CO line luminosities, brightness temperature ratios, gas masses, and spatial sizes.

Merging, resulting from galaxy interaction and collision, is one essential scenario to interpret the distinct evolutionary stages of galaxy formation. However AGNs are believed to play an essential role towards the final stages of this scenario, in particular to clear the galaxy from a large excess of dust. Selecting galaxies with both 70μm and X-ray detection will help to understand the relation between star formation and AGN. We are taking advantage of the extensive multi-wavelength coverage of the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) field to dissect the AGN influence on infrared luminous objects. We demonstrate that enhanced star formation is more probably responsible for additional obscuration of the central AGN than the dust torus, in agreement with current galaxy formation theory. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the presence of an AGN does not increase the galaxy dust temperature significantly.

Exploring potential links between the internal physical processes of galaxies with respect to their external morphologies can reveal connections between past and present populations. One primary physical driver of galaxy evolution is star formation, which is directly detected from UV emission. Here, we summarize a study investigating the optical and UV morphologies of rest-frame UV-detected star-forming galaxies at intermediate redshifts (0.1<z<1.2) observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Solar Blind Channel (far-UV) and Wide Field PlanetaryCamera 2 (WFPC2; U-band) in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey fields.

We present initial results from adaptive optics deep imaging in the Ks-band of QSO UM402 (zem=2.856), with the IRCS camera on Subaru telescope.

It has been suggested that the CO line width (FWHM(CO)) is a surrogate for the bulge velocity dispersion (σ) of the host galaxies of high-redshift quasars, and the black hole – bulge (M−σ) relation obtained with this assumption departs significantly from the M−σ relation in the local universe. Based on an investigation of the correlation between the CO line width and the bulge velocity dispersion using a sample of 33 nearby Seyfert galaxies, we find that the formula adopted in previous studies, σ=FWHM(CO)/2.35, is generally not a good approximation. By involving the galactic inclination angle i as an additional parameter, we obtain a tight correlation between the inclination-corrected CO line width and the bulge velocity dispersion, namely, FWHM(CO)/sin i=−67.16±80.18+(3.62±0.68)σ. Using this new relation, we can better estimate the bulge velocity dispersion from the CO line width if the galactic inclination is known. We apply this new relation to nine high-redshift quasars with CO line detections and find that they are consistent with the local M−σ relation if their inclination angles are around 15°. The possible smaller inclinations of the high-redshift quasars are preferred because of their relatively greater likelihood of detection, and are also consistent with their relatively smaller CO line widths compared to the submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) at high redshift having a similar total amount of molecular gas.

Studying the molecular phase of the interstellar medium in galaxies is fundamental for the understanding of the onset and evolution of star formation and the growth of supermassive black holes. We can use molecules as observational tools exploiting them as tracers of chemical, physical and dynamical conditions. In this short review, key molecules (e.g. HCN, HCO+, HNC, HC3N, CN, H3O+) in identifying the nature of buried activity and its evolution are discussed including some standard astrochemical scenarios. Furthermore, we can use IR excited molecular emission to probe the very inner regions of luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) allowing us to get past the optically thick dust barrier of the compact obscured nuclei, e.g. in the dusty LIRG NGC4418. High resolution studies are often necessary to separate effects of excitation and radiative transport from those of chemistry - one example is absorption and effects of stimulated emission in the ULIRG Arp220. Finally, molecular gas in large scale galactic outflows is briefly discussed.

Results from a large, multi-J CO, 13CO, and HCN line survey of Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs: LIR≥ 1010 L⊙) in the local Universe (z≤0.1), complemented by CO J=4–3 up to J=13–12 observations from the Herschel Space Observatory (HSO), paints a new picture for the average conditions of the molecular gas of the most luminous of these galaxies with turbulence and/or large cosmic ray (CR) energy densities UCR rather than far-UV/optical photons from star-forming sites as the dominant heating sources. Especially in ULIRGs (LIR>1012 L⊙) the Photon Dominated Regions (PDRs) can encompass at most a few % of their molecular gas mass while the large UCR∼ 103 UCR, Galaxy, and the strong turbulence in these merger/starbursts, can volumetrically heat much of their molecular gas to Tkin∼ (100-200) K, unhindered by the high dust extinctions. Moreover the strong supersonic turbulence in ULIRGs relocates much of their molecular gas at much higher average densities (≥104 cm−3) than in isolated spirals (∼ 102–103 cm−3). This renders low-J CO lines incapable of constraining the properties of the bulk of the molecular gas in ULIRGs, with substantial and systematic underestimates of its mass possible when only such lines are used. Finally a comparative study of multi-J HCN lines and CO SLEDs from J=1–0 up to J=13–12 of NGC 6240 and Arp 193 offers a clear example of two merger/starbursts whose similar low-J CO SLEDs, and LIR/LCO,1−0 and LHCN, 1−0/LCO,1-0 ratios (proxies of the so-called SF efficiency and dense gas mass fraction), yield no indications about their strongly diverging CO SLEDs beyond J=4–3, and ultimately the different physical conditions in their molecular ISM. The much larger sensitivity of ALMA and its excellent site in the Atacama desert now allows the observations necessary to assess the dominant energy sources of the molecular gas and its mass in LIRGs without depending on the low-J CO lines.

Line emissions of high- and low-density molecular tracers serve as powerful diagnostic tools for the ISM in both Galactic and extragalactic star formation environments. The emission line strengths and line ratios may be interpreted using detailed modeling of both the dominant physics and the chemistry of the molecular constituents. Observed molecular line ratios will thus reveal the signatures of dominant UV, X-ray, and CR radiation fields and of mechanical heating and feedback from the star formation process. In addition, certain line ratios reflect the physical and chemical changes resulting from the time-evolution of a star formation region. In this paper, we present results of Galactic sources and extragalactic starbursts covering a large range of FIR luminosities and illustrate the similarities between the diagnostics of these environments.

We present a summary of the physical and chemical properties we have obtained for the molecular gas found in galaxies, an essential triggering ingredient to any star formation (SF) process. In particular, we focus our studies on the molecular gas phases as traced by CO, HCO+ and CS line emissions, in a sample of galaxies including starbursts -SBs-, irregulars galaxies, low-metallicity sources, normal spirals, mergers, Early Type Galaxies (ETGs), galaxies with an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN), with Cosmic Ray Dominated Regions (CRDRs) and with Photo-Dominated Regions (PDRs). Our studies mix theoretical developments (i.e. computational models) with the acquisition of large observational datatsets (at both low and high spatial resolution) that we then compare in order to better determine the conditions under which some SF activity is starting and/or is maintained.

The Herschel/HIFI absorption spectroscopy surveys reveal the unexpected molecular richness of the Galactic diffuse ISM, even in gas of very low average H2 molecular fraction. In particular, two hydrides, CH+ and SH+ with highly endoergic formation routes have abundances that challenge models of UV-driven chemistry. The intermittent dissipation of turbulence appears as a plausible additional source of energy for the diffuse ISM chemistry. We present recent results of the so-called models of Turbulent Dissipation Regions (TDR). The abundances of many of the molecules observed in the diffuse ISM, including CO that is used as a tracer of the molecular cloud mass, may be understood in the framework of the TDR models.

In the last decade large surveys have allowed us to separate the atomic and molecular phases of the interstellar media in a wide variety of galaxies, and to determine how each of these phases correlates with star formation. The most striking results of these observations have been that the transition from H i to H2 occurs at a characteristic gas column density that depends on metallicity, and that star formation correlates primarily with the molecular phase. These observations have stimulated a burst of theoretical work, which I review here. The work can be broken into three primary questions: what physical mechanisms control the H i to H2 transition? Why does star formation correlate with H2 and not with some other phase of the ISM? Finally, what are the implications of the answers to the previous two questions for our understanding of star formation on the cosmological scale? I discuss our current best answers to each of these questions, and conclude with prospects for future work.
