In an earlier paper, which this note is intended to supplement and in some respects improve, the writer gave a general theorem of duality relating to isobaric determinants with elements Cr and Hr, the elementary and the complete homogeneous symmetric functions of a set of variables. The result was shewn to include as special cases the dual forms of “bi-alternant” symmetric functions given by Jacobi and Naegelsbach, as well as two equivalent forms of isobaric determinant used by MacMahon as a generating function in an important problem of permutations.

In a recent paper Einstein has proposed a new type of geometry in which it is possible to give an arbitrary vector in the field a displacement which conserves parallelism at a distance. It may be briefly stated as follows:

The following pages continue a line of enquiry begun in a work On Differentiating a Matrix, (Proceedings of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society (2) 1 (1927), 111-128), which arose out of the Cayley operator , where xij is the ijth element of a square matrix [xij] of order n, and all n2 elements are taken as independent variables. The present work follows up the implications of Theorem III in the original, which stated that

where s (Xr) is the sum of the principal diagonal elements in the matrix Xr. This is now written ΩsXr = rXr – 1 and Ωs is taken as a fundamental operator analogous to ordinary differentiation, but applicable to matrices of any finite order n.

§ 1. It is well known that, if , the convergence of sn to a limit implies the convergence of tn to the same limit. The converse theorem, that the convergence of tn implies the convergence of sn, is false. Mercer1 proved, however, that if , then both sn and tn tend to l. This theorem has recently been extended in various directions.2 In the present note the case of Abel limits is considered.

The term “flat” is used to indicate that the minimum modulus of a function in a region is (in some sense) of the same order as the maximum modulus. Some properties concerned with this notion are described below. They came to light during an attempt to answer a question put to me by Professor Littlewood.

The following work is a sequel to three previous communications, and more particularly to the first. The present object is to shew the effect of repeated operation with the matrix differential operator , when it acts upon a scalar matrix formed from an n rowed determinant |xij|, or sums of principal minors, the n2 elements xij being treated as independent variables. Thus when z is a scalar quantity ω z means the matrix [∂z/∂xij], whose ijth element is the derivative.

There are two planes, called “parabolic planes,” through eachline on the cubic surface cutting the surface in residual conics touching the line in question at two points called the “parabolic points” of that line.

It was proved by Salmon (Geom. of three dimensions (1882), p. 331) that the chords of the curve of intersection of two algebraic surfaces of order m and n. which can be drawn from an arbitrary point,meet the curve upon a surface of order (m — 1) (n — 1); it was proved by Valentiner (Acta Math. 2 (1883), p. 191), and by Noether (Berlin. Abh. (1882), Zur Grundlegung u.s.w., p. 27), that the surface of order (m — 1) (n — 1) is a cone, with vertex at the point from which the chords are drawn; and a converse theorem was given by Halphen (J. de l' école Polyt. 52 (1882), p. 106). But the proofs given by Valentiner and Noether have not the elementary character that seems desirable, Noether's proof in particular depending on the theory of the canonical series upon the curve.

George Alexander Gibson was born at Greenlaw, Berwickshire, in 1858. His father was a man of rare capacity and character who wrote a history of Greenlaw and taught himself Latin so as to be able to obtain the material for his history from original documents.

After attending an elementary school at Greenlaw, Gibson enrolled in 1874 as a student at the University of Glasgow, where he gained the highest places in all the classes of the Arts curriculum. At this period of his life his health was not robust and it threatened to terminate his university studies. Consequently, in 1881, he took the degree of M.A. without honours. In the following year he was able to sit the honours examination in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy, and he so distinguished himself that he was awarded the Ewing Fellowship. When the degree of D.Sc. was afterwards insti tuted and the regulation required that a candidate for it should have an honours degree in Arts or Science, his ordinary degree precluded Gibson from becoming a candidate for the doctorate which his published work would doubtless have gained for him.

By the death of Dr Pinkerton on 22nd November 1930, at the comparatively early age of 60, we lost a fellow member who in times past had given varied and valuable service to our Society, and who, as Rector of the High School of Glasgow, occupied a distinguished position among Scottish teachers.

Peter Pinkerton was born in Kilmarnock on 8th June, 1870. He received his early education in the Academy there, and was Medallist in Classics and Mathematics. In 1886 he entered Glasgow University. In 1890 he graduated M.A. with First-class Honours in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy, and was awarded the Breadalbane and John Clark Scholarships in those subjects. For two years thereafter he attended the Royal College of Science, Dublin. He took first places in Mathematics, Mechanics, Physics and Chemistry, and second place in Botany.
